FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
This month, the Doncaster Policing Team talks to us about how you can join the force and make a real difference to your community
A career with South Yorkshire Police is the chance for you to take on a challenge that will change lives. Whether you’re a school leaver, a graduate or searching for new opportunities, we welcome applications from all backgrounds and communities. There are three different entry routes as part of our Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF), which you can take to join the police.
If you don’t have a degree:
You can earn as you learn, and complete the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Over three years you’ll combine on-the-job learning and academic theory to become a police constable with a degree in Professional Policing Practice.
If you already have a degree:
The Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP) combines a work-based programmed and off-thejob learning as you spend two years being a police officer and probationer. After completion, you’ll achieve a graduate diploma in Professional Policing Practice.
South Yorkshire Police offers two DHEP courses - one for those who want to be a Police Constable and one for those who want to be a Detective.
We hold regular virtual recruitment events, where you can find out more about the role, speak to officers already doing the job and learn about the academic theory involved. Applications are open until 31 August 2022 for our DHEP.
If you want to study first:
You can undertake a three-year degree in Professional Policing at your own expense and then apply to become a police officer. During your course, there may be an option for you to join as a special constable.
Be the future of going for it
Whether you’re a young school-leaver, a retailer or ex-military, we know that you will have plenty of transferable skills which you can bring to a career with the police. Things like following process, social and emotional intelligence, conversation skills and the ability to diffuse a situation are all skills we search for in our candidates. If you have the relevant experience and strengths, all you have to do is apply. We are an organisation that welcome, support and value those from underrepresented communities. From difference comes invaluable life experiences, ideas and ways of thinking – and by encouraging individuality we are working towards serving our communities and understanding our public better.
