The summer is the perfect time to get out on the boat or go camping and Gear to Go can cover all your summertime needs! The boat rentals are an especially good deal since Gear to Go's friendly staff will do their best to provide you with the service you need to make your day out on the water fun and easy! [My favorite thing about renting from Gear to Go is] “e ease and how helpful everyone is at Gear to Go . For instance if you go to a normal marina, you have to pick up the boat that day at 9 a.m. and then drop it off at 4 p.m. or 6 p.m. that aernoon and that is all you get. While at MWR, you can get it the whole weekend,” he said, “And it’s either the same price or a whole lot cheaper.” ~2LT Robert Nell E Company 39th Engineer Battalion with 2nd Brigade

Make Memories In the Local Area By Jenelle Grewell

You don't need to hop on a plane or go on a long road to trip to find fun stuff to do! The area around Fort Campbell has plenty of opportunities for adventure and to make memories. Whether you are into history, nature, wildlife, ghost stories or just nice walks, the local area has something for you!

Museum. The Customs House Museum has a few permanent exhibits such as the Explorer’s Gallery, Memory Lane, Postmaster’s Office and Becoming Clarksville: Honoring Legacies of Leadership but they also feature rotating exhibits so there is always something new to see!

Bell Witch Cave

For schedule of exhibits and more information, please visit: customshousemuseum.org/exhibits/temporary-exhibits Getting into my personal favorite on the list, the Bell Witch Cave in Adams, Tennessee, which is only about 30 minutes from Fort Campbell. The historic Bell Witch Cave is home to famous tale of the haunting of John Bell and his Family when they settled in the area in 1804! If you like scary, you can go on full tours of the cave, burial grounds, cabin and much more at night! If you are into the more historic stuff or maybe just need to tone down the spook factor, they offer daytime tours of the cave and cabin. For more information, please visit: bellwitchcave.com/ghost_hauntings/bell_witch

Cadiz Yes, the entire city of Cadiz. Just visit their website and see there is so much stuff to do! Located by Land Between the Lakes, Cadiz always has plenty of great activities. An elk and bison prairie allows you to get up close. You can visit the historic Homeplace and feel like you stepped back in time. Get educational and check out some great shows at the Planetarium and visit the Nature Station to see wildlife like eagles, owls, snakes and much more! And of course, since Cadiz is at Land Between the Lakes, there are plenty of camping and boating opportunities. For more information and to see their calendar of events, please visit: gocadiz.com

Dunbar Cave Dunbar Cave is a 110-acre park which features amazing karst topography and three trail options. There are plenty of great activities to do at Dunbar Cave State Park including nature programs for all ages, Cave Tours, birding, fishing, and hiking! The trail options range from easy to moderate so almost anyone can get out and enjoy the beautiful plants and animals. Don’t forget to stop by the entrance to the cave where it is 58 degrees all year! For more information, please visit: tnstateparks.com/parks/ activities/dunbar-cave-hiking

The Greenway A 4.6 mile trail runs from Mary’s Oak Trailhead to Peachers Mill Road and it is an absolutely gorgeous way to spend an afternoon. You don’t have to walk the whole trail, it is nicely divided into easily manageable sections but if you are up for walking the whole thing, be prepared to climb some hills and drink lots of water because it is a workout! Are you worried about it being too hot? Don’t sweat it because big, luscious trees shade the paths of the Greenway. For more information, please visit: cityofclarksville.com/index.aspx?page=158

Customs House Museum Right in downtown Clarksville, you can learn a lot about Clarksville’s history and culture. The Customs House was built in 1891 to accommodate Clarksville’s booming tobacco trade but it wasn’t until 1984 when it became the home of the Clarksville Montgomery County

FREEDOM (What Are You Thinking?)

by Ramon M. Maisonet & Bonnie Surie, Employee Assistance Program Do you remember the fall of the Suddam Hussein regime back in 2003? If not, go to YouTube and look at the video of citizens pulling down the statue of Hussein. In it, you can see the exhilaration of people who had tasted freedom for the first time in their respective lifetimes. I watched as the Iraqi people in the video rejoiced, shouted in joy and sang songs about freedom; and it was a stark reminder for me about the overwhelming power that lies in liberty. We are reminded every Fourth of July to value our liberty – in fact, we value it so much that we go to the polls on Election Day to propagate it, we launch campaigns when we are denied it, and we have even gone to war to defend it. With Fourth of July occouring last month and the Election coming up, freedom is a big theme in our lives. We all desire to live as freely as we can, without restraint or the feeling of being caged or trapped. It is the physical freedoms that we crave and we exert tremendous efforts into ensuring it stays this way. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” once wrote: “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” The kind of freedom that I’m talking about is not about external forces or people keeping you down, and the oppressors are not some enemy army. The freedom that I’m referring to is the ability to live your life according to your own limitations and the “oppressors” are the barriers within you that are keeping that from happening – that is, your own negative thoughts. One of life’s greatest tragedies is to be physically free, yet emotionally bound, to have opportunity and still have dissatisfaction with one’s life, with who we are, not to mention the inferiority that seemingly shrink-wraps our being. How and why is this? For a nation that prides itself in the notion of “liberty and justice for all,” I wonder why so many still feel confined in their own bodies? Maybe I’m asking the wrong question … I wonder what is keeping some you from dreaming, from doing, from becoming and from expression of your authentic self. I wonder if the world is going to see the real you, the “free” version of you before it’s all said and done. Maybe it’s comparison to others that is creating this feeling of bondage. Think about this: with the constant flooding of information from the lives of the more “important people,” it becomes almost impossible to not compare our own life to theirs.

9

I’m here to tell you that looking at and measuring yourself up to the “Jones’s” will, without a doubt, leave you feeling submerged in hopelessness, jealousy, envy, doubt, and negative thinking. Thoughts begin to assail you, like: “I’m not good enough.” “I’m worthless.” “I’m not attractive enough.” “I’m not wealthy enough.” “I’m not this, I’m not that, and I never can or will be!” We do this even though it’s been revealed time and time again, that a large percent of the information the news and social media shares is faulty, or exaggerated to a great degree. By the constant comparison and demanding of more freedoms for our physical being, our emotional and mental freedoms become more deprived and limited to the amount of liberty we’re capable of experiencing. Is it possible that the “trapped” feeling is simply because we’re confining ourselves through the thoughts we entertain and choose to act on? Is it our self-liberty that we desire, and we’re allowing it to slip through our own fingers? While those are good questions, here is the better question: “What freedom can I give myself?” Realizing that sometimes less is more, and of course, more is more. How can you help yourself? Try a few of these tips: • Less time on social media and reading the news, and more time actively pursuing your goals that you have the freedom to do. • Less time gossiping, and more time planning a road trip, utilizing the freedom of coming and going as you please. • Less time complaining about the amount of money you earn, and embarking the journey of education, or entrepreneurship, a freedom that you also have the right to employ. You can choose to grow through applying yourself with the freedoms you have, or you can choose to be stagnant in your life and blame the lack of freedom. We have the freedom to choose how we apply it in our own life. We have the freedom to choose not only what we decide to do, but what we think. The way one thinks will ultimately determine the choices they make. And isn’t that what is one of life’s greatest freedoms – the freedom of choice? But Bonnie, I’ve failed in the past. Okay? But Ramon, I’m afraid I’ll make a mistake. And? Just like a chapter doesn't define the whole story of a book, your mistakes don’t define the destiny of your life. If you have made a mistake (or in my case, dozens of them), smile, press forward and keep turning the pages ... you’ll get there. “Expose yourself to your deepest fear,” said Jim Morrison, “after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free.” I’ll repeat the end: You. Are. Free. campbell.armymwr.com
