Nothing beats the excitement of planning a getaway. Nothing beats an escape to instant summer. Nothing beats time off work, time with the family, time to reflect, or time to relax. Nothing beats a holiday. Nothing beats a Creative Holiday.

The travel agents’ travel agent Ever wondered where travel agents get their advice? Well, now you know. We’ve been sending Aussies overseas for more than 30 years. Working behind the scenes, we’ve helped travel agents all over the nation plan and secure the very best holidays for hundreds of thousands of Aussie travellers. In other words, we’re more than just a fly and drop service. Once you arrive, we won’t leave you stranded – it’s just not the Creative way. We’re on the ground, finding out everything from where to score the best bargains in Bangkok, to which local beaches have the smoothest white sand, how to keep the family entertained, and who makes the best-tasting Thai Tom Yum Goong.

ANY QUESTIONS? JUST ASK. Think of us like an expert guide; a worldly big brother, with insider tips. We know the ins and outs of where you’re going, and we’re happy to help whenever you need it. From the moment you jet off to the time you get home, we’re the ultimate travel companion.

2 — Thailand, Vietnam & Cambodia

Online value offline service High touch and high tech, we bring you second-to-none human service with online prices. Online booking may be all well and good… until a spanner is thrown in the works. A date needs to change. You clicked a button twice. The site isn’t working. And suddenly you’ve been charged for something you weren’t quoted. You know the deal. So do we, and that’s why we have real life people to help you 100% of the time. From the Creative Holidays team, to our travel agent partners, we know where you’re going, we know why you’re going, and we’re happy to sort out any issues along the way. With a 24-hour on-call service available, this means smooth sailing every day of your trip. It sure beats talking to a laptop!

Meet the family Creative Holidays has delivered great products, expert knowledge and unrivalled service for more than 30 years. Creative Holidays is a proud member of The Travel Corporation, a family-owned company that has been passionately run by four generations over the past nine decades. Each one of our 25 award-winning brands is cared for and managed by some of the most experienced and dedicated people in the travel industry. We love what we do, and it shows!

With over 4000 staff and one million customers a year, we are committed to exceptional service and personalised hospitality – no matter who you are, where you’ve come from, or where you’re going. We hire and retain the very best professionals in the industry and provide them with continuous training. No guest is just a number, and no staff member is just an employee. They’re the reason we’re in business. With a company mantra of “yes I can”, we believe in going beyond your expectations. When you live and breathe travel, it’s easy to achieve.

I NEVER HOP ON A PLANE WITHOUT MY smile AND IN MY SUITCASE YOU’LL ALWAYS FIND shoes for any occasion and several

evening dresses ready for the dance floor. I CAN’T WATCH OR READ travel documentaries AND NOT BE INSPIRED TO TRAVEL. I RECENTLY TRAVELLED TO Thailand WITH CREATIVE HOLIDAYS. IF I COULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO THREE THINGS THERE IT WOULD BE: visit Phi Phi Islands via speedboat AND explore Patpong Night Market in Bangkok AND

enjoy happy hour, which often lasts for 24 hours a day! DON’T LEAVE WITHOUT EATING Pad Ke Mao AND DRINKING an ice cold Cha-Yen (Thai iced tea). I STAYED AT Siam@Siam Design Hotel & Spa in Bangkok AND IT WAS funky and modern, with a spectactular rooftop view. THE BEST SOUVENIR I BOUGHT WAS a shirt that lit up from Bangkok markets FOR my little nephew. TO FIND OUT ABOUT THAILAND HOLIDAYS, VISIT creativeholidays.com.

Reasons to visit Thailand ... WE’VE BEEN SENDING AUSSIES OVERSEAS FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, SO WHATEVER YOU’RE INTO, WE’LL HELP YOU FIND IT IN THAILAND. The exotic lure of Thailand calls travellers from all over the world with its spectacular islands, dynamic cities and unique culture. And luckily for Australians, this vibrant destination is no more than a (relatively!) short flight away. Colloquially referred to as the ‘land of smiles’ for its friendly, accommodating people, Thailand is a destination that has something for everyone. With hundreds of islands dotted around its coastline, travellers can hop between serene and untouched stays, or let loose on world-famous party destinations like Had Rin on Koh Phangan. The mainland’s also got plenty to offer – explore lush pastoral countryside, come face-to-face with exotic wildlife, visit sacred Buddhist temples, or spend your days designer shopping before returning to your luxury hotel.

Hot tip

8 — Thailand, Vietnam & Cambodia

If you’re planning on visiting Thailand’s many Buddhist temples, make sure you carry a sarong around to cover your shoulders and legs.

Incredible food Travel around Thailand and you’ll soon realise that the locals are just as into their food as us Aussies. The tantalising aroma of traditional dishes like Tom Yum Goong and coconut sticky rice waft down the streets, and if you like to graze, you’ll find delicious street food like chicken satay skewers, chilli corn and fresh fruit at your fingertips.

Idyllic islands There are hundreds of islands in Thailand, each with their own special appeal. If loud music, debauchery and good times sound appealing, try Koh Phangan during the Full Moon parties, or if a chilled hippy vibe and snorkelling is more your style, visit Koh Lanta or the almost-untouched Koh Racha. In short, whatever island experience you’re after, you’ll find it in Thailand.

Discover more about Thailand at creativeholidays.com

An intriguing past Venture a couple of hours from Bangkok and you’ll discover the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya – a place that was once the Kingdom of Siam and one of the wealthiest cities in the East before it was destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767. The city’s ruins are now internationally recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and preserved as part of the country’s rich history.

Smiling locals

YOUR ISLAND HOPPING GUIDE TO THAILAND: Searching for tropical escapes, palm-peppered beaches and breathtaking scenery? Thailand is home to hundreds of islands across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Siam. Plan your island-hopping adventure and explore a handful of these east and west coast favourites.

Andaman Sea The west coast of Thailand is renowned for its colourful coral, giant manta rays, and sparkling sunshine from November to April. Linked to the mainland by a narrow road causeway, Phuket is the biggest amongst the west coast group of islands and a great base for exploring the smaller islands nearby. Islands: Phuket, Phi Phi Island, Koh Hae (Coral Island), Koh Racha, Koh Lanta, Koh Mook, Koh Ngai, Koh Radang, Krabi, Koh Yao Yai, Koh Yao Noi, Khao Lak and Phang Nga.

Maybe it’s the warm weather and the delicious food, or maybe it’s their strong cultural identity – whatever the reason, the Thai people are among some of the happiest in the world. Approaching each day with a smile, they’ll go out of their way to help tourists, usually refusing any form of payment or gifts in return.

Cultural enlightenment Spend time chatting to the locals and you’ll see how Buddhism filters through into every facet of daily life in Thailand. From dealing with dayto-day issues, to celebrating religious festivals, the Thai people have a calming nature and unique view on the world that makes more and more sense the longer you’re there.

Gulf of Thailand On the opposite coast, you’ll find islands like Koh Samui and Koh Phangan (of Full Moon party fame) that are known for having consistently pleasant weather due to their protected position. Bordered by Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, The Gulf of Thailand boasts crystal-clear azure water and amazing coral reefs, making it a perfect place for diving and snorkelling. Islands: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Kud, Koh Nang Yuan and Koh Tao.

“Visit the monumental Big Buddha statue – it’s visible from almost half the island and offers sweeping 360-degree views. For a small donation, you can sign and personalise your own marble tile, which will eventually be cemented into the design.” Andrea The Travel Corporation, Graphic Designer

Phuket Phuket really is an island that caters to the ‘every traveller’. Partiers should head to Patong, where there’s plenty of like-minded explorers keen for fun-filled nights. Alternately, if rest and relaxation is your style, the quieter side of the island features private beaches, exclusive beach clubs and chilled-out dining options that feel a million miles away from all the excitement.

THINGS TO KNOW: Lingo to know: “What’s the best bar to visit?” Translation: “Bar-nai-na-pai-tiaew-tee-sud?”

Local Tips: • For a different look at the island, visit Old Phuket Town to appreciate the unique Sino-Portuguese architecture along Dibuk, Thalang and Phang Nga Krabi roads. Make sure you stop in at Raya Restaurant – it’s regularly frequented by A-list movie stars, prime ministers and royalty, yet remains cheap and delicious. • Eat with the locals and step out of your comfort zone at Rawai Markets – a local market that is jam packed with delicious traditional food and fresh produce. Try the deep fried insects if you dare! • Take a day trip out to Phang Nga Bay for some serious island time – spend the day diving off your boat or get active on a kayaking tour (and make a pit stop for fresh coconuts!)

What to Pack: Your sense of adventure.

Pretty Phi Phi is the golden girl of all Thailand islands. The set location for Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘The Beach’, it captured the world’s attention back in 2000, and remains on the bucket list of many an Aussie traveller. You’ll find a flurry of activity (plus an excess of long-tail boats) on the mainland Phi Phi Don, juxtaposed with the small sandy beaches and tropical coral seas of uninhabited Phi Phi Leh.

Koh Samui In the southern part of Thailand is an island that needs no introduction. Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s biggest and busiest islands, yet despite this, it maintains a villagelike vibe. Locals still go about their daily routine of fishing and gathering coconuts, while children walk the palm-fringed roads to school each morning. A destination of opposites, humble beachside bungalows sit alongside five-star resorts, just as unassuming local eateries mix with internationally acclaimed restaurants. There are world-class nightclubs for those who want to party like an A-lister, plus golf and Muay Thai training for the healthy at heart.

THINGS TO KNOW: Lingo to know: “Where’s the nearest resort?” Translation: “Resort-tee-klai-tee-sud-yu-trong-nai? ”

Local Tips: • Koh Samui is a great base if you want to explore the surrounding islands. Book a yacht tour and spend a day out on the sea sunbaking, snorkelling and diving off the boat. • One of the best-kept secrets on Koh Samui is the Na Muang Waterfalls – a majestic set of two cascades surrounded by some of the island’s most picturesque scenery. • For the freshest seafood, you can’t beat the local night markets in Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village. They’re on every Friday night from 5pm.

Bangkok Every now and then you come across a city that changes you – a place that leaves a lasting impression with its sights, smells, tastes and atmosphere. Bangkok is just that sort of place.

Staff tip

Maybe it’s the juxtaposition of traditional Buddhist culture with the spirited, fast pace of the city. Or perhaps it’s the glamorous rooftop bars that look out over the gritty haggling streets. Whatever the reason, Bangkok is one destination you’ll never forget.

“There’s nothing quite like Bangkok street food! Head to Nang Leong Market for a delicious weekday lunch, just a short cab ride from Khao San Road. Make sure you try the famous duck noodles and coconut sticky rice treats for dessert.” Courtney Creative Holidays, Reservations Sales Agent

Just outside Bangkok sits the endearing seaside resort of Hua Hin. While many other parts of Thailand’s mainland are built for the masses, Hua Hin has remained true to its traditional roots. Walk its long white sandy beaches and you’ll stumble across local shops, night markets, cafés and seafood restaurants. Of course, when you’re not relaxing, there’s plenty to explore. Discover Thailand’s royal past with a trip to Mrigadayavan Palace. Chiang Mai If you’re a culture-vulture who’s after adventure, Chiang Mai is your kind of place. Thailand’s ‘rose of the north’, it’s a fertile region of rainforest, waterfalls and rivers. The opportunity to visit numerous indigenous hill tribes – each with their own distinctive attire, customs and dialect – puts Chiang Mai atop many travellers’ bucket lists. It’s an area that pulses with the sense of adventure. You can go elephant riding through the jungle, river rafting, dune buggy driving, and zip-lining through the rainforest. Add to that the city’s fascinating dichotomy of ancient and contemporary Thai culture, and you’ll soon understand why Chiang Mai attracts more than five million visitors a year.

THINGS TO KNOW: Lingo to know: “Which way to the markets?” Translation: “Tang-pai-ta-lad-pai-tang-nai?”

Local Tips: • One of the best ways to explore Chiang Mai is by bicycle. Hire one from one of the many shops in the central moat area, and expect to pay around 50 baht per day. • Every Sunday from 4pm is the Walking Street Markets (or the Sunday Market) – a Chiang Mai institution where you can buy local art, handicrafts and freshly cooked food, while enjoying live entertainment. • Don’t leave Chiang Mai without trying their traditional food. Khao Soi is one of the local specialities – it’s a delicious blend of yellow egg noodles served in a yellow curry with cabbage, chilli and meat.

Reasons to visit Vietnam ... WE’VE BEEN SENDING AUSSIES OVERSEAS FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, SO WHATEVER YOU’RE INTO, WE’LL HELP YOU FIND IT IN VIETNAM. Vietnam is a country of fascinating contrasts. Youthful cities, driven by the new economy, sit side by side with traditional rice paddies and ancient temples. Its hedonistic beaches are tourist playgrounds, while sleepy fishing ports provide insight into a slower pace of life. Whether you’re seeking luxury or are on a budget, hitting up tourist hot spots or taking the road less travelled, Vietnam has something for everyone.

Breathtaking beaches Blessed with more than 3000 kilometres of coastline, Vietnam is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Nha Trang is a tourist favourite thanks to its bleached sand and azure-blue waters, and just a short boat ride away sit several islands famed for their topnotch diving and snorkelling. The south central coast of Vietnam has its own stable of beautiful beaches, including ‘China Beach’, which was famously visited by American troops during the Vietnam War. Mui Ne’s strong winds make it ideal for kite or windsurfing, while its swaying palms and sun-drenched dunes will satisfy those looking to relax.

Welcoming locals Vietnam may boast seven UNESCO-listed World Heritage sites, but the country’s real treasure is its people. Vietnamese people, in particular those involved in the tourism industry, will shower you with politeness, grace and generosity. The locals you meet will do anything to ensure you have an unforgettable holiday experience, and although the people living in rural areas are less accustomed to seeing foreigners, they are just as welcoming, albeit a little inquisitive! 46 — Thailand, Vietnam & Cambodia

Tasty cuisine Vietnam is renowned for having one of the most nutritious and delicious cuisines in the world. Packed with fresh vegetables, fragrant herbs, meat, seafood and poultry, Vietnamese cuisine is sure to tantalise your tastebuds. The Vietnamese borrow several cooking techniques from their Chinese and Thai neighbours and ingredients from their French heritage. In fact, you’re almost as likely to come across scrumptious baguettes and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee in Vietnam as you are in Paris!

Natural beauty Vietnam offers some of the most spectacular sights in Asia so be sure to pack your camera! Get up close and personal with thousands of flora and fauna species at the Cuc Phuong National Park, see Ban Gioc Falls – Asia’s largest waterfall, or visit Halong Bay to see several thousand islands dotted within the glistening waters of the Gulf of Tonkin.

Historic sites Old architecture gives visitors a glimpse into life of days gone by. In southern Vietnam, you’ll find My Son Sanctuary – the remains of the Champa kingdom, and Hoi An’s Old Town, which was once a frequented trading port. The north is home to the Imperial City of Hue, a walled fortress and palace in Vietnam’s former capital.

Hot tip

Fascinating festivals From providing light-hearted entertainment to demonstrating respect for fallen heroes, festivals are an integral part of Vietnamese culture. Notable nationwide events include Tet – the celebration of the coming of spring and the new lunar year, the Mid Autumn Festival where children carry colourful lanterns through the streets, and Wandering Souls Day when the Vietnamese pay tribute to the dead.

It may cost less to purchase a beer than a bottle of water in parts of Vietnam but try to keep yourself hydrated, particularly in the summer months.

Local Tips: • Party animals should head to District 1 for pulsing nightlife. Try the infamous Apocalypse Now nightclub, the always-open Crazy Buffalo, or Ginger 60 for great live music. • Counteract the steamy heat of the city by sipping on a Vietnamese iced coffee (ca phe sua da). The coffee is brewed directly into a cup containing sweetened condensed milk, before being poured over ice. • In Ho Chi Minh City, custom-made clothing is an affordable luxury. Indulge in a perfectly cut suit or dress by visiting one of the city’s many tailors.

What to Pack: Plenty of energy and your dancing shoes.

The youthful and vibrant Ho Chi Minh City is home to soaring skyscrapers, avant-garde fashion and buzzing nightlife. This really is a city that never sleeps, so whether you’re an early-riser or a night owl, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Shop ‘til you drop at Dong Khoi and intersecting streets, where you can pick up custom-made silk garments. At lunchtime, head out for a bowl of pho – a tasty broth made with noodles and either beef or chicken, and finish your day by partying until dawn at one of many nightclubs situated in District 1.

City Highlights Tour Cut to the chase and pinpoint Ho Chi Minh’s must-see hotspots on this half-day tour. Uncover the city’s vibrant and somewhat turbulent past, from the Notre Dame Cathedral, Central Post Office designed by Gustav Eiffel (yes, of the Eiffel Tower), the former Presidential Palace and the headquarters of the Saigon Government during the American War. Hot tip: Drive to visit the War Remnants Museum for a vivid local insight into the war (be aware that some of the photos are very graphic).

Enjoy a two-hour drive northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, through lush southern Vietnamese countryside, to the famous Cu Chi tunnels. The tunnel complex was started in 1948 to protect the Viet Cong guerrillas from the French air and ground sweeps. Today, a visit to the underground villages will provide a better understanding of the tunnels hard history and Vietnamese resilience during combat. The city is divided by the handsome Perfume River, and while the south bank hosts the modern French quarter and hotel district, the north bank retains its old-world charm. Regional Vietnam FROM THE BUZZING CAN THO METROPOLIS TO THE FINE WHITE SANDS OF PHU QUOC, VIETNAM IS FULL OF EXCITING PLACES TO VISIT. HERE’S OUR PICK OF THE COUNTRY’S BEST-KEPT SECRETS.

Sapa

Chau Doc

The picturesque town of Sapa in Vietnam’s northwest offers opportunities for treks, homestays and incredible views. Sapa is home to Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina, as well as lush vegetation and cascading rice terraces. Adventurous travellers can trek the 3143 metres of Fansipan – but keep in mind it will take between one and three days (depending on your fitness!). Alternatively, walk the three kilometres to Cat Cat Village to see the Black Hmong ethnic group going about their daily lives. The beautiful scenery will make your hike worthwhile.

Draped across the banks of the Hau Giang River, Chau Doc is visited by many tourists passing from Vietnam to Cambodia, but is in fact a worthwhile holiday destination in itself. The city has sizeable Cham, Chinese and Khmer communities, with a cultural diversity that’s apparent in its fascinating temples, mosques and nearby pilgrimage sites. Take a boat trip across the river to see floating raft houses and fish farms, spend your day haggling at the bustling marketplace, or simply stroll along the charming Mekong riverside.

THINGS TO KNOW: Local Tips: • The best time to visit Sapa is from August to December, when clear skies will ensure a great view of Fansipan. • The beautiful Sapa Lake is located within walking distance of Sapa Village. You can rent a pedal boat, enjoy a picnic or relax by the water’s edge. • When visiting minority villages, try to travel in a small group of four people or less to minimise disruption and aide communication with the locals.

What to Pack: Trekking boots.

68 — Thailand, Vietnam & Cambodia

THINGS TO KNOW: Local Tips: • Drive the six kilometres to Sam Mountain, rising dramatically from an ocean of paddy fields. You’ll enjoy an unforgettable view of the Mekong Delta region from its summit. • Cyclos (three-wheeled bicycle rickshaws), known as ‘xe dap loi’ in the area, are the quickest and cheapest way of getting around. Agree on a price with the driver before you head off.

Shhhh

Can Tho Can Tho is the pulsing heart of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region. This thriving metropolis features a lively waterfront, gorgeous sculpted gardens and picturesque canals. Just six kilometres away sits the famous Cai Rang floating markets, where you’ll find locals buying and selling mango, bananas, papaya, pineapple and other seasonal produce. Sellers will tie their produce to a tall pole so it can be seen from a distance, making for an amazing spectacle.

THINGS TO KNOW: Local Tips: • Head to the famous Hot Pot Alley, where about a dozen restaurants all offer the same specialty Can Tho Hot Pot in different styles, with duck or fresh fish from the Mekong River. • Can Tho is known for its fresh exotic fruits. Pick up some jackfruit, pomeloes, custard apples, corossol, mangoes or longans at the Xuan Khanh Market.

• History lovers will enjoy a trip to Tuc Dup Hill – a famous military base for Vietnamese soldiers in the war against US forces.

• Buses are an easy and inexpensive mode of transport from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho. Thanh Buoi provides the quickest service, with a ride of approximately three hours.

CULTURE AND CORAL TO QUIETLY COOL:

Halong Bay Vietnamese legend has it that Halong Bay was created by a dragon whose powerful tail carved through the land, crafting islets within the ocean. Almost 2000 of these atolls lie within the Gulf of Tonkin, making for a truly spectacular seascape. The limestone landforms of Halong Bay feature unique arches and grottoes designed by the regression and transgression of the sea over time. The best way to explore Halong Bay is by boat, and there are many operators to choose from (see following page for some top picks). With any luck, you’ll also be treated to a sighting of local wildlife on your visit.

Phu Quoc

Phan Thiet

The tear-shaped island of Phu Quoc is a tropical paradise with sugar-white sand beaches and mountains covered in lush, fertile jungle. Located within the pristine waters of the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is the perfect place to enjoy water activities such as kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving. After a day or two at the beach, take a hike to Suoi Tranh Waterfall, where you can dip in the cool stream or search for wild orchids along the banks.

The coastal city of Phan Thiet in southeastern Vietnam is known as the land of the dragon fruit, but what this place is really famous for is its fish sauce. The city produces 16 to 17 million litres of it every year! This traditional fishing village is a great place to try regional delicacies like sun-dried squid and steamed bo hom fish. There’s also a great photo to be taken from the top of Tran Hung Dao Bridge, which overlooks the fishing harbour that winds through the town, and is always packed with boats jostling for space!

THINGS TO KNOW: Local Tips: • Dine under the stars at the night market in Duong Dong Town. Choose from the fresh seafood laid out next to each restaurant. • See the island’s marine life on a scuba dive. Phu Quoc has two separate diving locations – the north is more sheltered but the south has a much bigger choice of dive sites. • Hire a motorbike and ride around the remote Bai Thom Beach area, along sandy tracks and through cashew nut plantations, at the top of the island.

What to Pack: Sunglasses and swimmers.

THINGS TO KNOW: Local Tips:

Con Dao Islands Miles from the mainland, the Con Dao Islands are a picture-perfect tourist attraction in Vietnam. Previously used as a prison colony by the French colonial and US administrations, the ruins of sprawling prison complexes are still open for visitors to Con Son Island, the largest atoll in the Con Dao chain. History aside, the islands are renowned for their immense natural beauty, with deserted sandy beached, incredible coral and interesting sea life making for a popular diving destination.

• To get the best deal at the Ocean Dunes Golf Course, book from Ho Chi Minh City or visit the club’s website. • Phan Thiet is hot and humid year-round but visit from November to May to avoid the rainy season. • For great views of Phan Thiet and the coastline, head to the Poshanu Cham Towers. The site contains the ruins of three towers, dating from the 7th century.

What to Pack: Your appetite for seafood.

It’s also a favourite spot for honeymooners – and for good reason – boasting lakes, waterfalls and lush flower gardens that are breathtakingly beautiful. Throughout your journey, you’ll visit colourful Vietnamese floating markets and homes by way of a traditional sampan. Reasons to visit Cambodia ... WE’VE BEEN SENDING AUSSIES OVERSEAS FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, SO WHATEVER YOU’RE INTO, WE’LL HELP YOU FIND IT IN CAMBODIA. Ask any seasoned traveller to list their favourite destinations and chances are Cambodia will be one of them. With its rich culture, fascinating history and mesmerising landscape, this country is certainly hard to forget. But underneath this is a deeper reason to visit – after decades of upheaval, Cambodia has a spirit that can’t be broken and that shines through in every part of Khmer life.

Historical sites Cambodia’s long and sometimes dark history has had a strong influence on the country it is today. You could never understand this completely without visiting Angkor Wat, the incredible 12th-century temple complex, or the Choeung Ek Killing Fields, a site commemorating those killed in the Khmer Rouge regime. Seeing the ancient Hindu temple of Prasat Preah Vihear (which sits atop a 525-metre cliff in the Dangrek Mountains) provides astounding insight into the empire that ruled the nation for six centuries.

Strong traditions Cambodians have combined elements of Hinduism and Buddhism to create their own unique belief system. This religion infuses almost every aspect of daily life, from the Sampeah (the bow with hands pressed together that locals use as a greeting) to colourful festivals that punctuate the calendar. Cambodian architecture reflects the country’s unique culture, with Buddhist and Hindu motifs inscribed on to temple walls, while a performance of classical Cambodian dance is nothing short of mesmerising. 72 — Thailand, Vietnam & Cambodia

Delicious cuisine Often overshadowed by its Thai and Vietnamese neighbours, Cambodia’s food is the hidden gem of Southeast Asian cuisine. Cambodians artfully contrast flavours, textures and temperatures on the palette to create a delightful culinary experience. You’ll find bustling markets and spirited street vendors selling fresh fruit, vegetables and rice dishes, alongside quality seafood restaurants serving the catch of the day. Don’t leave without sampling traditional dishes like Fish Amok, Bai Sach Chrouk and Green Mango Salad.

Beautiful beaches

Floating villages

Australians love a beach holiday and the Cambodian coastline doesn’t disappoint. Head to Sihanoukville, where you can tuck into fresh seafood and enjoy a cold beer by the seaside, or sail for Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) to lounge on raised bamboo platforms. If you’re after an unspoiled island getaway you’ll love Koh Rong, which is great for trekking, snorkelling or just kicking back on the sand.

For three million Cambodians, Tonle Sap Lake is not just a home, but also a livelihood. The lake is extremely important to Cambodia, providing over half of the country’s fish as well as fertile land for the cultivation of rice and for agriculture. Bordering Tonle Sap are hundreds of floating villages with wooden houses and shops teetering on stilts above the water. You’ll be amazed at how these villages co-exist in harmony with the ecosystem of the lake.

Hot tip

Welcoming locals Despite having lived through years of poverty and political instability, Cambodia’s Khmer people always share a smile. The optimism and spirit of the locals is something you will come to admire on your travels. Cambodian people can be described as conservative and traditional, although Western influences are evident in the country’s larger cities. Learn simple Khmer phrases such as “jum-reap soo-a” (meaning hello) and “or-goon” (meaning thank you) to show gratitude to your hosts.

Cambodians are always celebrating a festival of some sort. The largest and most spectacular are the Khmer New Year and the Water Festival (held in April).

Get up close and personal with Siem Reap’s most famous neighbours, the magnificent temples at Angkor. Take a drive to Boeung Melea, a sprawling jungle temple largely overrun by vegetation and constructed in a distinctly Cambodian, Hindu style. A prototype for the rest of the Angkor Wat temples, it’s a good place to start! Spend the day exploring temples like the overgrown, mysterious Koh Ker, a more peaceful, jungle-flanked archaeological site for a less ‘touristy’ experience. Where: Siem Reap Hot tip: Before you get here, make ‘Temple of a Thousand Faces’ by John Shors your holiday read – a historical fiction that brings Angkor Wat to life.

Killing Fields Tour

Take a picturesque drive to the rural outskirts of town to Banteay Srei, the birthplace of classical Khmer architecture. You’ll head to Phnom Bakheng, the first major Angkor temple, and gear up for an unforgettable elephant ride to the most spectacular sunset of your life, with panoramic views over Angkor Wat and West Baray.

Come face to face with Cambodia’s turbulent, tragic history with a guided tour of the devastating ‘Killing Fields’. Take a drive past sprawling meadows and stilt houses to Udong, a forgotten outpost full of sleepy Buddhist shrines that served as Cambodia’s capital from the 17th to the 19th century. From here, you’ll trek to the hallowed ground of the ‘Killing Fields’ – an area where thousands of people suffered at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.

Where: Siem Reap Hot tip: Elephants were the only form of transport in the Angkor glory days, so you’ll see the sunset like the Emperors!

Where: Phnom Penh Hot tip: Pay your respects to the fallen at the central stupa, housing thousands of Cambodian victim’s skulls.

“Heads up budding Tomb Raiders! Take a torch along to investigate windowless temple rooms and make sure your shoes have grip as jungle temple floors can be slippery after rain.” Daniel Creative Holidays, Reservations Sales Agent

Booking Conditions Important Information The www.creativeholidays.com website (the “Site”) is owned and operated by Creative Tours Pty Ltd (ABN 23 003 286 459) trading as Creative Holidays. In these booking terms and conditions the expressions “Company”, “Creative Tours”, “Creative Holidays”, “we”, “our” or “us” include Creative Tours Pty Ltd and entities that assist or participate with Creative Tours Pty Ltd in the provision of the services it agrees to provide (where the context permits, including its and their employees and agents) and the expressions “you”, “your”, “client” or the “passenger” include a person seeking or requiring the services offered by Creative Tours, all other persons (if any) included with that person in the booking and that person’s or those persons’ travel agent (if any). TRAVEL PRODUCTS AND AVAILABILITY Creative Tours arranges bookings, ticketing and other ancillary services of and related to travel and accommodation including but not limited to, air travel, transfers, car hire and leisure activities (“Travel Products”). Creative Tours is neither a common carrier nor a private carrier, and does not itself provide any of the Travel Products described in its brochures or on the Site. Creative Tours acts as your agent in making the arrangements with third party suppliers, who provide the Travel Products to you as principals (“Suppliers”), and is not the agent of any such Supplier. By booking any Travel Products, you (if booking directly or through a travel agent) and your travel agent on your behalf (if booking through a travel agent) acknowledge and confirm that you have read our booking terms and conditions, that you accept them without reservation as constituting the entire agreement between you and us which cannot be varied other than by an officer of the Company in writing. Bookings of all Travel Products we arrange are provided by Suppliers we believe to be reputable and to operate in accordance with the standards set down by their own local authorities. Those Travel Products are provided subject to those Suppliers’ terms, conditions and limitations (some of which may exclude or limit liability in respect of death, injury, delay, loss or damage to person and/or effects) and we accept no responsibility for them nor do we make or give any warranty or representation as to their standard, quality or fitness for any particular purpose. Any legal recourse you may have in respect of those Travel Products is against those Suppliers and not against us. We recommend all passengers take out adequate travel insurance for the duration of their travel. All Travel Products shown in our brochures and on the Site may be booked, subject to availability at the time of booking. QUOTES AND PRICES We endeavour to ensure the accuracy and currency of all prices displayed in our brochures and on the Site. Prices are: • specified in the currency stated in the brochure or on the relevant page of the Site (generally either in Australian dollars or New Zealand dollars) and are subject to change without notice; • indicative only and subject to change until all of your booking details have been provided to us and we have confirmed your booking; and • for the number of persons or items on the conditions stated in the brochure or on the relevant page of the Site, including but not limited to any hover box. “From” Prices: The expression “from” with respect to a price means the lowest price for the Travel Product we believe is available at the time of publication, based on information we have received from Suppliers. Itineraries and Quotes: You may build an itinerary on the Site and obtain a quote from the Site or by contacting our Call Centre or through a travel agent. Any quote is an estimate only of the current price and subject to change until a booking is confirmed and you receive a unique Creative Tours booking number or, if a quote for an airfare, until it is paid and ticketed. Payment terms are subject to individual Supplier requirements and will be advised at the time of booking. Taxes, Charges and Currency Fluctuation: Government taxes and charges imposed by Suppliers or third parties (including ticketing fees and airline fuel surcharges) are subject to change. If there are any increases in such taxes, charges or Supplier rates or any currency fluctuation which increase the price of your booking, we reserve the right to change the price you must pay by including the additional charges or amount (together with any applicable service fee and GST) at any time prior to and including the date of your departure, even if we have received full payment from you. We will notify you of any such price changes that result in your travel arrangements being materially different from those prior to the change being effected and in respect of which we have already accepted your deposit or full payment. If so, and you do not wish to alter your travel arrangements, you may cancel them and monies you have already paid, less any charges levied by Suppliers, will be refunded. Any refund will be calculated at the currency exchange rate that applied when the booking was confirmed. Errors: We reserve the right to correct any errors in fees, charges, rates or prices quoted or billed, even if we have received full payment from you.

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED IN THE HOLIDAY PRICE The price does not include airfares (unless otherwise stated), passport and visa fees, insurance, laundry, phone calls, beverages, meals not detailed in the itinerary, tips to tour guides, motor coach drivers and local city guides, items of a personal nature, excess baggage, expenses, fees or costs incurred in case of illness, or of refusal of entry to, detention in, or expulsion or repatriation from a country or part of a country. We are not liable for any expense, costs or loss incurred in relation to such matters and you release us from all liability, damages or responsibility in relation to them. PAYMENT Method: Payment for all Travel Product bookings made via the Site must be by Credit Card (American Express, Visa or MasterCard) or PayPal. You must provide us with all the required details of your Credit Card or PayPal account. For Credit Cards a fee of up to 2% of the total cost of the booking will be applied at time of payment. Terms: Depending on the Supplier’s terms and conditions of booking, you may be able to hold a Travel Product without payment, pay a deposit for it or you may be required to make an immediate payment in full. • Hold – You will be notified whether a Travel Product may be held and the period it may be held. If held, you must pay a deposit or full payment in accordance with these terms and conditions and the notification (generally within 5 days of it being held, unless your date of travel is less than 10 days from notification). • Deposit – Unless otherwise notified you must pay a deposit to secure the booking. The deposit is a minimum of $165 per person, together with any prepayment specified by the relevant Supplier. You must pay the balance of the price at least 10 days prior to the earliest travel date or earlier if we or the relevant Supplier so specify. • Immediate payment – You will be notified if any Travel Product within a booking requires immediate payment in full. You must make that payment immediately to secure the Travel Product at the notified price. If you fail to make any required payment outlined above, your booking is automatically cancelled unless we notify you otherwise in writing. A travel agent who makes a booking at your request is your agent and is not the Company’s agent for the purpose of receipt of the deposit or any part of the price. CREATIVE CLUB Except during peak seasons (such as Christmas-New Year), for special events (such as cultural or sporting events) and other “black out” periods nominated by a Supplier, the following benefits apply to any Travel Product identified with our “Creative Club” logo: Price Match Guarantee: Except for bonus offers and inclusions offered by a Supplier exclusively to a third party, we will match our gross price to a third party’s gross price for a Travel Product if: • it is based on the same currency as our quote or the offer on our Site (i.e. Australian or New Zealand dollars); • the third party’s Travel Product (including any bonus offers, added value or inclusions) and ours are identical; • you provide us with the third party’s written quote, which indicates its availability at the time of the price match in the country of the currency you require the price matched; • you have not booked that Travel Product; • the Travel Product has not previously been price matched; and • you pay for the Travel Product in full when we have matched the price. Added Value Bonuses and Special Upgrade Offers: Subject to availability and to these terms and conditions, we will use reasonable endeavours to ensure you receive the added value bonuses and upgrade offers referred to in the description of Travel Products identified with our “Creative Club” logo. We may, at our sole discretion, withdraw any added value bonus or upgrade offer for any reason and at any time. CANCELLATIONS, AMENDMENTS, REISSUES AND REFUNDS If we are entitled to cancel the booking of any Travel Product and we cancel it or if you cancel it (unless these terms and conditions otherwise specify) the following applies: Cancellation after Deposit is Paid: • You must pay any Supplier/airline cancellation fees. • Your deposit ($165 per person) will be available to apply to the cost of other Travel Products for 90 days after the date of cancellation and, if not so applied, will thereupon be forfeit to us. Cancellation after Full Payment: • You must pay any Supplier/airline cancellation fees. • There is no refund of or credit for the deposit. • We will return to you any amount refunded to us by the Supplier. Amendments to a Booking: We may accept or

reject a request for amendment to a booking of Travel Products in our absolute discretion. If we amend a confirmed booking, it may be repriced and you are liable for any resulting price change, including any cancellation fees imposed by the Supplier. You must pay us an amendment fee of $55 for each amendment, being a genuine pre estimate of the reasonable cost of administrative expenses we incur in amending the booking. Refunds: After your travel has commenced, there can be no refund in respect of any Travel Products not utilised whether by choice or because of late arrival or early departure, including failure of any transport to operate according to schedule. Employees of any Supplier are not authorised by us to give any undertakings in respect of refunds or other matters.

necessary for us to disclose details of your health or medical condition to Suppliers. You authorise us to make such disclosure and you agree that our doing so is not a breach of confidence or duty and that you will not hold us liable in tort, in contract or under any privacy or anti-discrimination laws.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITIES We arrange the provision of Travel Products which are provided by Suppliers. We do not ourselves provide the Travel Products you may receive on your holiday. Suppliers Terms and Conditions: Supply of the Travel Products is made, and all itineraries, coupons and exchange orders (collectively “vouchers”) are issued to you, upon the Supplier’s terms and conditions that are then in use, including as to the applicable laws, requirements and policies of any government authority related to, among others, visas, entry, exit or transfer requirements. Your acceptance of the vouchers constitutes those terms and conditions as the entire agreement between you and the relevant Supplier and you bear all costs or losses incurred as a consequence of your failure to comply with them. Exclusion of Liability: In the absence of our negligence, we are not liable for any cancellations, diversions, substitution of equipment, variations, postponements or any other act, omission or default (whether negligent or otherwise) of any Supplier nor are we liable for any loss or damage to baggage or property, injury, illness or death, or any other loss (including consequential loss) damage or claim whatsoever arising from the act, error, omission, default or negligence of any person not our direct employee or under our exclusive control. We are not responsible for any criminal conduct of any third party. Where a motor coach seat is fitted with a safety belt, neither we nor any Supplier concerned will be liable for death, injury, or any loss or damage whatsoever you suffer from any accident or incident if you are not wearing the safety belt at the time of such accident or incident. We are not liable for any injury, damage, loss, delay, additional expenses or inconvenience caused by your acts, omissions or defaults, your state of health, medical condition or circumstances or other reasons which are beyond our control, including force majeure events or failure of equipment or machinery. Warranties: To the extent permitted by law, all express and implied warranties, guarantees, representations or terms are expressly excluded. Where the law implies any warranty guarantee or condition which cannot be excluded, our liability to you for breach thereof is limited to supplying the services again or payment of the cost of having the services supplied again. Maximum Liability: Despite any other provision of these terms and conditions, to the extent permitted by law, our maximum liability to you or any third party is limited to the price you have paid us for the booking. Holiday Variations: We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule departures and itineraries if required by circumstances beyond our control. Where it is necessary to change a hotel we will endeavour to substitute accommodation of no lesser standard. Insurance: We recommend you purchase travel insurance against forfeiture of payment, loss of deposits, cancellation charges, baggage loss, medical expenses, theft and other contingencies. We make no representations as to what you may recover under any insurance. You agree not to hold us responsible for any decision of insurers, and/or any Supplier, or the requirements of any foreign government authority, foreign law or policy. Passport Checks: You must ensure names used to make a booking are exactly as appear in passports. Any name/initial or spelling changes made after booking confirmation may result in Supplier imposed fees and/or you being unable to travel. Passports, Visa, Vaccinations and Baggage: A visa does not guarantee you entry to, or permission to remain in, a country. Some countries may refuse entry or may detain, expel or repatriate you because of your state of health, medical condition or other reasons. You are responsible for all visas, entry, health and other requirements and all documents required by the laws, regulations, orders and/or requirements of countries you intend to visit. You should check the requirements of those countries with their embassies or consulates or other authorities.
