Color Atlas of Forensic Toolmark Identification Nicholas Petraco John Jay College, New York, USA

In the wake of the Daubert ruling, the use of forensic toolmark evidence in court has been problematic, in that the conclusions of forensic scientists as to toolmark origin often lack scientifically sound statistical proof. In the Color Atlas of Forensic Toolmark Identification, noted forensic expert Nicholas Petraco helps move toolmark examination from an art to a science. The first part of the book contains an anthology of tried and true methods, procedures, and traditional techniques used by practitioners of this discipline for over a century. It contains rationales and methodologies for casework, discussion of the use of new materials and techniques for preparation of known standards, and the application of various methods of statistical proof to further establish toolmark examination as a sound scientific endeavor. The second section contains a compilation of commonly used hand tools and the marks they typically produce. Provides clear instruction on how to: • Use lenses and microscopes to view images of toolmarks • Make accurate and precise measurements of tools on macroscopic and microscopic scales • Properly photograph toolmark evidence • Compare a subject tool with the questioned toolmarks to determine toolmark origin

About the Author Nicholas Petraco earned a B.S. in chemistry and an M.S. in forensic science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the City University of New York. He served as a detective/criminalist at New York City’s Police Laboratory from 1968 to 1990 and held the position of senior forensic microscopist of the laboratory’s trace section between 1982 and 1990, when he became a private forensic consultant. Mr. Petraco has helped educate thousands of forensic scientists, worked on more than 5000 death investigations on behalf of prosecution and defense attorneys, and testified as an expert in more than 500 trials conducted in local, state, and federal criminal and civil courts.

Examines marks made by a range of tools, including: • Screwdrivers • Crowbars and prybars • Handsaws • Hammers • Hatchets and Axes • Wrenches • Vise grips • Pliers • Wire cutters • Metal snips • Crimping tools • Knives and scissors • Chisels and punches • Drill bits More than 400 color photos enhance the text, and numerous case studies describe evidence found and conclusions drawn from the evidence. This unique atlas empowers law enforcement professionals to capture the evidence they need to solve the case.

Donnell R. Christian, Jr. and Stephanie Drilling Professional Business Solutions, O'Fallon, Missouri, USA

In order to gain accreditation, every laboratory must have a superior quality assurance program. The keys to a successful program are the operational and technical manuals and associated documents which define the program and its various components. Written by experts with global experience in setting up laboratories, Implementing Quality in Laboratory Policies and Processes: Using Templates, Project Management, and Six Sigma provides templates for the various policies, procedures, and forms that should be contained in the quality assurance, operational, and technical manuals of a laboratory seeking accreditation. Templates for the entire project life cycle The book begins with a general introduction and overview of quality assurance and then moves on to cover implementation strategies. It contains best practices and templates for the project management of the design and implementation of the laboratory operational and technical manuals required to establish a quality assurance program. The templates span the entire project life cycle, from initiation, to planning, to execution, to monitoring, and finally, to closure. The book also examines how Six Sigma concepts can be used to optimize laboratories, and contains templates that cover administrative issues, quality assurance, sample control, and health and safety issues. In addition, there is a section of criteria files that relate the individual document templates to specific accreditation criterion. ComputerAided Forensic Facial Comparison Edited by

Martin Paul Evison University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Richard W. Vorder Bruegge FBI, Quantico, Virginia, USA

Create a Lasting Impression with Crime Scene Photographs The first pieces of evidence viewed by jurors are oftentimes the photographs recorded by the crime scene investigator. Professional and accurate photographic documentation is critical for creating lasting first impressions in the minds of a jury. Solving a range of photographic challenges, Advanced Crime Scene Photography assists investigators in creating photographic evidence that is engaging, interesting, and informative, giving them greater credibility when testifying in court. Beginning with a review of basic photography principles, the book seamlessly integrates this information with corresponding applications in crime scene photography. Mindful of cost-saving concerns in most law enforcement agencies, it provides useful tips on creating compelling photographic presentations on a limited budget using everyday items in lieu of expensive equipment. Enhanced with more than 100 photographs, it explores a range of topics in crime scene photography, including: • Fingerprint, footwear, and tirewear impressions • Tool and bite marks • Bloodstain patterns • Nighttime and low-light photography • Flash photography • Painting with light techniques • Luminol reactions • Laser trajectories • Ultraviolet and infrared light photography Thinking outside of the box, analyzing photographic challenges, and determining the best way to record a particular composition are all keys to the successful capture of photographic images that will leave a lasting impression with the viewer. Your answer to the call for more rigorous science in the courtroom

Darren Franck

Statistical methods provide a logical, coherent framework in which data from experimental science can be analyzed. However, many researchers lack the statistical skills or resources that would allow them to explore their data to its full potential. Introduction to Data Analysis with R for Forensic Sciences minimizes theory and mathematics and focuses on the application and practice of statistics to provide researchers with the dexterity necessary to systematically analyze data discovered from the fruits of their research. Using traditional techniques and employing examples and tutorials with real data collected from experiments, this book presents the following critical information necessary for researchers:

Advanced Engineering Associates, Charleston, West Virginia, USA

Developed from 25 years of investigating various accidents, this book demonstrates the application of mathematics to modeling accident reconstructions involving a range of moving vehicles. The authors note several similarities and differences among the hundreds of reconstructions discussed in the text and present techniques such as photogrammetry and computer modeling. They also address vehicle specifications, momentum methods, low speed impacts, and the limitations of applicability of the methods employed in accident reconstruction. Catalog no. 88971, January 2010, 328 pp. ISBN: 978-1-4200-8897-7, $119.95 / £76.99

• A refresher on basic statistics and an introduction to R • Considerations and techniques for the visual display of data through graphics • An overview of statistical hypothesis tests and the reasoning behind them • A comprehensive guide to the use of the linear model, the foundation of most statistics encountered • An introduction to extensions to the linear model for commonly encountered scenarios, including logistic and Poisson regression • Instruction on how to plan and design experiments in a way that minimizes cost and maximizes the chances of finding differences that may exist

Tire Tread and Tire Track Evidence Recovery and Forensic Examination William J. Bodziak Bodziak Forensics, Palm Coast, Florida, USA

Focusing on forensic examples but useful for anyone working in a laboratory, this volume enables researchers to get the most out of their experiments by allowing them to cogently analyze the data they have collected, saving valuable time and effort.

The analysis of tire marks is a key area within the forensic discipline of impression evidence. Using actual case studies, this volume presents practical methods for recovering, examining, and interpreting tire mark evidence. It discusses the use of various casting materials to make molds of the evidence for preservation and study and also demonstrates how to interpret skid marks. The text contains 200 photographs to illustrate impressions and techniques for investigation.

3D Optical and Radiological Scanning and Reconstruction in Forensic Medicine Edited by

Michael J. Thali and Richard Dirnhofer Institute of Forensic Medicine, University of Berne, Switzerland

Peter Vock Institute of Diagnostic, Interventional and Pediatric Radiology, University Hospital, Bern, Switzerland

Extensively reorganized and revised, this classic bestseller provides professionals across disciplines with a common resource for rape investigation. It brings into focus the five different principals involved: the police investigator, examining nurse, forensic scientist, crisis counselor, and prosecutor. This edition adds chapters on drugfacilitated sexual assault, geographic profiling, medical examination of sexually abused children, and linkage analysis.

Badly decomposed or mummified corpses and restrictions found in conservative branches of some religions often make autopsies impossible to perform. In addition, backlogs at the coroner’s office can create situations where the personnel cannot keep up with the cases. The techniques shown in this color atlas provide methods for performing autopsies that are more efficient and minimally invasive. These procedures utilize state-ofthe-art imaging technologies which uncover information that would be otherwise unattainable.
