So who is Cam The Artisan and what makes him unique? So, Cam The Artisan is this persona that was kind of in the back of my head as a child. I’ve always been a huge fan of art growing up. I’ve been a fan of different artistic mediums; video, fashion, music. So, I just put everything together in one persona and made it Cam The Artisan.

How does your music stand apart from all the noise? I mean, it’s genuine. It’s from the heart. I know this is kind of a general statement but I grew up listening to good music, quality music. Like I grew up on Prince, DeBarge, Michael Jackson, Commodores, and different people like that.

How would you describe your sound? Oh... this has always been a tricky question for me... I would say its more of a moody, kind of melodic, low-fi sound. Like even though I don’t make dark music I feel like I have a darker sound. Close comparisons that i’ve gotten recently are Smino, Saba, and Mick Jenkins. Yeah, I can kind of see that last one. It makes sense but it’s funny because its always people that I don’t normally listen too, like on a consistent basis. So it’s not like “oh he does his music like this, so I’m guna do my music exactly like that,” because I don’t really listen to them like that.

So, what is your process for writing a song? First step, I have to like the beat. I can’t write without a beat. Well, I can but it just doesn’t yield the same result. So after I get the beat together I start with the chorus, see what notes match according to the instrumental, then I just write what comes from the heart. It’ll usually take like two to three different studio sessions for me to finish a song because the first time I record, it’s usually not how I want it to sound. But once I go back home to my studio I realize I’m just singing in the wrong key or the inspiration I had when I first wrote it, I’m not feeling that way right now. So once I feel like that again I’ll go back and record. It’s all a process honestly, I don’t knock it because I believe in the process a lot.

Why does Cam The Artisan make music? That’s kind of a gimme. My sister makes music, my mom makes music, my dad makes music, my uncle makes music, my brother makes music… So it’s in the family, but its kind of deeper than that because I feel like it’s my drug. Like I know how people pop xans and pop molly to get a physical high, but making music gets me on an emotional and spiritual high.
