As the amount of information in biology expands exponentially, it becomes increasingly important for textbooks to distill the vast amount of scientific knowledge into concise principles and enduring concepts. As with previous editions, MBoC6 accomplishes this goal with clear writing and beautiful illustrations. The Sixth Edition has been extensively revised and updated with the latest research in the field of cell biology, and it provides an exceptional framework for teaching and learning. The entire illustration program has been greatly enhanced. As a new feature, each chapter now contains intriguing open-ended questions highlighting “what we don’t know,” introducing students to challenging areas of future research. Updated end-of-chapter problems reflect new research discussed in the text. New questions on developmental biology, tissues and stem cells, the immune system, and pathogens are added to the final four chapters. 2014, 1416pp., Paperback, ISBN: 978-0-8153-4464-3, £75.00 ■ The Immune System, Fourth Edition Peter Parham The Immune System, Fourth Edition, emphasizes the human immune system and synthesizes immunological concepts into a coherent, up-to-date, and reader-friendly account of how the immune system works. Written for undergraduate, medical, veterinary, dental, and pharmacy students, it makes generous use of medical examples to illustrate immunological concepts. The Fourth Edition has been extensively revised and updated, and will be accompanied by an updated and greatly expanded question bank. 2014, 552pp., Paperback, ISBN: 978-0-8153-4527-5, £53.00 ■ Introducing Genetics: From Mendel to Molecules, Second Edition Alison Thomas he new edition of Introducing Genetics is a clear, concise, and accessible guide to T inheritance and variation in individuals and populations. It first establishes the principles of Mendelian inheritance and the nature of chromosomes, before tackling quantitative and population genetics. The final three chapters introduce the molecular mechanisms that underlie genetics, including the techniques responsible for the current genetic revolution. As genetics affects all living organisms, examples are taken from insects, plants, animals, and humans. Each chapter ends with a set of problems to help the reader develop their understanding of genetics. 2014, 250pp., Paperback, ISBN: 978-0-8153-4509-1, £22.95
■ Scientific Integrity: Text and Cases in Responsible Conduct of Research, Fourth Edition Francis L. Macrina Allegations of fraud, conflict of interest, and other ethical dilemmas have troubled the scientific community. With increasing frequency, graduate programs in the biomedical sciences are offering formalized training in the principles of responsible scientific conduct. Scientific Integrity, Fourth Edition covers essential topics related to the conduct of scientific investigation, such as guidelines, policies, standards, and codes and contains highly relevant interactive case studies. his textbook covers broad areas of scientific integrity and meets the needs of students T and scientists working in the biomedical sciences. Newly updated case studies that parallel the material presented in the chapters are included to illustrate the diversity of issues that have been identified under the umbrella of scientific integrity. All chapters have been thoroughly updated, especially with regard to the new technologies in data discovery and sharing, and the latest NIH and international best practices guidelines. 2014, 560pp., Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-5558-1661-2, £42.00 ASM PRess ■ Cases in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease, Fourth Edition Peter H. Gilligan, Daniel S. Shapiro, and Melissa Miller Cases in Medical Microbiology enables students to develop a working knowledge of the variety of microorganisms that cause infections in humans, and explains the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches that the clinical laboratory uses in assisting the physician in making infectious disease diagnoses. Questions are included to test knowledge in four broad areas: 1) the etiologic agent’s characteristics and laboratory diagnosis; 2) pathogenesis and clinical presentation; 3) epidemiology; and 4) prevention and, in some cases, drug resistance and treatment. The book serves as a valuable tool for students preparing for examination as well as for junior doctors during clinical infectious disease rotations. 2014, 620pp., Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-5558-1868-5, £55.00 ASM PRESS

This new textbook explains the science behind the uses of genetics and genomics in medicine today. It is not just about rare inherited and chromosomal disorders, but how genetics affects the whole spectrum of human health and disease. DNA technologies are explained, with emphasis on the modern techniques that have revolutionized the use of genetic information in medicine and are indicating the role of genetics in common diseases. Other new advances, such as the role of RNA and epigenetics are also included. The discussion on genetic approaches to treatment includes pharmacogenomics and the prospects for personalized medicine. Cancer is essentially a genetic disease and is given a dedicated chapter. There are extensive questions and problems for each chapter and clinical disorders are covered throughout.

—Dr. Richard Huxtable, Senior Lecturer, Deputy Director, Centre for Ethics in Medicine, University of Bristol, UK (about 100 Cases in Clinical Ethics and Law)
Making clinical decisions and choosing the best course of action is one of the most challenging and difficult parts of training to become a doctor. The 100 Cases Series provides a unique learning tool that guides students and junior clinicians through clinical cases, imitating those that they are likely to meet on the wards, in accident and emergency and outpatient departments, and in general practice. These cases will teach students and junior doctors to recognise important signs and symptoms—and, where appropriate, their relationship to other medical conditions—and to develop their diagnostic and management skills. Features: • Supplies 100 succinct and realistic case studies in a user-friendly format, describing patient histories and examinations • Provides questions at the end of each case to prompt readers to consider their options for diagnosis, investigation, and management • Includes answer pages to guide readers through the clinician’s sequence of thoughts and actions • Contains text boxes highlighting key points
