is a perfect setting for travelers seeking a sense of adventure. The high mountain passes, the vast stretches of barren desert untouched by human contamination is an adventure travellers’ paradise.

SPITI Valley, literally the “middle land” between India and Tibet, is one of the least populated regions of India. The remoteness of the place and the harshness of the terrain

You could keep an eye for breathtaking views of the Ki Monastery and Tabo Monastery, the oldest monasteries in the world which is the seat of Buddhist culture,

the Rohtang pass (13,500 feet above msl) that separates Lahul and Spiti from the Kulu valley and the Kunzum pass (15,000 feet above msl) that separates Lahul and Spiti from the Pin Valley and is home to the Buchen Lama This is one rustic tour all MTB riders should look forward to

Hero Launches Lectro

L

ectro is the 1st in a series of Hero’s European brands to be launched in India; Set to Revolutionize the Electric Pedal Assisted Cycles Market. The countries largest bicycle manufacturer Hero Cycles has ushered in a new era in the Indian bicycle industry with the launch of its new brand offering Lectro that promises to revolutionize the Electric Pedal assisted cycles (EPAC) segment in India. Lectro marks the first in a series of Hero’s European brand launches in Indian market.

in Germany in September and a very encouraging response. The same was repeated in a limited test launch in New Delhi

With this new launch, Hero has taken the lead in the nascent EPAC category. The Brand, with 4 product offerings was launched in Hyderabad. Over the next few months, Hero Cycles will expand the offerings within Lectro from the current 4 products to as many as 20 in the EPAC category.

base. However, this segment has a huge growth potential in the country as social consciousness grows about the need for reducing use of fossil fuel fired automobiles and turning to greener modes of transport. Lectro was designed and developed for the European market where EPAC’s are a major draw, with a consistent growth of over 25%. In India, Hero has taken the lead to build and create this category. With Lectro, we are aiming at bringing about a shift in the consumer behavior and give a boost to the EPAC segment,” said Mr Pankaj Munjal, Chairman and Managing Director of Hero Cycles.

“In many countries across Europe, a shift to cycling culture has helped radically bring down carbon emissions, and EPAC’s have played a prominent role in this. Cycling is one of the best cardio exercises for people of all age groups. It is one of the best exercises for good heart health, for controlling weight and for increasing the longevity and health of the bones. It is not just a healthy way of commuting; it is also a highly environmental friendly mode of transport, especially suited to the needs of highly polluted urban centres. With EPAC, cycling for longer distances becomes highly viable and this can induce automobile users to turn to cycling in their daily lives,” added Mr. Munjal.

“EPAC is a nascent segment in the Indian bicycle market and has only recently started to gain attention among a select consumer

Hero owned Lectro was first launched in Birmingham last year and was successfully showcased at the Eurobike 2016 held

CRANK wishes the best to Hero and Lectro and eagerly looks forward to the EPAC revolution

BBCh CRIT 2017

T

he Bangalore bicycle championship a CRANK partnership calendar progresses and this time it was the criterium at a brand new location closer to Devanahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru. It was a pleasant Sunday morning and as is the characteristic of this race the 130 participants across the 5 categories their friends and family gave it a carnival like feel. Since CRIT happens in an enclosed loop of road, it is great for audience particiaption as they can go around the course as the riders keep passing them. This year there was a substantial kids particpation. BBCh loves to encourage them and even this time there was special category for them not really a competetive segmet but just a group ride to encourage future ridrers

exclusive podium. It was expected with two national level cyclists in him and Arvind Panwar. The masters saw team Spectrums Craig lead all the way in a less populated field, but the sparse particpation takes nothing away from our man whose standards scare even the elites. Samira Abraham took it way (quite literally in case of criterium) in the womens. The amatuers category with the max partcipation had the excitement of a prime lap prize that put many a strategies to test. Izak Spies the wiry South African was the first man rolling into the podium The next is the DH race and if you guys are following BBCh closely go to their website bbch.in and it will help you keep updated. Alternatively we at CRANK keep all the bbch news in any case

BBCh is fuelled by the cycling community of Bangalore and run by a set of volunteers. Continuing in the same spirit this CRIT course was discovered by Sunil N and curated by Naveen John Bangalores very own pro rider which offered an added technical and competitive edge The CRIT is all about crowd, crashes and corners and even this race saw all that and more. The track was flat but many curves some almost 90 degree meant keeping the lines on curve was critical especailly during breakaways The elite segment where team CICLO was an obvious favorite with Navin John mentoring and leading the others predicatably devoured the rest of the groups and ended with an

medical aid, on tour support stations and to and fro bike transfer and transportation from Ahmedabad There are going to be competitive sections each day but the easy riders can relax and ride. Riding and finishing is a reward you shall enjoy in itself And at the end beautiful cool off party to bond and reminisce and look for another season and of course to crown the winners CRANK is partnering the event since inception year and we are convinced looking at the commitment that it may become one of the best tours on the Indian tour calendar.

Day 1 Kumbhalgarh to Ranakpur and back to Kumbhalgarh: (D 120 Kms, E+1563, -1563) One can’t ask for more than beginning a tour at a world heritage site and the world’s second largest fort wall. The day starts with a good decent and crosses some high gradient climbs

Day 2 Kumbhalgarh to Abu Road (D 170 Kms, E +1239, -1497) A long day that is sure to test your endurance. Keep your eyes on the road and also around to experience nature at its best and to spot some of the wild life if you are lucky

Day 3 Abu Road to Gurushikhar to Mount Abu – (D 70 Kms E+1671, -763) This is the day for your lungs and heart. Guru Shikhar is the highest peak of Aravalli range and a classified climb. You can aim to be the king or the queen of the climb and get that polka

CRANK caught up with a participant of the first edition Mark Handriks from Holland. “I knew it was going to be great time, but this was way beyond expectations. One of the most memorable time I have spent during these 4 days thanks to Vinod and team TOA” he said We asked Vinod Purohit to tell us about The Cyclone Cycling Club, Ahmedabad, Gujarat that manages the event. “The club is an organisation of like-minded, passionate cycling enthusiasts, who have come together to promote the cause of cycling. Based in Ahmedabad, it is amongst the biggest cyclist communities of India with chapters in various Indian cities and also is the umbrella organisation for Ahmedabad Randonneurs” he told us We congratulated him for putting the Aravallis on the cycling map of the country

Those Doctors & their two wheeled machines Passion...Profession and the twain SHALL meet!

Is it a strange coincidence that we find accomplished Doctors conspicuous in the riding community in most cities of the country? It almost seems that Doctors are making the wheels go around. Why? And what makes them tick? Is it the congruence of objective with their profession, which is general wellness? Or is it that common strain of service and passion? Or precision focus perhaps? We don’t know but we are happy. Who better than Doctors to promote our cause…they are perhaps the best inspirational role models for all to get on to the saddle. CRANK met a few to get an insight into their drive. And we found, fun guys they are all! Not the serious, staring – above – their - spectacle – rim types at all…come let’s meet them you’ll like them instantly Dr. Arvind Bhateja (Bangalore) ‘Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction’, Rumi.

Being every bit an athlete since his childhood, Dr.Bhatija began training and racing systematically. His journey on wheels is virtually a roster of exploits “I raced locally to start with and then went international. Giro di Dolomiti in 2015, Tour of Friendship 2016, Masters Tour of Chiang Mai 2016, Tour de Bintan in 2017 and recently the Tour of Friendship Thailand. A few BBCh podiums came along the way, TTT, Gunjur circuit race, BBCh road race within months of a back surgery and the ITT” Phew that’s quite a list Doc! His approach to passion and profession are perhaps similar. Methodical, systematic, with intelligent planning, precise execution and with a view to satiating the soul. His training is planned and systematic. Weekdays are indoors on a smart trainer (Tacx Neo) and Zwift. Coach prescribed workouts on training peaks and three to four workouts and then the weekends are usually hard and long to get him ready for races. He prefers the Nandi group ride on Saturdays and a South Bangalore ride on Sunday through rolling terrain Dr. Bhateja is the founder of Spectrum Racing. “It was born out of an idea to be competitive but yet have fun. Initially we were 4 but now we are a large family of 20. We meet, ride, race and have fun and call ourselves an eating team with a racing problem! Our members Vicki and Craig recently did us proud by qualifying for the world masters finals. We are even mentoring an under 18 rider as a part of our talent development effort. Spectrum is absolutely the best thing about my cycling.”

A renowned Neuro-Surgeon and the boss at the Specialty Sita Bhatija Hospital, Dr. Bhatija’s tryst with cycling began soon after he decided to start training for a half marathon in 2010 but injured his knee. Not the one to be overcome by circumstance he shifted focus to cycling and went from an MTB to road bike in about 2 months and did 1000 KM Tour of Nilgiris the same year. And before the year ended he had heard that passion call from within for cycling

14

CRANK with ProCycle JULY 15TH, 2017

Doctor Bhateja has been a source of inspiration for many, but especially for his son Vivek. Vivek inspired by his father took to cycling to lose weight. He has lost over 50 Kgs since and has normalized his high BP and pre diabetic state. Today Vivek is a passionate rider himself and is aiming for his own list of achievements – just like Dad!

Ironman Deepak Raj

Dr. Ali Poonawala (Bangalore) is a urological surgeon and a much-recognized face in the riding community and likes to be called a no-frill-Cyclist. He has been cycling since his childhood in Pune, a city that which had an erstwhile sobriquet of “cycling city” Dr. Poonawala is in the true sense a Doctor on Wheels and has been commuting on a bike since 2011 to various city hospitals offering his services to his patients. In 2013 he rode to Pune over four days and all of 850 KM’s to attend the Urological Society of India’s annual conference there. He used this ride to raisefunds for charities supporting alternate community living, needy patients and for the not so privileged destitute of Mumbai Dr. Poonawala is a conscientious cyclist and follows the principle of “pay it forward” in return for all the enjoyment he derives out of cycling. He is actively involved with the Bangalore Bicycling School, in teaching adults to ride. The school provides cycles and does not charge a fee. All one has to do is to turn up at Cubbon Park on a Sunday morning. “This is our Gurudakshina to cycling, which has transformed our lives”, says the Doc

Dr. Vignan Rachabattuni (Hyderabad)has been cycling since he was 24. In his early internship days he would cycle primarily to improve his endurance. Over a period of time he built his game around endurance and then went for Half Ironman Vietnam and Putrajaya. He has achieved podiums in local races, done brevets and participated in National games for triathlon Dr. Vignan is a part owner of Dr. Fitness, a fitness center and clinic for triathletes and other athletes. The center also helps with sport injuries and conducts training sessions for tri athletes “I think doctors are better at sports or triathlon because we have a better understanding of muscle physiology. We are able to pick up signals of fatigue quicker and are able to exercise to optimum limit with an ideal recovery plan. I guess it’s all about the knowledge. Doctors are generally more aware of their bodies which helps them maintain the fine balance between a rigorous passion and profession”

In line with his no frills credo the good Doctors fleet consists of a BSA Ladybird, the children’s gift to their mom and now used now for teaching ladies, a BSA Mach 1 his son’s school bike and his erstwhile favorite for long rides, a Raleigh Mybike, his new city commute, a Btwin Sport1 and the Peerless foldie Dr. Poonawala advises the ‘Cow Principle’ for urban commuters. “A cow is the best example to follow. Never rush or waverand serenely move on and let the traffic meanders around you! To be consistent and steady in traffic is the key to safe commuting” “As a cyclist treat everyone on the road with empathy. Don’t carry that superior halo of being an environment protector. You never know the other guy may be doing more for the environment, but differently! Enjoy your ride but do not be a prig”

Dr.Vignan owns four cycles, which he uses for different purposes. His alloy Bianchi is for roughing it out while the Specialized Roubaix is for daily riding. The carbon aero Merida Reacto 5000 is reserved for racing which has amodified headset to make it a TT bike. The Bergamont Vitox is a recent acquisition reserved for trails or for days when he just wants to ride without thinking too much about the road Dr.Vignan sees a promising future for the cycling community, “cycling has become a lot of fun. When I first started cycling, there were hardly any races happening in India. Today the racing scene is big. Brevets have become routine in almost every major city of India. Also, people are using cycles more to commute to work. The racing scene has also grown considerably as many Indian cyclists are now traveling out of India to race”

Dr. Amit Samarth (Nagpur) We are all waiting with bated breath for Dr.Samarths upcoming exploit at the RAAM. Having crewed for Seana Hogan the ultra-cycling legend in 2016 RAAM we feel he has the experience. Currently on a grueling 360 training that includes a weekly schedule 1500 kms of cycling, 70 kms of running and 20 kms of swimming, strength training, yoga, and meditation we feel he has fair chance and at CRANK are rooting for him to get that first solo podium position from India. Dr Samarth lives and breathes fitness, health and sports. Apart from being an endurance athlete he is a Doctor (M.B.B.S) and has a Master’s Degree in Public Health. A doctor by profession he wants to make a mark in the domain of fitness through his venture ProHEALTH foundation. His goal is for an active India and to convey the message about the essence of fitness and health in life. The foundation provides necessary educational aids and equipment and establishes infrastructure to facilitate and support healthy lifestyles. It also identifies athletes and manages sporting talent across Tier 2 & 3 cities. Doctor Samarth has completed 10 long and short distance Triathlon and more than 100 half and full marathons and is a SCOTT sports supported athelete “My objective is to promote sports and active lifestyle and inspire people of my country to give more priority to sports. In future, I want to establish the School of Endurance Sports in Nagpur to develop national and international level athletes in endurance sports like cycling, running and triathlon”says Dr. Amit Samarth. We at CRANK wish him all the luck

Dr. Chiro Mitra (Delhi) is a Veterinary Surgeon and got on the saddle as a part of a rehab that he went through while recovering from a bad road crash in the US in 2005. He was bed ridden for four months and cycling helped him come back stronger to his profession. Since then it has become his passion and Dr. Mitra has clocked over 50,000 KM on his wheels. He has cycled high altitude terrain from Manali to Leh twice and has completed 3 SR series and has cycled extensively in Europe and America Cycling as a rehab made him a “believer”.“I am Veterinary surgeon by profession and got back to India after living for 15 years in the US. Initially I would hardly see other recreational riders on the roads but now it seems cycling has emerged as the new Golf.” And Dr. Mitra has done his bit to bring about this transformation. He started the Delhi Randonneurs, which has grown from 2 to 2500 members and is the founder organizer of the Delhi triathlon and many of Delhis Brevets “I have had most exciting 9 years of my life since I began cycling’ Mine used to the first all Carbon bike in Gurgaon in 2010 and now I am happy to see so many. I wish our tribe keeps increasing” And Dr. Mitras services to cycling have not gone unnoticed. He has also been awarded the Karamveer Puraskar twice for promoting social causes through cycling

The Bergamont Revox 4.0

O

n a weekend the CRANK test riders put the newly received Bergamont Revox 4.0 through the shred test. The Bergamont Revox 4.0 is a cross-country 29er Hardtail MTB. We tested the entry-level version but that was enough to get a feel for the frame and geometry The bike feels light and accelerates very well on the climbs making it a Mountain Goat. It has a sturdy frame, which has 6061 Aluminium Alloy Double-Butted tubing making it strong on the descents. The frame angles are precisely dialed in to make it faster. It can surely help amateurs taste the podiums. It comes with internal cabling, which makes the frame look neat and clean The Bike is fitted with a Coil Spring Suntour XCM HLO 80/100mm Fork which makes sure those hard bumps on the trails are absorbed by the suspension and not by the rider. It also comes with a lockout mechanism, which makes it very efficient for the rider to toggle the switch for suspension. We put the bike through some pretty devilish terrain and it treated our testers well The Revox is equipped with a Shimano Altus 8-speed Derailleur and an entry level Shimano Tourney 3-speed front derailleur, the Drivetrain doesn’t get as smooth as the higher models of Shimano

Vintage Treat in Pune

F

or all the cycling enthusiasts who also have a keen interest in history, a visit to Vikram Pendse’s Cycle museum in Pune should be mandatory. Opened to public in May 2017, the museum has a collection of more than 150 vintage cycles chronicling the development over the last 100 years. The variations in material, metallurgy, gear, hubs, fork, accessories and development in design is stimulating to watch in this unique space Mr. Pandurang Gaikwad a veteran cyclist who has competed in state, national and international meets has restored all the bicycles in this collection to working order. He has a record number of thirteen appearances in the marquee Mumbai Pune road race himself A BSA Paratrooper bicycle, used during the Second World War, caught Vikrams attention in 1995 and that kick started his unique journey of collecting other interesting models. Along with bicycles came various accessories and components. Soon intriguing tricycles and pedal cars joined the bicycles!

The idea of opening the Museum was a necessity as the collection was filling up every available space at home. “The museum has turned out be a great opportunity to connect with the past” Vikram has a collection of unique bicycles, tricycles, tandem, racer & cruisersfrom all over the world, which are examples of craftsmanship, elegance and functionality. “‘The versatility of the design and mechanism really hooked me. The bicycle is one of the most uncompromising constructions, artistically and structurally. The experimental and innovative elements of a bicycle are as important as who has ridden them and what roles in history they have played” The layout of the museum interestingly curated by Anil Gujar weaves through 100 years and gives a period feel. He has designed the unique display interweaving many objects of different types and from different cultures across this timeline. You will like the professional approach to research and display done in the museum by the team of Minaal Karekar, Swapna Pataskar, Mayur Pramod Pataskar and Rohan Sable Each display has a QR code that directly links the browser to the web content. You could spend a lazy few hours browsing through if you have some time while in Pune

CRANK showcases some models we foundas most unique in the collection

The 1914 Golden Sunbeam This 28” Gentleman’s Bicycle with three Speed (Hub Gear) is the oldest cycle in the museums collection. This cycle is in original conditionwith original paint, decals and parts. It has not been restored but it is in a working condition. The Sunbeams were made in Wolver Hampton from 1887 to 1937. The company adopted a version of Harrison Carter’s little oil-bath chain case in the mid-1890s. The cycle was re-designed so that the oil contained in the oil bath lubricated the bottom bracket, chain and rear hub, the only cycle so designed to date. It was designed to last a gentleman a lifetime. The top model was the “Golden”, with alloy wheel-rims, Epi cyclic two- and three-speed gears and real gold-leaf pin striping

The BSA Paratrooper The Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited (BSA) was a major Britishindustrial combine. At its peak BSA (which also owned Triumph) was the largest motorcycle producer in the world.

The American Cycloskiff This is a peculiar cycle for kids. This was probably first designed in Switzerland and can be used by children who do not have strength in their legs or by toddlers as the cycle does not have pedals The child has to move a power rod with both hands. This force bar was relatively long, so you could put a lot of force on the bar. The vehicle was controlled with the feet, which were held on an extended axle at the front wheel. On moving the bars a rowing action is created and the Cycloskiff moves forward! BSA manufactured a range of bicycles from utility roadsters to racing bicycles and produced bicycles for both the police and military and notably afolding bicycle for the British Army during World War II [the famous folding Paratroopers). BSA supplied theIrish Army with these bicycles after 1922.These cycles fold in half and had an attachment, which could be attached to the parachute. The soldiers would jump off the plane with these cycles on their back. On landing on the ground the soldiers could pedal their way faster. This is the bicycle, which sparked an interest in Vikram Pendse to start collecting bicycles

The one in the collection had decals with the marking American Cycloskiff, The original was produced in Nyon VD, called “CycloSkiff” and was available in bright red or blue, with a yellow or blue plastic saddle and was produced from 1950 to 1960. In French it was called Cyclorameur, which means rowing races. This was probably because you had to make rowing motions for driving the Cycloskiff.

James Adult Tricycle James Cycle Co was founded sometime around 1875,but the postwar head-badge they used on their tricycles still proclaimed ‘Famous for over Fifty Years’ suggesting that they had coined this slogan in the early 1930s.Their main tricycle model was the ‘Superlux’ which had a lady’s loopframe. They also made some larger gent’s tricycles with a crossbar. The model with twin down tubes was a unisex model. This was popular amongst the wealthy people of the time. We have photos of ‘Sardar’s’ or kingsmen driving the tricycle and an usher holding an umbrella over his sire’s head as he drove and running behind the tricycle.

Peugeot This was one of the most popular racing cycle brands in France. The museum collection has a 27”/1/4” frame. It has narrow rims which help in creating lesser friction and attaining greater speed. This particular model was very popular in the Tour de France and was also used in the Olympics This cycle was procured from an old lady ho was keen not to get it back! It had returned earlier as the new owners could not the right tire’s, which made her wary and Vikram was only glad to reassure her

Not just Astanga, Dasara & Mysuru Pak Wheel culture in the culture capital

M

ysuru, the culture capital of Karnataka with its magnificent palace and beautiful gardens is now singing a different tune or should we say spinning a different wheel. The city is witnessing the rise of a new culture, something that’s making its denizens healthier and the environment cleaner. The city is falling in love with two wheels and the pedal And its not a passing fad, with a number of stores selling the best in class equipment and groups and clubs getting formed, the city is on the fringe of a major cycle revolution. Be it for commute or as an initiative to reduce fuel consumption or just to stay fit, Mysoreans are answering the call of the cycle with élan The rise of cycling has given rise to cycling communities with varying tastes. Some exploring new trails in the lush green forests around the city and others ridng up their favourite Chamundi hills. The trails in the hills sorrounding the city and roadies racing along the Ring Road is a common sight. Many of the city riders are competetive cyclists who have achieved colors on the amateur circuits and completed brevets Not just competitive cycling, Mysuru is perhaps the first city with an organized public bike share program “TrinTrin” operated by Green Wheel Ride, a local enterprise engaged in manufacturing ecofriendly battery-operated bicycles The Mysore Cycling Club and the Mysore District Cycling association are the two registered cycling clubs in the city with a growing membership. The club organizes brevets and amatuer championships routinely and helps the community grow There are many bike stores in the city that whet the apetite of the city riders and provide the best retail experience. CRANK caught up with one such store Cyclopedia run by the elite cycling couple, Lokesh Narasimhachar and his wife Fariyal Jamadar. The store adds to the cycling culture of the city by organising multi stage rides. Sufferest is their signature rides conducted every year and which includes the brutal kalahatti climb upto Ooty and that gives the locals a taste of competetion

The expat population of the city, most who are visitors come to learn Yoga at the many ashrams are often seen on their bikes and give that cosmopolitan International flavor to the city. One such interesting personality is Mark Flynt a Yoga afficianado who has started a venture engaged in the manufacture of pollution masks for riders The government and the local governing bodies are also supportive of cycling in the city. The public bike share is in fact a state government of Karnataka project, partially funded by the World Bank under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant. The project is planned and implemented by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport and Mysuru City Corporation and maintains 52 hubs and 450 bicycles to ride across the town from conveniently located docking stations So when in Mysuru next get that cultrure fix around time on two wheels…and don’t forget to dig into that yummy ghee oozing Mysuru Pak… and don’t worry you will burn all the fat before you know it… on your bike….

Power Up with a Power Meter

O

ne of the first upgrades a cyclist usually looks for when he goes up the pro ladder or moving onlt the competetive circuit is a power meter. A power meter is a device attached to your bike which measures your power output. There are different types of power meters in the market today and its an amazing piece of technology that you could buy. Its also exoensive gadgetery that may set you back by some number but a must have if you are willing to sacrifice There are broadly five places on yoour bike where the power meters can be fixed: • Rear Wheel Hub • Crank Spider • Crank Arm • Pedals • Bottom Bracket There are many brands available in the market for each of the above types. The Rear Wheel Hub Type simply replaces the hub of your rear wheel. One of its key advantages is that it doesn’t interfere with the drivetrain in any way. If you’re someone who doesn’t change wheel sets very often, this can be a good option for you. Another good thing about it is that when you’re coasting and not pedalling it knows and goes to zero automatically. This improves the accuracy significantly. The PowerTap G3 and GS Hubs are good examples Crank Spider type of power meters which as the name suggests are built into the crank’s spider are mostly used by riders in pro pelotons. It gives you complete power and can be used if you’re planning for structured power training. It’s also more expensive than other types, so only go for it if you’ve really made up your mind. SRM, Quarq, PowerTap C1, Power2Max, Team Zwatt Zpider are dependable ones The Crank Arm type of power meters which are usually single-sided ones. only measure your power from one of the legs (mostly left leg on the non drive side) and for total power, the number is doubled. It’s one of the cheapest power meters though it might not be the most accurate one as there is always power imbalance in both the

legs. There resaonbale ones from Stages Power, Rotor INpower2, Pioneer LT, 4iiii, Team Zwatt Zimanox, WatTeam. Then there are the Pedal type power meters, which simply replace your pedals. These are very easy to install and has ease of use. You can change as many bikes you want or wheel sets you want. It obviously measures power from both legs and does not interfere with the drivetrain in any way. It comes only for limited pedal systems and has no options for MTBs as yet And finally, the Bottom Bracket types simply replace your bottom bracket. An additional advantage of them is that they’re able to measure stroke metrics as well. But they’re compatible with limited crank sets only. Also, it’s not recommended if you switch bikes very often, as you will need to switch the unit too. Examples: Rotor INpower, Ashton Instruments, Team Zwatt Zpindle, Dyno Velo. At the end of the day, there is no right answer to what power meter is the best. It depends on every individual’s style, preferences and requirements. Based on the above pros and cons one should first narrow down which type suits them and then go on to choose from the brands available. The market is still new and growing constantly, so there will be price drops. It’s not just a fancy upgrade to have, but a necessary one if you’re serious about training right and becoming competitive – contributed by Mayank Tripathi
