Fashioned From The Inside Out Long ago, while struggling in the world of retail, pursuing my dream of becoming a part of the glamorous fashion world, I tried to stay abreast of all the hottest new designers and the couture labels in the fashion industry. I kept my closet loaded with each new hot trend; fashion was my world. After a few years of trying to stay up to speed on all the latest trends, all the while desperately failing as too many amazing pieces hung lonely in my closet without any exposure to the outside world, I finally realized that I hated most of the trendy clothes I’d once boasted so much about. I did not want to wear the latest “la-dee-da” from “so and so”. I wanted to wear my jeans (designer of course), t-shirt, and comfy, yet stylish, heels, usually in a monochromatic color scheme. Isn’t that what being fashionable is really all about? Not caring about looking like ‘her’ or ‘them’, but feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin, or rather, in your own clothes? The women who really knew who they were were the ones I considered a joy to work with. Those women were the ones who I discovered new energy with to sashay across the store to look for the perfect ‘look’ until the prize outfit was identified, purchased, wrapped, and flung into the car. It didn’t matter what the latest trend was. What mattered was who they were….on the insidehow they felt and what they thought was beautiful, comfortable, and worth the investment.
We’re also excited to introduce a brand new section for our 20-something chicks, appropriately called, The 20-Something Diaries. You’ll laugh, cry and totally recognize yourself…if you’re in your 20’s. Our 20-something writer brings real life stories to our pages and encourages those that are in the same stage of life how to live life out to the fullest as they grow together. (20-something Diaries, Pg.54) In Back to Basics, we’re helping you get back on the right track of identifying your fashion style, dreams, and more. From a few basic wardrobe essentials to getting ahead in the work place, we’re taking a look at some of the first lessons we learned in life and applying them to where we are today. Our hope is that by getting back to the basics, we’ll help you realize, once again, some of life’s basic lessons you once knew but have simply overlooked for a while.
These days, I shudder when I hear women say the dreadful words, ‘I hate fashion’, or ‘I don’t care about fashion’, because the truth is, they’ve actually already chosen a fashion style. That’s for certain! They just don’t realize it. So whether you identify with the laid back style of Jennifer Aniston, like I do, are a fashion risk taker like Katie Perry, or love the effortless look of Nicole Richie’s bohemian style, stay true to who you are (Girl on the Street Pg.8). Having to buy clothes should not be the biggest stress of your week, but should be one that is effortless because you only have to be yourself. And that is beautiful! Enjoy becoming and being the woman you were created to be!

Fashion is a simple reflection of who you are on the inside (Well Woman Pg. 28), just like the place you call home. Whether it be a bedroom, dorm room, apartment, or house (Fashion Feature pg. 36 ), it’s the clothes that make you feel like you! In this issue, we’re taking you back to the basics, which every so often is a necessity in every area of our life. In marriage, we sometimes have to remember our vows we promised on the first day of our marriage. With our friends or co-workers, there are moments we have to remember what our parents taught us, ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all” (Special Feature Pg.32 & Inside Out Pg.60). There are also moments in life when we have to remember what our dreams were as a little girl and start pursing the dreams we may have lost along the way (The Created Woman Pg.44). In our fashion choices, we simply have to remember who we are and what we like, not what everyone else thinks.

In this back-to-basics issue, we want to focus on the heart of becoming the woman you were created to be and could think of no better person to inspire and empower you than Lynette Lewis.
What is the strategy for living out our dreams?
A
Pressures and busy jobs can really overshadow our aspirations. Tiredness and discouragement can virtually shut us down. Stepping into new adventures will help. I moved to NYC at age 37 only knowing one person in the city. I wondered if I was making a huge mistake, but it turned out to be the best move, professionally and personally. It wasn’t without fear and included a big cut in pay, but it was worth the risk to experience my dream of living in the Big Apple.
n accomplished business woman, author and consultant, Lynette is equipping women with the tools they need to live lives of hope and overcome every challenge on the way to their dreams. While reading Lynette’s book, Climbing the Ladder in Stilettos, Created Woman founder Heather Frierson laid the groundwork for the vision that guides each issue of this magazine.
Climbing the Ladder, I provide an exercise for articulating your purpose. It’s something I think everyone should work through. Knowing your purpose is like having a compass that points you to the people, projects, and things that you will enjoy most.
We had the opportunity to ask Lynette some questions and are thrilled to share her practical, proven wisdom with you.
Knock on every door that interests you, meet all the influencers you can, act confident until you feel it, embrace whatever you get at first and then morph it into something you love. My first job seemed to be totally disconnected to my bigger dreams. In hindsight, that job was about the people I was meeting, many of whom I still work with today.
What is the key to a successful life and career? Success is an interesting term; it means different things to different people. To me, fulfillment and meaning are more worthy pursuits than success. This comes from knowing your purpose and then living your dreams. How do you discover your dreams? Discovering your dreams is a process, not one specific event. In the first chapter of

What would you say to the college graduate who is out there searching for her first job?
How do we capitalize on the feeling “ there must be something more for me”? Dream outside your job description in your free time. Invent the next move that will take you to the place you really want to go. Don’t wait for permission; go for it!
There are many strategies, but the practical tool I always use is called the “1-1-1 Strategy,” which means you take one step, once a week, toward one of your dreams. If you take 52 steps a year toward a dream, you WILL achieve it. We all have time to take one step once a week. So no more excuses! Did you ever find yourself distracted or facing an obstacle to pursuing your dreams?
How do we endure those seemingly endless seasons of waiting for a dream to come pass? When one dream is on hold, go live another! Engage in others’ dreams and focus on the things you are receiving now versus all the things you’re waiting for. Days are long but life is short and we often miss the scenery because we’re so focused on the destination. Having friends is a huge help too–people we can laugh with, vacation with and spend time enjoying life with! Don’t lose hope. I would rather be a woman who is hopeful, even if my dreams remain unfulfilled, than a woman who is complacent, not caring one way or another because believing is just too risky.
What about those women who say “I’m too practical to dream”? Dreams bring joy and zest to our regular routines. They add new energy and enliven our hearts. We need to be practical about doing our dreams but never too practical to dream! Share a memorable “aha” moment: For 30 years I dreamed of being married. After our wedding, I realized there were still dreams and ideas to be pursued. The danger in focusing on one dream is thinking, “When this comes to pass, THEN I’ll be fulfilled.” That’s not true. Fulfillment is comprised of many things. No one person or achievement will ever be the final trump card.

THE QUARTER LIFE CRISIS

When venting recently about this to a friend, she sarcastically replied, “Oh right, because you have your degree, own a business, have a great job, and are married.” Oh. While I did not want to agree with her at the time, she was right. It’s all about the perspective. I suppose the quarter-life crisis is induced by realizing, for the first time in life, we are adults. We have made decisions that permanently impact our future. No longer are mom and dad to blame. In realizing this, we must choose whether we are satisfied or disappointed in our decisions. Six months into this quarter-life crisis, I am realizing it isn’t a crisis at all, just the reckoning of, what John Mayer says, that “stirring in our souls.”

ince high school, I have had my life mapped out. I knew I wanted to move to New York, to write for a magazine, and maybe someday own a business. I did not imagine a wedding, children, or settling down. Ever. Twenty-five has always been far down the line and all of my goals were limited by that magic number. I always said, “When I’m twenty-five, I know for sure I will have finished school, will

be a published author, will have a successful business...” and so on. Yet here I am, six months into twenty-five, still giving myself the same pep talks I did when I was seventeen. I was thinking on this a few weeks ago and immediately a song came to mind. It was John Mayer, singing about this very feeling, the one that dominates the plot of ‘Why Georgia.’ That relatable sinking feeling when you wonder if all you have done up to this point will equate to
the happiness you have longed for all the while. Will the sacrifices pay off? Will skipping New York for a walk down the aisle be worth it in ten years? Will I find a job that minimizes the panic I feel when I look at my debt? I did not even think about the so-called “quarter-life crisis,” it just so happened that all of my hopes fell into that time frame. Twenty-five was my mirage and now that I’m standing in the middle of it, I feel like there is a hollowness where my seventeen year old self saw so many possibilities.
