The financial year comes to a close and we have to admit its been a rather difficult year for the industry all around. brand owners, dealers and other ancillary stakeholders, all have faced a decline in business. We hope the next year will be better for everyone. Through the year we have seen a lot of support coming in from various state governments to support cycling. Gujarat we must admit has been at the forefront amongst the many and we congratulate them for another signature event. CFI continues its glorious service to the sport. At the recently held track championships in Malaysia the track was streaking blue. Easow who we have been tracking ended up with a triple haul of mint. The Junior team out classed the Japan team in the finals on the opening day of the event. Our young sensation Esow, who is just 17 years of age proved the dominance of sprinting event of Indian team by winning the other two sprinting events of Keirin and Individual sprint. He not only created history by winning all three sprinting Olympic events but was the only male cyclist winning three Gold Medals in junior category. Coffee with Shiven
W
e at CRANK have been following this young turk for a few years now and his performance and achievements have not been short on any count. That, we are sure is the spark the guys at Cannondale noticed and have have proudly onboarded him as a supported rider. Shiven began earning his stripes from his under 19 days primarily on a MTB in the north and was famously called the mountain goat for the climbing ability that he seems to be naturally endowed with. Today Shiven is maturing and has a rare talent displaying his skills both as a shredder and a roadie. MTB seems to be Shivens first love. “I started racing with MTB, so naturally I’m more drawn towards MTB than the road. It’s the immersive all around experience that MTB provides and I miss that while on paved roads. Also the freedom to go anywhere comes with MTB. But on the other hand, road bikes are meant to be fast, and I really enjoy the way they accelerate and leave me wanting for more of the G force” says Shiven. “While there is less competition in MTB, the field in Road Racing around the country is pretty strong. MTB being a younger sport is still growing and the events have a long way to go whereas road races are logistically more easier and
8
CRANK with ProCycle APRIL 15TH, 2018
organisers have already a lot of experience with them” adds Shiven. Shiven now plans to pursue riding full time and aims to represent India at the international events. We at Crank caught up with Shiven to talk about various topics ranging from riding style to training plans to race strategy CRANK: How can one prepare for a long-distance ride, especially if one is an amateur? The first thing is to get your equipment right. Consider the terrain you will be riding and choose a bike appropriately. Next is to set up the bike according to your body, the bike fit. You don’t want a long distance ride turning into a punishment for the body. Bike fit will help you to correct your posture on the bike and make it enjoyable. I use the Cannondale Super Six Evo (CRANK has reviewed this baby) fitted with Shimano 105 group set, Carbon Frame, Shimano RS 11 wheels, with overall weight of 8.3 kgs with pedals, for my multiday tours. For my off road I use my MTB- Scalpel (Full Carbon Frame, Shimano XTR 1*11 Drivetrain, Lefty 2.0 Fork, Shimano XTR Pedals, weight with Pedals 11.5kgs). I also own the Cannondale
Synapse (Disc Brakes, Shimano 105 Group set) for my regular rides.
CRANK: How does one train for multiday tours that have good climbs?
Nutrition: - While riding for long distance, your body uses a lot of fuel, which also needs to be replenished. Consider eating every 4560 minutes to keep the energy levels up, the harder you push, the more fuel you need. Staying hydrated is equally important, make sure you consume about 500mL of fluid- water/ electrolytes every hour.
The thing about multi day tours is that you are putting a lot of saddle time(5-7Hours) not just for one day, but for a few consecutive days. Your body should be adept to this cycle of suffering and recovering. A good way to do it is to simulate the tour few weeks before and see how fit you are and what areas of your riding require improvement; is it endurance? Nutrition? Recovery? Climbing? Descending? If the tour involves a lot of climbing, including some long climbs in the training would be a good idea. Every extra gram of weight counts on the climbs, so try to shed those extra kilos if you can. Keep a track of your progress and fine tune your plan based on the results.
Unlike common prevailing myth of working out empty stomach, you should have a good breakfast 2-3 hour before the ride; carbs like Oats/Muesli/Porridge/Cornflakes/Buckwheat can be a good option. One should also keep refueling throughout the ride so that you don’t feel out of energy.
CRANK: How should one manage their diet during training? Training & Motivation: - I train intervals during the weekdays which help me boost my anaerobic levels while fitting in the shorter time that I can spend in the weekdays. On weekends I train longer rides which include trails as well. I love both ascending and descending and believe while on a bike, there’s never a dull moment. All this will only help, only if you have the right motivation to do it. Having a friend to ride with makes it easy as you both can keep pushing each other. If you have to do it solo, a good way is to set a target that is aspirational. For me, the constant motivation is to be a better version of myself than I was yesterday and to make my folks and the nation proud someday. Essential kit: - It is always good to be prepared for the worst. Keeping a basic toolkit in the back pocket on those self-supported rides to include, a spare tube, a mini pump, puncture kit and a basic multi tool etc. can save a lot of trouble.
Eat a good amount of carbohydrates before the workout and during the workout depending on the duration and focus on protein post a ride. The nutrients can be procured from various sources depending upon what’s available and what’s the taste but I think it’s a good idea to mix and match and experiment until you find out what works best for you. For me it is either muesli, oats, porridge, buckwheat in milk before the ride. Bananas, Energy Bars, Sandwiches during the ride. Paneer, Green Vegetables, Boiled Lentils, Pulses with rice post the long rides. To make all this work perfectly it is important to keep it fun and interesting one way or the other and always be ready to push the barriers. Photo credit - Deepthi Indukuri

Ma’am Mayoress On Wheels ! Nikita Lalwani
T
his International Woman’s day, Crank brings you the story of Nikita Lalwani, an Instrumentation Engineer by profession and a cycling advocate by passion, who is committed to change the way we commute in India. Her story started in 2014, when she discovered the joy of commuting to work that not only helped her stay fit but also kept her commute time on check. Soon a few friends and colleagues joined in and that gave Nikita a life mission. She founded Cycling Cities (cyclingcities. in), one of its kind of online and offline cycling ecosystem which has
the vision to make cities in India cycling friendly with at least one third of the population preferring cycling as a commute option and also as a part of lifestyle. Nikita, through Cycling Cities is reintroducing cycling for fun, adventure and ultimately a sustainable commute choice for shorter trips. Cycling Cities is currently engaged in organizing regular cycling events around health, heritage and fun in Vadodara City and is committed to bringing cycling culture into the urban lifestyle in India. The team is coming up with an online platform that will address the needs of cyclists from across the country. While researching about commuting, she realised that the probability of someone getting onto the saddle after trying out on a hired or borrowed cycle is much higher than buying in the first instant. That finding led to Nikita to set up TRING (Try Cycling). The Cycle Stations was piloted in 2016 by renting different cycles with helmets, guidance and initial support rides for people who wanted to try out commuting. To get more people into the fold Cycling cities also organises variety of fun and adventure rides for people in Baroda. The most popular among those are Baroda By Cycle ( Heritage rides ) : Series of guided tours around the heritage parts of the city curated by Heritage experts. Food by Cycle ( Food exploration rides). Engagement Events for fitness, where the team organised activities for fitness enthusiasts at

Decathlon Store opening in Baroda & Delhi that had engaging games like pedal power, smart commute & cycling myth busters. They also do Corporate Cycle Ride with post ride discussions about increasing cycling culture in offices. One of the key initiatives by Cycling Cities for the underprivileged have been the ‘Gift a Cycle’ initiative, where people donated old cycles which were refurbished and given to underprivileged thus helping them in their daily commutes. Nikita’s efforts to make cycling more safer and acceptable and to promote cycling to help our cities become more sustainable, cleaner and healthier has been recognised both in India and worldwide. She is one among the 8 Cycling Mayors across the world and first one from India. The Bicycle Mayor & Leader Program, initiated by a Netherlands organization, Cyclespace is a global initiative to accelerate the progress of cycling in cities and help get another one billion people onto bikes. She was also selected by IIM Udaipur in 2016 for women entrepreneurship program and World Resource Institute as New Mobility Start-up for Accelerator Program In her role as the Bicycling Mayor of Baroda Nikita plans to integrate every aspect of the society that can use the cycle as a source of commute, health and wellbeing. She is aggressively trying to get both the corporate & and the government sector to encourage their employees to start using bicycles as a mode of commute. She is also engaging with schools and colleges and trying to get more youngsters into the fold. They are also building a unique Online Cycling Ecosystem where
one can connect with other Cyclists, Cycle shops and repair centres, cycling experts and cycling clubs in major cities across India. Some of the initiatives planned in the next phase are: 1. Partnering with school to have Cycling as part of the Curriculum, from Kindergarten itself, to bring back the scenario where the parking space was filled with colourful cycles and not big buses and scooters and motorbikes. 2. Consulting College Campuses and townships to have cycles for movement inside campuses. 3. Encouraging the Corporate Offices to provide facilities like Shower-rooms and safe parking facilities and also giving appreciation and encouragement to their employees who commute to work, 4. Encouraging and facilitating hotels to have few cycles, as nothing can be beat the wandering in the city on two-wheels, exploring every corner of the city at our own pace. 5. Motivating Gyms and sports centres to incentivize and facilitate people in various ways to come on cycles which will suffice the initial cardio-activity and warm-up. Apart from these efforts, she is also trying to influence Municipal Corporations to have separate lanes in the selected areas of the cities followed by the online petitions to have proper infrastructure to make the cycling safer. Riding Young But Riding Tall The Delhi Juniors
W
e at Crank have been associated with many a riding clubs and groups, but the Junior Cyclists Delhi club caught our attention for a very unique feature - the age group and composition of the club is something we haven’t seen among the millennials, though it was common thing for kids growing up in the 80’s and 90’s. This young club is all about junior/young cyclist from Delhi-NCR who are passionate about cycling. They are a bunch of students studying in either school or college (and this is eligibility criteria for the group) who ride whenever they can. They try and ride daily during their vacations and on weekends in their regular school/college days. The rides are anything from a casual 20km going up to 200km sometime. It’s all decided by the group. “sometimes we are lazy so we go for leisure 20km ride and whenever we feel energetic we do endurance century rides. We are passionate about cycling as well as exploring the unexplored places. hence we do ride everywhere where as possible” says their founder Kamal Garg.
12
CRANK with ProCycle APRIL 15TH, 2018
The group currently has about 50 members and their aim is to expand as much as possible so that all the young riders across Delhi NCR can connect and grow with the gang. They even help beginners to learn the sport. The group bonds over rides and aims at making and braking new personal records. They just want to enjoy the pure thrill of the sport minus all the issues like safety, group politics etc. The Junior Cyclists Delhi club also participated in competitive events like Thaar, Challenge 250, Panipat 200, Pedal Delhi, MTB Shimla, The golden Triangle and are now gearing up for their summer riding schedules. If you are also a junior/young cyclist and want to ride with them, you can connect on their Facebook page. - https://www.facebook.com/groups/juniorcyclistsdelhi
The new “Disha” of Soul Bonding Disha Shrivastava
“
To be in your children’s memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today”, but what is more critical for urban parents today is ‘how’ they are investing their time effectively while managing their own busy schedules. Parents are busier than before and urban parenting is now on a cross roads to decide how we make our future generations see and experience life. Crank caught up with Disha Shrivastava, who is a business and CSR consultant by profession with a keen interest in Child psychology. She is currently pursuing a degree for becoming a child Counselor and life coach. Outside work she is an outdoor enthusiast and loves to explore on the bike, she is also a running enthusiast and a passionate dancer. Disha spoke about her outdoor excursions and her experiences
16
CRANK with ProCycle APRIL 15TH, 2018
of introducing outdoors to her boys and how she combines her passions and hobbies to create life experiences for them. For Disha cycling is as natural and rhythmic as her heartbeat. “Cycling comes to me as a breather, as a way of life. When I am on my bike, it is my complete meditative state. I am more of an explorer on the bike than a racer and enjoy meeting local people, eating the roadside food and experiencing the real local culture on my bike. Disha has now started taking her boys (12 & 8 Years old) to regular cycling trips around the city and also on cycling tours. “We are living in an era of technology where human interaction is limited only to few WhatsApp messages and emotions are in the form of emojis. Empathy, adjustment, ethical behavior, values, being resourceful, kindness and many other virtues which we want our children to
grow up with is taught either through extra classes, storybooks or YouTube videos. Where is the actual learning?” laments Disha. We are on a constant lookout for ways and means to stay connected to the roots and to have a “friendly connect” with our children.
unique bonding experience for the entire family. “We fought, argued, got miffed with each other but we still hugged each other at the end of the day and sang, “I love you, you love me, we are a great big family.“
Parents today need to differentiate between raising kids and taming them. If Parents want their kids to learn something new, they should let them unlearn first, let them stay untamed. Children are supposed to be free, unleashed, have a mind of their own; laughing, giggling, crying and above all be on their own.
Nature has its way to make you learn the toughest lessons of life, which no school and notebook will teach. Let us try to be good human beings and our children will follow our footsteps.” I believe that by the end of my life I’ll be delighted that I raised empathetic and good-human beings connected to their roots and not just one in many ‘the intelligent breed’.”
In her recent cycle tour, Tour De Chhattisgarh, Disha let her boys decide on whether to ride or not, how much distance to ride, ride after a fall or not, what to eat before the ride, set the alarm to get up in the morning, arrange the suitcase, make their friends. She feels this gave them a sense of responsibility and decisiveness and spared her a lot of trouble and fretting. In her experience this was a
Disha is now venturing them into mountain climbing as well. They take the boys regularly to Sahyadri ranges for small climbs and Siddhanth her 12 year old elder son is training to climb the Annapurna circuit with her in March.

Shivalik Signature New kid on the ultra cycling block
S
hivalik Signature is an Ultra Cycling Race to be held on 7th April 2018 in Chandigarh. The event is listed as one of the qualifiers for the world’s toughest bicycle race- Race Across America, RAAM, which runs from the west to east coast of USA. The event will see the riders cycling across the plains of Punjab and the Kandi region, which lies in the lower Shivalik Hills, of the Kamahi Devi circuit. Shivalik Signature is the first RAAM Qualifier to be held in Punjab and North India. This being the inaugural run, this year’s event will see a comparatively less challenging route in terms of elevation gain and therefore a good opportunity for many aspirants to qualify. For the participants who had to miss the first qualifier due to dates or extra cost of getting the team to location, their stay etc, now have a choice for a RAAM qualifier in their home turf. Every year the cost of doing RAAM QUALIFIER excluding the registration fees is increasing but participating in this qualifier one can freeze the rates of qualifier as well as can assure his/ her participation in actual RAAM 2019 & 20. We have some of the superheroes of the ultraraces, who have done India proud in the recent years, agreeing to be part of this mega event. Dr. Amit Samarth who finished RAAM in solo category last year will be participating in the race. Dr. Hitendra Mahajan, of the Mahajan Brothers duo, the first Indians to win the race in the ‘team of two category’ in 2015, also mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in ‘Mann Ki Baat ’ will be officiating in the race alongside S. Mohinder Singh Bharaj who was a key crew member for Mahajan brothers in 2015 RAAM and for Team Sahyadri in 2017 edition of Deccan Cliff-hanger. Lt.Col Srinivas Gokulnath, the first Indian to finish RAAM in solo category shared his experience at one of our Roadshows in Jalandhar on 18 February, 2018. The team has travelled the entire length and breadth of the country, from Jammu and Kashmir to Kochi, from Kolkata to Nashik to spread awareness about the format and the opportunities Ultra-racing provides both at national and international level. RXXX, the Race Director for Shivalik Signature said -“Pedal Hoga Toh Medal Hoga; for us Shivalik signature is the platform for the region to facilitate the best and deserving racers to be the leaders of change. We want to bring the awareness about racing and make people feel proud in getting associated with cycling and create an environment to successfully breed the culture of competitiveness resulting in more wins and accolades for our Indian athletes on the international platform. Brining the race to the region will also help increase interest and participation in road racing activities in the future and Punjab Tourism is

CRANK with ProCycle APRIL 15TH, 2018
all in to welcome new ambassadors of tourism to its heartland.” The idea of Ultra racing came to our mind in 2014, but there were many challenges at that time. While on a national level, Dr. Amit Samarth, Dr. Srinivas Gokulnath and Sahyadri Cyclists who finished the RAAM and made history, Punjab was still struggling to have a good cycling community in the first place. Cycling fraternity was almost non-existent in Punjab when compared to other states. This inspired us to organize a reputed ultra-racing event and promote cycling. We started by creating small groups of riders and started riding distances, then we bought Brevets to Punjab with an objective to promote long distance cycling and tourism. After three years of relentless hard work we have been able to enhance the level of ultra-racing in Punjab. Thus, Shivalik Signature, a 615 kms Ultra race was a natural extension of our efforts. The event is being supported and sponsored by ENERZAL, FOOD TRAILS INDIA, MOBYCY, AMRITSAR WALKS, RED BULL, WILD WATER.

Travel, Tourism & Triathlon The Ahemdabad Triathlon 2018
A
hmedabad Triathlon Event was an overwhelming success and marks another big milestone in developing the Triathlon community in that region. While the Delhi Triathlon saw itself mature into an event where athletes came from both serious and fun motives, this year also saw the launch and first edition of Gandhinagar- Ahmedabad Triathlon. The unique feature of this event was that it was one of its kind SportTourism event where Gujarat Tourism was a key sponsor with the aim to give a wholistic experience to both the participants and their crew & family. Ahmedabad, which is now the first city in India to be declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO playing the host there was a great

opportunity for the participants, crew and the organisers to cool their heels after the event and explore the rich culture, heritage and cuisine of the 606-year-old city. The surrounding POLO Forest, an abode to three ancient temples (Shiva Temple, Sun Temple, and the Jain Temple), a dam, man-made waterfalls, exotic wildlife, and an abundance of natural beauty makes for a quick getaway. The place also serves for a great place to train for climbs on bicycles. Another quick getaway is the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary - a bird sanctuary just 64 km to the west of Ahmedabad. Undoubtedly, a heaven for ornithologists and nature lovers, dotted with some luxurious resorts for the ones wanting to engage in some luxury. One can easily spot the black-tailed godwit, rosy pelicans, white storks and numerous other migratory birds , that come flying thousands of
kilometres to take refuge in these wetlands. The lake harbours a variety of plants and animals too. A little further is the famous Little Rann of Kutch India’s answer to the salt flats of Utah. A salt marsh located in Kutch district, the Little desert of Kutch is home to the Indian Wild Ass (Khur) in addition to the Indian Wolf, desert fox, and nilgai. It is yet another abode for wildlife and local and migratory water birds in Gujarat. The place finds frequent mention in Salman Rushdie’s Booker of Booker Prizewinning novel ‘Midnight’s Children’. With so much on offer the place is surely on its way to become a popular destination for sportstourism. The event was held on 18th February, 2018 at Sports Authority of India Complex in Gandhinagar. There was an expo of leading bike brands, nutrition brands, triathlon equipment suppliers etc. open for all on 17th February, 2018 at Karnavati Club, SG Highway, Ahmedabad as a run up to the main event. The first edition saw 124 athletes took part, out of which around 50-60 were from out
of Gujarat and the organisers are hoping to see a larger contingent from other states in its next edition. There were three race categories -Sprint- Individual (750 mtrs swimming, 20 Kms cycling, 5kms running), Olympic -Individual and Team Relay(1500 mtrs swimming, 40 kms cycling, 10 kms running), Half Iron -Individual and Team Relay(1900 mtrs swimming, 90 kms cycling 21.1 kms running). Gujarat Tourism was the official tourism partner and host state for this triathlon. Gujarat is a state known for its rich history, its delectable cuisine, wildlife and marine parks, the Asiatic Lion, rich cultural heritage, textiles in the form of bandhani and patola . Apart from that, the state is also known for its safety, especially being the safest state for women travellers. Ms. Khyati Nayak, PRO, Head - Film Facilitation Cell, Medical and Wellness Tourism, Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd. Said “events like these give a reason to the family of the participant to travel for the event. Triathlon, when combined with a venue like Gujarat gives ample opportunities to the athletes to take part in the event and thereafter relax with family at one of the various beautiful locations that Gujarat has to offer. A new concept of sports tourism shall be developed due to this event and we look forward to having more and more participants with each passing year. The participants are invited with their families and visit places in Gujarat in the week after the event. We guarantee memories to cherish for a lifetime in Gujarat.”

Ingit Anand, two times Ironman finisher, Ironman Coach and podium winner at various triathlons in India was the race director for this event. He had taken great pains to ensure that the participants were able to have an international level event experience laced with the famous Gujrati hospitality. He believes that this triathlon is going to be the signature triathlon event across India due to the lush green route, zero pollution atmosphere, minimal Traffic and partly and Smooth roads, Comfortable temperatures and Loads of Goodies just like in any international event – gym bag, transition bags, towel, jersey, medal, protein shake with blender, free sippers, energy drinks etc. Ingit ensured that every minute detail was chalked and followed and also was environment friendly apart from providing a world class experience. The bike route hydration was provided in a sipper instead of plastic bottle so that the participants can carry it home as a souvenir. The trashed bike bottles were returned back to the participants. There was a specially designed finisher towel apart from the attractive race medal and a unique triathlon photo frame. the Transition arrangements and finisher gate were comparable to any international triathlon. Anuj Sharedalal and Yagnesh Ahir, both national level cyclists, who were part of the organizing team added “We had organized Tour of Aravallis in Rajasthan in the past with immense success and participation from abroad which has now become a signature tour in western India. We plan to create a name for this triathlon in the same manner.” The appreciation from the participants were the testimony to the vision of the organisers. Vinay Asrani, triathlon coach and winner of half iron triathlon (male) said, “Hugely impressive professionalism in organisation of

a triathlon event with every minute detail in place and at par with the ironman events never seen before. I am a big fan of organizers amdavad crankmeisters.” Shaily Chauhan, another participant and podium winner in Olympic category (female), says “I am super happy and super proud of you guys, having high standards of taste in everything , whether it was a sipper quality or a t shirt or a medal or a medal ribbon, it was quite evident that quality was something which was not compromised, being thoughtful to arrange pickup drop service for outsiders, bringing unique ideas in the event, giving the best red carpet finish line experience to all participants; what a debut event, what more one can ask for in first ever triathlon edition! Team AC has benchmarked a local race giving an international race experience! Cheers!” The icing on the cake was the fantastic feedback from Deepak Raj, the ace coach founder of Yoska “The event was an extremely well organised event with usage of multiple pools to ensure seamless co-ordination of start and execution of multiple race categories. The race course was well designed, well thought out and excellent roads with key focus of safety and experience of the race participants. Yoska has been proud to have been associated as an Adviser and Training Partner with the Ahmedabad Triathlon Event with the Yoska Coaches (Ingit and Yagnesh) leading the way and Yoska trainees such as Anuj Sharedalal and others playing a significant role.” It looks like there was a lot of flavour in the event, and to top it up, it was in such a scenic and beautiful state of Gujarat. One should definitely try to attend this event next year! Photo credits - Gujarat Tourism
