Fort Knox Gets the Blues By Jennifer Dent

Fort Knox Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will be presenting their Blues Fest on September 12, 2015 at the Eastman Park Amphitheater beginning at 3 p.m. This Family fun atmosphere is FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and will showcase the incredible talent of Toronzo Cannon, Edward David Anderson, Jarekus Singleton and the Nick Schnebelen Band. Toronzo Cannon grew up listening to soulful legends like Junior Wells, Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters. “It wasn’t just the music that got me, but the effect on the people.” Inspiration from Freddie, B.B and Albert, a little Hendrix and some 70’s R&B/Soul led him to develop his own powerful, gospel-flavored vocal style and electrifying stage presence. His second and most recent CD release, “John the Conquer Root” has been nominated for a Blues Music Award in Memphis for “Best Rock/Blues CD”, and inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2013. Edward David Anderson is an artist as ancient as he is modern. In a time when the music business desperately flails about, grasping at any new trend that will save its sinking ship, he exists far outside its confines. Best known for his work with the revered Midwestern rock band Backyard Tire Fire who released a string of acclaimed albums in the previous decade, Anderson returns to the national stage with his highly anticipated solo debut, Lies & Wishes. Produced by Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin, it finds Anderson creating his own mythology through a collection of songs that embrace vulnerability, while remaining grounded in his working class roots. Jackson, Mississippi’s award-winning guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, 29-year-old Jarekus Singleton, is one of the brightest, most exciting young stars on the blues scene today. His cuttingedge, streetwise music – melding contemporary and traditional blues with rock energy and hip-hop wordplay – turns audiences of all ages into devoted fans. With his blazing guitar licks and strong, soulful voice, Singleton brings his up-to-the-minute take on the blues to every song he writes and performs. From ferocious and funky, to slow and steamy, to smoking hot, Singleton is a young blues master carrying the blues into the future.

“Slick” Nick Schnebelen is a well-known Kansas City based roots and blues influenced artist. As the lead guitarist, majority song writer, and co-vocalist of the band Trampled Under Foot, Nick established himself as a heavy weight contender in the Blues, Roots and Americana worlds of music. A multi-instrumentalist, Nick combines drums, guitar and singing to make for a great show. In addition to the soulful sounds of live blues, there will also be a variety of Family style activities available. Inflatables will be on site for the little ones to enjoy, as well as a large blues themed art mural for them to color. Food, beverages, snacks and beer will be available for purchase. If you’re interested in a little competition, a double elimination corn hole tournament will be held at 5 pm. Thirty-two teams of two will compete to win cash prizes. 1st place is $300, 2nd place is $200 and 3rd place is $100; and it’s only $20 per team to register. “This is the third time FMWR has presented this event” stated Chris Dent, Fort Knox Community Programs Coordinator. “It gives us an opportunity to provide a variety of musical styles for Fort Knox and the local Community, in a Family friendly environment.”

Entrance will be through Chaffee Gate. A photo ID will be required for anyone 16 years of age or older. Festival parking will be at Fort Knox High School with free shuttle service to the event provided. Please, no coolers or pets allowed. So grab your Family and come out to enjoy live music, fun games and great food in an enjoyable open-air environment. For more information on this event, please visit www.knoxmwr.com or call (502) 624-1413.

The Great Outdoors By Chris Dent

Adults and children alike benefit from outdoor physical activity. Participating in sports and recreation provides people of all ages with an opportunity to meet and build relationships with others. We all benefit from relaxation and play. Playfulness is built into our biology. And when parents and children recreate together, social bonds are improved. For children, play is more than just a way of having fun. It’s also a way of experimenting and trying new things: of testing themselves and expanding their limits, of training muscles and developing minds. Play is also a way of learning how to live together: of learning how to compete and cooperate, to make friends and acquire social skills. Yes, play is fun but for children, it’s also an integral part of learning and growing.

some leisure time, we're more likely to zone out in front of the TV or computer than engage in fun, rejuvenating play like we did as children. But just because we’re adults, that doesn't mean we have to take ourselves so seriously and make life all about work. We all need to play. Fort Knox Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation is your ticket to recreate through recreation. CYSS provides an abundance of recreational opportunities for kids. Activities range from music classes with SKIES Unlimited to football with youth sports. Parents can also get involved as volunteer coaches. Fort Knox Adventure Programs provides the opportunity to experience a wide range of outdoor recreation from white water rafting, to backpacking, to caving. The four fitness centers allow individuals to exercise and relieve stress while building the body. Anderson Pool and the Water Park provide a playful aquatic experience. Equipment Check Out has everything you need for a great Family or Unit outing. Camp Carlson is an outdoor experience you cannot miss. Warrior Adventure Quest is an Army wide program designed to help Soldiers deal with stressors in their post deployment, and day to day lives. The program introduces Soldiers to outdoor recreation activities as a way to relieve stress. The program is free to Units and is conducted during normal duty hours.

Adults benefit from play, and the many benefits can be summarized in the word “recreation”, or re-create. With recreation and play we re-create, refresh, and revitalize ourselves. We speed our recovery from work and stress, reduce painful emotions and foster feelings of happiness and joy. In our hectic, modern lives, many of us focus so heavily on work and family commitments that we never seem to have time for pure fun. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, we’ve stopped playing. When we do carve out

Here are just a few reasons to get out and play: to learn, to create, to feel challenged, to calm and focus ourselves, to feel better, to improve health, and for the fun and joy of it. See you soon at an FMWR activity, program, facility, or event.

SAMUEL ADAMS CONTINUING BREWHOUSE: TO GROW manager. Neal and Kelley like to lead by example, from busing tables to flipping burgers in the kitchen, they do everything they can to help the team get the job done. Neal states, “I see change and growth every day. With the training being implemented, and the one on one mentoring in every department, I see strong confidence on the floor.” MWR’s Chief of Business Division, Melinda Stickle states, “Our goal with hiring more staff and management, as well as the increase in training, is to normalize our operations in order to better fit the volume of business we receive.” With these changes, current and new customers can expect to see a faster, friendlier, and more enjoyable experience when visiting the Samuel Adams Brewhouse. Carissa Sweigart, an employee and beer connoisseur from Samuel Adams, educated the staff on the different types of beers being served during each season. With the knowledge of the taste and texture of each brew, they can make recommendations on which beer will pair well with each dish.

By Armida Hoffman Fort Knox Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation would like to thank all the patrons of the Samuel Adams Brewhouse for their loyal support as this new business progresses towards becoming an exceptional establishment on Fort Knox. The Samuel Adams Brewhouse is a new venue that is continuing to improve its capacity to better serve the Fort Knox and surrounding communities. The staff and management teams have been working diligently towards this goal, and the results are outstanding.

One of the staples of Samuel Adams beers is they brew special batches during each season. Samuel Adams Octoberfest has a blend of hearty malts and notes of caramel for a deep, smooth flavor that is perfect for this season. If you have never been to the Samuel Adams Brewhouse, come out and try a Lager Burger topped with bacon, and two different cheeses. And it’s made in-house signature Boston Lager sauce and it has become one of the local favorites. Another staple of the Samuel Adams Brewhouse is their wings. Try them next time you come in with the honey barbeque sauce that is also made in-house. Stop by the Samuel Adams Brewhouse today located at 2723 Spearhead Division Loop, and partake in a quality pub experience that will have you coming back again and again.

The Samuel Adams Brewhouse is an exciting fresh venture, and the first of its kind here at Fort Knox. Samuel Adams Brewing Company is a prestigious American Craft Brewer that has produced quality craft beers since 1985 for beer connoisseurs around the globe. This caliber of business is highly sought after at Fort Knox, and MWR is proud to have this partnership with Samuel Adams. Fort Knox has welcomed Samuel Adams Brewhouse with incredible interest and support. Jean Neal, the operations manager at Samuel Adams Brewhouse, saw the need for more employees to join the staff and management, due to the level of interest. To expand and develop the business at Samuel Adams Brewhouse, additional employees have been hired to deliver increased timeliness, accuracy, and service to the vast quantity of patrons. Along with the new wait staff, bartenders, and kitchen staff, John Kelley joined the team as the new assistant knoxmwr.com

Don’t Miss the Opportunity to Find the Gold! By Viviane Arnold

A successful move is not a matter of chance; it is the result of planning and hard work. At the center of these efforts is you, the Soldier, Family member and Department of Defense (DoD) civilian. If you expect a good move, you must play an active role during Pre-Move, In Transit and Post Arrival. The Fort Knox Army Community Service (ACS), Relocation Readiness Program helps ease the stress of the relocation process by providing means which minimize stress and the unknown factors associated with moving to a new Camp, Post or Station where you’ve never been to before. The focus of the Relocation Program is to ensure information, guidance, and assistance to provide support for Active Duty and Reserve Component service members, Family members, and DoD civilians who move from one Community to another.

Spouses are highly encouraged to participate and childcare may be provided on a space available basis for children enrolled in Child Youth School Service (CYSS). Lunch will be served at no cost.

Off the Page Takes Barr Library’s Author Series to the Next Level By Michael Steinmacher

Frustrated that you may have missed an author appearance at Barr Library? Was there a question you wanted to ask that did not get asked? If the answer to either of those questions is “yes,” you will be interested in Off the Page, Barr Memorial Library’s new podcast focusing on authors, their work and insight into the creative process. The podcast, the first of its kind in Army libraries, found its inspiration in Library

customers lamenting that they had missed an event with a favorite local, regional, or national bestselling author. It is not uncommon for Library staff to be quizzed after an event about whether or not the author’s presentation was recorded. Because of complex legal reasons related to recording and performance rights, the events are not; Off the Page was born from that limitation. Book lovers can now hear from authors in interviews recorded by the Library. The authors are posed frequently asked questions heard at Authors at Your Library programs, like “How do you go about writing?” “How do you edit your work?” and “Who do you like to read?” The answers are frequently unexpected, with International Bestselling Author Tess Gerritsen talking about her decided low-tech approach to writing drafts of her books, to New York Times Bestselling Author Jim DeFelice, co-author of

knoxmwr.com

American Sniper, offering a frank assessment of what the “New York Times Bestselling” label means to him. New episodes are added monthly and guests are not always tied to new release books or Library events. Some guests will headline Authors at Your Library events at the Library. Others are popular past speakers, like New York Times Bestselling Author Steve Berry and Christian Fiction writer Ann Gabhart. Some installments will feature authors who have not even appeared at the Library, like acclaimed

suspense novelist Daniel Palmer and Amish fiction writer Leslie Gould. As with the author events, the intent is to offer a variety of authors, speaking on a variety of topics and genres so that readers can be exposed to a broad range of ideas. Those interested can listen the way they want. The podcast is available on iTunes. Users can add the program through their favorite podcast app with the RSS address: feeds.feedburner.com/barrlibrarypodcast. PC users can access the interviews through barrlibrarypodcast.blogspot.com to listen in through the web browser, or sign up for e-mail deliveries.
