Concept_Spreading_River Stragegic_Framework Manchester was given life from the River Irwell, it was once a water source for farming it then powered the mills which revolutionised the city. The river was once celebrated but now it has lost its use; the mills closed, the river was moved to a more convienant, organised location. The river has been forgotten, the history of how the river powered Manchester has faded. My stratagy is to bring back this history to the streets of Manchester and to celebrate what the river has done for it. Throughout the city there are buildings and places that have strong links to the river but overtime have been lost, I want to reunite these links. The way to do this is to create green corridors from the building or place back to the river therefore connecting these two places once again. These links will give people ease of access to the city and to its less convienant places, along the way rediscovering the industrial connection Manchester has to the river.

Concept_Explanation To link places and buildings back to river I want to use very organic shapes as if it was the river deciding how to design the layout. I want the green corridor to flow away from the river as the river would flow. By using these organic shapes it will create a much more fluid design. By using liquid and gravity to draw the lines you take away the control from the pen and therefore creating much more natural looking design. This is key for this stratagy since the lines represent the flow of the river.

Changing of the River Irwell Location

1950- This map was created in 1950 and you can clearly see the location of the river. When the river was in this position it was used by Industrial water mills to power the machinary. When the river was in this location the buildings surrounding the river had a purpose and the streets seemed very organised.

1975- This map was created in 1975 and this shows the development of the moving of the River Irwell. You can see the two locations of the river, the river was moved to open up more space and to speed up the flow of the water therefore lowering the risk of flooding. This left the mills which relied on the river for power supply useless and over time these buildings became derelict and this made the whole area deteriorate and became unorganised.

1990- This map was created in 1990 and it shows the river now

in its new location and the new building layout. Many of the Mills which relied on the river have be demolished and replaced by newer buildings. The mills that are left have become warehouses and have fallen into very poor shape. The road network has not changed much from the original design as shown in the map 1950 so the roads still follow the rivers position before it was moved.

Views Around Site

Old Mill building with modern extention at the end. This mill was powered by the River Irwell until the river was moved and left it without a purpose.

Old mill close up, filled with small independant shops. This mill was also powered by the river and once it was moved its purpose had been lost.

View into main site, old mill in the background and modern workshops in the fore ground. At the end of the site is the River Irwell, the river once flew through the middle of this site.

Back of the mill by the river, occupied by car repairs workshop. This part of the site gets the sun throughout the day.

View into site along the old mill building. At the end of the building is the river Irwell.

Development of Idea

The image to the right is of a braided river and this was a huge influence in the change of my design. I decided to try and recreate the feeling and essence of a river on my site rather than the exact coordinates were the river once flew.

These were my first attempts of trying to recreate the feel and the essence of a river on my site. These designs are based on a meandering rivers. I felt these designs are strong but I felt it was still not enough.

This image to the right is the type of path network I would like to create on my site. But with my design I want each path to have a purpose and yet not loose the loosness that this path has in the picture.

This is my idea developing further, the braided river gives the option to create greater improve the network of paths between the two sides. Inside a river the sediment oftens sets in the middle and I want to recreate this by creating grass mounds in middle of my paths.

The site is going to bow in the middle to create almost a bowl in the middle of the site. The links across the site are too direct and they take away from the fluidity that the river gives. I need to create links that flow with the river whilst giving people the chance to go were they would like on the site.

This is a meandering g r a s s enbankment and I like the curves and the changes in levels.

This is photograph of a meadering river, I want to create this fluidity in my design and the mounds in the middle of river.

A Regeneration of a post industrial site which celebrates the industrial past of Manchester and its links to the River Irwell.

BMM

Multi-Stem Platanus × acerifolia

This site only uses heavy solid materials which give reference to its Industrial heritage. The site combines solid granite, light and dark in colour to create a strong contrast and thick white concrete to hold the artificial river. Strong form planting acts as a buffer between the natural looking grass mounds and the strong lines of the buildings. The artificial river flows again along its historical path bringing back what it was that created the industrial area in the beginning; and giving the place meaning once again.
