WHY CLARKSVILLE C
harming, vibrant, beautiful, historic, friendly – so much more to do than I expected. These are the words and phrases we consistently hear when visitors share their impressions of Clarksville. Our rich history and gorgeous downtown architecture are encompassed by a mighty river. Natural beauty abounds, creating a wealth of outdoor recreation. Hand-crafted foods and brews are inspired from 昀avors around the globe, but there's also plenty of down-home Southern fare.
VISITCLARKSVILLETN
Our people are also pretty special. Home to two Olympic athletes -- both of whom were trailblazers, champions, and indisputable legends -- Clarksville is also the proud home to an Army division (101st Airborne Division, Air Assault) that is 昀lled with some of the bravest men and women on the planet. Why should Clarksville be on your must-visit list? We think the answer's pretty obvious when you browse through our 2020 Travel Planner. Still not convinced, follow along on our Instagram, read our blog, sign up for our enewsletter. We'll grow on you! 3

You'll probably expect to 昀nd your share of BBQ (that's a southern noun for pulled pork, not a verb), fried chicken, cat昀sh, steaks and those (in)famous mouthwatering desserts. You won't be disappointed! Options like Johnny's Big Burger, The Cat昀sh House, Edward's and Excell's Market will give you all of that and more.
ON THE TRENDY SIDE

State University, and our dozens of international industries give the city a robust international food scene. Where else can you get authentic Korean Bulgogi and German Schnitzel in the same restaurant? Try something new. You'll appreciate that all of our 230+ restaurants are affordably priced.
You may also enjoy the crafty creations in our breweries and pubs, distillery and winery. Find those listings on page 29.

larksville’s founding at the con昀uence of the Cumberland and Red Rivers set the stage for what became a thriving commercial crossroads, particularly for the tobacco trade, by the mid-1800’s. Glimpse into the life of Early Europeans and African American Settlers, along with Native Americans who roamed the land during the mid-19th Century at Historic Collinsville Pioneer Settlement. The intrepretive property features 16 restored log homes and outbuildings with authentic period artifacts on 40 rural rolling acres. Permanent exhibits at the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center like Becoming Clarksville, showcase how local agriculture, industry, education, culture, government, medicine, military, and transportation have all contributed to the city of today. Built in 1858 for wealthy tobacconist Christopher Smith, the beautiful Smith Trahern Mansion re昀ects the transition between Green Revival and Italianate styles. Adjoining the property, the Riverview Cemetery dates to the 1700’s. Here rests the grave of Valentine Sevier, one of the area’s earliest settlers.

larksville’s rich military history spans from the Civil War era through modern con昀icts. The community’s 24-site Civil War Journey may enlighten your understanding of this turbulent era in America’s history. The remarkably well-preserved Fort De昀ance Civil War Park & Interpretive Center features discernable outer earthworks, a powder magazine and gun platforms from the site chosen by Confederate troops to defend the river approach to Clarksville. Captured in February 1862 and renamed Fort Bruce, the site was occupied for the remainder of the war. Around the corner is Sevier Station, home of early settler Valentine Sevier, and Montgomery County’s oldest standing structure. Covering the early 1940’s to present, the Don F. Pratt Museum offers an extensive collection that traces the history of the 101st Airborne Division’s Screaming Eagles. Among the museum’s treasures are a fully restored C-47 aircraft resembling the plane used to carry the division commander, Maj. Gen.Maxwell D. Taylor, into Normandy during World War II. Reservations are required for guided tours.

n an area steeped with heritage, it’s only natural that a vibrant arts scene would emerge to capture the minds and imaginations of residents and visitors. Public art, theatre, museums and galleries reinforce Clarksville’s cultural experience. The iconic Roxy Regional Theatre is a cornerstone of entertainment in downtown Clarksville. Enjoy live professional theatre and musicals, from family favorites to Shakespeare to black-box alternatives. The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center features both rotating and permanent exhibits in its 56,000-square-foot facility. The museum is both the state’s second-largest general history museum, and a fascinating architectural marvel. The Customs House connects an 1898 historic property with a modern gallery space. Science, history and art, with plenty
of hands-on interaction, means fun for kids of all ages. ArtWalk is a popular downtown event held the 昀rst Thursday evening of each month. This free, self-guided tour spans a 昀ve-block radius and combines visual art, live music, engaging events and more. Clarksville’s Public Art tells our history and showcases local and regional sculptors and painters. See pieces on our sidewalks, trails and buildings (listed on page 42.) Downtown Artists Co-op (DAC) is a primary gallery showcasing the works of local artists dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the area. Live Music is an option in Clarksville year around. With free summer concerts, Jazz on the Lawn, dueling pianos, Gateway Chamber Orchestra, Cumberland Winds, APSU events, or the smooth blues at Tina Brown Under Ground Lounge, there's no shortage of 昀rst-class music in Clarksville!
