During this time of social distancing it’s a great opportunity to start a summer vegtable garden. The garden can be a big back yard affair or on the side of a fence on your porch. This is a fun project for the whole family. We focused on the quarantine, with reader submitted projects that they have done, also acts of kindness they have witnessed and helpful sites to visit for dinner ideas with limited supplies. I always love hearing from our readers and sharing their accomplishments.

Deciding to start your own garden is a big and exciting decision. The thought of being able to grow and produce your own fruits and vegetables gives you such a rewarding feeling. Even though it may seem like a simple process, gardening can sometimes get a little tricky. Doing a little research and finding the best tips and tricks before starting can ensure your garden produces to its best capacity. To begin, it is important to understand when to plant what. Different produce come with their own types of weather requirements. Here is a helpful chart to assist you in planning out your garden. Beans need to be planted April until Mid-October Beets can be planted between March and May, as well as August to October Broccoli needs to be planted between February and May, as well as August and Early November Cabbage can be planted between March and mid-June as well as late July and October Carrots need to be planted between March and mid-June as well as August to October Kale can be planted between March and May as well as August to mid-November Onions can be planted between March and August Peas can be planted mid-February to mid-March as well as mid-August to mid-October Tomatoes need to be planted between March and September After you have gathered your seeds and planned out what you are wanting to plant, it is time to start preparing your area as well as your tools. Don’t worry, we have you covered with some cool tips in that department as well. 1. If you plan on creating a large garden in your backyard, It is always a wise idea to clean up the area of debris that has landed there over the winter months. Things like branches or sticks and leaves can hide those new blooms, and you might step on them while working outside. This first step will keep your flowers intact. As the weather warms, those daffodils, lilies, and other tuberous flowers are ready to reach up and find some light. They want all the space they can to grow. Another thing, don’t forget to take a look at the surrounding bushes and trees for any branches that need to be trimmed before the foliage pops out. 3

2. Much like any other professional takes care of their tools, the gardener must maintain their garden tools. The garden can be a harsh environment, and it shows on your tools with scratches or bends and knicks. These problems, when compounded, can end up breaking your tools and even have the potential to hurt you or another person. Things like axes and other tools with long handles should be checked before use. Sharpening your tools is a must for proper use. This goes for the lawnmower and weedeater—new weedeater line and a scrape of the lawn blade will keep your tools running all summer. 3. Things are on their way. The tools are shining, the lilies are emerging, and, now, it is time to turn your eyes down to the soil. A good growing season starts with well worked land. Turning your soil with mulched leaves and compost will give your plants extra life through the hot summer months. Composting is a great way to defray some gardening costs, while also being helpful to the environment, but it is top notch compost that will give you overflowing harvests at the end of the season. 4. Making a plan is essential to a good season. Knowing what you plan to plant, where, and what you need to maintain the area are all critical to the health of your garden. Start by selecting the varieties of plants that you desire for your garden. Next, consult the amount of sun needed for each plant and make a drawing of your home. The drawing can help you see where shadows land during the day, giving a reprieve to the shade-loving plants, and the open areas are where you want the full-sun-loving plants. This will ensure that your plants perform to their peak, and it makes it easier to care for plants when they enjoy the planting area. 5. Maintenance is the last step. After the initial work of getting the garden areas ready, you have a couple of weeks to relax while you wait for your seedlings to emerge. During this time, you can search new plans for projects to fill the summer or for next year’s garden. Once your flowers begin to bloom, you can maintain the blooms by removing the dead ones (on most species) to promote new growth. Later in the spring, it is a good idea to mulch areas that you want to keep weeds out of and water in.

Are you wanting to plant a simple garden that you can take with you every PCS season? Yes, that is possible. Gardening is a hobby that many people inspire to pick up, and your lifestyle doesn’t have to keep you from partaking in it. There are ways to plant your dream garden inside your own home, so you can still test out your green thumb. A transportable garden can go wherever the military may send you. So, what do you need to do in order to start your own indoor garden? It’s easy. To begin, do you know what vegetables and herbs can survive indoors? Not all of them can. Here are a few that can truly flourish inside. Lettuce Greens Who doesn’t love some fresh lettuce on grilled burgers? Skip the store and plant your own this season. The pot for this plant needs to have a few drain holes and be placed in a sunny window. You will need to plant around 15 seeds directly under a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil damp and moist.

Carrots Glazed carrots are a go-to side dish in my family. Carrots are full of vitamins and nutrients, and they are great for indoor gardening. This vegetable will require a deep pot so that it has plenty room to grow. You will want to purchase a potting soil and fill the entire pot with the mixture. Plant your seeds about 1/4 inch in. Place the pot in a sunny window and keep the soil moist.

Kale Like the other leafy green mentioned above, Kale is super easy to grow and manage indoors. All you have to do is plant a few seeds in a medium sized pot about ¼ of the way down. Keep the soil damp and only harvest the large and fully grown leaves.

Scallions Onions are great when needing to add a little flavor to your dishes. Many call onions a staple ingredient. That is why growing it at home can be a huge money saver. Green onions can be planted by grabbing a green onion from the grocery store that has roots. Stick them directly into your soil pot and watch them grow.

Tomatoes Yes, tomatoes can live inside. Just make sure to place them in your sunniest window. They adore the sunshine. Make sure you fertilize your plant every two weeks and add a stake for support. Also, grab a large pot so they have plenty of room to grow.

Garden Design Ideas Gardening vertically has become all the rage, lately. All of your favorite gardening and remodeling shows are proving how popular this new trend is. Vertical gardens have hundreds and, maybe even, thousands of designs. An easy way to start is building onto your backyard fence. Vertical gardens work well in indoor spaces as well, especially the office. Neat ideas for little planters for succulents can be found with almost effortless searching. Composting is a great design idea for any gardener. This takes a lot of the food waste from your garbage and puts it into your garden for healthier, happier plants. A simple compost bin can be made using stakes and chicken wire. Placing the stakes in the ground to form a box shape (perhaps one per corner, like making a square) then wrapping chicken wire around the stakes and wiring the two ends of wire together. This keeps all of your materials inside a confined space while letting water, sun, and air to penetrate the compost pile. Start your pile with a bucket of soil, then add layers of leaves, soil, and refuse from the garden and your kitchen. Turn your compost pile every week to promote faster decomposition. Design in the garden has always been resourceful. Repurposing materials for your garden can give it another dimension of color, texture, and beauty, without hurting the old pocketbook. Think of the things you have stashed in your garage right now that with a few seconds of tinkering could become the next hanging planter out back; or the new wall planter you’ve always wanted on your front porch; or the perfect succulent container. You can find hundreds of websites that give you great ideas for repurposing old materials for your garden such as gardendesign.com. Water is not a feature we think of often because we are too busy watering our flowers to think of other things that may need it as well. Water features are a great way to include some new design elements in your garden while also doing our bee and bird friends a favor. Placing old vases around with water is an easy way to start. Some invest in pumps to make small water fountain features but be careful not to make it too powerful or it could defeat the purpose. In my garden, I have planters sitting in water trays filled with rocks. The rocks give the bees a place to land and rest while they drink off the rocks. Low maintenance is the key (for most!). Your garden depends on you to keep it up throughout the season, so invest wisely in plants that will work best with your schedule. Don’t buy plants that are susceptible to drought easily. Buy larger plants with colorful foliage and then add lower maintenance flowers around the base. This will give you the color you want, but it will keep you from shelling out dollars for each one that dies.

The world has been a crazy place over the last few months. The panic of Covid-19, also known as the Coronavirus, really flipped everything on its head. People were scared to leave their homes, groceries were hard to find, and it was easy to feel completely alone in the world. Thankfully, there were stories of kindness and love out there. These stories brought a smile to everyone’s faces during these difficult times. We asked our readers what acts of kindness that they personally encountered over the last few weeks, and the submissions brought a smile to our faces. “I was in Walmart and I noticed an elderly couple struggling to find essential supplies. They looked to be around 80 years old, which put them at high risk of this virus. I approached them and offered the ability to shop from my stockpile. I used to be a huge couponer, so I was able to provide them with toilet paper, body wash, and more. Their smiles were worth more than gold.” Danny from Florida “My neighborhood put out a blessings table. People were placing things out in public that others may be in search of. The sign said, “take one, leave one.” There were wipes, canned goods, toilet paper, and more. The ability for everyone to come together was awesome.” Taylor from Virginia

“In my subdivision a group of kids woke up super early and wrote encouraging messaging all over the sidewalks. It was such a cute surprise to wake up to. Those kids really made people smile during a rough time.” Callie from Georgia “Many of my friends and family started gathering material and supplies to make masks for our local hospitals and elderly. We had 16-year-old boys sitting down and learning how to sew so that they could help the cause. It was very sweet.” Wanda from Tennessee “It was my mission to buy a pack of toilet paper anytime I went to the store so that I could bless someone in need. Before having to stop, I was able to gift a person with toilet paper about 10 times. I know it wasn’t much, but I just wanted to help anyway that I could.” Patricia from Oklahoma “I was in line picking up a food order and the man in front of me tipped the waitress $200 and told her to split it up with any other waitresses that may need it. She started crying and thanked him repeatedly. It was very heart warming.” Kendra from Louisiana “My 3-year-old was sick and running a fever. My husband is currently deployed, and all grocery delivery services were booked for days out. I didn’t know what to do. But a kind military spouse dropped off some children’s Tylenol in my mailbox for me. She was an angel.” Kaylee from Texas

Quarantine has caused many local families to get creative and find new ways to pass their time. Whether it be through volunteering, donating, crafting, or refurbishment, many people have shown a new side of themselves. We asked local spouses to show off their quarantine projects, and here are what they have been doing to keep busy.

Coffee Filter Flowers by OneCreativeMommy.com

Materials: Coffee filters (2 per flower) Tissue paper cut to the same size as the coffee filters (1 per flower) I used a design with dark pink on light pink, but you could use a solid color. Green chenille stems (pipe cleaners) Scissors Glue Watercolor paints - You can substitute food coloring for watercolor paint, but your colors will be very limited. Large watercolor brush Directions:

25

1. Fold each coffee filter into 8 sections. (Fold the filter in half three times.) 2. Cut a single petal shape from your folded filter. Don’t cut the sides off. Just cut an arch shape off the top. (See image above.) 3. Unfold the filter and paint it with watercolors. (Don’t dilute the colors much at all. Put a very small amount of water in the bottom of a cup. Now wet your watercolor cake and fill your brush with as much color as possible. Put the brush in the cup of water and swish it around to add the color to the water. Add color a few more times, and then use your paint/water to paint the coffee filters. We used three colors and mixed them on the filters. (Red, dark pink, and purplish pink — I just made that color up. Can you tell?)

4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11.

Allow the filters to dry completely. Fold your circles of tissue paper and cut them into flower shapes in the same way you cut the filters. Snip a tiny hole into the center of each coffee filter and tissue paper piece. Roll down one end of a pipe cleaner, and slide it into the hole on the first coffee filter. (Roll down about 1/2 inch. This forms the inside of the flower.) Grasp the filter in your hand and fold it up (away from the stem). Squish it. Add the tissue paper layer and fold up and squish. Add another coffee filter flower and fold up and squish. If desired, add a tiny bit of glue where the base of the flower and the pipe cleaner connect to keep the petals in place.

If you plan to put your flowers in a vase, you might want these items as well: One small glass vase (I got mine at The Dollar Store) Lime green drinking straws (mine are from a pack of blues and greens found at Walmart) 1 narrow plastic drinking cup 1 container of salt

The flowers are perfect as is for a photo prop or to lay the bouquet on it’s side on a shelf. If you want to put the flowers in a vase, you’ll need sturdier stems. For sturdier stems, cut the holes in the flower petals large enough to fit a drinking straw. Use the same method for creating the flowers as above, but slide the pipe cleaner inside a drinking straw before you add the flowers. Once you have shaped the flowers, add a bead of glue at the base of each flower (around the straw) and inside the petals (around the straw) so that the petals don’t slide up and down the straw. Place an upside down narrow plastic cup inside your vase, and then add the flowers. Pour a container of salt over the cup, and allow the salt to fill in the area around and above the cup. (You can skip the plastic cup and just use more salt. I chose to use the cup so that I didn’t waste as much salt.)
