CR CONNECTIONS
VIEW FROM 22 Hello CR Team! We are just a few weeks from the close of CR’s 2016 Fiscal year and it looks to be another record year in sales, gross revenues, net revenues, and profit. We have also seen fantastic growth in new and talented CR team members, new high potential clients, office expansions, national awards and recognition, and brand awareness… to name a few successes. CR, we have much to be proud of and thankful for – a big thank you to the entire CR Team, individually and collectively, for making CR architecture + design the success that it is! I also want to thank all of you who attended CR VISION 2017 in Cincinnati a few weeks ago. It was great to have almost our entire staff together in one location and I want to thank all of you who put in the extra time to travel so that we could all be together as one organization. I also want to thank all those of you who offered their feedback though our follow-up survey. We will take your comments to heart and use the information to provide continual improvement in these kind of events. All in all, it was a great opportunity for team building, understanding of the company vision, as well as professional development and self-reflection. You all recall the story of David and Goliath? So let’s suppose that you were the second largest design firm in the world, publicly traded, foreign headquartered, 27,000 staff, 350 offices in 70 countries, $3.4 billion in revenue and you had one architectural division of that same company that had 1,700 employees in 18 offices around the world. That would be pretty cool! Let’s also suppose that that same company division unveiled a new corporate logo that looked surprisingly similar, perhaps even somewhat identical, to that of a comparatively small Cincinnati based, privately held US architecture firm with 5 offices, 165 staff, and .008 % of the annual revenue of the international firm. What would you do? Well, this is a real scenario where we legally cried foul with the new corporate logo of Callison / RTKL and sent them a cease and desist order with the unveiling of their new brand. It took them all of 4 days to realize the error of their ways. They will be unravelling their new “CR” brand tag over the next 90 days. Who ever said you can’t fight the big guys? A big thanks to our legal partners at Frost Brown Todd. Finally, as a follow-up to our CR VISION 2017 meeting and the Directors Business Planning meeting, the leadership team will be in Dallas the second week of September for our annual FY2017 Leadership Planning Meeting. This will result in the finalization of our business plan for the coming year. Look for more news and updates by the end of the month. Thanks again to all of you for what you do every day to make CR one of the top architecture firms in the US! Regards, David S. Arends

YMCA & ERS Senior Housing Opens
A ribbon-cutting ceremony in August marked the grand opening of the district’s new elementary school, which was built into a joint campus as part of CR’s master plan that will feature a new middle school on site in years to come. The new school features communal spaces for the district such as a theatre and arts corridor. CR’s interior design team did the interiors and graphic design for the project from schematic all the way through construction administration. The Central Parkway YMCA and ERS Senior Housing have opened their doors to the public. The historic renovation was completed earlier in August and features five floors of affordable senior living above the gym facilities and Greater Cincinnati YMCA offices. CR Designs New Café for Duke Energy Convention Center The new café at the Duke Energy Convention Center features an angular bar as the focal piece surrounded by an assortment of seating arrangements for both casual groups and private meetings. The following creative statement was co-authored by Emily Huxtable and Amber Gentry. CRAFTED ARTISTRY “Driven by Cincinnati’s deeply-rooted art culture, the design exhibits an appreciation for our history of craftsmanship. Simple details of pattern and texture are used to create a warm, sophisticated and inviting space that transitions smoothly from day to night. showered in hand-crafted qualities, the café provides a unique off-beat experience to connect and refuel.”
INSIDE CR July and August flew by, but our team found time to get together for creative inspiration and professional development at VISION 2017, held at the Netherland Plaza in Cincinnati. SPARK HQ went on a visit to the Contemporary Arts Center, designed by the late Zaha Hadid, to check out the compelling work of Do Ho Suh. His sculptural work celebrates a candid narrative of his dual life as an Asian-American artist splitting time between opposite ends of the world.

TEAM SPOTLIGHTS Team Barthol, based in the Seattle office, is in charge of the Kroger West-NW regional projects for the Smith’s, Fry’s, Fred Meyer and QFC brands. For the Smith’s brand, most of the work is being completed in Utah with three stores set for opening this year in Wood Cross, Springville and Saratoga Springs. Three others are set for completion in 2017. Fry’s work is being handled by Project Manager, Che Fortaleza’s, team and includes work on new Marketplace stores in both Litchfield and Mesa, AZ. Overall, CR will open nine new stores in 2016 and is slated to open another 12 Fry’s in 2017. Rich Gardner, a Project Manager on Team Barthol, works with his team of Temi, Becky, Andrea and Michael on several projects spanning from Oregon to Alaska for the Fred Meyer and QFC brands. The Miami University North Quad Renovation buildings opened up this fall to Miami students. At an Open House on August 11, University Faculty and Staff were able to tour the four newly renovated residence halls and one renovated dining hall. The largest renovation project on Miami’s campus, with over 1,000 beds, was well received and highlighted the changes Miami has been undertaking the last several years on campus to provide students with a better living and learning environment. The Higher Education team is busy working on two new residence halls for Miami University. Scheduled to begin construction this fall and early winter, the two new residence halls will be completed for the 2018 school year. Housing just over 600 students, the new residence halls represent the final pieces to the University’s master plan for new residence hall construction. By the end of this project, Miami will have re-built or renovated 21 of the 30 residence halls on campus in the last seven years. The Higher Education team also completed the Central Parkway YMCA renovation project this summer. On July 20, the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati reopened its doors to the newly renovated YMCA facility. Part of the $29M renovation, the new rehabbed historic building houses state of the art exercise equipment, large exercise and cardio studios and fully-equipped locker rooms. On August 11, the other half of the renovation was completed as Episcopal Retirement Services and the Model Group opened the doors to Central Parkway Place. This half is housed in the upper five floors of the nine-story YMCA building, the renovation includes 65 apartments for Senior Affordable Living. Residents will begin moving into the new apartments in early fall of this year.
