MWR TO OFFER 2 EGG HUNTS By Kerry Weintraub
Fort Knox Family and MWR invite you to come out and join us for some family fun. CYSS will be hosting its annual Eggstravaganza on March 23 at the Caruso Youth Sports Complex from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. There will be free activities for children age birth through high school. Families will be able to enjoy healthy fun activities which include face painting, inflatable bounce houses, the bubble car, games, free play family activities & Challenger Soccer. Of course an Eggstravaganza would not be complete without an egg hunt. Bring your baskets and collect as many eggs as you can and see if you can find a golden egg which holds a special prize inside. There will be designated times and areas for specific age groups (infants – 2 years, 3 - 4 years of age and children age 5 through Kindergarten) so all the children have a chance to gather some eggs. May Miller and her family attended last year’s Eggstravaganza and she said “I felt it had all different sorts of areas that were age appropriate from a little one year old and older. It was very well organized and that made it fun to go to. I felt that all the children had a very wonderful time and they all had smiles on their faces.” Have an older child? Activities are planned for them as well at Devers MSTC. Devers Middle

SHAMROCK THE NIGHT AT LZ
By Jennifer Palalay
Don’t let the leprechaun have all the fun! There will be plenty of shamrocks and shenanigans at this year’s Shamrock Shackfest at the Landing Zone slated for March 15 from 8:00 PM until 4 AM. This must-attend event is the official St. Patrick’s Day party zone on Fort Knox. The club will be decked out in traditional Irish decorations with green everywhere to include a lot of cold, hard cash to be given away in the Cash Cube. “The Cash Cube looks easy but wait until it’s your turn,” said Petra Morgan, FMWR’s Recreational Delivery System programmer. “Every time you win one of the many games or activities we have planned for the night, you get a chance to step into a phone boothsize money machine for the opportunity to grab as much of the cash swirling around as possible.” Feeling lucky? Try your chance at one of the many games and activities planned for the evening to include the Pot O’Gold Treasure Hunt, Minute to Win It Game, and the Green Jell-O Pool Game. A mechanical bull will be a challenge for even the toughest riders! Ride it as many times as you can handle it as it is free with the paid cover charge. All Military I.D. card holders will be charged a $3 cover charge and all others will be charged a $5 cover charge. If you purchase the traditional Irish Buffet for $9.95, the cover charge is waived. The buffet menu will include traditional Irish mainstays like corned beef and cabbage, red potatoes and shepherd’s pie. “This is the 15th year the Landing Zone will host a party in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. It’s wildly popular with the young Soldiers living in the barracks because they know they can come and have a good time and then use the MWR Shuttle Service to bring them safely home,” said Jean Neal, Landing Zone manager. “The best part of the night is that Soldiers can come and have fun and forget about everyday things. The Landing Zone is located at 2723 Spearhead Loop. For more information about this event or the on-post MWR Shuttle Service, call (502) 942-0409.
FREE FISHING FUN FOR THE FAMILY By Jennifer Palalay No matter your age or skill level, the 3rd Annual Trout Fest will make a fisherman out of anyone! This popular event, scheduled for March 9 from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM at the Fort Knox Water Park, is free and open to everyone, young and old. “We will fill the Fort Knox Water Park pool with approximately 300 pounds of seasonal trout for our patrons to fish,” said Jasmin Elder, Fort Knox Aquatics assistant manager. Trout Fest is first come, first serve. Participants can use their own fishing gear or use the fishing gear available at the Water Park. Fishing bait will be provided. Patrons who pre-register or register that day can take up to three fish home, limited to the first 75 people. Bags of ice will be supplied to take the fish home fresh. Snack food concessions will be available for purchase. Educational tables, demonstrations and fun activities will be available throughout the day as well. “We will have experts on hand to teach our patrons how to fish, how to clean the fish, fishing safety, and much more,” said Elder. “Fishing accessory door prizes will be given away, too!” Once the fishing is done, the pool will be filtered, drained and filled again with water to a winter level. “The pool can get pretty dirty with the trout swimming and fishing bait in the water. We take extra care of the pool to ensure proper cleanliness,” stated Elder. The Fort Knox Water Park is located at 5539 Chaffee Avenue. MANY ELECTRONIC BOOK OPTIONS AT LIBRARY By Michael Steinmacher
While media reports of “the death of the book” have been going on for years, books in print are certainly still alive, although they now coexist on shelves, physical and virtual, with modern day counterparts. As a leader in Army Libraries, Barr Library’s collection reflects this change with eBooks and audio books available for customers to borrow. The Library’s physical shelves remain stocked with books, everything from the most current thriller to the hottest in non-fiction to classics and materials designed to support research needs. There are many more titles available in electronic formats, catering to both the academic and recreational reader. There is a gold mine of eBooks available to authorized AKO users, all available through the Library’s website, www.barrlibrary.org. Clicking the link to eBooks on the main page will transport users to a page where they can choose from downloadable books and audio to support both their research and recreational interests. Most of the titles available can easily be transferred to a portable audio device for listening on the go. Another option for listening on the go is the Library’s expansive collection of audio books, available in both CD and Playaway formats. If you’re looking to listen to a new James Rollins thriller during your commute, check out our selection of books on CD. Looking to listen while doing PT, cleaning the house, or performing some other chore? Check out one of the Playaways, self-contained, handheld audio books whose audio jack allows one to listen with headphones or plug into the car’s stereo system. Unlike books on CD, which require changes of discs to continue listening, the Playaway allows readers to listen to the whole title uninterrupted, with convenient pause, fast forward, and reverse features available. Customers interested in a more “traditional” experience but looking for the hottest, most in demand titles might want to check out a Nook eBook reader. Preloaded with content, everything from the hottest fiction to books being adapted as movies, these readers allow users to conveniently carry multiple books at the same time and provide an experience not too different from “flipping” the pages of a traditional book. The Library’s Nooks allow children’s books, cookbooks, and other illustrated works to come to life in living color. Color and animation blend together in Tumblebooks, also available through the Library’s website. A collection of classic and contemporary children’s books, Tumblebooks is a perfect portal for children learning to read and reluctant young readers to experience books online with exciting narration, music, and special effects. Check out the Library’s catalog online at www.barrlibrary.org or on a Smartphone at www.barrlibrary.mobi for available titles. Books on CD, Playaways, and Nooks are all available for electronic reservation using one’s My Account feature. For assistance using downloadable books or Tumblebooks, or questions in general, contact the Library at (502) 624-1232.

by Adam Slyfield
Sports are a big part of many people's lives growing up. It can teach young people responsibility, teamwork and how to set and achieve goals. Football was that sport for me. But with the injuries involved in sports, some parents are scared to let their children play. Young athletes are being recruited and groomed to play at a very young age now-a-days, which has made the number of youth sports participants grow dramatically. Nearly thirty million children and adolescents play youth sports in the United States and with those numbers there are bound to be a high number of injuries. High school athletes accounted for an estimated 2 million injuries and nearly 3.5 million kids under the age of 14. Those numbers are frightening, but what they do not tell you is 62 percent of youth sport injuries occur during practice. The responsibility to play safe lands squarely on the parents and coaches shoulders to ensure their players safety. Why not take the same safety precautions at practice that you do for a game? It is just as important for the parents to know the rules of the sport as it is for the child playing it. There are injuries in every sport from tennis to boxing. Football takes the most of the flack about injuries, probably because it is the most popular sport in the US, even at the high school level it is taken very seriously. But the NFL has problems of its own with players lying about injuries to keep playing not only for pride but for the fear that they will lose their job. This year San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith received a concussion and while nursing his injury lost his starting job to a young up and comer Colin Kaepernick. A decision made by head coach Jim Harbaugh, which ended up paying off with the Super Bowl game. Usually if you get injured in the NFL your job is waiting for you when you recover. But
this new way of thinking by coaches like Harbaugh might result in even more players lying about their injuries. In the NFL last year there were 4,493 total injuries, a number that has increased the past two seasons. But every injury isn't life threatening or career ending; as the majority of injuries do not even keep the player out more than a week. A concussion is the injury that worries most parents while their child is participating in youth football. With studies being done all across America on brain injuries in sports there has been a lot of focus on head injuries in football. The NFL is trying to educate young players on the game and the injuries involved with it. USA Football, the official youth football development partner of the NFL, created “Heads Up Football a program designed to teach young athletes to tackle the rightway using their chest and upper body instead of the head, therefore helping to prevent serious injuries. The NFL also donated 30 million dollars to brain injury research. Hopefully education on this matter will decrease these numbers in the future. But it is up to the parents and coaches of these student athletes to ensure the lessons are used properly. Superstar athletes are role models to the younger generation, whether they want to be or not, so it's also on them to help educate the youth in understanding the risk of the game and ways to prevent it. Only a parent can determine if the risk of injury is great enough to prevent their child from participating in youth sports, but the lessons learned will carry through adolescent years into adulthood and foster a sense of camaraderie only learned through team sports. To learn more about Youth Sports at Fort Knox please contact CYSS Youth Sports & Fitness at (502) 624-4747.
MARCH VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH By Tracy Whitaker
The Boys & Girls Club of America's mission statement is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Rashaan Allen shows his belief in this motto because he lives and breathes this mission every day of his life. His passion for volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club and other organizations makes him the March Volunteer of the Month. Rashaan Allen is a Senior at Fort Knox High School where he is a well-rounded athlete and participates in numerous school clubs such as student council, pep club and the ping pong club. He is the only child of SSG Crystal Singer who is originally from Greenville, Alabama. Rashaan and his mother have called Fort Knox home for last three years. Allen has volunteered with the Houston Bowling Center, Anderson Pool, Feeding America in Elizabethtown, KY and with the Boys and Girls Club of America. He volunteers with these organizations during his free time. He was honored as the Fort Knox Boys and Girls Club of America Youth of the Year in 2012. The award recognizes students on the state, regional and national level. The Youth of the Year program looks for club members who are articulate, well-groomed and knowledgeable about their club and community. When asked why he likes to volunteer, Allen said, “Growing up I didn’t always have it easy. Volunteering gives me the opportunity to help others in a way I wish I had received help.” He remembers volunteering one time at Fort Bragg making happy hats for children with Leukemia. Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they got those hats brought tears to his eyes and was an experience that he will never forget. Allen feels that if everyone volunteered just a little bit of their time to help someone else, the world would be a better place.

AUTHORS TO DISCUSS WOMEN AND WWII By Michael Steinmacher
When one hears the phrase “women and World War II,” it is not uncommon for the iconic image of Rosie the Riveter and her promise, “We can do it,” to spring to mind. While that image may typify what many think when considering women’s contributions to World War II, authors Jeffrey and Jeanne Suchanek greatly expand that picture with their book Star Spangled Hearts: American Women Veterans of World War II. The authors will discuss their work in a special Women’s History Month Authors at Your Library program at Barr Library March 28 at 6:00 PM. Over 300,000 women served during World War II, with many providing essential support on the home front in positions such as clerks and typists. While they were not allowed to directly serve in combat roles, World War II gave rise to many service organizations for women, including the Army Nurse Corps and the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Military Service). The Suchaneks collect the stories of 20 women spanning the services and allow those veterans to tell their stories in their own words. Rather than create a formal history of women in World War II, the authors bridge the accounts with an introduction of the speaker and a brief afterword that summarizes her life after the War. The accounts sound like they could have happened today. Familiar challenges to today’s Armed Forces, such as sexual harassment, combat roles, and homosexuality, are sprinkled throughout these stories. The authors will discuss their work, answer questions and autograph copies of Star Spangled Hearts, which will be for sale at the event. For further information, contact the Barr Library at (502) 624-1232.
