Regenerative Engineering Edited by

Cato T. Laurencin and Yusuf Khan University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, USA

Traditional approaches to tissue repair involve tissue engineering, in which cells and biodegradable scaffolds are combined to repair damaged or diseased tissue. This method has been in use for almost 20 years, but more recently, the field of regenerative medicine—which involves the regeneration of damaged tissue and organs through the use of stem cells and cytokines—has emerged and is gaining momentum. The influx of these innovative approaches to tissue regeneration and repair has necessitated a re-examination of the available teaching tools for undergraduate and graduate students. Both tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have been taught at the undergraduate and graduate level through a varied selection of approaches, using an ever-widening spectrum of textbooks. Given the similarity between the two fields, it is important to examine where each approach overlaps and where each differs. Regenerative engineering is at the core of this overlap and distinction. It is the intersection of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering—where regenerative medicine focuses on the biological aspects of tissue regeneration via stem cells, factors, and cytokines, and tissue engineering focuses on the integration of materials science and life science. The challenge to future researchers is to understand both the research and the application of ideas to real-world problems. Regenerative Engineering provides a framework and a strategy through which future researchers can be educated in this direction. With introductory chapters in materials science and life science, the book uses a combination of fundamental lecture-based teaching and problem-based learning approaches that help develop students into future researchers capable of completing the translation of their work from the lab to the operating room. Using a similar structure in each chapter to provide continuity throughout the text, the book is enhanced with examples, case studies on clinically relevant issues, and extensive references to facilitate learning and encourage further study. Contents: Introduction Basic Cell Biology Morphogenesis and Developmental Biology Basic Anatomy and Physiology Basic Materials Science Biomaterials Introduction to Regenerative Engineering Organ Regenerative Engineering Cardiovascular Regenerative Engineering Musculoskeletal Regenerative Engineering Neural Regenerative Engineering

Fundamentals and Strategies

An Enabling Tool for Quality-by-Design

Lanny Robbins Larco Technologies LLC, Midland, Michigan, USA

Edited by

Emphasis on improved quality and performance of distilled products and the demand for reduced operating costs place a heavy burden on both the personnel responsible for profitability and the manufacturing department charged with operating the processing equipment. There have been dramatic improvements in the computer software and hardware used to simulate and model the distillation process and potential response to experimentation, but mastering the art of distillation process and control still requires solid understanding of a large body of information. With a focus on achieving product purity at low cost, Distillation Control, Optimization, and Tuning: Fundamentals and Strategies highlights core concepts. These include process variables for continuous binary distillation columns and the four basic control strategies, the distillate and bottoms product quality performance objectives, and the tuning of process control loops. Without dwelling on complex mathematical descriptions, the book presents the fundamentals of process control of a distillation column as a separation and purification unit operation. It covers the concepts and functional criteria that are critical to successful implementation of process control, as well as measurement and improvement of product quality performance. It describes how process control loops for distillation columns can be tuned for stable operation, with a balance between minimum variability from setpoint changes and excellent response to load disturbances.

Handbook of Nanoscience, Engineering, and Technology Third Edition Edited by

William A. Goddard III, Donald Brenner, Sergey E. Lyshevski, and Gerald J. Iafrate The first and second editions of the Handbook of Nanoscience, Engineering, and Technology, published in 2003 and 2008, exemplified the progress in nanoscience toward the vision put forward by Richard Feynman in his 1959 address, “There is Plenty of Room at the Bottom.” Feynman speculated about manipulating materials atom by atom, challenging the technical community “to find ways of manipulating and controlling things on a small scale.” Inspired by his vision, nanoscience is today defined as the manipulation and control of materials at the spatial scale of a few hundred angstroms (one-thousandth of the width of a human hair) or less. The extraordinary progress in nanoscience over the last decade now allows for the tailoring and combining of the physical, biological, and engineering properties of matter at the atomistic level of nature’s architectural building blocks. Critical to progress in nanoscience has been the stunning advances in synthesis, fabrication, and processing to achieve designed nanostructures complemented by nanoscale resolution tool development that allows characterization at the nanoscale. Simultaneous with these experimental advances, theory and simulation based on first principles has advanced from hundreds of atoms to the millions of atoms involved in a nanodevice of 20 nm dimensions. These developments now enable atomistic level tailoring and control of materials, setting the stage for the next revolution of nanoscale manufacturing where scalable technologies are used to manufacture large numbers of devices—each with complex functionalities. The visionary challenge put forth by Feynman in 1959 is well on its way to becoming a reality. As a testimonial to this reality, the first two editions of the Handbook included broad categories of innovative nanoscience, engineering, and technology emerging in the 2003 and 2008 timeframe. The Third Edition extends the portfolio further, including additional chapters on nanoenergy, electronic optics in graphene, metamaterials, nanomaterials for energy storage devices, photovoltaics, DNA devices and assembly, digital microfluidic lab-on-a-chip, and more. This edition also updates select chapters that appeared in the second edition. Selected Contents: There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom: An Invitation to Enter a New Fields of Physics Room at the Bottom, Plenty of Tyranny at the Top Twenty Years to Develop Nanotechnology: 2000-2020 Nanomagnet Logic Quantum Transport at the Nanoscale Spontaneous Emission of Bloch Oscillation Radiation in the Terahertz Regime Molecular and BioMolecular Processing: Solutions, Directions and Prospects Spin Field Effect Transistors: The Pros and the Cons Optical Behavior of Periodic Nanostructured Media: A Classical Electromagnetic (Mesoscopic) Approach Theory of Ballistic Electron Transport in n+–i–n+ Diodes: Properties in THz-Frequency Range. “An impressive work covering all the important nanofabrication topics and contents … Highly recommended.”

Winner of a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book Award 2011! " … this outstanding introduction to the broad field of nanotechnology provides a solid foundation for further study. Summing Up: Highly recommended.” —N. M Fahrenkopf, University at Albany, in CHOICE, 2011

Nano novices come from a wide variety of backgrounds, so an effective text must assume limited understanding of background material, not be overly focused on any particular area, and still maintain scientific rigor and quality. Fitting neatly between popular science books and high-level treatises, Nanotechnology: Understanding Small Systems, Second Edition works from the ground up to provide: • A detailed yet accessible introduction to one of the world’s fastest growing fields, understandable to members of a variety of disciplines • A clear presentation of real-world examples and original illustrations, as well as hundreds of homework problems of varying types, including multiple choice, true-false, in-depth calculation, and essay (with complete solutions manual) • A systems-based approach that illustrates how underlying areas of nano are assembled to create systems with unique functions and characteristics

—Professor Din Ping Tsai, National Taiwan University

While many books are dedicated to individual aspects of nanofabrication, what is needed is a single source that defines and explains the total vision of the field. Filling this gap, Nanofabrication Handbook presents a unique collection of the new and most important established approaches to nanofabrication. Contributors from leading research facilities and academic institutions around the world define subfields, offer practical instructions and examples, and pave the way for future research. Helping readers to select the proper fabricating technique for their experiments, the book provides a broad vision of the most critical problems and explains how to solve them. It includes basic definitions and introduces the main underlying concepts of nanofabrication. The book also discusses the major advantages and disadvantages of each approach and offers a wide variety of examples of cutting-edge applications. Each chapter focuses on a particular method or aspect of study. For every method, the contributors describe the underlying theoretical basis, resolution, patterns and substrates used, and applications. They show how applications at the nanoscale require a different process and understanding than those at the microscale. For each experiment, they elucidate key solutions to problems relating to materials, methods, and surface considerations.

Comparing nanoscale and macroscale systems reveals the complex and fundamental differences between phenomena at different scales and uncovers the specific challenges and opportunities of nano. With its engaging and entertaining style, this book provides a gateway into an exciting and rapidly evolving area of science.

A complete resource for this rapidly emerging interdisciplinary field, this handbook provides practical information for planning the experiments of any project that employs nanofabrication techniques. It gives readers a foundation to enter the complex world of nanofabrication and inspires the scientific community at large to push the limits of nanometer resolution.
