JAPAN’S POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE & TSUNAMI PINPOINT VULNERABILITIES IN GLOBAL COMMUNITY Portion of Book Sales of “Disaster Recovery and Resiliency” Donated to Red Cross by Publisher CRC Press Boca Raton, FL (March 22, 2011) – Once again nature’s fury has taken a toll in pain, suffering, and lives lost. And in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan a month ago, the international response was, rightly, swift and immediate. However, disasters of this magnitude often require an ongoing effort that will last far longer that initially anticipated. In recognition of this ongoing need, CRC Press will donate five dollars for every book sold of Community Disaster Recovery and Resiliency: Exploring Global Opportunities and Challenges to the American Red Cross relief efforts. While disasters have always been a part of the human experience, the earthquake, tsunami, and exposure to nuclear radiation will undoubtedly alter the course of life in Japan and around the world. Catastrophic events “provide valuable lessons about recovery, resiliency, and rebirth of the human spirit in places where we live, work, and rebuild communities,” says DeMond Miller, co-editor of Community Disaster Recovery and Resiliency.” These catastrophes illustrate the vulnerability that we as a global community face. “No country, no matter how industrialized or affluent, is set above or outside of the natural phenomena that continue to shape our world,” added co-editor Jason Rivera. At CRC Press we make an ongoing effort to contribute to organizations worldwide, not just in times of disaster but also in cases of ongoing need. Four weeks after the disasters that shook Japan, the rebuilding is just beginning and will require our continued support. Our philanthropic program keeps the world’s attention on these issues, this public responsibility is intrinsic to our mission to publish books that advance science and benefit humanity. “As Japan faces the aftermath of the worst earthquake in 100 years, they are at the forefront of our thoughts and the thoughts of the international community,” said John Lavender, senior vice president and publisher at CRC Press. “We are proud to offer support to our friends and colleagues on their road to recovery.” DeMond Miller has worked as principal investigator to facilitate research projects involving natural and human-induced ecological disasters, environmental issues, and community satisfaction. Jason Rivera’s research focuses on social vulnerability to natural and manmade disasters with an emphasis on minority experiences.
