Preface
MENU is a Scandinavian design brand with a simple purpose: to make the world more beautiful, less complicated, and a little bit nicer to wake up to. Since 1978, we have harnessed the skills of top designers and craftspeople in Scandinavia and around the world to create contemporary design that is clean, clever and natural. These principles culminate in an aesthetic we call soft minimalism. Together with our Danish Modernist roots, this concept serves as a foundation for our designers as they find new ways to unite our heritage with a fresh vision for modern living, reimagining mid-century modern values to bring irresistible new ideas to people and spaces. Your chosen objects will be with you for years to come. We know every decision you make is important, and we want nothing more than to bring joy, beauty and ease to the process of designing your space. It’s why we exist and what we do best. Menu Space
In 2017, Norm Architects designed a new type of showroom for MENU in Nordhavn Harbour, Copenhagen’s new creative destination. Reflecting today’s rapidly changing intersection of home and work, Menu Space is part office, part café, part co-working space—and all community-oriented building. It functions as a place for great ideas, beautiful design, and inspiration. Here, you’ll find openness, knowledge sharing, co-working, and collaboration. It’s a new approach to running a design business that highlights the collaborative, unifying nature of design, while serving as a showcase and testing ground for new concepts.

geometric and organic shapes, the shell’s armrests bend outwards for maximum support, as does its high backrest. The result is enveloping comfort in a slim, elegant form. The Harbour Chair can be left bare or upholstered, with five base styles in solid oak or powder coated steel, allowing for further personalisation. The low, ergonomic armrests not only enhance comfort, but also allow the chair to be tucked under standard dining tables. This is a sitting experience that energises you in the morning, helps you plug-in during the day, and welcomes you to unwind at night. From the kitchen to the office, the private dining room to the bustling café, the Harbour Chair is instantly at home—makes sure you feel the same way.

feminine—true androgyny—is what lends the table its name. The essence of the table is its duality; it is elegant yet powerful. The table is useful for everything from small restaurant spaces and bedsides to exhibition spaces. The shine of the honed marble surface against the matte steel results in a versatile visual identity that is both modernist and industrial. The small top barely hangs over the legs, creating an overall sense of balance. The Androgyne Side Table is not only useful, it is sculptural and adds an artistic silhouette to any room.

We spoke with Copenhagen-based designer and architect Danielle Siggerud about the inspiration and design process for the Androgyne Side Table, her first foray into product design.
D ES IGNER PROF IL E
Danielle Siggerud
How would you describe your design style? I work very intuitively, with a sense of timelessness and sensitivity, without being marked by current trends. Walk us through the inspiration for the Androgyne Side Table The Androgyne Side Table was originally developed as a café table we designed for the Menu Space Café, which needed a contemporary and versatile table. The intention was to create a simple silhouette, characterised by the pure use of material coupled with a clear, refined composition of one solid and one soft line. A balance of both masculine and feminine strengths. It’s androgynous: the symbol of a whole and the definition of original harmony in Greek mythology. How do you feel the table fits into the MENU design universe? MENU design universe is all about making beautiful objects for everyday use, and combining natural materials and elements with a simple, but refined design language. The Androgyne Side Table is adaptable and the body comes in black or ivory, as well as with a marble table top option.

What is your favourite aspect of the table? The visual language of the side table is a simple statement about its function and role, giving the table a timeless quality. It can stand as a complement to a modern, as well as an antique, timeworn furniture, object or place. Its height and size make it versatile, and can be used as a night stand, sofa table, or side table. When you think of the Androgyne Side Table, in what kinds of spaces do you see it? I’ve always been attracted to contrasts; how different textures, materials or shapes collide as each fragment appears stronger as an individual yet becoming whole, together. Complete. I can imagine this table in a space from another century, full of ornaments. It could also be just about the contrast of indulgent textiles or natural wood in a contemporary home, arranged perfectly with the table’s refined steel composition. How should a person using the Androgyne Side Table feel? I hope they’ll notice how versatile it is and how it can be arranged with almost anything in an interior space. We hope it stands the test of time.

brings personality and intimacy to every piece, and the Snaregade showcases the best of that as it feels customised for every setting. The new linoleum tops are both visually and materially appealing, with a heartiness that makes it an easy choice for families with young children or for a restaurant setting. The more slender silhouette of the top adds to the already present sophistication and minimalism.

Q &A WITH C HEF A NTO NI O ERRICO
The Simple Table
Head chef at Copenhagen’s beloved Italian restaurant, Mangia, Antonio Errico knows a thing or two about what brings people to the table. His fresh, authentic dishes underscore a passion for finding the best ingredients, and presenting them in a way that makes people feel at home. Here we discuss what, beyond design, makes a table feel special.

Tell us about your background as a chef. When did you start cooking, and why was that something you wanted to do? Everything started in Italy. I was studying Science and Technology of Food at the university in Parma in the north of Italy. We went on a trip to a culinary school for a lesson with a chef. That was the first time I had been in contact with a professional kitchen. I was amazed by the beauty of it. After that I considered taking a short training course in cooking; that would mean quitting my studies. I talked to my parents and they supported me, but they wanted me to do it the best way possible. So I decided instead to apply for the International Italian Culinary School ALMA. I started my education to become a chef in September of 2013. From the first day at the school I could picture myself doing this work for the rest of my life. I knew this was going to be my future. My mom and my grandmother were always cooking. In Puglia, where I grew up, food is a huge part of the society. It was wonderful to start school and find a place where people had all this knowledge about food, ingredients, and techniques. I wanted to be like them. What inspires you as a chef? In the south of Italy we have a lot of great ingredients and traditions when it comes to food, so my inspiration comes from my memories, and from traditional Italian recipes. Talking to farmers about ingredients is also an inspiration for me. In general, ingredients are important; I always have to have the best seasonal ingredients. Do you feel that the space in which the person eats is important for his experience of the food? If the food is authentic and the chef is cooking with soul and knowledge, the place where you eat doesn’t matter. Sometimes the best places to eat are the ones where you have the fewest expectations.

he line between a chair and a stool may be the simple curve of a backrest, but the design process is as meticulous for one as the other. The Afteroom Dining Chair was MENU’s first
foray into the world of chair design. Given the Scandinavian heritage in iconic chair design, we knew that this chair needed to be special. Stockholm-based Taiwanese design team Afteroom was tasked with creating a chair that was both minimalist and comfortable, with a silhouette that was both sleek and instantly recognisable. The three-legged Afteroom Dining Chair, with its distinctively small backrest and swan-like swoop of the neck, hits the mark perfectly. Upholstered and bar-level versions followed. The newlyreleased Afteroom Stool takes the series a step further, to a place of ultimate minimalism and easy comfort. With clean lines and a sturdy base, the Afteroom Stool is as much at home pulled up to the window of a coffee shop as it is around the dinner table.
Afteroom is founded and directed by Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei

We live increasingly nomadic lives, moving homes and workplaces with a new level of untethered ease. So why don’t the objects we surround ourselves with do the same? The TR Bulb design stemmed from this very question.

playbook to reimagine the potential of the LED light bulb. With simplicity as his guide, he combined form and function in a single, multi-functional object. The power of the resulting TR Bulb lies in its flexibility: it looks stylish in any setting and formation. It is both easy to move around and easy to install. To become an elegant globe light, the TR Bulb requires nothing more than an E27 socket. MENU’s first collaboration with London-based Rundle, the TR Bulb emphasizes longevity as much as utility and appearance. Long-lasting LED technology pairs with a robust construction, with an aluminium core structure drawing heat away from the LED so the bulb can run at its optimum temperature. Following the success of the original TR Bulb in opal glass with a matte finish, the range has been expanded with a shiny opal finish, which lends the bulb a more classic expression. The TR Bulb is dimmable and available individually or with MENU’s specially designed range of accessory fittings. Pure in their geometry, the fittings are crafted from thin black steel tubes and grey marble discs, instantly transforming TR Bulbs into wall and ceiling lights, table lamps, or linear chandeliers.

suspension options. The lamps are pared down in a way that emphasises the materials and the quality of the light. Hubert Pendant Ø24—The Hubert Pendant, previously only available with a black frame, now comes in ivory. This elegant update on the classic look keeps the profile minimalist, while adding a touch of femininity to the silhouette. The pendant could be used in any number of settings, from a home kitchen to a public cafe. Hubert Pendant Ø45—Just like the Hubert Pendant, but bigger. The 45 takes on a lighter feel thanks to a larger and more shallow frame. The industrial silhouette and functionality remain due to the high-quality materials. Hubert Suspension Lamp—The Hubert Suspension Frame comes with three lamp shades attached, giving it an industrial feel while maintaining a sleek and minimalist aesthetic. Though this look is most commonly found in commercial spaces like hotels and restaurants, it would also look spectacular in a modern home, lending an air of drama above a dining room table or kitchen island.
