MADE IN THE MIDDLE 06
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK This is your book to use in this gallery and then to take home. You can use this book to help you explore this exhibition. You can also use this book to write or draw your thoughts and ideas.
WORKSHOP Makers work in various places, some work in their house, some work in an old church and some in their garden - look around the exhibition and write down WHO WORKS HERE?
TOOLS Each maker uses different tools depending on the material they use to make their objects. Dennis Farrell uses tools to work with ceramics but on this picture of his workshop some have disappeared - Look around the exhibition to find the missing tools and draw them here.
MATERIALS The makers use many different materials to create their work. Find and draw the objects in the exhibition that are made from threads like the ones pictured here?
MATERIALS Some makers use found objects in their work. Someone in the exhibition has used an object like this. It’s called a Bulldog clip and is normally used to keep paper sheets together. Can you find one of these in the exhibition? When you find it, draw the whole object here.
Write down who it is and draw their object on this page
INSPIRATION Makers find inspiration for their work in many ways - some draw, some collect objects, some take photographs of things they like. Can you guess which ceramicist has taken these photographs? Draw their work here.
MAKING Glass is heated in a furnace so that its shape can be changed easily. Find Clare Henshaw’s vase from this photograph in the exhibition and see how different it looks once it is finished.
Now it is your turn to make something... turn the page and follow John Grayson’s instructions to make the object pictured on the back cover.
