Message
From the President The Rev. Marvin A. McMickle, Ph.D.
Dear Alumni/ae and Friends of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School,
while serving as a witness to Christ and the gift of God’s transformative love for all. Through God’s grace, you make this possible and we can’t thank you enough.
2013-2014 Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (CRCDS) Annual Report. We are grateful for the generous support of all those listed in these pages and we continue to thank God for each and every one of you. Without your support, the mission of CRCDS would be truly impossible and its vital work of providing educated, progressive, transformative leaders would go largely undone. Thanks to you and to all those who have supported CRCDS over the years, CRCDS continues to change lives, just as it has for almost 200 years, by preparing leaders who are pastoral in their approach, prophetic in both word and deed and, of course, learned, attaining the knowledge necessary to sustain them in an increasingly complex world. Together, these three characteristics are the hallmark of a CRCDS graduate. Our school is a living testament to all that can be accomplished when people of faith answer God’s call and work together to positively impact our world. Please know how grateful we are for you, your friendship and your generosity.
The responsibility of forming leaders for the church and society is a truly awesome responsibility and we are honored to take up this mantle each and every day. One constant reminder of the importance of our task is framed in the display case outside my office. There for all to see is the admission photograph of a very young Martin Luther King, Jr. along with a letter of inquiry from him and a letter of support from his father. I walk past this display each and every day before I enter my office and there isn’t a time when I am not struck by the impact that theological education can have on the world. When I think of the life and work of Dr. King and the countless other alumni/ae of our prestigious school, I think of our legacy, the importance and goodness of our work, and the necessity to safeguard this institution during these challenging times in the life of the church so that it will continue to bear fruit for generations to come. By the grace of God, our good work forms leaders who, like Dr. King, help to bring the Kingdom a little closer to all people, making our world a little more just, a little kinder, a little more compassionate, a little more loving.
It is my privilege to share with you the
The Annual Report provides an added opportunity to introduce you to a few of our most treasured resources— our students. Your generosity makes their education possible and your support is a direct investment not only in them, but in the future of the church and in the progressive values all of us at CRCDS hold dear. I encourage you to take the time to read these student profiles and rest assured knowing that our future and the future of our children and grandchildren are in excellent hands. Your investment is paying real dividends today in the form of successful leaders who speak truth to power, who advocate for those in need, who transform society 2
My constant prayer for CRCDS, its faculty and its staff, is that we remain ever mindful of our task and our responsibility, that we do our absolute best to serve not only the students and alumni/ae of this beloved institution, but those who provide the financial support to make our mission a reality. We honor the legacies of Colgate Rochester, The Baptist Missionary Training School, Crozer Theological and CRCDS by ensuring the future of progressive theological education is bright, dynamic and successful. We do not know exactly what the future holds, but we do know it will require thoughtful,
educated leaders who are able to bring the Good News of the Gospel to all people in a way that embraces difference, instills hope, and promotes love for all God’s people, while keeping the challenge of justice front and center. An investment in CRCDS is an investment in the future and in the Good News of Jesus.
President P r e si d e n t
Graduate theological education faces many challenges today, not the least of which is the cost of providing quality education to students regardless of their financial need. While thanking you for all you do and have done for CRCDS, I must be bold in asking for your continued support. Please share our good work with others and encourage them to truly make a difference in the world by supporting CRCDS. I am confident the Lord will continue to bless us with friends like you who value the good and essential work entrusted to us. God willing, CRCDS will continue to thrive for 200 more years and beyond. That foundation is built today by friends like you and we are so very grateful for your generosity and, of course, your constant prayers. On behalf of all of us at CRCDS and all those countless souls who over the years have been nurtured, challenged and supported by one of our exemplary alumni/ae, I offer our profound thanks. May God continue to bless you in the days and weeks ahead. Yours through Christ,
The Rev. Marvin A. McMickle, Ph.D.

O lumabusola “Yinka” Gardiner ( M .Div.)
“The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.” —Anthony Robbins
Ask Yinka Gardiner to describe her path to the ministry, and she shakes her head. “I really don’t understand it myself,” she says.
“Several times since 2008, on separate occasions, the Lord revealed His desire to have me ‘go deeper’ in my walk with Him. I didn’t really process what that meant until one day, I was asked to do altar call. I literally felt the Lord speaking through me. What I said and how I prayed was almost an out-of-body experience. There was only one explanation: this could only happen through the grace of God.”
Yinka says she knew then, that the Lord was setting her aside for something. When she finally decided to answer the call to ministry in 2013, events happened “at warp speed.” Her husband decided to return to Cornell University to pursue full time studies, necessitating a move from Silver Spring, MD to Ithaca, NY. Her own future was very uncertain.
A month before leaving for Ithaca, Yinka reluctantly composed a letter of resignation to present to her boss and prepared to leave a job she loved: Finance Director for The Dalit Freedom Network, USA, a Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit that works to end injustices for some of the poorest and neglected people in India.
“We realized we were witnessing God literally carving out our path.”
Yinka said that she and her husband knew they “needed to let go and trust God for His provision. We realized when we allowed ourselves to walk in faith, God literally carved out a path for us.” A spacious, affordable place to live, which once seemed an impossibility, became available. Yinka’s supervisor emphatically declined to accept her two-week notice of resignation and instead formulated a flexible plan to allow Yinka to work from her home office in Ithaca. With employment in place, Yinka turned her focus toward her goal of theological education. The proximity of Ithaca to Rochester, while not ideal, made it possible for Yinka to enroll at CRCDS in the fall of 2013. Yinka says the most satisfying and gratifying piece of this journey is the encouragement and support she’s received from the CRCDS community. Worries and concern over her daughter, Sade, accompanying her to classes turned to blessed relief, she says, when faculty warmly encouraged her and classmates offered to watch her daughter while she studied.
One of Yinka’s greatest goals is to serve the Lord within her passion for discipleship and missions. She takes great joy in believers growing in Christ. For Yinka, missions should not only meet the needs of the world’s marginalized, but should seek reconciliation between the disregarded population and those doing the “overlooking.” To that end, she plans to examine race relations directly through publishing her writings and serving as a public speaker. She realizes that this may require her to attain a Ph.D., but she says, “My parents were originally from Nigeria and my husband’s parents were from Liberia. We both understand and embrace the need to work hard and sacrifice to achieve our goals.”
Yinka’s story truly illustrates the lesson from Philippians 4:19 —“God will provide.” Through your generosity, CRCDS is providing Yinka with the quality theological education necessary to minister in the world today. On behalf of Yinka and all the students of CRCDS, thank you!

“The moment you accept God’s ordering, that moment your work ceases to be a task and becomes your calling, you pass from bondage to freedom, from the shadow-land of life into life itself.” —Henry Clay Trumbull
On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, Sebrone Johnson stayed home from work.
That decision, by chance or design, forever changed his life —his office was located at 1 Liberty Plaza, directly across the street from the World Trade Center. At the time, Sebrone was immersed in a fast-paced career that left little opportunity for rest or reflection. Looking back now, he sees the events of September 11th as a kairotic moment that opened his heart, allowing him to hear God’s urging in a definitive way. “I realized,” Sebrone says, “but for God’s grace, most of the work I was truly called to do might go undone.”
After a period of reflection and discernment, Sebrone made the decision to attend Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, which he says has been one of the best experiences of his life. He currently carries a full course load, while working full time, pastoring a church and caring for his family. Despite these responsibilities and demands, Sebrone is always smiling. When asked how he finds the strength to be happy, Sebrone says it is the “rock solid conviction that God is always there” no matter what the day holds.
Successfully juggling multiple roles is a well-honed skill Sebrone learned from his late father, Rev. Johnny F. Atkins, who passed away January 15, 2015, on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthdate. Sebrone considers both men his heroes for their unflagging energy, drive and deep commitment to church, family and community. In addition, Sebrone admires Dr. King’s “ability to see scripture in a more panoramic way.”
God’s presence may lay in quiet whispers or trickling tears. But He is always there.
Asked whether doubt or uncertainty have ever impeded his journey, Sebrone says there have been plenty of obstacles in his life: the death of one of his dearest friends, birth issues with both of his sons, nearly losing his wife in a car accident, and juggling several careers at once. He acknowledges that while these challenges have been significant, “Ultimately, life is based on this fact: God’s presence may lay in quiet whispers or trickling tears. But He is always there. And that is sufficient.” Sebrone attended Union College in Schenectady, NY as well as St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics and was honored as an All-American Scholar. He currently serves as the Divisional Director of Technology and Program Operations at the Urban League of Rochester, NY and serves on the boards of E3 Rochester and the Vertus Charter School.
Although his educational, spiritual and professional credentials are noteworthy, Sebrone considers his family to be his greatest asset. He refers to his wife, Donna and his two sons, Bryan (25) and Darius (12) as the loves of his life.
Sebrone is proud to pastor The Greater Harvest Church in Rochester, NY, and while his congregation excites and motivates him, it disturbs him to see people regularly separated from God by “self-imposed sanctions based on past failings.” He says there is no sadder sight than, “watching people go about life, feeling they are beyond the reach of God’s love and redemption.”
The solution to this problem, for Sebrone, lies in a quotation by Norman B. Rice: “Dare to reach out your hand into the darkness, to pull another into the light.” CRCDS is equipping Sebrone to extend his reach to ease the burden of those he serves. The generosity of all those who support CRCDS makes Sebrone’s ministry possible.

“Every experience God gives us, every person He puts in our lives, is the perfect preparation for a future only He can see.” —Corrie ten Boom
Gifts, it is said, come in many forms. In the fall of 2006, Aleka
Schmidt, a 28 year old married mother of a two year–old daughter, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following rigorous treatment to save her life and eighteen hard months later, she says she was blessed with the gifts of feeling closer to God and a much deeper understanding of herself. “Cancer doesn’t change you,” she says. “It’s a refiner’s fire. It strips away all the distractions in life, forces you to go inward, and allows you to be who you really are.” Through her experience with cancer, Aleka discovered who she really was: a strong, talented, giving woman who wanted to go deeper into her experience with the church and respond to God’s call to seminary. Aleka describes her decision to enroll in seminary as the culmination of many years of “God’s nudges” finally getting her attention. Church life and leadership were always an important part of her life; she served as the youngest deacon in her church, sat on church boards and directed music, but had not considered something “more formal.” God’s “nudges” turned into “pushes” in the form of three friends who had completed degrees at CRCDS. Their encouragement led Aleka to apply.
Growing up as the youngest child on her family farm in Kendall, NY, Aleka was often “put on a pedestal” and somewhat shielded from the harsher realities of life. After her diagnosis, she marshalled the discipline she had developed as a classically trained musician to help get her through treatments and help her be present for her daughter and husband. Music also played an enormous part in her healing, and through her work as a music therapist, she now shares her gifts helping others heal.
“God’s ‘nudges’ finally got my attention.”
“My experience at CRCDS is completely different from what I thought it would be,” Aleka says. “I enrolled in classes that would meet degree and denominational requirements that suited my busy schedule. I figured I could take a few classes here and there without getting ‘too involved’ in the community. I jumped right in with my first classes, Hebrew and Level II Theology. Yikes! What was I thinking?”
Each time she arrived on campus in those early days, she sat in All-School worship, nearly in tears, praying, “Lord, I’m here today, but there’s not much more I can offer you right now.” She says the answer to this prayer was always, “You’re doing all I have asked. Just keep at it.”
Aleka has done that and much more. Despite a 62 mile one–way commute to campus, she has truly been “present,” forming friendships, building lasting relationships and participating in Supervised Ministry. She led All-Student Worship for the past two years and has recently been hired as preacher by First Baptist Church in Albion, NY.
Aleka enjoys using music to minister to those she serves, including the elderly and the dying. She has found many rewards in working with the Hospice of Orleans County, Lakeside Nursing Home, and the ARC of Orleans County, helping children with disabilities. She says music can access several parts of the brain simultaneously and, in so doing, “speaks to everyone’s soul.”
Aleka is grateful for the generosity of the many friends and alumni/ae of CRCDS. Through their support, Aleka is able to answer God’s call in a new way. She is grateful for the opportunity to serve as a role model for others who have seen their faith tested and she is living proof of the ability of faith to make one stronger. CRCDS has played a central role in her development as an effective and compassionate servant of God. We are grateful for all those who have made Aleka’s education possible.

Message
From the CRCDS Board Chair The Rt. Rev. Jack M. McKelvey
Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (CRCDS), I bring you greetings from the Hill. I am grateful for the opportunity and privilege to thank each and every one of you who made a financial contribution to the school during the 2013–2014 fiscal year. The Trustees of CRCDS are mindful of just how many people it takes to provide the CRCDS education and we are acutely aware of the resources necessary to be sure that CRCDS continues to thrive in the years to come. Every gift of support to the school is stewarded as a precious investment in progressive theological education of the highest order. The Trustees are extremely grateful for the many ways you provide for the school, from your prayers and student referrals to your support of financial aid, scholarship, general operations and our beautiful campus. Our supporters are people like you—loyal and dedicated to making sure the mission of CRCDS is carried out effectively and efficiently. You believe in leaders who truly make a difference in our world. CRCDS makes those leaders possible. On behalf of all the Trustees, I offer my sincere gratitude for your steadfast and prayerful support that sustains and energizes our beloved CRCDS. CRCDS is in the process of charting a new course for the future. The church, as you well know, is facing tremendous challenges, from declining Sunday attendance and membership to the high cost of maintaining aging buildings. CRCDS is, of course, not immune from these challenges since we are connected to the health of the local congregation in a very real way.

Fewer church-goers means fewer people interested in ministry, at least ministry as most of us have come to experience it. Fewer registered members often results in the closure of churches which subsequently results in fewer places for CRCDS graduates and others to work. This can, unfortunately, result in a downward spiral from which it is difficult to recover.
I offer these examples not as cause for pessimism or hopelessness, but rather as a means of reassuring you that we, the Trustees, understand the issues before us and, more importantly, that we are charting a course for the school that addresses these challenges head on so that we may continue to provide quality, progressive leaders so essential for our communities. The ways people understand “spirituality” and “religion” are clearly changing. Despite this sizable cultural shift, human needs remain constant as does the necessity for leaders who are able to address those needs in responsible ways that bear witness to the genuine presence of Christ in our midst. In a very real way, the need for CRCDS, its voice and its graduates has never been greater. How we deliver education—and to whom—is broadening as are the overall offerings of the school. Our hope is to bring the CRCDS education and experience to an ever-widening group of people and communities who might otherwise not be exposed to progressive theological inquiry and critical thinking. We are eager to share the results of our strategic planning with you and will do so when it is completed later this year. Our plan provides a clear, exciting vision for CRCDS full of opportunity and hope, while strategically addressing the realities of our age. This, in many ways, is exactly what CRCDS and all of the schools that share our legacy, have always done. We provide progressive theological education while adapting
ourselves to the times in which we live without distorting our mission. This legacy is what we will soon celebrate during our year-long Bicentennial celebration in 2017. I ask that you draw a big circle around that year on your calendars so that you look for opportunities to join us as we come together to celebrate the gift of our past and the promise of our future. Far from mere reminiscence, our year will be spent looking to the future and setting the foundation for the next 200 years. We have all been
blessed with the gift of CRCDS and we are certainly blessed by you and your faithful support. Thank you for the vital role you play in making our work possible. May the Lord bless you and keep you.
The The Rt. Rt. Rev. Rev. Jack Jack M. M. McKelvey Chair, Board Ch d off Trustees
