As I ponder the thoughts of the past year I realize it’s been a year of change and many blessings for our family. Becky has been honored with 4-H and Monsanto scholarships, Apex winner, Youth International Scholarship, John Deer Scholarship from Agribition judging and becoming a 4-H Ambassador. She graduated from High School in June and started at Lakeland College into an Agriculture Business program. Stacey was extremely excited to receive the interim summer job with the CAA, then in June to be announced as the 2012/13 Canadian Junior Angus Ambassador. Positions that have taken her from one side of Canada to the other, meeting people from all over the world, and being able to discuss agriculture and Canadian Angus genetics. She too was honored with scholarships from 4-H and the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada. Our family was extremely honored in August to be announced as the 2012 Purebred Angus Breeder at the Alberta Angus Association AGM. How humbling it is to be recognized by your peers! We started the summer being hit by a tornado in June, though much material damage thankfully no one was hurt. July and August we toured to junior shows, which is always a treat meeting with old and new friends. November we headed for Farmfair were we had an excellent showing. Our Bull calf Happy Hour 2Z, yearling bull Dynamite 9Y, and Chuck Norris 305X were all class winners. As they all headed into the final round for the Red Angus class Chuck Norris was crowned the Reserve Champion Red Angus Bull! December was the Medicine Hat Pen Show which is always a fantastic time! Along with our partner, Pakowki Ranching Co., we were proud to have Dynamite 9Y voted as people’s choice award for Champion Yearling Bull. In January, Chuck Norris headed for Denver. There for the third year in a row he became a class winner, then Reserve Champion division winner. Along with Northline Angus we are happy to congratulate Doug & Rhonda Paluck of Dickinson, ND for becoming the newest partner on Chuck Norris. 7Z is quite the interesting fella. His sire is Chuck Norris who has earned many accolades in the show ring on the maternal side is Sakic and Smartin’ Up, both of which are standout bulls. 7Z is a thick, solidly made bull with a lot of depth and capacity. Coming from a first calver, 7Z is a bull you don’t want to miss!

SIRES We purchased Chuck Norris in 2010 as a five month old calf, by that time he was already an eye catcher. He’s extremely sound, narrow fronted, good footed with plenty of top. We have used him with everything from heifers to old cows and have been very successful with all. He throws a smaller birth weight calf with plenty of performance. MEM Mumbo was purchased to enhance feet and udders, and he got the job done! His heifers are maturing in the herd now and we are extremely pleased. CD Buckstretcher always throws a good calf with plenty of length. With the Buck Cherry blood these calves are always our top performers and at the top of the scale at weaning time. We AI’d with Pie Atlantic because of his hip and thickness, and this shows through on the calves in the fall. To build good strong females or pounds on your steer calves this makes a great foundation. We used the Equalizer semen for a total outcross with black parents on both sides. On the progeny of bull calves the average birth weight is 78 lbs and 73 lbs on heifers. We are confident he is a heifer bull you can rely on. Robin Hood is a bull we raised, AI’d from Soder Canyon 126M, a bull that was ranked in the top 15% of the breed for calving ease. You never remember his calves at calving time, but they sure catch your eye at weaning time!

These bulls all come from Red Angus cows bred to Rainalta Accelerator 100X Simmental bull. We purchased this sire from the Rainalta sale last year, because of his extreme muscling and length. Our vision here is to produce a hybrid bull for the commercial rancher. We feel this cross will give a little extra power to the calves in the fall, while retaining the good Angus traits on the replacement heifers. This is our third year of this and we have seen the outcome, and it appears to be a great cross.
