hutan is a popular destination for people who seek solace for the mind and body. It is known for climbing and trekking activities and the pious Buddhist monasteries on the hill tops that offer the spiritual peace that one might be looking for. Visiting a country like Bhutan should be on everybody’s list. It ranks no.1 in gross happiness index in Asia and the kind nature of the people and their way of life has a lot to do with it. The Bhutanese terrain is rolling and offers scenic views of flat plains and high mountain cliffs at every bend. The Bhubaneswar Cycling and Adventure Club (BCAC) could not have picked a better destination than Bhutan to set out on their first international cycling expedition. Ajay Kumar Nanda, who runs the 22bikes cycle store which is currently at the forefront of promoting cycling in the region of Bhubaneswar was a part of this voyage shares a few insights with Crank. On the 9th of October, 2015 six members of the club sought Lord Buddha’s blessings at the Dhauli Stupa, Orissa and set off the following day on their journey. “Our group consisted of a few top officials, Sri Manoj Ahuja, IAS, Principal Secretary Cooperation, Sri Lalit Das, IPS, Special secretary Home Department, Sri Sanjeeb Panda,IPS, IGP Special Armed Police, Sri Manoj Prusty, entrepreneur, Sri Akhay Padma Mohapatra, entrepreneur, and myself. BCAC has been actively promoting cycling in Odisha for quite a few years now and organize regular rides for the community.

We make it a point to arrange at least one large scale ride a year. This year’s ride to Bhutan was a few notches above the Manali to Leh ride done last year.” says Ajay. Our route took us through Bhadrak, Baleswar Medinipur, Bardhhaman, Berhempore, Malda, Kishanganj, Jalpaigudi to reach Phuentscholing, the border town of Bhutan covering a distance of 1170 kilometres in 9 days at an average of about 130kms per day. At Phuentscholing, entry permits required to visit Bhutan were processed and the only documents required were either a valid Indian passport or a Voter’s ID card. The team at Thimpu

The Bhutanese authorities were concerned of our safety and did not let us cycle on the highway leading up to the capital town of Thimpu. We boarded a vehicle, loaded our bikes and headed to the capital. As we entered deep into the country, we began to make a few curious observations like the uniform construction model of all the buildings with an ethnic facade. The hospitality and concern offered by the citizens added to the charm of the new environment. Bhutan in all its modernity has maintained its orthodox nature in a pristine manner. The men wear their traditional attire called Gho and women wear a Kira and these are adorned without fail while at government offices and schools. The traditions of a country are what help shape its future and Bhutan’s traditions seem to be doing really well for the country. The next few days were spent exploring nearby places like Paro, the sharp climb to Taktsang Palphug Monastery also known as the Tiger’s nest monastery situated at 10,240m which is where Guru Padmasambhava, the tutelary deity of Bhutan is said to have meditated while introducing Buddhism to the region. While the currency of Bhutan is Ngultrum and is of equal value to the Indian rupee, both rupee and Ngultrum are accepted across all businesses. However, we found that food and was quite expensive in comparison to back home but the contrast in the flavours made up for the cost. During our stay, we met his Excellency Lyonpo Namgay Dorji, Minister of Finance of Bhutan Government, Sri Kinzang Wangdi, Cabinet Secretary, Namgay Jhamkar, Mayor of Galephu city, Secretary Economic Affairs, Chief Election Commissioner of Bhutan, Dasho Karma Tsering Namgyal, Consul General of Bhutan in Kolkata consulate, Mr. Subrat Das, Counsellor in Indian Embassy at Bhutan and other senior dignitaries of Bhutan. Much cultural and exchange of opinion later, while finding commonalities of Buddhist sites of Bhutan and Odisha, we realized that we travelled over a 1000kms to feel closer to home. On our return, we cycled from Paro to Thimpu along the rivers Paro Chhu and Thimpu Chhu covering 62kms and heading out of the country. We had covered a total of 1300kms and decided to return home via motor transport. Saying goodbye was not easy, but it had to be done and we set homeward looking to close this chapter and start another challenge for the members of the Bhubaneswar Cycling and Adventure Club.

he 12th National Mountain biking championship was held in Pune between the 29th Oct, 2015 and 2nd Nov, 2015. The MTB nationals are a much looked out for event in the country. This year’s race was held at the Oxford Golf resort with a track that is the best among the tracks used for TB races till date. The track included steep downhill sections along with many technical sections set in gravel paths which was aimed at seeding out the weaker riders. State and services representative athletes competed in a total of 16 categories ranging from under 18 junior and sub junior categories to Elite riders. Karnataka won three out of four overall championship categories with Bangalore’s Kiran Kumar Raju bagging first place in the Elite Men category.

T
he National Mountain biking championship sanctioned by UCI and approved and monitored by the Cycling Federation of India is a tough competition between the state teams and the team from services and railways. Many mountain biking enthusiasts have been showing up as spectators at the tracks to watch their favourite teams compete. In the recently concluded 12th edition of the race, with an enthused sponsor like Giant Starkenn aboard, the track was thrown open to these very spectators to participate in an open category. This move was supported by the CFI with a motive to give more riders a taste of how a competitive MTB race track would feel and therefore encourage more people to take up the sport of cycling and specifically mountain biking. Oxford golf resort of Pune has a natural 5km long MTB track and was well utilized for both the elite championship races of Youth (12–14 years), Subjunior(under 16), Junior (under 18 years) and Elite categories (above 18 years) and even the amateur open category. The track has gained a reputation for being the most suitable and challenging track used at a national level championship yet. Mr. Pravin V Patil, Managing Director and CEO, Giant Starkenn Bicycles said, “Since cycling has been gaining popularity not just as a transport option

or a fitness regime but also as a sport. To promote this thought, we aimed to introduce the ‘Open’ category. n our previous issue, we brought to you news from the exclusive press and dealer launch of SCOTT Sports India’s 2016 offering where we mentioned to you about the much awaited Made for India bicycle. While a few pages later in this issue, you will read what our first thoughts on the Aspect 655i are, the 655i made its first public debut at the Autocar Performance & STUFF Expo 2015 held at Mumbai. SCOTT Sports India has been showcasing their range of products at the expo for the second time now. This year, along with the 655i, a host of Syncros components and accessories were also launched for public viewing at the expo. The new range of SCOTT junior bicycles were also available at the expo and were an immediate hit with the younger audience. The junior bikes are a new addition to their fleet of product from this year onwards and the response at the expo seems positive as of now.

The big boy toys across the MTB, Hybrid and Road category of 2016 bicycles were also on display and managed to grab quite a few eyeballs. While there were many takers for the Made for India Aspect 655i, the Scott Carbon Fibre CR1 20 road bike stole the show by being displayed at the Hot Stuff gallery at the expo.

usshera signifies conquering of the impossible through persistent effort and getting prepared for jubilant things to come. ACCORD (Action for Community Organisation, Rehabilitation and Development) organizes the biannual Go MAD cycle tour to the town of Gudalur nestled in the Nilgiri mountain range of Ooty.

Go! MAD is a fund raising cycle ride. It requires riders to pledge to raise an amount Rs. 50,000/- for the entire trip or Rs. 25,000/- for just the first leg of the ride to Mysore. The ride is a total of about 400kms from Bengaluru to Mysuru and onwards to Gudalur and back. The riders are provided with facilities like medical and ridr support along with boarding, food and hydration while out on the road. The funds raised are used to protect the way of life of the adivasis of the region. The small and quaint villages of the region are fast being succumbed to deteriorating health care and economic situations. Education of the children of these families is also crucial and the funds raised are diverted efficiently through the watchful eye of ACCORD. Every year, the Go! Mad ride sees a vibrant participation of serious to beginner riders.

The Dusshera edition of the ride saw a pit stop at Mysuru during the festivities and the 20 participants from various walks of life enjoyed every bit of the ride while they saw terrains of all kinds, from village roads to back trails to shortcuts through paddy fields and fast tarmac sections scattered with frequent pit stops at canals and varied water bodies. Over the last few issues, we have been talking to you about the SCOTT Aspect 655i. Since its announcement in September, the bike has gained much anticipation. SCOTT Sports India had announced 3 new bikes under the new segment called the Made For India. The details of these bicycles were kept carefully under the wraps.
At Crank, we were able to take a closer look at the 655i and right from the colour of the bicycle, SCOTT seems to have gotten everything right to satisfy the Indian customer.
The first of the bikes from the Made for India series to hit the market is the Aspect 655i, MTB. The bike is a looker and the first 100 to roll out are priced at Rs. 33,000/- and will be raised to Rs. 36,000/- later. The bike has a 26� wheel and a set of top notch components on it that makes it a

Whether you are looking for a commuter or a bike that can introduce you to trail riding, the 655i has every reason to be one of the go to bikes.
Feature wise, the bike has a 100mm SR Suntour suspension, Tektro hydraulic disk brakes with a 160mm rotor and a comfortable All 6061 Double butted Alloy frame to go with it. The Syncros handlebar is wide enough for trails and even manoeuvring through traffic. Gearing on the bicycle is also of competitive levels and has a Shimano Altus 8 speed at the rear and a Shimano 3 speed at the Crank. With a good choice in pedals and cockpit parts like the brake levers, the bike manages to have very little objections

The first of the bikes we will delve in to is the Giant Roam 3. A hybrid feature loaded for all kinds of terrains. The roam 3 has not seen much development in the last 2 years and for good reason. It has been thriving on the success formula of functionality. The design and colour scheme update on the 2016 version however is a welcome sight and gives the bike a more urban and mass appeal. The dark blue frame with white and yellow highlights give the bicycle a neon flavour without making it too loud. The bike is also available in a subtle black and white colour combination. Component wise, the bike features the successful combination of lockable suspension and relaxed riding geometry teamed with 8 speed Acera gears with the provision of a megarange cog making your climbing rations dearer to most beginners and touring riders.

e all have that one friend who does not care much for safety and will ride out without strapping on a helmet at the least. Off late, the internet has been abuzz with bad commuter crashes that would have been less damaging if a helmet was worn. When we recommend our fellow riders to plug one on, the common rebuttal we face is “Where do I stow it away when I’m not riding?” Our solutions have varied from strapping it to the back pack to continue wearing it like a hat and that is when we heard of UK based Jeffrey Woolf, founder of the world’s best folding helmet, the Morpher.
