In:Site 2017

A Festival of graduate Creativity In:Site festival of graduate creativity returns to Birmingham’s Cathedral Square in September 2017 for its seventh year. It is curated and produced by Craftspace, a Birmingham based charity developing and promoting contemporary craft and applied arts. Beginning as a one day event In:Site has grown into a five day festival, in partnership with Birmingham Cathedral and other organisations around Colmore Business District. The Cathedral Square is a major city thoroughfare and meeting point with as many as twenty thousand people passing through and spending time in the public space each day. Over five days selected graduates make bespoke artworks in situ responding to the space, architecture, people and heritage. Some are created with the participation and engagement of the passing public. The festival aims to showcase new graduate talent and develop emerging craft businesses. It provides graduates with a paid early career commission and profile for their CV. Benefits include being able to: enhance skills, test the viability of ideas, respond to a public art brief and a specific site and engage with the public at first hand. It also presents contemporary craft for all to encounter and experience in an unconventional public setting. This year’s artists have been selected by Jane McArdle, Heritage Manager for Birmingham Cathedral and Craftspace, following research visits to degree shows in the West Midlands, London and New Designers UK graduates show. We are delighted to introduce a new partnership with Jaguar Land Rover’s clay modellers in support of a one-year-on residency for Sarah Christie, an artist working in clay. Displays of artworks by participating artists are also on show in Natwest St Philip’s Place Branch reception and inside the Cathedral.

Sarah Christie, an artist who works in clay, participated in In:Site 2016 and returns for a one week residency by invitation. This time she collaborates with clay modellers from Jaguar Land Rover. They demonstrate the versatility and importance of clay as a material which is used expressively by artists and also as a sculpting material for design in the car industry. Passersby can try their hand at sculpting using the modelling clay supplied by Jaguar Land Rover.
