Sophia C games. Sophia used adventurous vocabulary and wrote with lovely emotion.

Eco & Gardening Club

Hurrah! The lighter afternoons meant that we were able to plant some seeds in the raised beds. This week the girls planted radish and spinach seeds after they weeded and dug the soil. The recent rain had loosened the soil which made this part much easier.

Ash Wednesday

We were delighted to welcome Steve MUrray, a Christian mime artist from Behold Ministry to St Teresa's to mark the beginning of Lent. Steve led workshops throughout the day, teaching the girls the basics of mime artistry. He then led a very beautiful and moving reflection as part of our Ash Wednesday service.

Musicians of the Week

Year 3 – Lucy A for learning our new songs so quickly and singing with such enthusiasm.

Year 4 – Calista J D for her excellent focus and wonderful playing from a score. Well done!

Year 5 – Isabella C for always trying her best and for her excellent singing this week.

Year 6

Year 6 have been practicing hard over half term learning audition pieces for their production of Mary Poppins and performed them this week.

Mrs Harris is very proud of you all – you gave some amazing performances!

Rock Choir

Year 5 & 6 had a great time rocking out this Tuesday at our new Choir – even Mrs Irons came to have a sing! All are very welcome on Tuesday lunchtime at 12.45 in the Music Room.

Music Lessons & Instrument Hire

Easter Music Course 2023!

This year’s course will take place from Tuesday 11th to Friday 14th April. The course is open to girls and boys from all schools in Years 3 - 6 who have passed Grade 1 on their instrument.

Sport News

Netball

The U9 teams played against Reigate St Mary on the Friday before half term. All our teams played well and demonstrated great teamwork throughout their match. Well done to the C team for winning their game, the score was 14-3! Players of the matches were Zara, Arabella and Eliza. Well done to the U10 teams that played against Felton Fleet on Tuesday afternoon, there was some fantastic netball throughout and the girls showed excellent teamwork. Three teams won and one team lost by one goal! Well done to all the girls who took part, the POM’s were Harriet, Francesca, Sophia C and Flori.

Hockey

St Teresa’s rocked up to the U11 Surrey tournament full of confidence and raring to go. Our first game was against Tormead and, unlike previous tournaments, we came out of the blocks fast and put 3 goals past them. We started to get our press set up in the right positions and with some quick counter attack play we were able to play through the Tormead defence and push the ball hard into the corners of the goal.

Our next game was against St George’s. Unfortunately, we didn’t start as quickly as in our first match and we found ourselves 2 goals down early on in the game. However, we slowly started to get back into the game and we scored a great goal right on the whistle for half time to make it 2-1. The second half was the best half of hockey this team have played all season. St George’s kept launching their attacks but Kaiah, Evie and Olivia were excellent in the press. Peyton and Tabitha were very solid in defence and Ella had a great game in goal and as a result, St George’s couldn’t find their way through us. We stayed in the game right up until the last minute, in which Kaiah had a small chance and hit the post. It was a great performance against a team who went on to win the tournament.

The third game against Rowan was the match that mattered as it determined whether we went into the semi finals or competed for 5th place. Rowan had a couple of very skilful forwards and the match was back and forth the whole way. We found ourselves 2-1 down with a couple of minutes left and eventually we won a short corner, which Peyton powerfully slapped into the goal. This ended up being the final score which meant that our fate lay on the goals scored in the Rowan vs Tormead match and unfortunately Rowan proceeded to the semi finals on goal difference.

The next two games against Hoe Bridge and City of London Freemen’s were brilliant games to watch. The team kept on playing good hockey and passed the ball around the pitch nicely. Liliana and Steffi continued to play well defensively and Nicci was very unselfish in front of goal, setting up a couple of tap ins for Olivia. Both games were wins, finishing 5-0 and 2-0 respectively which meant that we finished 5th in the tournament overall. The team should take great pride in only losing 2-1 to St George’s and in drawing to Rowan, who went on to finish 2nd. Some of the hockey played was excellent and it is great to see the team improving with every tournament they play.

This Week

This week we marked the beginning of the Church’s season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday Services. The forty days of Lent remind us of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for his final journey to Jerusalem where he would face his condemnation and arrest.

During this season we are call the engage in the three great practices of Lent - to pray, to fast, and to give to others.

Prayer is perhaps both the easiest and the hardest. You can pray at any time, in any place, using whatever words are most natural to you. Yet is also requires both discipline and, perhaps most importantly, honesty. God, our loving father, knows us better than we know ourselves, so prayer isn’t intended to change God. Instead, by spending time in the presence of God, sharing our hopes and desires with him, we find our will being shaped by God’s loving plan for us.

Fasting, or ‘giving things up’ is often where people start their Lenten observance. Many of us start with those familiar themes of giving up treats like chocolate, sweets and cake. This isn’t a bad place to start, but don’t stop there. The main idea is that we fast from those things that keep us away from God. So consider fasting from selfishness, self-centredness and pride. Pope Francis gives us some great ideas in the pictures opposite.

Finally, we are called to reach out to others and give generously. Certainly it is a time to consider what it is that you do for charities. Perhaps consider doing more than you would usually go. But again, that is the starting point. Our aim is to recognise that all the gifts, talents and opportunities that we are given and intended to help us serve others.

We had a lovely half term and a very quiet start to the second half of the term.

The staff focused on getting the horses ridden and exercised before we are back to lessons from next Monday!

Over the half term there was NSEA training with Georgie and they had competitions which they did really well in! There were very fun Pony Days arranged which the ponies and riders really enjoyed! They run every holiday so if you want to book one you can go onto the STE website. This week was really quiet as there were no lessons and the team focused on exercising the ponies, though there will be lessons and volunteering again as normal next week. The horse of the week is… Roxy!

NSEA News

The NSEA riders have had a busy half term.

Some riders were out competing at the NSEA County Challenge dressage at Parwood as well as the Pony Club Spring Championships held at Arena UK.

At Parwood, Lilly S and Teddy were crowned County Challenge Prelim Champions as the only combination to achieve over 70%. Rosie C and Briggs were very close behind in 3rd with over 69%. Rosie also did a great test with Majyk for 7th.

At Arena UK for the Pony Club Spring Championships, Lulu S had a very successful show finishing 3rd in the Novice warm up class with +69% and then winning her arena in the Intermediate Championship with another +69% score. Well worth the long trip up to Grantham!

We then enjoyed a great afternoon of show jumping training here at STE on Thursday and over the weekend we had several riders out competing.

Lilly S was at Felbridge NSEA showjumping, jumping double clear in the 80cm and the 90cm for 9th and 12th in large classes.

Rosie C went to Pyecombe and won the 60cm and finished 3rd in the 70cm.

Congratulations to Saskia T.V who went to her first competition and finished 6th in the 80cm at Parwood.

Well done all and we are looking forward to another successful half term of competitions!
