ARTISTS’ SHOWCASE Tight Modern is a touring miniature replica of London’s iconic Tate Modern, showcasing 80+ under-represented artists in what we believe is the world’s smallest pop-up gallery. The 2016-17 tour was a huge success, visiting Portsmouth, Redbridge, St Helens Merseyside and Brighton—seen by an estimated 150,000 people and featured on BBC South and ITV Meridian. Many thanks to all the artists who entered, our sponsors and partners. We’re currently planning the 17-18 Tight Modern Award Winners Tour. As a result of reduced resources, we are unable to host a national competition this year, but you can still vote for which Award Winners you think should win the professional development prizes on offer. Watch out for the Award Winners Tight Modern tour coming near you soon! Keep up to date and sign up to our newsletter at:

MEET
THE ARTIST Maria Amidu
Maria Amidu is interested in the social relationships between people mediated by things, usually objects and places. She is drawn to what is hidden, obscured and less obvious in varying historical and contemporaneous collective situations and makes works to try and substantiate these lived experiences. Maria pays particular attention to the debates around social practice and the role visual art plays in activating change. She is interested in the lines drawn between arts practices that are motivated by and dependent on encounters and relationships with people, and practices that are not. She also worries/ wonders about the limitations and boundaries intrinsic to art making whilst simultaneously, embracing its ideologies and unknowns. Maria is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, and exhibited nationally and internationally before pursuing a social practice. She has developed projects with a number of museums, galleries and organisations, including the Houses of Parliament, National Maritime Museum Greenwich, People United, Turner Contemporary, PEER, A New Direction, Parramatta Artists’ Studios, the V&A, Arnolfini, Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital, Iniva, the Foundling Museum, Hackney Museum, Metropolitan Archives, Horniman Museum & Gardens, and the 198 Gallery. Her work is in a number of collections, including the Pilkington Collection at the V&A Museum, London; the Arnolfini Collection Trust, Bristol; and the National Drawing Collection, Limerick. She has won a wide range of fellowships, grants and awards. For more info, visit www.mariaand.co Fee: Date: Time: Venue:

MEET
THE WRITER Alan Morrison
Poetry has been a means of self-expression for Alan for over twenty years; it has been a medium through which he has been able to explore and try and make sense of his own obsessional mind, while also confronting in poetry some of the most challenging social and political themes of the times. Alan will talk about how the personal and the political have always sparred in his poetry; of how the most authentic occupation he ever had was as a voluntary poetry workshop tutor in a psychiatric hospital; of the conflict between poetic occupation and conventional employment, and the 'occupational hazard' for many poets of intermittent or even long-term unemployment. He will read from his latest collection, Tan Raptures, which is themed around the welfare cuts and their catastrophic effects. Alan Morrison is the author of several critically acclaimed poetry collections which include A Tapestry of Absent Sitters (Waterloo Press, 2009), Keir Hardie Street (Smokestack Books, 2010), Captive Dragons (Waterloo Press, 2011), Blaze a Vanishing/The Tall Skies (Waterloo Press, 2013), Shadows Waltz Haltingly (Lapwing, 2015) and Tan Raptures (Smokestack Books, 2017). He is editor of The Recusant (www.therecusant.org.uk). He edited two ground-breaking anti-austerity anthologies, Emergency Verse - Poetry in Defence of the Welfare State (2011) and The Robin Hood Book - Verse Versus Austerity (2012). His poetry has been awarded grants from the Arts Council, the Royal Literary Fund and the Society of Authors. For more about Alan, see www.alanmorrison.co.uk Fee: Date: Time: Venue:

MEET
THE ARTIST Aidan Moesby As an artist, curator and writer, Aidan’s work is underpinned through conversations as practice-based research: real, overheard, visual, imagined, or virtual. At the intersection of the visual arts, wellbeing and increasingly, technology, he uses the locations he occupies as a ‘Live Laboratory’ to research, develop, test and make work. Site or context-specific interventions serve as a catalyst for a socially-engaged conversation and personal or communal exploration. Discussions provide the core for the curation of public events, seminars and forums to specifically engage a non-art audience and explore the work in a wider context. This diversification and cross-pollination is integral to his overall practice. Aidan is particularly concerned with language: literally in text-based pieces, objects as metaphor and the emotional and psychological language of spaces and location. He regularly participates in panel discussions, presents at conferences, guest lectures, and trains and facilitates groups and discussions. Aidan will talk about his development as an artist from someone with no previous experience of making art to his current practice. He will discuss how developing sustainable long term relationships with organisations has been key to his practice rather than short term discrete works. His practice is made up of several strands with an overarching unifying context within arts, health and technology. How do we manage this and keep the plates spinning? Making art is a small part of being an artist unless you have a studio with other people to manage things to allow you to just make work. With so many demands and so little time how do we know what to focus on? For more info, visit www.aidanmoesby.co.uk Fee: Date: Time: Venue:
