The Cobbled Classics

I

ts that time of the year when the road racing world celebrates two vintage classics, the Tour of Flanders (De Ronde) and the Paris-Roubaix which make up the corner stone (or should we say cobble stone) of vintage country road racing which together with the Milan - San Remo, the Liege Bastogne and the Giro the Lombardia are called the “monuments” What makes the Tour of Flanders (approx 230 KM day race) and the Parish Roubaix (approx 250 KM day race) special are the extensive cobbled sections that give the race a vintage appeal. The terrain is a nightmare for equipment throwing every type of mecahnical challenge from punctures, to wheel bends to material stress. The cobbled track is considered an annual test pad for the R&D teams of most manufacturers to test their innovations. And its not just the equipment that is tested. Even the rider. The cobbled sections put that extra stress on the already strained muscles, add to that the raw nature of the race and the lose dust flying which not just enters the pumping lung but also sticks as a thick layer on the sweaty body through the race The cobbled classics have a traditional and a classical appeal with thousands making the annual pilgrimage. The crowds are huge and lined up throughout the track. ( there have been cases of that over enthusiastic spectator grazing the rider and ending his dream) The Tour of Flanders has challenging sharp hills and twists and turns and narrow streets whereas the Paris Roubaix is more flatter but longer and dustier. Its not rare for the peloton to set a pace of average speeds above 50KM per hour

2017 winners was an all Belgian affair. At Flanders It was Belgian Phillippe Gilbert (Team Quick-Step Floor) who made a solo dash for the final 55 kilometres of the race, having broken clear on the second ascent of the Oude Kwaremont – and that after being part of an elite selection that formed on the Muur 40 kilometres earlier. At Paris

This years cobblestone deserve a special mention for Slovakian Peter Sagan (Bora Hansgrohe) who was unlucky both times. At Flanders Peter was involved in an unfortunate clip that brought down many including Van Avermaet and in Paris Roubaix Peter went for an extreme endurance strategy riding alone in the lead pack through the race wanting to be a part of everything but twice suffered a most unfortunate mechanical issue once at the beginning and second in the final stages with a puncture. That that the pit crew wasn’t fast enough and did not give that butt push and the sticky finger from the support car was not good enough and ended his dream as he saw a whole peloton pass Anyway that’s what the classics are made of. Lot of tradition, spectator participation, spring colors, cobbled sections where one could drop 10-15 seconds, high speeds, peloton crashes . All in all it’s a must watch if you are cycling buff

Roubaix the finish was a nail biting affair and went all the way to the last micro second at the Velodrome at Roubaix. It was once a Belgian Greg Van Avarmaet (Team BMC) who made it to the poidum top. It was an exciting finish amongst the three who had been a lead pack for the previous 40 KM that included Zdenek Stybar (Team QuickStep Floors) and Sabastian Langaveld (Team Canondale Drapac). Stybar who was accused by the other two of not cooperating in the finish stages couldnt make it a first Czech victroy ever. The legendary “king of the cobblestones” Tom Boonen announced his retirement in style with a top 15 finish at Roubaix

High profile riders make it to the race. Belgian Vice Prime Minister Kris Peeters and UCI-president Brian Cookson, cycled the 74 kilometers partly under guidance at Flanders. Ex-pro cyclists Ferdi Van Haute and Ludo Dierckxens, Fabian Cancellara and Paolo Bettini also mae it a point to take in the spirit. At Paris-Roubaix the last sections this year had huge protraits of two time winners lining up the track If it is cycling history that you must experience then it is here

IndustryNews GIANTS innovation edge at Taipei

T

he annual Taipei Bike Show 2017 saw Giant using its home-ground advantage to display its techno prowess. The highlight was the new Giant proprietary tubeless and puncture protection system. The demonstration of revolutionary product by slamming the wheel on an inchlong sharp nail was dramatic. The tubeless puncture protection kit can withstand upto 400 linear 3.5mm diameter punctures. The sealant comes into play immediately after the tire is pierced and seals within one revolution of the wheel!Ideal for cyclists Also on display was Giant’s Conduct

Hydraulic braking system for road bikes. The Conduct system allows you to convert your road bike’s mechanical disc brake system to hydraulic. The oil reservoir sits on the front of the four-bolt stem (basically replacing the stem faceplate) making it a suitable choice for most road bikes. With the Conduct system in place, the brake feel and the responsiveness sees an improvement, while the brake fade under severe load, decreases. The above two innovations were bike focused while on display was also some innovative products for the rider. The all new range of Giant helmets with

the MIPS (Multiple Impact Protection System) a patented system developed by biomechanics at the Royal Institute of Technology and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. It mimics the brain’s own protection system inside the skull. Apart from the above key displays were a display of the new triathlon kits, a new e-bike range and an island display for Liv, the women only bike brand from the Giant stable. The pavilion also had a virtual reality room, where one could take a picture of themselves with their favorite Giant bicycle.

The Santini product and design team worked painstakingly to produce a garment fit for a Grand Tour Champion.Maglia AzzurraJersey has been designed for the best climber and Maglia Bianca for best fastest young rider. The jersey of best sprinter is still kept under wraps.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING TIPS

S

trength & conditioning is a very crucial element in a cyclists training regime. Repetitive motions of the lower limbs during distance cycling puts a lot of stress on the lower back, knees and ankles.. not to forget the role of the shoulders and arms as well. Core strength is another very important aspect. Cyclists need extremely strong quadriceps, supported by the hamstrings, back and calf muscles. Depending on the duration and frequency of cycling the routines may alter.Front squats, overhead squats, dead lifts, box jumps and clean & press would be the ideal combination. The number of reps, frequency , load and duration would vary depending on whether one is a casual cyclist, triathlete, endurance or duration cyclists (tour de france), sprint cycling (BMX, Velodrome). The load in duration events would be around 60-70% of a persons 1 repetition max, whereas sprint events would be around 85-90%. Equipments : Ideally barbells with weights would be most suited, but depending on convenience Kettle bells, training ropes, sand bags, TRX or even tyres can be an option. All these can augment ones training to be a more complete competitive cyclist.

F

Cannondale - SLATE 105

T

he All-Road category has been quite of growing trend slowly turning into a need here in India. If your love riding both on the Road & Gravel you should pay attention to Cannondale’s new Slate. Cannondale over the years has come up the most amazing designs & technology on their bikes, which they have taken more of a lead-not-follow approach which resulted in many innovations like the Lefty fork, BB30 which are now being used in their latest Slate. Cannondale has been primarily designed as a road bike but also capable of handling other than just tarmac to keep up with our adventurous spirit. There has been a lot of hype around the world with the Slate; an All Road, Gravel/Adventure bike equipped with a lefty 30mm Suspension & fitted with 650B/27.5in wheels. At first it may sound whacky but you need to see it to believe it, but we advice that you ride it too. The Slate’s geometry was designed to be lesser aggressive with a shorter reach & taller front end & able to handle itself off the Road & on gravel. That’s what the Slate is all about. It might have a suspension & wide tires but it is a Road Bike at heart say’s Cannondale’s key engineer David Devine who was working on the Slate project. Compared to the Cannondale’s SuperSix Evo there

16

are minor changes like a slacker headtube which is 1.5 degree less which resulted in a marginally increased wheelbase. The bottom bracket has also been set higher to give you more pedal clearance when you riding off the tarmac. The Slate 105 which is currently available in India weights 11kgs & the 650B/27.5in wheels may be slightly smaller but the outer circumference is the same as a 700c wheel with 23mm tyres. The tyres takes a little bit more effort to keep them going but once they pick up speed they roll very well. The Tire clearance on the frame is good enough to fit a 42mm Tyre & even bigger on the front due to the Lefty fork. The Bike is fitted with Panaracer 650x42c tubeless ready tyres which offer performance & grip both on the roads & on gravel. The Mavic XM419 wheelsets are very light & are tubeless ready. The Wheels & Tyres being both Tubeless ready is excellent for riders wanting to convert it to Tubeless with just addition of that tubeless kit that comprises of the Sealant Fluid & Valves. The Lefty Oliver with 30mm Travel is standard across all Slate’s. There is a lockout button on the top of the suspension leg to activate the suspension. The Lefty suspension has close to zero sag meaning that it is not always necessary to have the lockout active even when you are sprinting out of the saddle as it is very well damped & composed. The Lefty fork is stiffer than any suspension fork on the market & hence there is no unwanted flex from the Lefty & has direct handling. The Brakes are Shimano’s R505 hydraulic disc brakes with 160mm rotors on the front & 140mm rotors on the rear. The braking power is quite superb giving it more of Mountain bike like braking feel . The Slate was developed on the same True Flow Modeling computer as the CAAD12, which has allowed to develop best tube profiles & wall thickness for different requirements of all the individual tubes of the frame. The Slate has an all alloy frame manufactured with Cannondale’s Smart Form technology to produce the most precise tubes in the world. The tube profiles of the Slate varies with every section of the frame, wide & flat on the seat-stays & chain-stays to eliminate road vibration for a smoother ride, it has a huge downtube, the top tube is flat towards the seatpost. The greatest things about the Slate is having the open opportunities of the gravel road when you are on you tarmac rides when you just might opt a smooth trail in a nearby forest you are passing or just riding on the broken tarmac passing through the villages across the country on your long weekend rides.

Highly Inflammable

THE PSYNYDE FURAN starting point to other specialty chemicals. What better name for our first production bike which can take on any terrain, glides under the radar and is built to accelerate the fun on trails! – FURAN” On the design board, the team narrowed down the numbers and created its first prototype. After almost a year of real world testing by the team riders and tweaking the geometry and build, they finalized the Furan’s version you see today.

Furan, a flammable, highly volatile liquid with a boiling point close to room temperature! It’s also the first production mountain bike by Pune’s custom bicycle manufacturer - Psynyde Bikes. The team at Psynyde Bikes is a mix of pro mountain bikers and expert road cyclists from India. Tinkering with bicycle components for over 17 years, they started the custom frames and performance components project around 2010. “With excellent reviews that we received from our customers who bought our hand-made frames and components, in 2015 winters we decided to take the Psynyde Bikes venture to the next level” says Vinay Menon, Co Founder Mountain bikers at heart, it was set that their first production bike will be a hardtail mountain bike. A hardtail which can go uphill as well as bomb downhill.A bike which could handle 3 Hour climbs and then allow the rider to jump down cliffs and blaze off steep chutes. A bike which would fire-up the trails the moment you hit dirt. A “do it all” hardtail which is light yet stiff while still capable of taking the edge off the rough terrain. The name FURAN itself is interesting as it is innovative. It came about during an afternoon brainstorming. “We came across the chemical FURAN, which had some interesting characteristics that caught our attention! Furan is a colorless, flammable, highly volatile liquid with a boiling point close to room temperature. It is soluble in common organic solvents, including alcohol, ether, and acetone, and is slightly soluble in water. Furan is used as a

The team went for an innovative crowd-funding route to raise funds besides some support from the cycling community and a few investors for funding the project. They decided to run6000 series aluminum hydro formed tubes to create the Furan’s chassis. While trying ways to manufacture the Furan in Pune, the team son realized that the volume and quality they were looking at would simply not afford them the scale benefits in India for now. The team eventually turned to China to source and collaborated with an established unit that welds our frames under its strict quality standards The current production Furan includes all the details that makes it a durable, strong trail hardtail of international standards. Tapered head tube, internal cable routing, a compact rear end with wider bottom bracket for stability. Extended top tube length, slack head angle combined with a short stem and riser bars, 120mm suspension fork to get the rider through gnarly, steep terrain. Maintaining a core chassis on the Furan we are offering the complete bike in three build options. A Shimano groupset for beginners (Rs.36,000/-), one for the intermediate (Rs52,000/-) level riders and another for the experts (Rs.1,10,000/-) who have advanced riding skills and like racing occasionally. There is also the ‘Frame only’ (Rs.25,000/-). Giving the riders liberty to build the way they wish. In January 2017, the team started assembling and shipping out the Furan from its Pune headquarters “We have tied up with fine dealers in major cities who share the same ideas with us of giving riders the best riding experience. We have started getting more dealer enquiries from across the country looking for the Furan after they saw the product! We are currently in the process of securing our first overseas distributor too. We’ll keep you all updated on the progress as things start rolling on” A team of athletes who are India’s top mountain and some North American riders that has given some valuable design inputs is currently pushing the Furan to its limits. With positive reviews by its customers about the bike’s ride quality and pricing the team at Psynyde hopes the FURAN will help them share the fun of riding

Aiming for FIT at FIFTY Midlife and Cycling

We’ve all heard of that now famous acronym for all those middle aged men in lycra’s, MAMIL’s, zippin around on their gleaming expensive bikes, fit as hell with washboard abs, low BMI’s, superhuman endurance, giving even the fittest of the college youngsters a run for their greasy hamburger and beer. Meet the growing crowd of riders in their midlife aiming for that fit at fifty goal! When life came calling, most of the now 40 something’s, embraced it with enthusiasm and commitment and dived head first into fulfilling their aspirations. Life was much simpler back then in 80’s everything had an order, the choices were limited and opportunities were mostly measured. As the generation grew to its forties, and the country as a whole moved from Chetaks, Ambassadors and Fiats to Beemers, Porches and Ferraris, a new wave of thoughts and ideas impacted the lives of the people. Soon, fortywas the new thirty for most and the men and women alike and they were no more doing the same thing as their parents did at a similar phase of life. The concepts of Work-Life balance and living one’s own life and following ones passion to the fullest had really gone viral. CRANK caught up with four such young at heart cycling enthusiasts who have converted their childhood memories of cycling into their current life passion and a way to break the mundane

Ram Sajeewan Anuragi A native of Hamirpur, Bundelkhand, UP and an engineer from IIT Kanpur working with GAIL (India) Limited had the typical life till an incident at work changed the way he commuted. He was denied a lift to work and it hurt him immensely. To get independent he bought himself a bicycle and there started his journey of a new life. Then he followed it up with running and was soon into the groove. In all he has completed about 28 races that includes 11 Full marathons with a best timing of 4:38:36 and 4 Ultra Marathons of 50-75-80kms apart from 7 half Marathons and about 6 Triathlons of various categories. He is currently based in Bangalore and enjoys cycling as part of his training and also riding to Nandi is always his favorite activity. While he does all these to keep himself fit his wife plays a huge role in all his achievements. He even borrowed money to buy his Scott Speedster 40 from his wife, which he plans to return with interest. “Cycling is a very good cross-training for my long running events and it allows me to burn fast and I can eat good food when I know I will be burning calories during cycling. He insists

that all the youngsters should engage in some physical activity. I do not see any special effort required for maintaining good balance between my work and fitness schedule”, he adds.

N. Anil Kumar A Business Unit Head with Bristol-Myers Squibb, a multinational pharmaceutical company has the regular corporate job with all its benefits and bane. “There are pressures and challenges we tend to believe are unsurmountable. At times, we forget, or it never occurs to us that we are capable of doing more than we ever did, that we have facets of ourselves we never explored, that we don’t know who we are or what our real limits are. I am fortunate to have a lifestyle built around endurance sports of which cycling is an integral part. At 45,I began nursing a dream to do an Ironman Triathlon race which led to my second phase of cycling in life, the first being all the cycling I did in my teenage for commuting with the basic gearless cycles.” Cycling for Anil is like meditation and a way to get off his stress. He loves the challenges of

the distances, duration, geography and speed. It gives him immense mental strength and helps him prepare for the unexpected. “One of the precious advantages of cycling and endurance sports is the ability one develops to manage the mind over body” He has completed 1 marathon, 9 half marathons, 1 hill half marathon,1 duathlon and 2 Olympic distance triathlons and is right now completely consumed by his dream of doing an Ironman race someday which he knows is not easy, but as they say ‘one day at a time’ is his mantra. He has been lucky to have found great support system in his family. While they don’t complain at times Anil feels a bit guilty but then endurance sports has also made him a master of multitasking and he is able to successfully juggle between his work, family and his passion. He believes “One of the best decisions I took in my life is to take up endurance sports. It has made me a “better me”.”

J. John Moses A father of two lovely kids and a sport enthusiasts is now settled in Australia and is living up his life with his passion. “I am a sports enthusiast who grew up playing soccer in my childhood and have great passion about sports. I had never rode a road bike when I was in India. I came to Australia on early 2010 and was focusing much on work though I was very inspired by the sporting culture in Melbourne and it pushed me to get into the active lifestyle especially cycling which I was missing for the last few years.” What started with a casual 100km ride ended up in making John an aspiring Triathlete. Till now he has completed several cycling events and triathlon of various distance with the highlight of completing Full Ironman (3.8 kms Swim in the ocean + 180 kms cycling + 42.2 kms run) in December 2015. He plans to do the WSTC Altona – Race 6 – Sprint Triathlon distance in april apart fromChallenge Melbourne – Half Ironman distance triathlon (1.9 kms swim + 90 kms + 21.1 running) with a Sub 6 hours finish, Ironman Australia – Port Macquire in May 2017 or Ironman Cairns in June 2017 and also plans to Train for Crit races around Melbourne next summer.

Sreekrishnan Hisstory began with the The First Vodafone Cycling Marathon in Bangalore in Oct 014. Working in Vodafone & being a part of the event team, it was only a matter of time before the bug bit him. He picked up his first cycle, a Hercules Rodeo and like they say, there has nolooking back. He then upgraded to an MTB and then to his favorite, road bike – SCOTT Speedster 40, both of them purchased from ProCycle, his favorite destination for all his bike needs. He is even known as Sir Scott in the local cycling circles for his love of the brand.“My wife, Priya, initially was not very convinced and given the traffic scenario in Bangalore, she thought I was being very irrational. But today, far from being a cynic, she has become one of my strongest supporters in my cycling journey. I feel really lucky” He recalls himself, pre his cycling days as someone who loved to eat, sleep, watch TV & just laze around. Cycling changed it all. His day now starts at 4.30 am and he is in bed by 10 pm” Cycling has instilled a lot of discipline and managing time has been his learning that helps him even at his workplace. As the saying goes “To gain something you need to lose something, I lost 6 inches around my waist, reduced 10 kgs, gave up on my extra sleep, stopped watching some of my favorite TV serials” Apart from the health angle, SK, as he is popularly known, it has bought him new friends who come from all walks of life and not just his regular friends from work and acquaintances. He loves touring and has done many an interesting routes in and around Bangalore with night halts and non-stop riding hours. 2016 has been an exceptionally peak-cycling year forhim, he has not only completed his SR Title he also successfully completed the Tour of Nilgiris (TFN) and is on the on the cusp of completing 20,000 Kms ( 194 Kms more to go) on the saddle in less than two years. “The family joke is I have done more kms on the cycle than on my SUV.” So, Ladies and Gentlemen in your forties. Fit at Fifty is not a distant dream but an achievable reality on your cycle…CRANK hopes your tribe increases …

Charminar to Hitec an “Affair” on two wheels

T

he city of Nizams that was once the buzzing epicenter of culture and cuisine is now a thriving new age IT city. And with the new age, came to town the new trends, cycling being one of them. As riding a bicycle is a great way to traverse the contrast of the twin cities of Hyderabad & Secunderabad. A 30 km ride is all you need to go from the Charminar at the epi center of the old city with its numerous Irani Cafes to Hi-Tech city with more modern buildings and architecture. ‘The Bike Affair’is a popular Bike Shop chain in the city and is also a riding club with a huge list of riders from various walks of life.

Tuesday mornings the road bikers get together to do a training ride doing hill repeats or more of the steady long efforts. With summer coming in the night rides will also start on Tuesday nights.

They have some very interesting signature rides, with some themes associated with the rides whether it is to ride to a scenic place around lakes, going to some historical places like the Charminar or Golconda Forts or a ride culminating at a new place for breakfast. The regulars can bring their friends or family members to try out cycling for which rental bikes are also available at the store.

The store is also dedicated to riding for Social causes. They did a Surprise Santa ride a couple of years ago where in the riders pooled in money to buy christmas gifts for children, dressed as Santas and rode to the regional Cancer Hospital Childrens wing and gave away gifts, Cut a cake and played with the kids.

While Saturdays are leisure days and are the best time for a new rider to join in. These are short 30 - 45 km rides at a casual pace. Sundays are faster, more intense rides (and often clubbed with some serious breakfast options). The distances are between 60 -120 km. Sankarpally, Chilkur, Chevella and Anantapur are some of the popular destinations these rides are headed to. The roads are mostly State Highways with reasonable tree cover and much lesser or almost nil vehicular traffic.

There are also some special rides which happen occasionally like MTB trail rides, weekend rides to Srisailam etc. The store also conducts a few long rides of varying durations through the year including a week long ride in some beautiful locales in December. The next long ride is a Climbing Bootcamp at Ooty from April 27 to May 1 for which registrations are open.

So if you are in the city and are looking to get started with cycling, or looking for serious riding company, do get in touch with them at guys at the bike affair.

The club is also exploring new avenues to introduce cycling as a way of cross training. This summer in association with the Hyderabad Runners group a 50 km ride is being organized on Saturdays to give a cross training options to the runners. There are many runners who are good cyclists and the group has quite a few Super Randonneurs amongst them. The heritage ride

QUICK FIX A FLAT

A

s they say failure is part of the success story and an essential one at that. So are punctures an essential evil in every cyclists story. No matter how correct is the tyre pressure is or how good the road conditions are you are likely to experience a flat tyre sometime during your training ride or God forbid during your race. Some basic things towards good health of your tyre recommended by the experts at CRANK, for that ‘hopefully’ puncture free ride. Use tyres of correct TPI (threads per inch) according to your use. Tyres with higher thread counts usually have finer weaves that make them more flexible. Regular inspection of your tyres for cracks or correct pressure before the race is key to a good race experience and better speed on the bike In case you have a flat, move away from the race or a busy route and find a relatively clean, uniform area. Quickly remove the affected wheel and remove tyre with the help of a tyre lever. Replace old tube with new tube after carefully inspecting the inner surface for any unevenness. Be careful on pinch flats Portable pumps come handy and every

rider must carry portable pump with reading gauge, these days Co2 cartridge is a popular option and it comes with a handy adaptor and makes your job easier Some of the other precautionary measures include tyre liner or converting your tyre into a tubeless version as alternate options or using a gel tube Liners are made of durable, lightweight urethane, it acts as providing a protective layer between the outer tyre and inner tube. On the flip side, it can make your wheels little heavier but a very good option on training rides and off road ones Tubeless tyre is on the other hand the next step with modifications required with a tubeless ready wheel set. Tubeless-ready wheels have specific hooks on the rim to keep tyres in place, and are therefore less likely to pop off. Tubeless valve, Tubeless sealant, Tubeless specific tyre, Tyre levers and Floor pump - preferably a ‘Charge’ pump are other essentials For rider extremely conscious about race time it is always better to include practicing fixing flats before actual event can help manage such unfortunate situations
