MEDIA RELEASE $240k means Cradle Coast NRM can support farmer “climate-readiness” Thursday, May 21, 2009 A new Cradle Coast Natural Resource Management (NRM) project aimed at encouraging farmers towards “climate-readiness” has received $240,000 from the Australian Government. Delivery of the unique three-year Climate Ready Farming Leaders Project will be carried out through a partnership that includes Cradle Coast NRM (a business unit of the Cradle Coast Authority), Serve-Ag and regional consultancy group RMCG. According to Cradle Coast NRM Acting Executive Officer Sue Botting, the project team will work with two pilot groups of young farmers in the Cradle Coast NRM region - Devonport/Sassafras and Forth/Ulverstone, over a three year period. “Apart from developing the technical skills required for ‘climate readiness’, a major goal will be supporting the farmers in their weighing up of economic, social and environmental aspects within their decision-making process,” Ms Botting said. “When they implement new practices on their farms they will receive training on how to monitor, evaluate and continue to add to their knowledge during the three-year project,” Ms Botting said. “The group approach will encourage the exchange of ideas and engender support from within the group for each other during the learning process. “The aim is to build knowledge within the groups so the project delivery partners are better placed to pass those learnings onto wider industry groups in the region”.
