MEDIA RELEASE

A joint release from the Waratah‐Wynyard Council and Cradle Coast Authority

10 March 2011

Work begins on Waratah‐Wynyard Tourism Development Strategy

The Waratah‐Wynyard Council has engaged the Cradle Coast Authority tourism team to review the municipality’s Tourism Development Plan and recommend a five‐year Tourism Development Strategy. The work will be completed in three months and will be based on community and industry consultation; alignment with relevant Tourism Tasmania Zone Marketing initiatives and Council Strategies; research of local, regional and state tourism trends; and a review of previous Council Tourism Development Plans. The refreshed Tourism Development Strategy will cover natural attractions such as the Tarkine and Fossil Bluff, Council infrastructure including the Stamper Mill and Wonders of Wynyard and new and existing events such as the Colours of Wynyard Tulip Festival. Mayor Robbie Walsh said that the project is being completed under the guidance of the Waratah‐Wynyard Tourism Advisory Committee comprised of Councillors, industry representatives, and Council staff. “There is a great foundation to this project given that Tourism Development Plans have been undertaken by Council since 2003,” Mayor Walsh said. “Combine this with the Advisory Committee’s experience and the regional and statewide knowledge of the Cradle Coast tourism team lead by Ian Waller and we have the basis for producing an inspiring and actionable plan for Waratah‐Wynyard’s tourism future.” “We expect the process to consider input from the local tourism industry, representatives from other community, industry and business groups, special interest groups and State Government departments as appropriate,” Mayor Walsh said. Project leader and Regional Tourism Development Manager from the Cradle Coast Authority, Ian Waller, is looking forward to keeping the Advisory Committee informed of progress and reporting back identified objectives and actions. “There have been great achievements in the local tourism industry so we’ll be looking to extend these plus highlight the potential for new tourism ventures and approaches,” Mr Waller said. Work commenced on the Waratah‐Wynyard Tourism Development Strategy this week and is expected to be completed in May before recommendations are shared with the general community.
