Our Healthy Communities keep active There continues to be fresh bursts of energy in the region’s Healthy Communities Initiative as was well‐demonstrated by the popular Burnie Challenge held on 10 April. Throughout the Healthy Communities pilot, twenty‐four projects were developed and implemented across our nine Councils, all encouraging healthy lifestyles and aiming to reduce the incidence of chronic disease.

A funding submission has been made by the Cradle Coast Authority to the Department of Health and Ageing to implement a second phase of the program. The second phase proposes to focus on: (1) developing a tool kit of policies and best practices for healthy lifestyle programs that can be used as a council resource (2) replicating the Job Services Network participation model developed in Circular Head in other municipalities, and (3) continuing the direct funding of lifestyle programs customised to each local council area. The Australian Government’s response to the funding submission is expected in June.

Tourism’s cooperative marketing online and on display More than 120,000 North West Coast and Western Wilderness visitor guides have been distributed to tourist information service providers as part of an annual update of the handy reference booklets. The guides feature 74 tourism businesses based in North West Tasmania and 46 businesses in the West covering accommodation, tours, sights and eateries. The guides are available from visitor information centres, accommodation providers, taxi and coach lines, car hire companies, interstate consumer travel shows, select interstate travel agencies and onboard the Spirit of Tasmania One and Two. The guides can also be downloaded from new North West Coast and Western Wilderness websites launched this month to capitalise on the increasing number of visitors making holiday plans with the assistance of the internet. The number of downloads of the guides is expected to grow to around 50 000 copies, up from 30 000 in 2010. The Cradle Coast Authority tourism team has been promoting tourism operator participation in the visitor guides and new websites as part of team’s support of the North West Coast and Western Wilderness Zone Marketing Groups. Briefly Help shed some light on Census night The next national Census of Population and Housing will take place on 9 August. The Census can provide us with accurate information on our region’s population, their key characteristics and the dwellings in which they live. The national information is used to determine funding allocations for infrastructure and assets around Australia. The Australian Bureau of Statistics is currently looking for Census Collectors in the Cradle Coast region. Interested applicants can visit www.abs.gov.au/census or call 1800 420 182. The great shave a great success The Cradle Coast Authority’s Regional Tourism Development Manager, Ian Waller, and the Mountaineers Relay for Life team raised $1588.40 at the public shaving of Ian’s much beloved moustache (a regional drawcard in its own right). Thank you to everyone who donated and helped ensure that the ‘mo must go’. New appointments among Cradle Coast Authority Representatives Council Representatives of the Cradle Coast Authority voted at the last meeting to elect Mayor Daryl Quilliam as the new Deputy Chair of the Representatives following the resignation of Kevin Hyland. The group also elected Deputy Mayor Tim Wilson to the Regional Waste Management Committee. Congratulations to both on their appointments. Shorebird awareness continues to grow Cradle Coast NRM was proud to host a Birds Australia presentation on wader migration, conservation and identification held in Burnie on 9 April. The event was well attended by 60 locals, many of whom volunteer in the region’s resident shorebird monitoring program. The third resident shorebird count has recently been completed with data helping to inform placement of interpretive signs and shorebird population health. Rural Living Round‐up—FREE event for hobby farmers and smallholders Cradle Coast NRM is also staging the inaugural hobby farmer and smallholder field day at the Burnie Polytechnic Farm School on 28 May. The event covers a range of topics from animal welfare to weed control and everything in between. There will be guest presenters, practical demonstrations, local produce stalls, kids activities, tours of the farm school and lots of opportunities for hobby farmers and smallholders to chat with experts from around the region and State. For more information on any of the regional Cradle Coast NRM projects, visit www.cradlecoastnrm.com You can also subscribe to the NRM newsletter, Cradle to Coastlines, by calling our office on 6431 6285.
