HAPPINESS What does happiness mean to you? To me it means Family, baby giggles, naps, sunshine, fresh air, flowers, pedicures, and a husband home from deployment. According to Merriam-webster.com, happiness is defined as: a state of well-being and contentment: JOY. Yes, words also bring me happiness. I am a total word nerd! That’s the great thing about it, happiness is different for everyone. That is what this issue is all about, finding your own happiness. Be it exercising, getting lost in a great book, making some time for yourself, cuddling with a pet, or taking a vacation, we have given you some great resources and ideas to start you on your way. Even if it is only taking one minute of reflection for yourself each day, or according to motivational coach Dale Thomas, greeting yourself each morning with “hello gorgeous!,” it is a great start to a new, happier you!
Melissa Wells, Editor mwrlifeeditor@fortcampbellmwr.com
Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it. - Groucho Marx

In Pursuit of Happiness By Tara Goodson
All too often, we expect others to make us happy. I know that I, along with several people I know, have been guilty of it on more than one occasion. Who is responsible for your happiness? Is it your Spouse, kids, parents, coworkers, the staff of the various resources available to us at any given moment of the day, or do you find it within yourself? This year I began my own pursuit of happiness. While on a girl's get-a-way with my best friend earlier this year, the subject of happiness was often debated. Keep in mind, I was on vacation sans kids and Spouse, but something still just felt faintly off. I normally cherish “me” time, but I was grouchy with her, grouchy with the staff at the hotel, even grouchy with the massage therapist that was supposed to be helping me relax. Was it a third-life crisis? Was I bored, stressed, or worried? Whatever the reason, I continually blamed others for my unease. “If only” was the start of most of my internal dialogue. If only I had the will power to turn down French fries. If only the kids wouldn't fight all the time. If only I could manage my time better. If only he was not active duty, I wouldn't be so lonely. If only I hadn't given up “XYZ” to follow him in his military career.
3
That's just a few of the “if onlys” that have raced through my head over the past year. After bemoaning my fate for the seemingly 100th time in less than a day, my friend asked me what I was going to do to change my attitude. I just sighed, pulled my towel tighter
around me (we were in a steam room), and muttered that I didn't know. Spoiled much? Definitely! I was sitting in a gorgeous spa, courtesy of my lovely husband (deployed at the time) who had encouraged me to go on the get-a-way, complaining about my life choices.
Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. - Abraham Lincoln
www.fortcampbellmwr.com
Not exactly gracious. Unbeknownst to my friend, that one question revamped my way of thinking. What am “I” going to do to change my own happiness? I thought it over and over the rest of the weekend. I asked her what she does to make herself happy. I asked the stranger sitting next to me in the sauna. I asked the young kid next to me on the flight back. I even asked the shuttle driver at the airport! I asked my husband the next time we were able to chat online. At that point, I suppose I was thinking that someone else had the key to making me happy. And by the way, asking a semi-dressed stranger in the sauna is not a great way to get ideas! While all of the suggestions they made were great, and hopefully work for them; I finally realized that they couldn't make me happy. I had to work on achieving my happiness myself. Ugh! I cracked open a few self help books and reread things I already knew. If I knew the advice, why did I have to read it again? Simply put, because I wasn't applying the information. Reading those books brought back the basics I learned in Army Community Service (ACS) Army Family Team Building (AFTB). AFTB taught me plenty of resources for self sufficiency to include agencies to use if I need assistance, the skills to cope with deployments, the locations on post to let off steam, and that I am not alone. In short, it gave me the confidence I needed to be secure in myself and my role in society. Confidence is the cornerstone to your personal happiness. When you are confident, you are secure. When you are secure, you don't doubt your ability to make the right decisions. When you make the right decisions, you have the feeling of empowerment you need to keep the positive cycle going. You also doubt yourself less, which inspires confidence in others, in turn further boosting your own confidence. Like most people, my self confidence varies on a daily basis. Bad hair day, pants are a bit snug, miss a deadline at work, or allowing my internal filter to stop working and hurting someone's feelings all make a huge impact on my confidence level. An appointment with my stylist, cutting back on the French fries, actually using the calendars that are on my phone and computer, and saying I'm sorry all help fix those little missteps. Occasionally, I have to fall back to the “fake it until you make it” mentality, but that has occurred less often since I came to my second realization. It's less about you than you think it is. As often as I joke with my Family and friends that it's my world and they just revolve around
www.fortcampbellmwr.com
me, I know that I wouldn't be anywhere without the support and love they provide. I am not an overly emotional person, as my husband will let anyone know. I am direct, opinionated and not outwardly afraid of many things. I also forget to tell him and my loved ones that I love them unconditionally. Instead of telling them, I do things for them. It only took about ten years before my hubby and I figured out our “Love Languages.” ACS Family Advocacy Program offers this class at various times during the year. Several Chaplains on post have also offered it during marriage retreats. I would highly recommend reading the book, “The 5 Love Languages” by Gary Chapman, or taking the course if it is available. You will learn to speak to your significant other in the language he/she understands. I took the lessons learned here, along with great advice I have been given from various Military Family Life Consultants (MFLCs), and applied it to my life. It allowed me to take a step back and add much needed perspective to my communication style. If you are constantly fighting about the same thing, it’s time to reevaluate. What is this argument doing for you? During one of my reevaluation processes, I hit upon my third conclusion. I need to be balanced. I am not talking about the ability to walk with a book on your head, but of being a well rounded individual. I need to be healthy (emotionally, mentally and physically) to be happy. I need to
own my feelings instead of making excuses about my reactions; cause and effect, for lack of a better term. I have said numerous times over the years, “you can't expect to change anyone, but you can change your reaction to them.” Sometimes it may mean counting to 1000 before you reply, or walking away from the situation. Other times, it means making your true feelings known, and accepting the consequences, come what may. Acceptance, understanding and perspective allow me to react appropriately emotionally. I have fewer “Chicken Little” moments now that I trust my decisions and stopped second guessing the intent of those around me. I also came to the realization that I need to exercise regularly. The physical fitness facilities on post are available to fit any of my needs. When I want to burn off some steam at the gym, I can choose from several including Estep Wellness Center. If I can't make it, I have the option of walking on any one of the great trails on post or in the community. I even plan on heading out to Outdoor Recreation's Challenge Course to try my hand (and feet) on one of the rock walls that are available. I recently tried Aqua Zumba at Gardner Indoor Pool and loved every minute! I also have reduced my fast food habits and consumption of certain adult beverages. Small changes are making a big difference in my happiness. I strive to start my day on the right foot and sometimes it does require an extra jolt of caffeine, but I do want to be responsible for my own happiness. I use the resources that the Army has generously made available to me as a Spouse, and I give thanks everyday that they are still available. My friend mentioned to me the other day that so many things are here to make our lives easier that we shouldn't take it for granted. Starting today, I will make my own happiness by being confident, humble and balanced.

Yoga Classes at Estep Wellness Center Provide Fitness and Relaxation By Melissa Wells The practice of yoga is all about balance; mental, physical, and spiritual. It is an ancient, exercise that involves spirituality, meditation, and focus on breath. It is also a wonderful exercise to increase flexibility, improve muscle tone, and help prevent injuries. When my life gets out of balance, and the stress level starts to rise, it affects everything, including my relationships, my work, my health, and my attitude. Practicing yoga allows me to turn off the outside world and refocus my energy. I feel relaxed and wonderful afterward; like every muscle is awake, the tension is gone, and I have
the endorphin rush that you often get after a heart pumping workout. You wouldn’t think that by focusing on your breathing and holding stretches that you would work up a sweat, but believe it or not, yoga will get your blood pumping! Estep Wellness Center has recently added new yoga classes to their schedule. Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. These classes practice Iyengar yoga which uses props such as blocks and bands to help achieve the perfect pose or asana. Don’t be intimidated by the terminology, or the preconceived notion that you have to be able to
twist like a pretzel to practice yoga. According to Deanna Lock, Aerobic Coordinator at Estep Wellness Center, “these classes are for all levels from beginner to advanced. Our certified instructors are knowledgeable and here to help.” Lock also states that “[yoga] enhances and builds overall leaner muscle which in turn burns more fat for energy. That fat burn can continue for days due to the recovery of the muscle tissue after stretching!” Yoga Fit which is more of a flow based or Vinyasa yoga is also offered on Wednesdays and Fridays. No matter your experience or fitness level, yoga provides an outlet to improve physical fitness and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Focus on you; close your eyes, take a deep breath, exhale, and relax. To view the complete schedule of classes at Estep, please visit www.fortcampbellmwr.com/Recreation/Estep, or call (270) 798-4664 for more information.
Explore your Imagination Brunch and a Book offers Opportunities for New Adventures By Melissa Wells There are days that I dream of taking a vacation; maybe a walk on the beach or an afternoon of antique shopping. The reality is, that sort of escape is not often possible on a moment’s notice. That is, unless you pick up a great book. Reading is a wonderful way to let your imagination take you to that far away place of history, adventure, romance, mystery, and intrigue. Robert F. Sink Library offers a wonderful program that not only allows you to get involved in a wonderful book, but a venue in which to talk about your thoughts with a group of peers. Brunch and a Book takes place the third Tuesday of every month at 12 noon. Food is prepared and provided by the entire library staff. Patrons also have the option
www.fortcampbellmwr.com
of bringing a brown bag lunch or enjoying what is provided. On May 17, they will be discussing “Her Mother's Hope" by Francine Rivers.
According to Library Technician Lora Gassett, this is a turn of the century story about a young woman trying to forge a better life for herself; going against her father's speculation that, she'll never be more than a servant, but chasing the dreams her mother has for her, which is to one day own an Inn. She leaves home to
pursue her dream and winds up in England and then Canada, where she falls in love. She gives up much for marriage and motherhood and eventually finds herself with her Family in Central Valley California where her relationship with her own daughter is threatened by her tough love tactics. The daughter marries and begins a Family of her own amidst the beginning of WWII. The book is a double novel. One tells the story of the mother, the other, of her daughter. “It sounds very cool and I am really excited to bring this book for discussion,” says Gassett. “Brunch and a Book is a wonderful way to meet people and to see what the library has to offer.” For more information, please call (270) 798-5729.

A Splashin’ New Twist to Cabin Fever By Charlene Mazur Recall that feeling of excitement when you enter your hotel for vacation. Have you ever thought of what it’s like through the eyes of a child? I have inspected several hotels and have been able to observe people from all walks of life and have come to the conclusion that there are two types of Families that stay at hotels. One is the “conservative” Family that is respectful of the hotel and doesn’t want to impose their noisy children on other guests.
They make their kids follow all of the rules and require them to be quiet in the room so as not to disturb other guests. This would be me! Then there is the “extreme” Family that is all about having fun, racing down the long hallways, taking elevator rides to every floor, and then pushing all of the buttons as they exit to run down the stairs. Not to mention seeing how much “air time” one can get while jumping and bouncing on the beds. This would be my husband! Luckily, the all-inclusive Great Wolf Lodge Resort was made for extreme fun, and will be enjoyed by all kinds of Families. As I entered the resort, I was shocked and amazed!

Kids were everywhere, laughing and running with parents following close behind, squealing with glee. I think what surprised me most was the fact that they were soaking wet. Right smack in the middle of this cabin the size of a castle, was a huge indoor water park! I have seen many water parks, but never one indoors! It was full of great activities for all ages. Bear Track Landing is base to splash central where you will find Fort Mackenzie and Alberta Falls, a four story fortress of fun where you can adventure through slippery suspension bridges, swinging cargo nets, treetop slides, soaking spray stations and an enormous 1,000 gallon bucket that tips from the treetops, drenching you with delight! You can also check out Coyote Cannon , a 436-foot enclosed slide that is totally dark until you shoot out into the light and splash into the pool, or Crooked Creek an endless winding lazy river, or how about the Hydro Plunge where roller coaster meets water slide. There are a total of twelve giant water slides and a huge wave pool all encompassed within 78,000 square feet. It also leads outdoors to the Raccoon Lagoon. It’s a splashing good time for everyone! Once water logged, you can venture out to dry land where you will find so much more in this splashin’ cabin. Check out story time at the Great Clock Tower, MagiQuest, an interactive adventure game involving a magic wand, your Family, and a journey through the lodge solving puzzles, enchanting objects, quests, and dragon battles. Take the next step on Compass Quest. This hi-tech compass will lead you on an interactive expedition finding adventure and unveiling nine new quests full of magic, mystery and discovery. Northern Lights Arcade is where kids and kindred spirits can challenge each other with over 100 exciting arcade games for prizes! If all of this all sounds like way too much fun and you just want to wind down, why not treat yourself in the luxury of a full-service spa, with a Zen-like atmosphere, just for adults? Scooops Kids Spa is also available for children 12 and under. Scooops will spoil your little sugar’s fingers and toes with a deletable triple
scoop of ice-cream themed manicures, pedicures and facials and a sweet treat from Bear Claw Sweets & Eats.
Visit MWR Leisure Travel Services, located inside the PX Mall, to plan your splashin’ retreat for a new kind of cabin fever. Our hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. For more information, call (270) 798-743 or visit http://www.fortcampbellmwr.com.

Family Dinner in No Time
By Melissa Wells
Since becoming a mom, my life is broken down into a series of scheduled moments. Work, 30 minutes for feedings, an hour and a half for nap, playtime, bedtime, laundry, getting ready for work; it can be very stressful! As someone who was not a “planner,” this was a big adjustment. I learned very quickly, that both my daughter and I were much happier when I kept her on a daily routine. She was instantly a much more contented baby and started sleeping through the night, which made me a much happier mommy! Working full time with an hour, round-trip commute also is something that needs to fit into that routine. At the end of the day, there isn’t a whole lot of time to prepare and enjoy healthy meals. I am a firm believer that you are what you eat and that a diet of sandwiches and fast food does NOT do a body good. Being rushed was stressing me out and began affecting my health; I had to make a change. I discovered that preparation and planning is the key. Preparing for the next day in the evenings after the baby goes to bed has made a very positive impact on my happiness. These recipes will give you Slow Roasted Chicken the gift of time. What a relief to have a healthy meal ready and waiting when you come home after a long day. Instead 1 (3 – 5) lb whole chicken of rushing around or hitting the drive-thru, you can enjoy a Olive oil meal together without the stress. Salt and pepper to taste Garlic Powder to taste 1 large onion Triple Chocolate Delight Ice Cream Sandwiches 1 bottle zesty Italian dressing Double Chocolate Cookies (see recipe below) New potatoes (optional) Chocolate ice cream (slightly softened) Carrots (optional) Chocolate or other candy sprinkles Rinse chicken well. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Rub the seasonings into the chicken. Place the chicken in a large zippered bag to marinate with ½ bottle of Italian dressing. Refrigerate overnight. Cut a large onion in half and place on the bottom of a large slow cooker. Set the marinated chicken on top of the onion. This will keep your chicken from sitting in the grease while cooking as well as add flavor. Add potatoes and carrots if desired and pour in the remaining Italian dressing. If your slow cooker has a timer, set it to 4 hours on low. It will then switch to just a warming mode. If you do not have a timer, just cook on the lowest setting while you are out.
Cream together butter and sugars until fluffy. Mix in cocoa, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla. Slowly blend in flour. Fold in chocolate chips and drop by 1 ½ inch spoonfuls onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 14 – 16 minutes at 325 degrees. Cool on a wire rack.
Mediterranean Pasta Salad 1 package tri-colored pasta (Penne, Rotini, or Bow-Tie) 1 (4 oz) package tomato/basil flavored feta cheese Kalamata or Greek Olives Cherry tomatoes Pepperoni 1 cup store bought lite balsamic vinaigrette dressing ½ cup dried cranberries ¼ cup mayonnaise 1 Tbsp sugar 1 cup broccoli Cook pasta according to package directions. When cooled, add in broccoli, feta cheese, olives, tomatoes, dried cranberries, and pepperoni. Mix together salad dressing, mayonnaise and sugar and pour over all ingredients. Toss to coat and refrigerate overnight.

Double Chocolate Cookies 1 cup butter (softened) 1 cup brown sugar (packed) 1 cup sugar 2 tsp vanilla 2/3 cup baking cocoa 2 eggs 1 tsp baking soda 2 cups all-purpose flour 4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips ( 2 cups semisweet, 2 cups dark chocolate chips can also be used)
Make Double Chocolate cookies and allow to cool completely. Once cool, scoop ¼ cup of softened ice cream onto one cookie. Top with another cookie. Roll the cookie on its side in the chocolate sprinkles to coat the ice cream portion. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze immediately. This recipe can vary to your taste. Add cherry chips instead of chocolate chips or use fat free frozen yogurt instead of ice cream. Either way, you will have a pre-made delicious treat for everyone to enjoy. This recipe is also great for spending quality time with your children. The littlest ones can add sprinkles! Even if their main participation is licking the spoon, doing an activity together inspires communication. Plan ahead, relax, and enjoy.

Military Spouse Appreciation Week Throughout history, Military Spouses have been the backbone and support of our Soldiers. We keep the home fires burning through mission, deployment, reintegration and reset, and do it all with a smile on our faces. The Army recognizes all of the sacrifices and continued support on May 6 with Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Fort Campbell takes it one step further and shows their gratitude with a week full of fun events and activities. May 2 brings us the Spouse Conference with a delicious lunch buffet provided by Cole Park Commons Eagle Catering. The conference features an eloquent guest speaker as well as give-a-ways and prizes. You also have the choice of participating in several different fitness classes. The luncheon and presentation portion, along with childcare takes place at the Family Resource Center (FRC). The fitness classes will be offered at the Joe Swing Recreation Facility. Burn off a few calories and rev up your appetite with Zumba in the morning or relax and breathe through the things that are stressing you out with yoga in the afternoon. Whichever one you choose, you will be treated to a beautiful view overlooking the quarry and wooded area inside Gate 1. May 3 offers two fun choices this year. From 10:30a.m. until 12:30p.m., Chef Bob and Chef Wendell will prepare mouth watering finger foods in a cooking demonstration. Getting to view an actual cooking demonstration and enjoy the food is a treat you won’t want to miss! The evening’s entertainment is all about the runway as you check out this year’s fashions from JC Penney, 5:30p.m until 7p.m. From “What Not to Wear,” to how to go from a work day to a fun evening out will be modeled by a great group of volunteers. Kids on Site (KOS) will be offering childcare for both of these events at the FRC for those who have preregistered, so you won’t even have to worry about hiring a sitter! Door prizes and gifts will be offered throughout both events; a great chance for fabulous goodies! Break out the pain relief patches for Soldier for a Day on May 4 and 5! then test your mental skills at one of the many flight simulators. These tough activities will surely bring out your competitive side, so rest up beforehand! If you require childcare, you can drop off your children at 6 a.m. with the KOS staff at the FRC. You also have the chance to participate in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) training exercise or finish up with a road march. Both days offer the same itinerary and will give you a glimpse of the mental and

Unconditional Love Pets as Companions Help to Relieve Stress and Boost Happiness
By Keri McPeak “Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.” ~George Elliot (1819 – 1880) Why is it that humans have a natural instinct to incorporate animals into their lives? Could it be because animals, especially pets, provide unconditional love, or is it that we see ourselves as a reflection of a particular animal? Just like people, animals come in different shapes, sizes, colors, and have their own sense of individuality and unique personality. It is through their characteristics that mirror our own that we develop a bond with our pets and experience how they truly make our lives happier. Pet owners already know how great it feels when we spend time with the animal friends that we love, but you don’t have to take my word for it; a study done by Clemson University showed a positive correlation found between people having regular interactions with pets and their happiness. People who had regular interactions with pets reported more happiness with their lives than those without pets. However, if you own a pet, you do not need research to tell you that that spending time with pets can reduce your blood pressure, your risk of heart disease, stress, and increase your happiness. Many Families on Fort Campbell own pets. As a matter of fact, the Veterinary Treatment Facility on post (VTF) provides services to over 5,000 customers who collectively have over 8,000 pets! Fort Campbell also offers a variety of services to help care for your pet. Everything from the VTF where you can obtain check-ups and standard care, to the Fort Campbell Dog Kennels where you can board your dog when you go out of town. There is also an animal shelter on Fort Campbell where Families can and go to adopt an animal in need of a loving home. Military ID card holders who adopt through the VTF are eligible for the following services for dogs including full vet exam, Rabies and Distemper vaccination, microchip, heartworm test, VaccMicrochip, spay or

single Soldiers or dual military to utilize during deployment. The Guardian Angels for Soldiers Pets (GASP) program is an all volunteer, nonprofit, Federal Tax exempt public charity supporting Service Members, Veterans, and their beloved pets through programs aimed at reuniting pet(s) and owner(s) following deployment or an emergency hardship. With GASP, a network of foster Families is established throughout the United States to provide a loving and healthy home environment for the pet(s) of our Soldiers until they can be reunited with their owner. This service helps to relieve the stress a Solider may face when having to deploy and avoids the Soldier having to relinquish their beloved pets to an animal shelter or rescue group. When the Soldier returns, they are reunited with their animal
neutering, combo test and fecal exam. For military ID card holders, the cost of adopting a female cat or female dog is $97. Adoption of a male dog or cat is $92. Civilians are not eligible for spaying or neutering through the VTF with the adoption of a cat or dog on post, but some services are included in the adoption. For dogs, Rabies and Distemper vaccination, heartworm, fecal check and microchip are included. Cat adoption includes Rabies and FVRCP, Feline Leukemia test, Feline Leukemia Vaccination, microchip and fecal. For non-military ID card holders, the cost for a cat or dog is $72. In addition to the Fort Campbell Dog Kennels which are available for Soldiers and their Families, there is also a special program for and the companionship between human and pet is rekindled. For more information about pet adoption, please contact the Fort Campbell Veterinary Treatment Facility at (270) 798-4844/3614, or your local Humane Society. Boarding information can be obtained by visiting www.fortcampbellmwr.com or by calling (270) 798-2629/3126.
