Hello Riders, The competitive cycling scene in India has seen some recent milestones with the MTB nationals’ competitive track being thrown open to amateurs. In the much mature sport of track cycling, Indian athletes have been causing much furore off late. Deborah’s climb to number 4 in the World individual UCI ranking has shown that cycling in India is taken very seriously and a lot more is sure to follow. The timing could not have been any better to inaugurate the Satellite centre to World Cycling Centre in India. The persistence of all those involved has finally paid off and will lead to the creation of more inspired athletes from India. Cycling has always been a means of release for me and maximum number of cyclists I meet would only agree with me on this regard. Over the years, I have seen people evolve from cycling for themselves to cycling for causes and even to get more people into cycling. The cycling community has grown to a large extent over the years sufficient enough to influence government bodies to set up cycling lanes and even dedicated cycling days even in the national capital region. Success of such undertakings is what makes me proud to be associated with the lifestyle of cycling and feel it sinful to not wake up in the morning wanting to get out and ride. Race Report: Track Asia Cup Crank CFI Bureau

he indoor cycling Velodrome at Delhi’s IG complex hosted the Track Asia Cup 2015 organized by Cycling Federation of India from 18th to 20th Nov, 2015 with the support of Sports Authority of India and Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India. Track racing in India has picked up momentum with athletes like Deborah Herold winning international accolades and having to host the Track Asia cup in India was only due. With 10 countries participating in the event, it was accredited as Class 1 UCI event and had specially appointed staff for its overseeing. Mr. Frederick Chan of Hong Kong was the Chief Commissaire and was supported by 15 qualified officials from the Cycling Federation of India and an additional 20 local officials who oversaw the conduct very effectively. With over 150 cyclists and team officials from 13 teams across 10 nations like Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Iran, India, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Uzbekistan, UAE, Nepal and Korea present at the stadium and the entire event was covered live by DD Sports to the national audience. The main sponsors were LIC of India, IFFCO TOKIO, ONGC, TI Cycles etc. The championship saw some outstanding performances by the Indian riders winning a total of 13 medals for the Country ranking 3rd in the medal tally. India’s shining star cyclist Ms. Deborah was at her best, where she beat her Korean counterpart in the sprint event and secured the Gold. In Keirin event, where she was a sure start prospect, she had an unfortunate fall missing the probable Gold. Her achievements at this tournament also shot her ranking up to 4th place in the UCI individual ranking from the earlier 10th position.

World Cycling Satellite Centre Crank India CFI Bureau

ver the last few issues, we have been bringing you updates on the Cycling Federation of India’s efforts to bring World Cycling facilities to India. These efforts have paved an opening to greater things to come when on 20 Nov, 2015 the “Satellite Centre” was inaugurated at the IGI Cycling Velodrome in New Delhi by Mr. Injeti Srinivas, Director General, Sports Authority of India. Since March 2014 when the SAI National Cycling Academy (SAINCA) in collaboration with Sports Authority of India & Cycling Federation of India was started, the CFI has been pursuing the cause of establishing this as a Satellite Centre accredited by World Cycling Centre. The recent development makes this centre the third UCI’s satellite centre in the world, after only Japan and Korea. The SAINCA was established with a vision to attain the highest level of performance in the Sport of Cycling, the CFI continued with the proposal and after a number of meetings, this proposal was well taken up by DG and Secretary, SAI and after considerable persuasion the SAI gave the nod to the proposal. With the signing of the MOU between the SAI and Cycling Federation of India to this effect and the academy drew the dreams of establishing a satellite center much closer to reality. After several meetings and discussions between all the stakeholders the MOU was signed between SAI, UCI and CFI on the 9th February 2015 at Thailand to setup a Satellite Centre of the World Cycling Centre, Aigle, Switzerland. Earlier on the 7th July 2015 Mr. Paul Henri Rey, UCI Representative came to Delhi for the inspection of SAI National Cycling Academy. His three day visit carried out many discussion on developing the sport of Cycling in India along with possible improvements that the athletes can benefit from.

Mr. Paul Henri Rey, while reading a message from Mr. Brian Cookson, President, UCI, also wished the WCC Satellite-India a bright future and was hopeful that with the combined efforts of SAI, UCI and CFI, Cycling will achieve the desired results in due course.

healthy way of life is what many seek in our country. While there are many simple ways of maintaining healthy living, our nation has been falling prey to many unhealthy habits and a general outlook that falters on exercise routines giving way to many illnesses including early onset diabetes.

Inculcating a positive attitude towards healthy living can begin with something as simple as awareness. In one of the most fittest city of India, Bengaluru, employees of Lifestyle and Max store organized a cycle ride on 29th Nov, 2015to spread awareness towards prevention of diabetes. Over the last 7 years, they have been carrying out 7kms walkathons involving celebrities and huge turn outs of general public to promote the same cause. This year, the cycle ride and setting up of free diabetes checking centres was their way of giving back to the community.

More such voluntary activities yield in promoting a healthy lifestyle across the nation and Bengaluru being a popular destination for many marathons and cyclothons, is quickly becoming a model city for others to follow.

Charting a course of about 20kms that took them through the heart of the city and onto the historic Cubbon Park, a heaven for fitness enthusiasts, 57 riders spread their message using handouts that had every possible detail regarding diabetes, its effects and prevention methods to citizens of various age groups. Under the guidance of Srinivasa Rao and Ms. Shivla Saxena, the riders managed to raise awareness in many people who later visited the free diabetes check up centres set up various schools and colleges and public institutes. In efforts towards this, SCOTT Sports India has associated with Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad as its official outdoor partner. IIM hosts an annual business summit called Confluence and SCOTT Sports India was present at the summit over its three days. The students were exposed to the 2016 models of bicycles including the specially launched Aspect 655i which is specifically designed and manufactured for the growing community of versatile Indian cyclists. Addressing the guests, Country Head, Jaymin Shah shared, “ We are extremely delighted to be associated with the India’s most Premium Management School IIM Ahmedabad. The IIM Confluence has been a huge success in the first year itself. Youth today understands the importance of Eco friendly transport and a lot of adventure junkies are taking up cycling to raise awareness about a particular cause. We hope to fuel the passion for cycling through many more endeavours like this.”

While our jobs at the country’s only premium cycling magazine gives us the opportunity to test out bikes of different kinds, road bikes have not always seemed real to us until off late. he SCOTT Metrix 20 is the second of the three Made for India bicycles that SCOTT Sports had announced for the year 2016. The bicycle, just like the MTB Aspect 655i MTB is feature packed and is looks intimidating in its stealth grey colour. We take a closer look at what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got and why it works. The obvious thing to notice is its compact geometry. Even the size medium we feature here seemed condense. Being an urban bike, that results in advantages as it needs to be good at fitting itself through gaps. With its urban commute purpose in mind, the monochromatic colour scheme works perfectly well to let it blend with the grey tones of the concrete jungle and also not be prone to thievery. The Metrix 20 boasts of some superior components for an entry level hybrid bicycle. The headset assembly is from Ritchey and seamlessly blends with the theme of the bicycle. The rigid fork keeps the bike and its purpose simple and to the point. The 700 x 35 C tires are a perfect match for the handling the frame is set to offer. Unlike last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sportster Tour that was a similar offering in this range, the Metrix 20 boasts of Tektro Hydraulic brakes coupled with 160mm rotors and offers great control with feathered braking. ith the Talon 4, we are stepping up a notch here. The Talon is an entry level performance bicycle that intends to teach you things on the trail that you never knew existed of or wanted to try. With the provision of performance MAXXIS Ikon tyres the bicycle is clearly meant for some serious off road riding. With a superior choice in groupset components, the Talon 4 has an 8 speed Acera RD coupled with an Altus FD. o all us commuter cyclists, our cycle carries us around and we end up spending a lot of time on it. We have figured shortcuts for ourselves that make the ride our own. Cutting across sections and using the advantage of being able to move with pedestrians by pushing our bikes have become a routine. We have developed a unique way of lifting the bike around while on the move. Ever wondered if there could be an easier way of carrying your bicycle without having to worry about cables or bottle cages? We at the Crank workshop did and we found the Little Lifter from Walnut designs. A product that originated purely out of necessity. Which is also the philosophy of Walnut designs. The Little Lifter is the brain child of designer Geoffery Franklin and is a hand crafted leather strap that holds the bike up by the frame at the down tube and the seat tube. It was inspired by vintage Italian bicycles that had a welded handle that got lost as a design element over the years of frame development. The goal was to bring that convenience back to contemporary bicycle frames. Once strapped, it can be left there and serve as a briefcase handle for our beloved bikes. It uses regular carrying muscles and adds ease to the act of picking and carrying our bicycles. used is all natural and vegetable tanned with naturally occurring grains and markings which makes each and every Little Lifter unique. The only other material used is a nickel plated steel clamps that resemble belt buckles. The installation is an absolute delight and the texture of the leather is naturally non abrasive and does not damage any frame parts. Clearing the brake cables and bottles cages during installation is important. Carrying a bicycle by the top tube can be a thing of the past with the Little Lifter frame handle and the leather and buckles simply adds class to the act.
