DIRECTOR’S WELCOME Hello There!

Director’s Choice

Welcome to our new autumn and winter season, packed full of great theatre and arts events right at the heart of the city.

This season we’ve a very special experience coming to Lincoln that I’m particularly thrilled about, which I think perfectly captures the excitement of contemporary British theatre and the spirit of the type of work we try to present at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre – Paines Plough’s pop-up theatre space Roundabout. This award-winning theatre-in-the-round feels a little like a space ship inside and will land in front of our building this September, within a specially constructed geo-dome. Over the course of a week it will play host to a packed schedule of performance from great new theatre, family shows, music, comedy and cabaret alongside script readings and scratch performances. There’s never been anything like it in the city and we’re thrilled Lincoln is one of the few places in the UK to host this unique experience.

We round off the season (no pun intended) with another in-theround extravaganza – our annual Christmas show. This year we’re setting sail for Neverland in a fun-filled retelling of Peter Pan, filled with swashbuckling pirates, free-running Lost Boys, a feisty fairy and a steampunk crocodile. So whether you’re a Lost Boy, a Lost Girl, or simply a parent that never grew up, this year is set to be an ideal festive treat for all the family. See you soon

WAITING FOR GODOT By Samuel Beckett

Wednesday 21 & Thursday 22 October 7.30pm A country road. A tree. Evening. Vladimir and Estragon meet as dusk approaches. Estragon tries to remove his boot. Vladimir examines his hat. A conversation begins, a joke is interrupted. A carrot is eaten. The two men quarrel, then embrace. So begins Samuel Beckett’s 60-year-old masterpiece Waiting for Godot, a ground-breaking, anarchic meditation on the meaning of life and death. Part allegory, part burlesque, Beckett’s unique, timeless play moves seamlessly between absurdist comic sketch and captivating philosophical drama. First produced in 1955, Waiting for Godot is arguably the most significant English language play of the 20th Century.

CARTOGRAPHY Thursday 5 November 7.30pm A tattered map. Outdated, well-loved and a nightmare to fold. Sarah is busy dying, counting down her heartbeats. She is studying maps of places she never intends to go. John is driven to travel by the need to be someone interesting. He is drawing lines across continents, counting the borders he’ll cross and the cities he’ll see. Both are looking for a future when they meet each other.

Saturday 7 November 7.30pm The Olivier Award-winning version of Puccini’s much-loved weepie is a favourite with critics and audiences alike. One of the most accessible and moving operas ever written, La Bohème charts the ups and downs of a group of idealistic graduates as they bicker, party, try to make ends meet and follow their dreams. Aspiring novelist Rodolfo discovers a harsher reality when he falls for immigrant cleaner Mimi, while his best friend Marcello’s tempestuous relationship with his on-off girlfriend Musetta brings humour and fireworks to the stage. The comic elements of this hugely popular production heighten its tragic ending, with audiences saying this 21st century Bohème affected them like no other. “Madly Brilliant.” “A Masterstroke.”

womenswear Thurs 12 & Fri 13 November 8pm We cook. We clean. We cry. We buy shoes. We wear bras. Sometimes we burn them. We bitch. We moan. We seduce. We give birth. We menstruate. We wash clothes. We pick arguments. We know what we want. We are attention seekers. We are the emotional sex. We are from Venus.

Framed by two violent deaths – the apparently inexplicable suicide of a young gay man, and the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich in May 2013 – Men in the Cities is a compelling piece about harm and complicity, and about the forces that shape our relationships.

Drawn from fact and fiction, history and fantasy, Womenswear explores the point where expectation and reality meet. Follow us on a journey to discover the truth behind the stereotype and the real life that women wear.

Through fractured snapshots of seemingly disconnected lives, Men in the Cities presents a challenging but radically humane portrait of how we live now.
