Brief B:

Society, Packaging & Consumers

The Problem Have you ever had that frustrating moment of spilling your juice box everywhere just trying to get the straw in it or losing your straw before you even get a chance? This project is designed to alleviate straw catastrophe. Adults and children alike struggle with this issue resulting in many unhappy and messy situations. This problem spans all through the juice box industry. The first problem with the straw is the flimsy way it is attached to the side of the box. During transport of the product, in school lunchboxes or picnic baskets, the straw can easily fall of the juice box leaving the disappointed consumer with a delicious drink but the inability to drink it. The only way to then drink the juice box is to puncture the tiny hole and drink from this or cut the box open and pour into a glass. The second problem occurs when trying to place the straw into the juice box. Consumers then experience the annoyance of squirting juice everywhere as a result of the built up pressure and squeezing of the container to insert the straw.

The Solution

To solve the common frustrations, the redesigned pack includes a built-in straw, which prevents the straw from falling off and getting lost. This forms a plastic seal keeping the juice fresh and hygienic. By pre-attaching the straw, the new design also solves the problem of inserting the straw and squirting the juice everywhere when the pressure is released. The straw is situated in the side flap of the juice box. This placement is so the straw is folded down to prevent spillage. Once the plastic has been pulled away the straw is able to flip up releasing the pressure and to keep the juice hygienically sealed. The box packaging and aseptic design will remain the same as it addresses environmental and hygienic concerns. This is to keep the freshness and hygienic nature to maintain the highest quality of product.
