KURT BRERETON A True Map of Beecroft Headland (detail), 2015, oil on canvas
Kurt Brereton is a multidisciplinary artist, writer and academic. His extensive career has led him to exhibit his work not only around Australia but also around the globe. In fact, he has only recently come back from overseas where he had been exhibiting and did video performances. Upon his return we were fortunate enough to interview this fascinating character. Born into a family of outstanding artists, Kurt has developed the skills and sensitivity to connect the public with many of the inuences in his life. His is currently preparing his next exhibition, as well as working on other projects, which he outlined in his interview with us. Could you share with us some of your background? I am the third generation of artists in my family. My mother was a pioneer fibre artist; my father was a painter from Scotland. I grew up near Byron Bay in the 1960s and 70s and went to art school in Sydney. After graduating, I worked in theatre and as an academic at various universities in Sydney, Wollongong and Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Since childhood, I have worked across a wide range of media and performance. Different ideas call for specific media. You are an artist, designer, photographer, video maker, sound designer and write. You also have experience in acting and directing. How is it that you ended up being involved in so many artistic disciplines? Indeed, how have you managed to succeed in so many? Success for me means simply being able to keep creating what ever I want without the commercial pressure of the marketplace telling me what to produce and when. I have always been interested in the unique capabilities of different means of production. Creating art is a performance for me, and the tools (such as paint, words, sounds or film) are there to be employed on the stage, gallery, lecture room, book self or TV screen. Each medium is a language. For example, the sound of an apple being eaten verses a digital or painted apple, reveals something more about how we think and feel about apples. Of your artworks and/or exhibitions, do you have a favourite? My favourite is always the next show or book or video I am starting. So much of being an artist is concerned with process or way of life rather than end product. I recently visited one of your exhibitions in the Shoalhaven City Arts Centre, Test Results. I was quite moved by it. You produced these artworks while you were receiving medical treatment, the result of which would dictate your survival? How did art help? Faced with a year of a hot chemo cocktail of over 7000 pills and needles with a list of serious side effects longer than you left leg, I knew the only way I was going to survive was to treat my own personal episodes of Survivor as an art work. In other words, art therapy. Instead of keeping a video diary (my first thought), I chose to produce a number

of large abstract process painting or time-maps (chronographs) that recorded how I was feeling and coping day by day. I also wanted to write a book (Test Results) that critically addressed how virality acted in art and society. The medical industry is now using the book as a creative aid in their counselling programs. This was and unexpected yet welcomed consequence. I have since made the book a free e-book download. When will we see more of your work? I have a large solo exhibition booked in at the Shoalhaven Regional Art Centre for November next year. The title of the show, Biographs, is concerned with how we shape our personal identities in the face of life’s little and big dramas. My website kurtbrereton.com is also available 24/7. You have recently set up a new non-profit virtual art gallery for local artists in the Shoalhaven. What was your motivation? V-Space Gallery (v-spacegallery.org) will hopefully allow artist to showcase their work online free of the usual hassles and cost many on-line galleries set in place. I have the web-design, PR and gallery directing skills and a hosting server so I thought I could do my community service (only joking) for artists who are not able to produce websites themselves. I hope it will help profile artists of the region if people share V-Space Gallery via social media and word of mouth. If you were to interview a local artist, who would that be? I have been impressed with Timothy George, a young performance and installation artist who seems to be both seriously committed to art yet inoculated against humbug at the same time – a combination I find irresistible in an artist.
