Melissa Wells is happily on block leave with her husband and daughter this month!
Where has this year gone? It’s already summer and the youth of Fort Campbell are out in full force! This month, we are giving you just a small sampling of activities to keep you and your children from falling into the summertime blues. June wouldn’t be the same without Father’s Day and our 3rd annual character event. Read more on page 21. Check out why “The Army Rocks” according to our essay winners on page 3 as we celebrate the Army’s 236th Birthday. Part of why we rock here at Fort Campbell, is the award winning golf course. Learn more about what Cole Park Golf Club has to offer on page 10. After enjoying a round in the morning, why not take the Family out on a hike and a picnic in the afternoon. We have several beautiful trails from which to choose and you never know what you might see! Don’t forget your four legged Family members. The traditional picnic recipes featured on page 18 are quite the tasty treat. Wrap up the evening with a backyard campfire and s‘mores, of course! Keep safety in mind, and have a fire extinguisher handy. I can’t think of a better way to end the evening than looking at my girls’ chocolate covered, smiling faces and snuggling with my husband around a toasty fire. Whether you love the great outdoors or enjoy the air conditioned coolness of our indoor activities, MWR is your network of services.

THE ARMY ROCKS! 2011 MWR Life Essay/Poetry Contest to Celebrate the Army Birthday By Melissa Wells June 14, 2011 marks the celebration of the Army’s 236th birthday. In celebration of this momentous occasion, we at MWR Life decided to ask some of our smallest citizens to help us celebrate. The theme of this year’s celebration is “America’s Army: The Strength of the Nation.” According to Army Public Affairs, “Army Strong goes beyond physical endurance and mental preparedness. It encompasses an indomitable spirit and high ethical and moral values. These are not only desirable traits in a person but in a Nation that wishes to live up to the ideals and vision of its founders.” Some of our MWR School Age Services (SAS) children used this theme to tell us what they thought about the Army and what it meant from their point of view. These children write from the heart with true feeling; without the filter that as adults we sometimes use. Celebrate the Army; celebrate being a Spouse, Soldier, Civilian, Retiree, and celebrate the Army’s 236th birthday by reading these touching essays. We are proud to announce the two winners of this competition with their essays featured.
In the 5 – 8 year old category, the winner is Alexis Radcliff, age 8.

The winner of the 9 – 11 year old category is Dariona Dash, age 11.
It is so touching to read these essays from the perspective of Military Children. Their strength and courage are essential to our future. The past ten years have been especially difficult for military Families due to the multiple deployments. When looking at the age ranges of these participants, it hits home that none of them have known a time without war. That makes their positive attitude and outlook even more extraordinary. In the words of one of our winners, Alexis Radcliffe, “The Army Rocks!” Happy Birthday Army! We would also like to thank all of the School Age Services children that participated in our contest. Honorable Mention Winners: Kaitlynn Rowe, Age 5 Havanna Borland, Age 6 Ashantee Wright, Age 8 Eve Meyer, Age 9 Alexander Maffia, Age 10 Alissa Rowe, Age 9

By Tara Goodson “Good golf is easier to play – and far more pleasant – than bad golf.” ~ Babe Didrikson Zaharias. June is Women’s Golf Month and I had the opportunity to speak with two local Spouses who encouraged me to pick up a set of clubs and play. Years ago, my sister was the first person to try to teach me to play golf. To say that it wasn’t successful is an understatement and it made me very leery to try once again. Fortunately, we have our own golf pro at Cole Park Golf Club. PGA Master Professional, David Normand, offers lessons both one-on-one and in a group setting. The lesson typically lasts about an hour and can be scheduled by calling Dave at (270) 798-4906 or emailing him at david.normandjr@us.army.mil. If you are interested in the individual instruction time, you can choose from $50 for a single lesson or $125 for a package of three. Dave also let me know he now offers group lessons that often times are less intimidating to new golfers. Grab three of your friends and for only $20 per person you get an interactive learning session! Dave is enthusiastic and patient and encouraged me to schedule a lesson with him. Make sure you check out www.fortcampbellmwr.com for new and exciting golf specials for women this month.
Haerin Beckman, a local Spouse that regularly plays with the Saturday morning command group teams, is so exuberant about golf that she plays as often as she can. She feels there is no reason to be a golf widow and challenges the Spouses at Fort Campbell to learn the game. Her husband introduced her to the game when they were stationed at Tinker Air Force base. Thirteen years later, she attributes her love for the game as the reason she is in such great shape. Haerin has always been athletic, but said this is by far her favorite game. Her favorite sound is the metallic ‘tink’ of her ball landing in the cup after a great putt. She uses golf to de-stress and focus, it allows her to enjoy the different seasons and gets her outside the house and away from daily chores. “Just grab the club and play, this is life,” is what she told me when I brought up my challenge with learning to play. I must admit seeing Haerin in her adorable pink golfing outfit, learning she has three young children and is in such fantastic shape, makes me want to try again. The average course is between three and seven miles, and when you carry your own clubs you are only adding to your calorie burn. Golf builds confidence. “You know when you have the right club, the right movement, and the right contact. It gives you the perfect sound and you know your ball will fly.” Haerin stressed being sensitive to the conditions of the course; weather is far more important to your score than the manpower of swinging at the ball. Tina Davis, another local Spouse, told me that golf helped her establish values that can be carried forth in all aspects of life. Honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment are nine core values according to The First Tee. This organization has a mission to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf! Cole Park Golf Club participates in this wonderful program. Tina stated she attributes golf to the reason she gives everything she does her best shot. It tests your patience and endurance and is very tough mentally but also the most rewarding. Tina was able to further her education due to an athletic scholarship and recommends any young female that shows an interest, to pursue the game. There are many scholarship opportunities
available and it will allow you to travel the country gaining experience and seeing new and exciting locations. If you haven’t hit the links in a while, why not revisit the sport during June. Pick up a new sport and learn to find yourself again while enjoying the beautiful course here on Fort Campbell. For additional information, please contact Cole Park Golf Club at (270) 798-4906.

Open the Door and Sleep Under the Stars By Rachelle Manson As more and more Soldiers re-deploy from overseas, and a large number of daddies will be home for Father’s Day this year. June makes for the perfect opportunity to spend quality time outdoors with the whole Family making up for lost time. It may come to a surprise, but the month of June celebrates more than just Father’s Day. Celebrations include the Great American Camp Out on June 26 as well as Great Outdoors Month. The Great American Backyard Campout is a National event that encourages individuals, Families and friends to camp out together for one night. This year the camp out will take place on Saturday, June 25.
Great Outdoors Month supports the Great American Camp Out and promotes both children and adults of all ages to live healthy, active outdoor lives and to embrace America’s landscape. Our parks, forests, refuges and other public lands and waters should be taken care of properly and most importantly, be put to good use. June is the perfect time to take advantage of the campgrounds and outdoor fun on post with fellow military Families in celebration of Great Outdoors Month, National Campout Day, and Father’s Day.
www.fortcampbellmwr.com
Fort Campbell has two public campgrounds which are near the outdoor activities on post. Fletcher’s Fork is right next to the 12 and under fishing pond as well as the skeet range. Eagles Rest is located directly across from the Riding Stables. Both campgrounds are RV friendly and have electrical, water and sewer hookups. Bathrooms, showers, laundry facilities and picnic tables are also available at each campsite. Don’t have an RV? No worries. Tents are always welcome. Celebrate National Campout Day the traditional way and sleep on nature’s floor following a fun-filled day or evening outdoors. There is a small fee of $20 per night to camp at both of the campgrounds. Leave the television, video games, computer and other electronics at home and spend quality Family time playing games and sitting around a campfire making s’mores and telling stories. If that isn’t enough fun, participating in recreational, outdoor activities such as fishing, biking, hiking, nature watching, etc. is another way to spend time with the whole Family while maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Fishing is a wonderful way to experience the outdoors first-hand. Fort Campbell has two
lakes, two stocked trout streams, and numerous beaver ponds. There’s also a children’s fishing pond. The pond is very close to Fletcher’s Fork RV Park and doesn’t require an area assignment to fish. Near the landfill on post, there is a handicap accessible fishing area available. This pond is located in area seven and Children 17 and under may also fish at this pond (an area assignment is required). Those who fish at this particular site often catch bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and trout. Since there’s no hunting during the month of June, Families are welcome to go hiking around the training area on post. Trail rides at the riding stables would also make for a great activity for the Family to enjoy during the whole month. Other activities to keep in mind are archery, paintball and skeet shooting. Any of these activities would be the perfect way to celebrate Great Outdoors Month, the Great American Campout, as well as Father’s Day. For more information and to register for the National Wildlife Federation's Great American Backyard Campout, go to www.backyardcampout.org. You’ll receive a link to help you start planning your campout while have the ability to support the National Wildlife Federation. Recipes, activities and crafts ideas are also available upon registering. The National Wildlife Federation urges everyone to spend June 25 outdoors and have fun while improving the health of children across the nation. America’s Great Outdoors offers benefits for mind, body and spirit. Take advantage and embrace it! S’mores with a twist: Instead of using milk chocolate bars, use chocolate bars with pistachio, fruit, caramel and almonds for added flavor. Dark and white chocolate also adds a new spin to the original.

Dog Days of Summer By Erin Andrews With summer rapidly approaching, outdoor recreational activities are at the forefront of our minds. What are the kids going to do on summer break? Are we taking a vacation this year? What am I going to do with the pets? This year, let’s all make a vow to slow down and enjoy a vacation with our pets! Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities with our four-legged friends. Activities to enjoy include: taking walks, going for hikes, heading to the beach, going camping, playing ball or throwing the Frisbee. Road trips, dog parks and/or doggie play groups are also great options. Did you know there are two dog parks on post, one by Gate 3 on Bastogne Avenue and the other on Morgan Road by Gate 7? Animals, in a way, are just like humans; they enjoy doing things just as much as we do. Who wants to be stuck in a kennel or the house on a gorgeous day? Getting out and

doing something will not only make you feel better, it will make your pet feel better too. Getting outdoors with your pet provides an outlet for their energy. Dogs build up a certain amount of energy every day that needs to be expended. A good walk, hike, or outdoor
play can significantly calm a hyper or energetic dog. In addition, a calmer dog is more likely to obey the owner’s commands while working on obedience. Being outside also provides both mental and physical stimulation, as well as much needed social interactions. Exposing your dog to a wide variety of things will create a more confident and stable pet. By being out with your pet, you will increase the bonding experience between each other. Let’s not forget the health benefits for you and your pet; any type of exercise will improve and lengthen the quality of life for both of you. And last but not least, it really is just a great reason to go outside and have fun. Mohandas K. Gandhi once said: “There is more to life than increasing its speed.”

What Father’s Day Means to Me By Alex Krohn Being a father of five children, Father’s Day is truly a holiday near and dear to my heart. To me, it is a time not only for children to show appreciation of their fathers, but more so, a day for fathers to reflect and deepen the relationship they have with their children. What father doesn’t get excited when their child draws them a picture, makes them a card or
simply gives them a hug and says “Happy Father’s Day Daddy!” During my years of military service, I was separated from my children over many holidays. The kids always knew we would celebrate the missed event at the next possible chance, but it didn’t make it easier. Now that I am out of the Army and able to be home for most holidays, I have a deeper admiration for the Soldiers that are unable to be home with their Families due to mission requirements. It brings me comfort to know that even though they can’t be with their children now, they will soon be reunited. There are many times over the course of a year that being a father is not the easiest of jobs. Whether you have to discipline when needed, always be the voice of reason, or seeming to be “the bad guy”; the good things always outweigh the tough. Being a father has been, hands down, the most rewarding thing for me in my life.
Nothing makes Father’s Day more special for me than to sit and watch my kids play, to see them growing up, and know that the morals and beliefs that I have taught them have taken hold. Witnessing those values coming to fruition, and to know that because of my role, I can help their future be filled with promise and hope. That is what Father’s Day means to me.
