In addition to tests recommended by regulatory authorities, this globally relevant resource includes information about clinical chemistry tests as well as hepato-, nephro-, cardio-, and endocrine toxicity. It also covers pre-analytical and analytical variables, which play a far more important role in interpreting data from animal studies as compared to human studies when variables can be well-controlled with less physiological effect. Furthermore, this edition takes its discussion of biomarkers to the next level, exploring newer and related investigations, such as metabolomics/NMR and multiplex technology.
This book is designed to help new entrants to the fields of laboratory animal hematology and toxicology, where the challenges are stimulating and the “rules” for human hematology do not always apply. Chapters are written to cover the three main blood cell types—erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocytes—and potential toxic effects on these cells. A chapter on immunotoxicology has been included as this scientific discipline is closely aligned to hematology. Other chapters are devoted to preanalytical and analytical variables that affect animal studies.
• Addresses normal and abnormal clinical chemistry of lab animals
Information has been collated from published papers, textbooks, and unpublished data: references are provided at the end of each chapter or in Appendix A, where readers are provided with key references on published reference ranges for laboratory animals.
• Provides more in-depth coverage of acute phase response proteins and cytokine measurements • Includes newer biochemical investigation techniques such as metabolomics/NMR and multiplex technology • Offers new information on troponins, lipids, and electrolytes
Covers the full range of the discipline, from basic principles to diagnostic evaluation, in a clear, cohesive, and concise manner
