Hi Everyone! Welcome to Lubbock’s very first and only craft magazine! I am so excited about this publication and can't wait to hear what you think about it! I’d like to share with you how the idea of this magazine came about. About 3 years ago I decided to leave my full time job as a graphic artist in order to spend more time with my kids. I've always worked full time but really wished to be a stay-at-home mom. My prayers were answered! With the extra time off that I now had, I began to do crafts here and there. In getting to know the crafting community, I discovered that crafter’s didn’t really have a way or the “know how” to advertise their crafts. So that's when I knew I had to help, and Craft Lubbock was born. Craft Lubbock will give crafter’s and the like, a chance to tell their stories, market their crafts, and grow their businesses in a way that they couldn’t do before.

BE A PART OF THE CRAFT LUBBOCK GOODNESS! Are you interested in being a part of the latest and greatest way to advertise your crafts? Send me an email and let me know! angie@craftlubbock.com www.craftlubbock.com

I look forward to meeting and working with you and helping you reach your crafting goals and dreams! Craft Lubbock is for you crafters!

FEATURED EDITOR: My name is Mandi Rogers and though I love to write, my true passion is to try to create unique decor pieces for others as well as myself to enjoy. That passion, along with the support of my loved ones, inspired me to start my company, M&i Designs. I find inspiration from pop art and pop culture and love to create things that are not only bold and colorful, but quirky and fun.

amily, tradition, and hard work are just a few things that we as Texans take pride in and for one Texan in particular, John Covarrubias. Working full-time, the husband and father of three decided in August 2013, that he could take these values, apply them to his favorite hobby of building things, and make some extra cash in the process. “I’ve always had a creative eye for anything that I did,” said Covarrubias, “I wanted to do something that I enjoy and also make a little money doing so.” He and his wife had run across some ideas on Pinterest where some people had used pallets as building materials for furniture and he instantly found inspiration for products he could create.

F

After gathering the supplies he needed, he took his self-taught carpentry skills and his God-given artistic talent and began building. His first products included items such as tables, wine racks, and benches; all out of pallets. One day while working in his shop, he says the idea finally came to him, “I envisioned a ‘party cart’, something that you could take with you to a tailgate or BBQ and gather around with your friends and family. I wanted something different than what was already out there.” He soon turned the idea into a reality and after his wife began advertising his new party cart cooler on their Facebook page, Cova Designs, they immediately started receiving positive feedback from consumers. That wasn’t the only positive aspect of this experience for him though. Soon after he started building, his two sons, 10 year old Johnathan and 5 year old Aiden, started taking an interest in what their father was doing. Seeing it as an opportunity for some quality father-sons time, Covarrubias began teaching his sons how to build things along with him and the more they learned, the more they enjoyed helping him. Soon, his business became less about a hobby or just making extra money

12

and more about teaching his sons what family, tradition, and hard work were all about. “Family is the most important thing to me,” Covarrubias says, “I don’t let anything take me away from that. The time I’m able to spend with my boys, teaching them a skill away from their video games and tv is priceless.” Along with his sons, he says that the rest of their family started to pitch in as well. With his wife, Angie and their 15 year old daughter, Mia helping him advertise, his parents helping him build his shop from the ground up, and his father-in-law loaning him the tools he needs, Cova Designs has definitely become a family affair. It’s that unconditional support from his family that he says gives him the ability to do what he does, “I do get tired trying to do it all but it helps knowing that I’m providing for my family, that I have a strong support system, and how God has blessed me with this talent; that’s what gets me through the times of exhaustion and frustrations.”

"Balance your time. You have to make yourself set aside time to rest and spend time with your family. Don’t let your hobby take you away from that.”

Among those frustrations, Covarrubias says that his biggest obstacle has been time. Working fulltime doesn’t leave him with a lot of free time for his hobby and it takes a lot of time to build one of his party cart coolers, but no matter what, he says that family time is the most important thing so he makes sure that nothing interferes with that. Throughout this experience, he says that he has taught and also learned a couple things as well, “#1 keep your costs down. A good friend of mine and business mentor taught me that. When you keep your costs down as much as you can, your return in profits is that much more. #2 Balance your time. You have to make yourself set aside time to rest and spend time with your family. Don’t let your hobby take you away from that.” Keeping to his values, John Covarrubias continues to put family first while also doing what he can to turn his favorite hobby into something more. “I want to be able to pass on this skill to my sons,” he says, “and eventually grow this business to where it can fully support my family. I’m a long way from there but pray that one day it’ll get there.”

Shower Cakes A cake designed around an invitation or color scheme can be the final touch your event needs to tie everything together.

Cupcakes In the past, cupcakes were round with a dollop of icing on top. Recently customers have begun looking for more clever, creative designs. Everything is variable now. Cupcakes can be jumbo or miniature, round or square, and just about any color you could think of.

Buttercream Cake A true mark of artistic talent will always be the ability to decorate with buttercream icing. It is a craft that is refined over time.

18

Grooms Cake Engaged couples often use their groom’s cake as an opportunity to let loose, and seek out a design that personifies them. They choose a cake design built around a hobby or fictional character, or a non traditional flavor of cake based on a childhood favorite.

3D Cakes 3D cakes are the epitome of a unique specialty cake. They are built to impress!

Decorating on a budget isn’t always easy. Especially in the summer time with the kids at home, an often desperate need to keep the AC running, and trying to find a way to make up for those few times you might have over-splurged during your recent vacation. However, even on the tightest of budgets, getting that new refreshing look into your home can still be made possible as long as you know where to look. No, I’m not about to send you on a wild scavenger hunt through the Hub City (although, that would be fun!) Instead, I’m going to instruct you to put down your keys, put on those really-comfy-but-society-wouldshun-me-if-I-were-seen clothes, and head over to your recycle bin. Now, I know what you might be thinking, but I’m not talking about macaroni art pieces or tin can pencil holders. I’m talking about new and innovative ways you can use your recyclable materials to decorate your home with pieces that not only cost little or nothing to make, but that your family, friends, and of course Mother Nature will all admire. Here are a few project ideas that you can use to spruce up your home this summer using household items:

FILTER FLOWERS Use coffee filters and a barren branch to make a Cherry Blossom Tree:

1. Dye the filters by dipping the bottoms into a dye solution of one cup water + 20 drops of red food coloring. Let dry overnight. 2. Cut filters in half and then into four-leaf clover shapes. Dot the outer edges with a red marker. Touch the outer edge with wet finger to make the color blend. 3. Cut 1cm slits in the center of each flower and slip onto the tips of a barren branch. 4. Insert tree into a bucket of sand or foam to make it stand. 24

Confetti Bowl Turn left over confetti into an eye catching centerpiece:

1. Blow up a balloon to where the top half is the size you want the bowl to be 2. Apply decoupage glue to the entire top half of the balloon 3. Before glue dries, apply confetti until it covers the area completely Tip: Instead of confetti, you can also use any decorative paper cut into tiny pieces 4. Seal it all in with a thick top coat of decoupage glue and let dry 5. Once completely dried, use a safety pin to pop the balloon

6. Cut along the top edge of the bowl to get the finished look 25

Paper Roll Wall Art Transform cardboard paper rolls into works of art that will amaze:

1. Gently flatten paper rolls and cut into 1 inch rings or whatever thickness you like. 2. Paint pieces and let dry. 3. Place rings in the pattern you want (flowers, wreath, or letters; just let your creativity go wild!) 4. Glue them to each other where they touch and use paper clips to hold them together as they dry. 5. Let dry. 26

Cardboard Storage Bins Decorate cardboard boxes to use as colorful storage bins:

1. Cut out handles on both ends of the box (if handles aren’t already there) 2. Paint or decoupage both inside and outside of the box to your liking 3. Let dry Now that you have some ideas to get you started, forget having to go out into the heat and instead stay in and go crank up that AC without worry. Using your thriftiness, you cannot only make your home look cool, but also allow yourself the budget to keep it feeling cool all summer.

T

o EB, or not to EB, that is the question that 28 year old Emily Brown found herself faced with two years ago when an unexpected opportunity presented itself.

Having a natural talent to do beautiful freehand lettering, Brown had always painted and made things for family and friends as gifts or favors. It was one of those grateful friends that suggested to Brown that she should use her talent to make and sell her own products on Facebook. At the time, the single mother of two had been, for the most part, leading what she considered to be an okay life. A graduate from Texas Tech, Brown had then been teaching for about 3 years, but felt that the path she was on was in need of some sprucing up. “I was in a situation where I wasn’t exactly thrilled about where I was in life,” she says, “Being a single mom isn’t easy and, let’s get real, teaching isn’t either. I didn’t hate teaching, but I just wanted MORE.”

(story continued on next page)

Taking her friend’s advice, Brown set up a Facebook page and began making items to sell that summer under her new business name, EB Designs. With eye-catching colors and her eye candy lettering, the customers’ reactions to her products were positive and booming from the get-go. As soon as she would post an item for sale, there were at least a couple (if not a couple dozen) people that wanted to buy one. It was overwhelming to her, but a huge blessing as well. Over the next two months, her products continued to sell out and the demand for them kept growing. However, the new school year was approaching and that spruced up path had now come to a major fork in the road. Her new business had not only brought her happiness, but she saw in it an opportunity to turn that “okay” into the “MORE” that she wanted for her life.

After weighing her options and a lot of prayer, Brown took a giant leap of faith and decided to quit her teaching job so she could take on EB Designs fulltime. Having zero business knowledge, she was indeed taking a huge risk, but as we all know, the bigger the risk, the greater the reward and fortunately, her risky move has since paid off in spades. Now, being the owner of a successful and growing business, Brown says that it’s not always easy, but the rewards are countless. “I get to work from home,” she says, “I make my own hours. I’m my own boss and I get to be more involved as a Mommy than I used to. It’s absolutely amazing.” The blessings don’t end there for Brown, though. She says that bringing joy to customers is just as rewarding, “I LOVE making things that bring emotions out

in people; things that make you smile, tug on your heart a little, or just say YES! Whether it be a super comfy t-shirt or a poem that your husband wrote and had me script inside your new bible; the way people light up makes my heart smile SO big!”

Her products have reached people both near and far and as a bonus reward, Brown says that once, while on vacation, she spotted an EB Designs t-shirt on someone she had never met and she nearly exploded with excitement. With a wide variety of products, EB Designs has been rapidly growing since its start two years ago. The range to which she can use her talent is endless. Her beautiful lettering can turn anything mundane into a true piece of art. “I just love to write things,” said Brown. “Canvas, chalkboard, and walls are my top three requested items. I also do custom lettering on items that customers bring me. There are so many different adorable things that people

36

come up with!” EB Designs has gotten so popular that Brown recently hired an assistant to help her fill orders. I can imagine that assistance will definitely be needed for Brown as she continues to take her business to new heights. Emily has many hopes and dreams for the future of EB Designs including having a line of products through a bigger company someday or selling to different boutiques to reach more people. With so many possibilities, she is taking it one day at a time. “I pray about this every single day,” Brown says, “for the right people to come into my life who have strengths where I am weak, for the sanity it takes to be a mom and a small business owner, for the energy and ‘umpf’ to make it through each day, and to maintain the joy and love for this adventure in my life, all while I patiently wait for the right doors to open.” When asked what advice she would give to others with dreams of owning their own business, Brown simply said, “Just do it.” After taking her own advice that day two years ago, Emily Brown says she hasn’t looked back even once. “It’s been a process and has taken several years to kind of figure this all out, but I’ve learned as I go and I think I’m finally getting there. Sometimes it gets tough, but that just makes me work harder. I never want to quit this!”

J&J Boutique: The Path Tutu Success

t’s amazing when we look back on our lives at the moments that led us to where we are today. The things that seemed so insignificant at the time often turned out to be the giant stepping stones that altered our paths. For 24-year-old, Sara Ojeda, one such moment came 4 years ago and she had no idea of the impact it would have on her future.

I

As a single mom both working and in college, Ojeda was doing everything she could to make ends meet but decided she wanted to do more. After a little supportive nudge from her father, she started making tutus and posted them on Facebook to sell. It was a smart move because everyone loves tutus, I mean who wouldn’t? They’re fun, cute, and you can’t help but feel beautiful when wearing one… oh and they’re great for kids too. Needless to say, people were buying what she was selling. She soon started making other products to sell as well, such as bows, headbands, and sun-hats. With so much positive feedback from customers and being able to sell almost everything she made, it was apparent to Ojeda

41

that she was really starting to make a name for herself in the Lubbock area, so she figured it was time to give her business a name of its own. Inspired by her two children, Jaden and Jaelyn, she decided to name her company J&J Boutique. Ojeda took J&J Boutique to every craft show she could and as her experience grew so did her success and aspirations. From there, she started making children’s clothes and the new J&J Boutique was born. “I dream of the day when I have my own little shop. Eventually, I would love to work with wedding gowns, prom dresses, and quinceanera dresses.” It will be a happy day indeed when we adults get to share in the fun, comfy, and simple goodness ~ that is J&J Boutique.

Until then, Ojeda is working on new children’s products to sell and continues to promote her company by handing out business cards wherever she can and hosting give away contests on the J&J Boutique Facebook page. With as much as this company has grown in just 4 years, it will be exciting to see it blossom even more in the years to come. However, even though her success has been great, Ojeda says that’s not what she loves most about her company, “[I love] the feeling of accomplishment. I love that it’s a never ending story of learning. There’s always something new to sew.” From that first moment, when she decided to give selling tutus a try, Sara Ojeda’s life has definitely taken an unexpected turn for the better and she continues to do her best to follow the n e v e r- h av e - t o - s aywhat-if rule by taking risks and seizing opportunities as they come. And to those who are navigating their own stepping stones to achievement, she has some good advice, “Never give up. Some days you will feel like you haven’t made any progress with all your efforts, but you have to be your own #1 fan.”
