group taking Howden by storm!
A group has been set up, through Facebook, where women can meet up, have a chat and make new friends. The group aims to be a place where women can discuss their ideas and thoughts on a variety of issues as well as regularly meet up to do something exciting
Set up by Georgette Jarvis, the idea came from Georgette wanting to make friends after moving to Howden from the South of England. Our Goole chatted to Georgette to find out more about the group. She told us: “I found that when I first moved here I was meeting new people, but I wasn’t making friends with whom I could spend my
Page 20 free time with. “So I put a post on the Facebook page ‘Howden Community Board’ and asked if any other like-minded women would be interested in going out and making new friends. I expected a few replies but was amazed as more and more ladies joined in.” This was when ‘Howden Ladies’ was formed, and since
its launch on January 11th, the group has 178 members and is still growing. Georgette added: “It just goes to show how many women are out there who would love to make new friends and build a community spirit. We have a diverse selection of women from all walks of life, but we all have something in common in that we all feel a little lonely and isolated sometimes.
Page 21 Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. Call 01405 819141. “We may not all be into the same things, but someone will share your passions and interests and be able to offer support and mutual friendship. “So, if you would like to branch out and try something new - be it for chats, friendly support, cake, crafts, advice, coffee and cake, exercise, singing, days out and cake - join the group.” The Facebook group is used to swap ideas and reach out to people with various other issues. Events such as walks, cinema trips and drinks are organised through the group with the social events growing in size. Georgette added: “I hope that the group will give us a chance to make changes to our lives and feel more like we are part of the community, improve our mental health and empower each other. “The idea is to get out of the house, make new friends and experience new things together. “Howden Ladies, although a group, is not constrained to a weekly meeting where activities are all planned and agendas are set. It is inclusive; however, people are free to arrange their own events without having to involve absolutely everyone. It is more about companionship and widening the social circle of women who want to go out for a coffee, a walk or a night out but don’t necessarily have someone to go with. “Recently the ladies met up at the Masonic Hall on Selby Road, Howden, just three days after the group was formed and the turnout was great”. So if you like the sound of this group and want to make new friends, find ‘Howden Ladies’ on Facebook where there are several like-minded ladies like yourself ready to start a new adventure!
This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green talks to us about how making time for your employees will help the success of your business The importance of having a skilled workforce
There is a saying you have probably heard before: “You don’t build a business, you build people and then people build the business.” This is true but the question is then asked “What happens if we invest in developing our people and they then leave us?” The reply should be “What happens if we don’t invest in them and they stay?” Employees are the most important asset to your business. Their professional development and training should be put into your budgets when doing the finances. When you invest in an employee they feel valued and appreciated and are less likely to leave you. From a business perspective, upskilling employees can improve productivity and therefore the growth of your business. Think about the future needs of your business and not just the current ones. Give consideration to wider skills in the context of things like changes in legislation and even the skills required if you operate in an overseas market. For further help and advice on the above or business growth and funding opportunities contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@ selby.gov.uk or telephone 01757 292332.

Are you thinking about a career in construction? This month the Jobcentre tells us about the Open Doors event taking place that will have all the information you need OPEN DOORS Get into Construction
Open Doors aims to inspire more people to get into the construction industry by letting them go ‘behind the scenes’ to discover the diverse and rewarding range of career paths the industry has to offer, as well as changing people’s perceptions of construction.
How do I find out more about a career in construction? If you’re interested in a career in construction more information on different roles, qualifications and a range of case studies can be found on the construction careers website Go Construct.
When will Open Doors take place? The next Open Doors event will take place from Monday 16 - Saturday 21 March 2020 which you can book now. Please visit opendoors.construction/ visitors#register-your-interest to register your interest.
Page 30 How do I book my site visit? You will need to log in to your account to book which will be created when you make your first booking. You can use the same account to book others. What will happen during my site visit? You will get the opportunity to see a project, office, or factory, and meet the people who work in the industry. And, of course, if you have any specific requests or interests please mention them when booking. Can you tell me about access for visitors with disabilities? The information page for each individual site will clearly state disability access. Can large groups attend? We encourage groups of all sizes, however, due to some site restrictions larger groups may not always be possible. Please check the individual site’s information page for further information. And the earlier you book, the easier it will be to accommodate you. How long will the site visit last? An estimated duration can be found on the site’s page, but this will vary from site to site. Can I attend more than one site? Yes absolutely! Just remember you will need to book each one. Do I need to wear anything special? We would recommend you wear sensible shoes and clothing as you will be walking around the site. Bring some waterproof clothing just in case! Health and safety clothing will be provided by the construction company. Open Doors is open to 11-18 year-olds, educators, careers advisors, adults, career changers, parents and guardians.
