Gearing up for Healthy Communities - Phase Two Since implementing the Healthy Communities Initiative pilot, the nine Local Councils of the Cradle Coast have launched 24 projects and engaged more than 1500 people in programs to improve physical activity, nutrition and healthy weight.

Programs have ranged from bike riding, using gym equipment in public parks, learning to cook healthier BBQs and grow vegetable gardens, swimming and aqua‐aerobics through to walking groups and extreme physical challenges. A number of new partnerships have been established connecting national health service providers, job service agencies, fitness instructors, dieticians and chefs. Participation in the pilot has also led to a 75% increase in the number of Councils who are coordinators of Heart Foundation Walking programs.

The Department of Health and Ageing recently assessed the performance of the Cradle Coast pilot and has determined that the Cradle Coast Authority is eligible to transition to the Extension Phase of the national program. Congratulations to all participating Councils.

This new phase would extend the program to 30 June 2013 and provide an additional $566,042 to continue the provision of healthy living programs and services for target populations within the Cradle Coast community.

The priority for the extension phase will be programs that help to reduce the risk of lifestyle related disease. As part of the extension phase roll‐out, Councils will be invited to apply for funding of up to $20,000; funding will not be competitive and matching funds will not be required. Work is now underway to finalise the extension phase contract and implementation plans. School Tree Day Kits plant seeds of knowledge Primary schools in the Cradle Coast region have been issued free National Tree Day Kits by Cradle Coast NRM containing native seeds, pots and propagation instructions in the lead up to Tree Day celebrations to be held on 29 July.

The Kits contain native seeds to grow Manuka Tea Tree, biodegradable pots that can be planted straight into the ground, fact sheets and a variety of classroom activities. The activities help classes explore how paper is made and recycled and how seeds germinate and grow.

Local Manuka Tea Tree seeds have been selected for inclusion in the kits for their tolerance of different soil types and growing conditions, moderate size and historical significance in bush tucker, natural medicines and tool making.

Students put a name to their native tree plantings

A total of 100 kits have been sent to Primary Schools. Seeds planted into pots this year will be ready to transfer into school gardens, pot and all, by next year’s Tree Day.

For more information on the School Tree Day Kits, contact Cradle Coast NRM Facilitator, Karina Rose, on 6431 6285.
