Craft Scotland’s showcase at Collect 2019 is characterised by an unfaltering sense of experimentation, at times bravely irreverent and others joyfully playful. This year’s selection celebrates makers pushing their disciplines to the very limits; those who are carving out new territories where different disciplines collide and makers whose techniques create new materialities which deliberately defy definition. With my background in archaeology and through my curatorial practice, I have a forensic fascination with materials. I am endlessly intrigued by the creative choices that makers make and the reactions these choices instill in us as the viewer, wearer or collector. For me, craft has the power to question the very value of materials through the makers’ unique ways of relating with and seeing the world around us. The idea that materials behave in a certain way and that makers should be ‘true’ to this concept as asserted by Henry Moore in 1934, is challenged in this year’s Craft Scotland showcase. Instead materials behave unexpectedly and new possibilities emerge. You can read my full article where I explore this in-depth looking at several talented makers in this year’s presentation. Angus Ross is concerned with structure, function and sustainability – creating museum-quality contemporary furniture. Angus sources his sustainable oak from the woodland that he co-owns. Characterised by pure flowing lines, Angus’ pieces combine the ancient art of steambending with contemporary technologies. Angus is a licensee of the Scottish Working Woods label, and his clients include international private collectors, UK museums and public bodies. Anna Gordon  Gullane
Anna Gordon is interested in drawing, viewing her pieces as a sketch on the body, often with an element of movement. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art, continuing with a postgraduate in 1994. Receiving early acclaim for her intricate jewellery in gold and silver, Anna has exhibited throughout the UK, Europe and USA. Cristina Zani  Edinburgh
Italian-born artist Cristina Zani is inspired by Italo Calvino’s novel Invisible Cities and the architecture of Seoul, where she studied during her MFA in Jewellery. While searching for a personal way to elaborate her vision of the urban landscape, she develops forms that are based on subjective observation, but invite the viewer to make new personal associations. Hamish Dobbie  Glasgow
Inspired by the landscape of Scotland, Hamish Dobbie creates functional and decorative objects using sterling silver and select hardwoods. He uses a combination of ancient and modern techniques: including hammering, chasing, engraving and 3D printing. In 2013, he graduated in Silversmithing and Jewellery from the Glasgow School of Art. Harry Morgan Edinburgh
Harry Morgan’s work highlights the contrasting qualities of glass and concrete, forcing the two into one physically improbable piece. Each glass thread is pulled by hand from a furnace and combined with cast concrete. Graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2014, Harry has a piece in the V&A collection and exhibits regularly. James Rigler Glasgow
James Rigler studied 3D Craft at the University of Brighton before graduating from the Royal College of Art with a master’s degree in Ceramics and Glass in 2007. His bold ceramic sculptures are inspired by the language of architectural ornament. James’ work is often siteresponsive, and previous work includes a commission by Chatsworth House in 2014 and a piece in the V&A collection. Lara Scobie Edinburgh
Large-scale statement ceramics by Lara Scobie balance composition and form. Lara plays with space and pattern by integrating colour, markmaking and volume. Lara has exhibited internationally including at SOFA Chicago and Ceramic Art London and received multiple awards, including Honourable Mention at the International Ceramics Competition Mino, Japan. Lizzie Farey  Castle Douglas
For Lizzie Farey, the rural setting of her studio is her guiding inspiration. She grows much of her own materials, planting, tending and harvesting a range of willow. Influences from Japan continue to inspire her to capture the simplicity, practicality and beauty of nature. Lynne MacLachlan Glasgow
Lynne MacLachlan’s designs play with light, space and colour. After an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering, Lynne completed a master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Jewellery and Metalwork in 2010. Meticulous handfinishing techniques are paired with an experimental approach to digital tools, bespoke software and 3D printing to create complex forms. Misun Won Edinburgh
Misun Won takes inspiration from Jogakbo, a traditional Korean patchworked wrapping cloth, and its relationship to fractal geometry. Highlighting the complexity of her structures, Misun applies Keumboo, an ancient Korean gilding technique. Misun undertook her undergraduate in Precious Metal Design at the Hanyang University, South Korea and went on to complete a master’s degree at Edinburgh College of Art. Patricia Shone Skye
Patricia Shone aims to convey the forces of nature that shape her home, the island of Skye. She uses unpredictable firing techniques including; raku, wood and saggar firing. Each unique piece is made by hand forming - texturing, stretching and carving. Patricia graduated in 3D Design from London’s Central School of Art in 1985. Rhona McCallum Glasgow
Rhona McCallum creates sculptural statement jewellery inspired by changing landscapes. Hammered lines run through each piece, accentuated by flashes of gold that reference geological fractures and layers in stone. Ruth Leslie Edinburgh
Ruth Leslie creates playful, sculptural jewellery in silver, gold and titanium. Ruth’s pieces are inspired by the subtle details within fabrics and the structural forms of textile machinery. Each fine wire is wrapped around frames by hand to create tactile, refined forms. Shaun Fraser Inverness
Growing up in the Highlands, the raw and emotive landscape has always featured heavily in Shaun Fraser’s practice. His sculptural work explores these themes by incorporating natural materials including crushed peat and local soils. He specialised in glass during his undergraduate at Edinburgh College of Art, and later went on to complete a master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in 2017. Vicky Higginson’s work combines hot glass and cold-working. Forms are handblown and worked into using cutting, carving and engraving techniques to create sculptural objects. She explores the relationships between form, pattern and colour. Vicky studied 3D Design at Manchester Metropolitan University, completing a master’s degree in Glass at the University of Sunderland in 2011.
