FOREWORD

My name is Izzy and I became an #iwill Ambassador in 2019. I started doing social action when I was in Year 1 at school as I wanted to join my school council so my voice could be heard. I had to do a speech in front of the other children in my class and I got chosen to represent them. I was a school councillor and an eco-monitor and was part of a campaign to get more children walking to school or using bicycles. I am passionate about the environment and have been campaigning for a plastic free world by writing to organisations like First News who used to send their newspaper in a plastic bag but now use a compostable lining made out of potato starch. I have also lived plastic free for a week, which was really difficult! Doing social action lets me speak to many new people who I would not have spoken to otherwise. I have found it interesting to hear about others’ life stories. I have learnt how to talk to many different people and improved my social skills. I now know how to start conversations and how to show people empathy and compassion. I think other children should get involved in social action because we have an impact on people’s lives; even though we are young we can still help. Birmingham is such a diverse city - it is great to live here. The city gives young people lots of exciting opportunities to get involved in different social action projects and make a difference. WHAT IS YOUTH SOCIAL ACTION?

Youth social action is practical action in the service of others to create positive change. It provides an important mechanism for young people to develop and express their character while benefiting others. Incorporating a range of activities – including volunteering for a charity, caring for someone in their community, providing peer support online, campaigning or fundraising for a specific cause – it can take place in both formal and informal settings. Social action should be challenging, youth-led (although often adult facilitated), socially impactful, progressive, embedded, and reflective. Young people’s social action should not start from a deficit model: many young people are already active and engaged, and many more would be engaged if appropriate support and guidance were in place. Social action, therefore, should be celebrated for its transformational possibilities – both for young people and their communities – and should be acknowledged as a right of every young person.

CHARACTER AND YOUTH SOCIAL ACTION IN BIRMINGHAM

The Birmingham Character and Youth Social Action Group formed in late 2018 intent to shine a spotlight on the good practice and research taking place in Birmingham and the West Midlands with regards character development and youth social action. The Group has a shared vision of harnessing the good that engaging young people in social action can bring, both in terms of individual character development and wider societal flourishing. The Group is non-exclusive and encourages all schools, providers, researchers and others with a wider interest in the benefits of character and social action to engage with it, locally and nationally. The Group seeks to create an established network of both providers and opportunities across the Birmingham area that young people can engage with as part of their individual and collective youth social action and character development journeys. What are the benefits of engaging in youth social action? This brochure aims to champion the good practice taking place across Birmingham and highlight the key benefits that engaging in youth social action can bring. The Birmingham Character and Youth Social Action Group is a diverse and varied Group of providers, researchers, and those with vested interests in the development of young people in Birmingham. Although not intended as an exhaustive list, the below benefits of social action are defined and explored through examples of the activities that Group members provide. Find out more about each member of the Group and what they do at the back of this brochure on page 18. Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust NHS resources are scarce and all of us need to do our best to choose the right service for us. Young people are more conscious than ever of how to be efficient with scarce resources. In partnership with the Birmingham and Solihull Sustainability and Transformation Partnership and Birmingham Education Partnership, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust has identified over 100 young people, aged 10-16, with an interest in sharing health messages, to join Junior Volunteering projects. Visiting Emergency Rooms near them, they will learn about the pressures on NHS Services and how they can support alleviating some pressure by helping their friends and family ‘choose wisely’ when they use their pharmacies, GPs, NHS 111 or walk-in clinics effectively. The schools involved were especially invited from areas where there is a high level of paediatric A&E usage. This project showcases the Junior Volunteering programme born at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital now rolling out to other Trusts and organisations in Birmingham.

Birmingham Education Partnership Birmingham Education Partnership (BEP) is committed to enabling schools to become emotionally supportive and resilient communities for all of their pupils and is working with the NHS, Public Health, Local Authority, Forward Thinking Birmingham, the Voluntary Sector, and other strategic partners to shape the future mental health provision for schools in Birmingham. The NewStart programme, funded by the NHS, is BEP’s pilot programme to influence mainstream secondary school systems in the city. The NewStart programme is currently working with 19 secondary schools in Birmingham, using a whole school approach to help schools identify earlier those pupils who may be vulnerable to poor mental health and build resilience in order to improve academic, social and emotional outcomes. As a result of the project, schools have: • introduced Mindfulness techniques for year 11’s and form time • developed methods for earlier identification of students displaying signs of potential anxiety • established Young Wellbeing Leaders who are empowered to develop resilience across the school • recognised that participating in clubs or extra-curricular activities is ‘an essential’

Birmingham Education Partnership TWINNING SCHOOLS BEP delivers projects that build cohesion, mobility and engagement through a variety of channels and unique partnerships. Over the 2019-2020 academic year, with a particular focus on Twinning schools across the city, BEP will be running pilot projects involving a number of schools. The pilots will lead to the development of a framework for twinning that will be made available to all schools in the future; bringing people together from different schools provides an opportunity to share problems, exchange views and understand different viewpoints on any issue where there is a shared interest or concern. The Twinning School pilot is an exciting and effective way of helping students to develop new understanding and knowledge of Birmingham as a vibrant city and their role within it. BEP believes that by providing positive learning opportunities and meaningful interactions, students will be encouraged to explore their role as learners and as active citizens. Through joint curricular work and a focus on student leadership and social action, the project aims to widen perspectives, challenge attitudes and values and ultimately build character.

A COMMUNITY CINEMA SPARKBROOK BEP facilitated a community cinema at Nelson Mandela Community Primary in Sparkbrook to great success. Local school children organised and funded the community cinema, selling popcorn and other snacks, and creating ‘VIP’ seats. The project reached its breakeven point by the second cinema showing and the children leading the project have grand plans for continuing it again in the future. The profit that the community cinema has made has enabled the pupils to go further and create more opportunities. They have designed anti-litter posters, run extra-curricular clubs and activities for mums and their children to give them more opportunities to spend quality time together, and generally sought to improve their local environment and local families’ wellbeing. After conducting research in the area, the pupils also set about addressing a lack of opportunities in the local area specifically for mums to engage with their children and organised a series of regular activities funded by their social enterprise cinema.

Birmingham Education Partnership CHILD-LED SOCIAL ENTERPRISE SOLUTIONS FOR LOCAL COMMUNITIES

BEP supports other organisations in creating positive impact on children and young people in Birmingham. Six schools across Birmingham and Smethwick took part in a Social Enterprise in Primary Schools pilot, which was delivered and funded by iSE, along with USE-IT! and UIA, an initiative of the European Regional Development Fund. Each school focused on improving lives in their communities and emphasised the character strengths of creativity, determination and social awareness.

EXAMPLE OF A SCHOOL-LED PROJECT IN HANDSWORTH

The children at James Watt School in Handsworth created ‘presents’ for their fellow pupils who were staying in temporary accommodation - a difficult situation that affects physical and mental health. Often families are housed in B&B’s, one family to a room with very few toys or learning materials. The children decorated boxes and packed them with notebooks, pens, pencils and small gifts. Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust The Junior Volunteering (ages 10 - 16) and Young Adult Volunteering (ages 16 - 25) programmes run by Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust seek to enable participants to become familiar with the range of jobs in an NHS Trust, to learn about a specific area of healthcare and address a challenge in that area. With a strong focus on widening participation, both programmes share the long-term aims of raising participants’ aspirations, encouraging greater diversity and local representation in the applicant pool for NHS jobs; and engendering a lifetime commitment to social action. For Young Adult Volunteers the programme provides a wide experience of the hospital; they complete three different roles over six months, ensuring they build their confidence, knowledge and self-reliance as they progress and a significant number of `graduates’ have remained involved in hospital volunteering. “What a shift!. … I heard of a parent that had received some bad news which was difficult to hear but I think in turn that made me realise how amazing the staff are and how much I want to be a part of the NHS. I can’t thank you enough for this opportunity it has been phenomenal.” - Young Adult Volunteer In its first funded year, the Junior Volunteering programme engaged 26 schools/organisations; as well as the impact on the patients and families, the projects have helped to broaden the horizons and raise the aspirations of 200+ young volunteers. After volunteering, 171 of 173 respondents agreed or strongly agreed that they had a better understanding of what goes on in a hospital and 120 agreed or strongly agreed that they would consider working in a hospital in the future.

On 17th July 2019, with support from Beatfreeks’ micro-campaign funding, FUEL, 19-year-old Ayan Aden ran a march from the Department for Education down to Parliament Square in London as part of the #JusticeForShukriAbdi campaign. Ayan heard about the Greater Manchester Police’s decision to categorise Shukri Abdi’s death as accidental following a very brief investigation. She felt so passionately that this decision was wrong, that she decided to apply to FUEL for funding to pay for a coach full of people from Birmingham to travel down to London to fight for a fairer inquest into Shukri’s death and get justice for her mother and family. Primarily it was Ayan and 2 other girls based in Birmingham who decided a march needed to happen so they took it upon themselves to create action. As well as taking people down to London from Birmingham, they were also joined by protesters from London, Sheffield, and Manchester who heard about the march through social media, altogether inspiring a 300 people strong protest. Ayan liaised with various news outlets, and the

campaign received traction in the Guardian, BBC News, Observer and prominent people such as George Galloway made public comments on the case. Ayan’s passion and commitment to this cause has pressurised the authorities to carry out a full investigation into what happened to Shukri Abdi in December this year. An amazing success! Ayan was really nervous about taking this campaign on as she had never done anything like it before, but seeing the impact this protest has made, she has been encouraged to use her voice again in the future and feels passionately that young people should feel empowered to raise their voices when they feel something is wrong or unfair.

Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues The Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues has examined how youth social action, defined as practical action in the service of others to create positive change, can be an important mechanism for the development of young people’s character. The research has further explored what a habit of service – where someone has taken part in service in the past 12 months and is very likely to continue participating in future – looks like in young people. The Jubilee Centre’s research has found that those young people who were first involved in service under the age of 10 were more than two times more likely to have developed a habit of service than those who first participated after turning 16. Engaging in meaningful social action can have a recognised ‘double benefit’ to both the recipient of the social action and the individual undertaking it. The ‘double benefit’ has become a recognised term across the third sector, with many funders, policymakers, providers, and young people acknowledging how engaging in youth social action can develop one’s character, as well as benefit society. 14 Developing Character

The Jubilee Centre has worked alongside the #iwill campaign since 2013 to recognise the character benefits social action brings to young people, identifying the key character virtues that #iwill Ambassadors have developed through their service. From the Jubilee Centre’s research between 2012 – 2017 recommendations have been drawn for ways in which those educating young people can support their participation in social action, these include: promoting opportunities, dedicating specific days to service projects and sharing stories of those who have benefited from social action. The Jubilee Centre’s Statement on Youth Social Action and Character Development sets out the importance of recognising the double benefit that social action provides and identifies the key qualities of social action opportunities that enable young people to develop, express and reflect on their character to the fullest. Research conducted by the Jubilee Centre has demonstrated that social action providers see character development as fundamental to their organisation’s work in helping young people, and societies, to flourish.

UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM SCHOOL

The University of Birmingham School is dedicated to the character development of its pupils and its staff and, since opening in 2015, has created distinct, rich and varied curriculum and enrichment programmes that provides all pupils with opportunities to become active, high performing and engaged citizens. The school endeavours to develop rounded individuals who demonstrate gratitude, compassion, integrity and resilience and who take responsibility for their actions. A unique aspect of the School is its implementation of an extended school day through which it delivers a school-wide enrichment programme; this programme enables all students, regardless of background or achievement, to engage in social action opportunities and experience participating in something meaningful as part of their education. The enrichment initiatives that the school offers form a core part of the school day – everyone takes part and receives the chance to try new things each term, from a choice of over 30 activities (some examples include knitting, British Military Fitness, ultimate frisbee, henna hand-painting). The school provides Sixth Form students with the opportunity to lead or support an enrichment activity, participate in and organise social action projects and work experience placements, to further develop their character and engage with the world around them. BEATFREEKS is a movement of people and companies using creativity to empower people to challenge themselves and the

world they find themselves in. Predominantly working with young people aged 16-30, it is passionate about supporting young people to have their voices heard and influence change. Beatfreek’s Brum Youth Trends annual report explores young people’s experience of Birmingham to try and understand how best their voices can best be amplified; through its work over the last 6 years, Beatfreeks has supported over 20,000 young people in the city.

BIRMINGHAM EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP is a charity whose mission is to secure a deeply good academic, social and

civic education for every child and young person living in Birmingham. BEP was established in 2013 to unite the whole family of Birmingham schools, to harness their collective strengths and to support partnership working. Recognising that it takes a whole city to raise a child and that schools need to be rooted in locality, BEP champions working with all those who support and develop Birmingham’s young people. All primary and secondary schools in Birmingham are part of the BEP network.

BIRMINGHAM WOMEN’S AND CHILDREN’S NHS FOUNDATION TRUST formed in 2017 as part of a commitment to

provide world class, high quality health care to women, children and families in the Birmingham and West Midlands region, and beyond. The hospitals receive more than 641,000 visits per year and are staffed by a 6,000 strong team. The Trust received #iwill funding in 2018 to expand its volunteer programme and engage young people in social action projects in the hospitals and help young people’s voices be heard in hospital decision making processes.

DOIT.LIFE is the UK’s national digital volunteer matching service. In 2012, the charity Do It Trust was funded by DCMS in response

to the need for a national volunteer matching platform and created do-it.org.uk. Now used regularly by more than 40,000 charities and VCO’s across the country to connect with people that want to volunteer, Do-it has enabled more than 30 million hours of volunteering to date. The platform, which has been successfully piloted with cities, large employers and a variety of national umbrella groups, features a national database of things to do - including volunteering, social action, cultural events, sports/leisure and learning based experiences - and aims to enable people to realise their full potential and purpose.

THE JUBILEE CENTRE FOR CHARACTER AND VIRTUES is a unique and leading centre for the examination of how

character and virtues impact on individuals and society. The Centre was founded in 2012 by Professor James Arthur and is based at the University of Birmingham. It offers world-class research on the importance of developing good character and virtues and the benefits they bring to individuals and society. In undertaking its own innovative research, the Centre also seeks to partner with leading academics from other universities around the world and to develop strong strategic partnerships.

WE SCHOOLS is a unique, four step programme that challenges young people to identify the local and global issues that spark

their passion, then empowers them with the tools to take action. Through the WE Schools programme, resources and social action campaigns, students can further their curricular learning and develop the life skills for success. With funding received from the #iwill Fund, WE Schools now has the support to work in-depth with 200 schools in Birmingham and across the Midlands to create a whole school approach to the WE Schools programme and social action.
