The organization provides exhibitions, sales and studio spaces to support the work of local and national artists and offers mission-related educational programs to the community. HCCC is funded in part by grants from The Brown Foundation; Houston Endowment, Inc.; the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance; Texas Commission on the Arts; the National Endowment for the Arts; the Kinder Foundation; the Morgan Foundation; Windgate Charitable Foundation; and the Wortham Foundation, Inc. CURATOR STATEMENT

The CraftTexas series, which is hugely popular with visitors, provides artists the unique opportunity to have their work seen by three established jurors and included in an exhibition that seeks to broaden the understanding of contemporary craft. The show features exceptional work in clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood and mixed media. As the newly appointed curator at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, I believe that this eighth biennial juried exhibition serves as an excellent introduction to an impressive array of media, techniques, and skill inherent in the Texas contemporary craft community. Forty-four artists are represented from a pool of 176 applicants, with works ranging from sculpture, jewelry, textiles, installations, and furniture to concepts that include vernacular architecture, formal elements of design, and man’s relationship to nature. All of these artistic practices come together to create an outstanding showing of what Texas has to offer. We are thrilled to have three outstanding individuals from both the regional and national craft communities serve as our jurors this year: Carol Sauvion, the visionary behind the PBS TV series, Craft in America (Los Angeles, CA), and previous HCCC Texas Masters, Piero Fenci, Ceramics Department Head, Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, TX), and Clint Willour, Curator, Galveston Arts Center (Galveston, TX). —Elizabeth Kozlowski

JUROR STATEMENTS

Determining the quality of a three-dimensional work of art— replete with texture, scale, and physical presence—from pixilated digital images presents many challenges. This caveat notwithstanding, the work runs the full gamut from traditional to experimental, from the pursuit of beauty to the politically charged, and from the utilitarian to the purely formal. The whole, in effect, underlines the current blurring of borders among the traditional art disciplines and confirms that “craft” can no longer remain relegated to a preordained rigid definition of art practice. These diverse works achieve a consistently high standard of excellence. To those whose works are included, my hearty congratulations. To the rest, know that my own work was rejected just last year. Move forward to the next opportunity. —Piero Fenci To be introduced to many talented artists from a vibrant craft region of our country is a rare privilege; jurying CraftTexas 2014 gave me that introduction and that privilege. I noticed some similarities among the artists: a sense of responsibility to the thoughtful use of materials and to the environment, dedication to skilled work, content that includes social conscientiousness, and the pure joy of the creative process. The jurying process was difficult. The choices were diverse and excellent, and all the objects I considered are worthy. I hope these talented artists will continue their creative journey. —Carol Sauvion I am very pleased with the final selections for CraftTexas 2014. It is always interesting to see how selection by committee works—particularly when the committee has no communication with each other while jurying. I think the high caliber of craftsmanship and the originality of ideas and concepts wins out every time. What only a handful of people know is what isn’t in the exhibition. What is in it is a great group of the very best work being made in Texas today. —Clint Willour
