We speak to Andrew Cotton about his fantastic year at the forefront of the big wave scene, Nazaré, Billabong XXL and more..

12 Pushing the Boundries

Red Bull Media House are doing exactly that in the wake sports scene, so here you’ll see the best and most elaborate locations you can think of. Anything and everything wake.

19 The Wave Garden

For years we have all been waiting for the next best thing in artifical wave tech. Kelly Slater looked like he’d be the man to take it to the next level but complications arose. However, I wouldn’t count on The Wave Garden having the same issue when you see what they have already achieved here.

23 Ben Player Exclusive

The IBA World Tour had somewhat of a strange year but tour veteran Ben Player made it his as he took his third world title. We catch up with the Aussie champ to see how he felt about it all and the prospects of next years tour.

27 Suit up for Summer

It’s time for winter to bugger off once more as we see the arrival of spring. Everyone will be glad that this means thinner suits for the coming months and you can ditch those nasty hoods. This is the best time of year to boost your wetsuit quiver, so here are our best picks for the season to come.

WELCOME BACK... THE SUMMER SURFERS Are of one of those guys who shies away from the frigid conditions that winter brings us here in the UK? Afraid to pull on your hood and dive in? Or maybe you don’t even have a hood, gloves and boots and all these things we need just for a quick winter session. Don’t worry, I’m not one to scrutinise. There is just something about being uncomfortable in your 5:4 suit, with dry suit zip and only your face battling the wind that doesn’t appeal to everyone and I definitely get that. Of course, you could just not wear that stuff and stick to the spring suit. As much as you love surfing though, when you take that first wave on the head and you come up like you’ve just eaten a tray of ice, is it really worth it? That pain in your head really does take away some of the enjoyment. Thankfully, that season is just about behind us here in the UK. We know we can never be promised sun everyday for the summer and there is very rarely an opportunity to ditch the wetsuit all together, but just downsizing to that light summer suit makes all the difference. You no longer have to sit on your board, head down and hands under your armpits just to try and conserve every little bit of feeling you have left in you. Anyway, the summer is coming and that means the return of plenty of you hibernating wave riders. Sure the breaks get busier. Devon and Cornwall bring the tourists too, but usually, that’s a reasonable price to pay for the extra comfort and warmth which ultimately means... longer sessions! across the board magazine

ANDREW COTTON

O

nce again our favourite plumber from Devon, Andrew Cotton, has been in the news globally after riding what could be the biggest wave ever at Nazaré, Portugal. At 34 years of age it seems a little late for him to be bursting onto the scene but this is huge credit to the man. With a lack of funding until recently when Red Bull have provided him with some equiptment, it is outstanding what he has achieved and it is a real testament to hard work and determination. So, to start us off, how long have you been surfing and where did you start?

What was your first real big wave experience?

I started surfing around 8 (34yrs now!) at my local beach Saunton, North Devon, I hired a board the first few times until my dad bought me one for my birthday.

I suppose it depends on what you call a big wave. I can remember surfing some solid 8ft waves in the canaries when I was 16 and loving it. I went to hawaii for the first time when I was 20 and surfed pretty big Waimea. It must of been about 20-25 foot and that was a real eye opener.

When learning were you always thinking about riding bigger and bigger waves or was this just natural progression? Big wave surfing is always a natural progression, it doesn’t happen over night. Personally I feel I’m a surfer, I love surfing whether it’s 2 foot or 20 foot, I’m stoked to be in the sea.

The mental state is definitely key. Focus, calm and believe is what I tell myself.

Cotton on a Tow-in session at Aileens, Ireland across the board magazine

9

When your in such massive conditions do you feel that you have to get into a right mental state or is it just a case of instinct taking over? A bit of both really. As a surfer your natural instinct takes over as soon as your on a wave, whether it’s for better or worse. But the mental state is definitely key. Focus, calm and believe is what I tell myself. What is your favourite big wave break that you have surfed? And is there anywhere you would like to go but haven’t yet? Ah, there are loads of places I’d like to go! The list is endless but I think one of my favourite places to surf big waves is Madeira. It is such a cool island with empty waves that get giant. Love it. Finally, what’s it like to be nominated again this year for the Billabong XXL awards? It’s amazing, in fact I can’t believe it really. It’s a big deal to me getting a bit if global recognition from my surfing peers. I was lucky to get some a couple years ago for a wave at mully but for it to happen again I’m super stoked.

PUSHING THE

BOUNDRIES

A

nyone with the slightest interest in extreme sports will know that Red Bull seem to be at the forefront of the scene, consistently coming up with innovative ideas to push sports further. Wake sports are no exception with Red Bull really pushing it to the limit. Wakeboarding before was just towing on the flattest lake you could find or travelling to a cable park and that’s as far as film went in terms of wake sports. The Red Bull Media House have taken wake sports all over the world now and here are just some examples of the things they have shown are possible.

12 across the board magazine

Brian Grubb, a world champion wakeskater you see in these photos, had a vision when he saw pictures of the rice terraces on the back of a 1000 Peso bill whilst in the Philippines. There is just something special about taking a sport into such a natural environment and pushing the boundries and thankfully he was the first to notice this. With the backing of Red Bull, with whom Grubb has made plenty of films, his dream was made a reality. On arrival Grubb and the team had to get the permission of the local tribe during a ceremony who were happy for them ride the terraces. It has been done with the utmost respect for the environment even using old logs to create sliders (rails) from one rice pool to the next. This discovery has led to some truly incredible wakeskating and the team plan to take this even further. The idea now is to organise a whole event up in the rice terrices and they believe that the friendly tribes of the philippines will have no issues with this. So, fingers crossed and and this won’t be the last time we see someone carving in a mountain pool.

Since Brian Grubbs’ amazing trip, it has not taken a lot for his fellow Reb Bull team mates to jump on board and continue to take anything and everthing wake, anywhere in the world. Once again, the focus was on riding something natural, so Red Bull team wakeboarders, Adam Errington and Parks Bonifay travelled to Argentina. Looking at the photo to the left you might be thinking it looks more like Antartica or something. This is actually a glacial lake in Patagonia, Argentina. Known by the locals as ‘Los Glacieres Parque Nacional’ because of how it freezes over in the winter months leaving the ice bergs to float all over. The guys were joined by Cutun Martin and Tomas Karagozian who all ditched their usual boardies and crash jackets for dry suits and helmets. The guys scored some amazing conditions and got to hit some of the best natural features in the world. Apart from the freezing cold its hard to think of anything better than skimming under a natural ice arch or pulling an icey wall ride. Overall the trip looked a success so be sure to check out the video and see how far these guys can really push the sport.

Lake Kaindy. 300km into the mountains of Kazakhstan this has to be one of Red Bull’s most far out ventures. Russian wakeboarder, Nikita Martyanov, is to thank for this fantastic spectacle. With memories of the lake when he was a young child and before any knowledge of wakeboarding, Nikita recently had the vision to revisit and ride there. The trees you see have been uniquely preserved when the lake filled this valley due to the cold conditions, creating a really eerie looking prospect. However, due to it’s uniqueness this lake was deemed a natural park so the crew had to get special permission to ride there and film it. After the tough journey there, Nikita enlisted the help of some locals living in the mountains and what they worked together to create was really special. Wood from the surrounding forest was used to make rails and a wall ride, which Nikita and the locals tied to the already standing trees in order to be as eco friendly as possible. The final part was airlifting in a jet ski as it’s the only thing that could cover the shallow waters and the rest is history.

Lebanon

Dutch Wakeboarder Duncan Zuur has recently shown off his skills in one the most unique locations on earth. Jeita Grotto, Lebanon, is a system of limestone caves spanning over nine kilometres and contains chambers that go up to 120 metres high. A truly remarkable location that Duncan Zuur managed to get special permission to ride inside.

The main priority whilst doing this project was to preserve the grotto’s ecosystem so the Red Bull team had to work along side the grotto’s admin and tech team. Even a special lighting technique had to be used to ensure the cave was properly protected.

Duncan was able to ride in one of the larger chambers in the cave on his first visit to Lebanon and was the centre of an amazing production. Two boats were set up in the centre where he pulled tricks under some incredible lighting. It is not even the tricks which make this production so special though. Just watching him carve through this gigantic gallery was all this film needed as the location is so special. Out of all these amazing locations that the Red Bull team have visited I find it impossible to choose between them, so I’ll let you argue amongst yourselves when you go and check out these videos on the Red Bull website.

Nazaré the break to beat..? Is

Garret Mcnamara on a bomb at Nazaré as the crowd go wild...

The entry window for the Billabong XXL global big wave competition will close on March the 19th.

Often this competition is dominated with outstanding entries from the likes of Teahupoo and Jaws. However, this year, all the recent talk has been aimed at one of the most recently discovered big wave breaks, Nazaré, Portugal. The two men making all the headlines are Garrett Mcnamara of the US and Devon’s very own, Andrew Cotton. You have probably already seen Cotton’s unbelievable entry all over the news (and already in this magazine). Anyway, these two are well and truly in the mix for ride of the year. The rules state that: ‘The Billabong XXL Ride of the Year Award will be won by the individual surfer who - based on review of available video images by a panel of experts - demonstrates the most advanced and committed level of big wave surfing performance during a single successful ride during the annual event period.’ As far as the speak on the web goes, it seems that these rides at Nazaré are the ones to beat for Ride of the Year and a lot of people have already made up their minds that Cotty’s mountain is the biggest wave ever ridden. There is however, some contraversy over Nazaré due to the nature of how it breaks or how some would say it does not really break. But when your riding an 80 foot face, I personally don’t see that theres much of an argument there. Anyway, it is ‘open to interpretation as to what constitutes a successful ride’ so we can do nothing but wait and see...

‘WAVEGARDEN WORKS IN THE EXACT SAME

WAY AN OCEAN WAVE DOES. A MASS

I

t seems that artificial waves have been around for a quite a long time now right? Everyones seen the videos of various pro’s hitting up waterparks in the US and getting an okay ride out of their wave pools. Or maybe the pro’s going to proper surfing wave pools in Japan. As is obvious, my point is ‘pro’s’. Us regular Joes however, don’t seem to get the chance anywhere, to ride an artificial wave when the sea is being difficult. The idea has always been there, but now a fantastic company called ‘Wavegarden’, seem to be heading in the direction of making artificial wave riding, a very real possibility for the public. No, I’m not messing with you. Wavegarden have built a full sized demo centre in Northern Spain. The perfect wave in a Basque Mountain Valley. The idea of this demo facility is that it will be a spot with areas to lounge about with shops and cafe’s to make it a sort of, day out experience. But clearly that’s not what your all most interested in as the wave itself is quite special.

18 across the board magazine

OF WATER IS SYSTEMATICALLY MOVED OVER A SURFACE THAT CAUSES THE WAVE TO FORM AND THEN FOLD ON ITSELF – JUST

LIKE A WAVE BREAKING OVER A REEF OR SAND BAR. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT WAVEGARDEN CAN REGULATE THE

SIZE AND SPEED OF THE WAVE AT WILL.’

Wavegarden, Northern Spain

The Numbers

Wavegarden claims that this surfing lagoon can generate perfectly formed tubing waves that will run for 220 metres or more, with no loss in power or shape. This actually makes it the longest artificial surfing wave on the planet! Every minute, either side of the boardwalk, identical waves will break simultaneously left and right giving you a barrelling point-break type ride for as long as 20 seconds. These types of waves put together with these figures isn’t far from surfers paradise, I think we can all agree. All this means 120 perfect barreling waves rolling in every hour!

Gabriel Medina "It’s fun for everyone. If you don’t surf, you can learn to surf right here!”

Wavegarden appear to have created something very special here. The idea of their facilities is to accomodate all types of waveriders. The plans show that it can be open to surfers, bodyboarders and kayakers alike. One of the most important features however, is that they plan to open this to all abilities so first timers and children can surf the broken white water, closer into the bay area, after the waves have broken off the end of the board walk.

The Wave: ‘The Wave,

Bristol will be located just to the north of Bristol City in

South Gloucestershire. It combines the beautiful views of the Severn Bridges and Wales combined with the easy access to Bristol and surrounding areas. The centrepiece of the Bristol site will be the surfing lake.

It will allow professional surfers and beginners to be in the water together and having equal amounts of fun riding perfect

barrelling waves.’

20 across the board magazine

Now, you may be thinking this is all awesome but I’m never going to go and surf a demo centre in some Spanish Valleys...However, check out the statement from The Wave to the left. The Wave are a company planning on using the Wavegarden technology to create a fully functioning surf centre. The idea is that they will make it just like the demo centre in Spain but with a few extras. The vision from the team behind the name is to create a venue that will allow people to enjoy the outdoors, excercise, relax and socialise. With this in mind it will not only be a surf facility. The plans are showing that there will be another natural swimming lake, mulitifuctional gardens and woodland trails so they really are trying to appeal to people of all ages. Clearly though, the centrepeice is the surfing lake! The fact that this is coming to the UK has me stoked! This will be the first of its kind in wave technology in the country and the creators are promising even more staggering stats in terms of wave size and duration, than that of its Spanish prototype. The Wave are saying that we could be enjoying these perfect barrelling waves by the end of 2014 now the plans are in place. So keep an eye out for developments, as I am personally hoping for a very quick year!

BEN PLAYER

2013 World Champion

N

ow aged 35 a lot of people will consider Ben Player a veteran on the IBA world tour. Starting from the bottom and working his way through the ranks, Ben has been competing professionally for over 15 years and has become a legend amongst the bodyboarding world. At this age people may think he is coming to end of his days as a pro, but the Australian is just as competitive and driven as ever. In the world of bodyboarding there aren’t many names as big as Ben Player who has really thrown himself into every aspect of the sport. He works and rides for NMD, one of the biggest names in the game and even had a stint running his own bodyboard magazine, ‘Movement’.

22 across the board magazine

In 2013 Ben was crowned bodyboarder of the year by his peers and also won the IBA world Tour for the third time in his career. However, there was contraversy surrounding last years tour when the last event of the calender was cancelled, leaving Ben and fellow rider, Amaury Lavernhe on the same number of points. It went down to a judges decision and Ben came out on top. His third title winning year was slightly strange and things on the tour aren’t looking great either as it may not even be running this year, which would be a great shame for us all. Now, we hope this is all just rumour but with this and after Ben’s third title, we thought this was an ideal time to catch up with him and see what is going on...

CM: To start us off how long have you been bodyboarding? And did you have a home break or a favourite break when growing up? BP: I started bodyboarding when I was 10, that is 25 years ago and I have loved it ever since. I started at my local beach called Avalon which is about an hour north of Sydney. I still live here and still love surfing the waves around here. CM: Is there any wave in the world you haven’t surfed yet but would like to? BP: I would love to surf so many waves around the world. The one place I want to go more than anywhere would be Skeleton Bay in Africa. CM: What was it like winning the World championship under such strange circumstances this year? BP: It was weird. I definitely didn’t enjoy

24 across the board magazine

the same elation and sense of victory that I felt in 2005 and 2007, but I guess a win is a win despite the circumstances in which I won. I never wanted the win to go down that way. CM: Which is your most memorable world title? BP: Probably the first one in 2005 because I came from so far behind, at the pipe competition (which used to finish the tour) I had to knock Mitch Rawlins out in the quarter finals and and go onto to get second or above in the final.I was dumbfounded when I won, it felt so unreal.

To me, Pipe was the place that I always wanted to win, so competing there will be special for me.

CM: What is your favourite event on the IBA World tour and why? I always love competing at Pipe because I hold that wave with such high regard. To me Pipe was the place that I always wanted to win so competing there will be special for me. CM: What is your involvement with Movement bodyboard magazine? And what’s it like working on it? BP: I started Movement in 2003 and ceased publishing it in late in 2012 due to lack in advertising expenditure from brands as a result of the GFC. I learned heaps from it though and it was a great education in business and management for me. CM: Congratulations on retaining your title at Pipeline this year. What’s it like to win such a huge event two years in a row? BP: It feels amazing, and to win the event

I have always wanted to win since I was kid feels amazing. CM: News coming from the IBA is that the tour may not be running this year which would be a great shame. Do you know what the issue is there? BP: The issue is that the IBA has been running at a loss the past few years as a result of no major umbrella sponsors coming on board, so the owners are assessing if there is other income options to make the tour sustainable. Is there anything that can be done to push for it to run because we know a lot of people will be disappointed if it doesn’t? Well, they’re a smart bunch of guys so I think they will come up with a solution and the tour will run as it has been as of next year, it’s just a matter of waiting it out until that point though. across the board magazine

A brand new portable speaker on the market which is being made my a one man company, Pasce. This British company, after three years of development have released one of the most astounding audio devices we have ever seen. The best thing about the Minirig however, is the sound quality. It actually has two different auxillary ports which seems strange at first but is actually a genius move. The bottom is low gain and the top high gain. So it can be used for casual listening or if you really want to crank it up the high gain port will continue to suprise you. Using it’s built in amp, the volume can go extremely high without distorting and the bass is unreal for a speaker of this size. minirig.co.uk
