This evening we celebrate the Gallery’s Centennial Anniversary and remember its founder Emily Sibley Watson, who had long sought an art museum for the edification and enjoyment of the citizens of Rochester. In founding the Memorial Art Gallery, she helped define and shape the extraordinary cultural strength and richness of this city. We also remember the remarkable 50-year leadership of the Herdle family: George Herdle, the Gallery’s first director; Gertrude Herdle Moore, the Gallery’s second and longest-serving director; and Isabel Herdle, the Gallery’s associate director. And we remember the thousands of Gallery friends whose support and leadership have helped establish one of the finest regional art museums in the country. You are part of this “Gallery Family” and, with us this evening, will remember the past and celebrate the future. Enjoy this very special anniversary.

Be
Charmed. . .
Celebrate 100 years with MAG’s exclusive Centennial Charms Collection—a limited-edition collection available for the first time at tonight’s 100 Year Gala. Designed by students at RIT’s School for American Crafts, the charms honor those who make the Gallery strong. Taylor Edwards, Kimberly (Kima) Enerson, Chelsea Fay and Yue (Yuxi) Lu created five charms inspired by these works in the Gallery collection: • MAG’s original emblem/lappet of lace acquired in 1913 (in honor of members & donors) • Teke necklace from central Africa (in honor of staff) • Todd McGrain’s sculpture Passenger Pigeon (in honor of docents & visitors) • Fritz Trautmann’s painting Galaxy (in honor of Creative Workshop teachers & students) • ancient Greek Wreath of Oak Leaves (in honor of volunteers) Special thanks to RIT professor Leonard Urso for coordinating the project. The charms are created in precious metals with gemstones by Richards & West custom jewelry designers. 7

P erformers After Hours The University of Rochester’s coed a cappella group was created in 1998 as a vocal jazz ensemble and redefined itself in 2000 to incorporate a wider spectrum of music. Since then, the group has evolved further, developing a more distinct style and energy and vast repertoire of songs that includes both classic oldies and top-charting pop hits. For more information visit www.urafterhours.org.
David “Mr. Bippy” Boyer Since 1994, noted local artist Mr. Bippy has been teaching about cartooning and drawing to kids and adults in New York, Nevada and Japan, as well as creating party and gift caricatures. For more information on his “caricatures that flatter… not shatter” visit www.bippies.com.
Cente nnial Jazz Trio Created especially for tonight, our jazz musicians will be led by Bob De Rosa and will entertain gala guests at the Genesee Valley Club and greet guests in the Memorial Art Gallery McDonald Family Plaza.
Eastman School of Music Sacred Music Program The organ study program has been extraordinary since the founding of the school. Organ students are prepared rigorously for multifaceted careers as church musicians, teachers and concert performers. The school’s alumni are leaders of the organ world, holding a large number of the country’s important church and university positions. For more information: www.esm.rochester.edu. This evening’s performers include Annie Laver, ESM faculty member and EROI Festival director; Naomi Gregory, Advanced Doctor of Musical Arts/PhD student from the UK; and Malcolm Matthews, Master of Music student.
Lacey Lee Born in St. Louis, Lacey Lee came to western New York to attend the Eastman School of Music. Lacey aspires to expand and challenge the perception of the harp as a strictly classical instrument. Though rooted in classical training, she has developed a modern-folk style in which she sings while accompanying herself on her electric harp. Lacey’s latest CD is titled You & Me!. For more information on Lacey Lee and her music visit www.laceyleeharp.com.
Midnight Ramblers The Midnight Ramblers is an award-winning, all-male, contemporary a cappella group based at the University of Rochester. Since its creation 15 years ago, the group has been composed of self-organized and self-directed undergraduate students. It is the first undergraduate organization to sponsor a scholarship for incoming students at the University and continues to produce awardwinning and nationally recognized CDs. For more information visit www.midnightramblers.org.
Twilight Band For more than 25 years, Twilight Band has been entertaining audiences of all ages. Known for an incredibly varied repertoire, Twilight delights and engages with dance music for everyone both young and old—from disco, Motown and R&B to big band and jazz. Their 6–16 piece band has wowed audiences throughout the US and abroad. For more information visit www.twilightentertainment.biz. 23
