Sadowski Center Opens

By Heather Whelan

“Shoot the Duck” and “Limbo” are only a few of the games that are played at the new Sadowski Skate Center. The center formally rolled open its doors on June 13 with a ribbon cutting ceremony when Major General, Jeff Smith; Colonel, Bruce Jenkins; and Family and MWR staff cut the ribbon and opened the doors. Over 300 children and their Families flooded the facility with enthusiasm, ready to put their skating abilities to the test. In addition, Louisville’s “Derby City Roller Girls” made an appearance and presented a demonstration, signed autographs, interacted with the crowd, and gave away tickets for their next event to one lucky fan. “We were very pleased with the turnout at the grand opening. To be able to witness Families skating and spending quality time together was a wonderful feeling. We are so delighted that MWR is able to offer this state-of-the-art facility to our Community,” said Shaunte Quaine, Sadowski Center Manager. According to the Fort Knox Public Affairs Office, the Sadowksi Center, formally known as the Sadowksi Field House, was known as one of the central points on the installation. Because of the building’s wide open space, it was the hub for playing basketball and hosting large-scale events. Legendary music artists Bing Crosby and Jerry Lee Lewis even performed for Soldiers inside this building many years ago. There is great history associated with the building as it was named in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant, Joseph Sadowski of the 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division for his heroism display on the battlefield in France during World War II. This facility has seen many Soldiers deploy and return and has had the distinct privilege of hosting dignitaries such as President, Franklin D. Roosevelt and General, George S. Patton. The Sadowski Center is available to rent with a maximum capacity of 225 people. In addition, three multi-purpose rooms are available to rent, perfect for birthday parties, business meetings, FRG

meetings and much more! The facility also features a full service snack bar and an arcade room. Private lockers are available to rent to store your personal items while you skate. Sadowksi will also be offering activities through Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS.) Dawn Caudill, Assistant Sports Director says, “We are very excited about the opportunity to use Sadowksi for our activities.” Indoor Archery has already begun at Sadowski Center through CYSS. “In addition to regular skating, the facility will also provide a venue for official functions, such as deployment and re-deployment staging areas and Change of Commands. This facility is truly a wonderful “new” asset to Fort Knox, and we encourage everyone to stop by and visit,” states Quaine. The Sadowksi Skate Center is open Thursdays from 6 -10 p.m.; Fridays from 5 – 11 p.m.; Saturdays from noon to 11 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 – 6 p.m. The cost is $3 on Thursday and Sunday and $7 on Friday and Saturday. The cost includes skate rental with unlimited skating. For more information, call (502) 624-3030.

By Stephanie G.J. Powell

It’s that time of year again when the dogs take over the Fort Knox Water Park at the fourth annual Pooch Plunge on September 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Help your dog beat the heat during these lazy dog days of summer with a splash in the pool! The first hour is reserved for dogs 30 pounds and under. At 10 a.m., the park will open up to dogs of all sizes. “This is a great opportunity to bring your canine friends to wash off the summer heat with a “plunge” into the pool,” said Aquatics Assistant Manager, Jasmine Elder. “We are expecting a big turnout based on the growing popularity in past years with 68 dogs in 2011 and 89 dogs in 2012!” As your doggie frolics in the sun and water, door prizes and contests that include the cutest dog, best trained dog and owner-dog look-alike will be offered. Other giveaways like free doggie bags with goodies will be given to the first 100 pooch participants. In addition, several pet organizations and vendors 7

Devers and the Boys & Girls Club Celebrate

Middle School & Teen Families Day By Kerry Weintraub

Parents do you want to show your middle school and teenage children you still have what it takes, and bond with them at the same time? A little friendly competition is just what you need to show them you’ve still got it! The Fort Knox Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) will be hosting the annual Devers and the Boys and Girls Club Day for Middle School and Teen Families Celebration on September 22 from 2 – 6 p.m. at Devers Middle School & Teen Center. This celebration is for children 6th grade and up and their parents. The Boys and Girls Clubs of America Day for Kids is a national campaign to celebrate and honor youth through the gift of parents spending meaningful time with their children. Boys and Girls Clubs across the nation celebrate this day on the same Saturday each year, usually the third Saturday of September. “The Army Youth Program and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America partnership affords Army Youth Programs access to research developed curriculum, program resources, marketing materials, programs that recognize youth accomplishments, and funding resources that enhance opportunities for Military Youth,” explained Eddie J. Ragland, Devers Youth Services Director, when asked why this event is so important at Fort Knox. “We want to have a special Family event for our youth at Devers that gets our Middle School and Teen program parents more involved in what their youths do, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to celebrate our youth and their Families by having the Devers and the Boys and Girls Club Day for Middle School and Teen Families Celebration,” said Ragland. Parents will compete with their middle schoolers or teens against other parents and middle schoolers or teens throughout the day in Family com petitions such as: an obstacle course, Family relay, sack races, tug-of-war, computer lab, scavenger hunt, laser tag war, basketball shootknoxmwr.com

ing, volleyball, and much more! The winning Family members will receive a plaque with second and third place winners receiving a trophy. Winners will also receive gift certificates to use at specific MWR facilities. All participants will receive a t-shirt. Water and healthy snacks will be provided throughout the day. At the conclusion of the event, hamburgers, hotdogs and side items will tbe served. There will be no activities for children below the 6th grade level. However, child care will be available at the CDC for those Families that would like to participate and have younger children. To make reservations for child care, call Kids on Site at (502) 624-7413. YOUR JOB SEARCH STARTS HERE Employment Readiness Program By Iva Pearlstein

Primarily designed for Military Spouses, although others with Military affiliations are also eligible, the Family Employment Readiness Program under the Army Community Service (ACS) umbrella offers a variety of services to help its clients land a civilian job. Program Manager, Larry Keene advises, “Critical factors in the employment search include advance planning and networking.” He says all job seekers need to be prepared. “It can take months from the time you start looking until you are actually on the payroll,” states Keene. Although the services are available for Active Duty Military, Retirees and their Family members, the Employment Readiness Program is mainly there to offer support to Military Spouses. Keene knows from personal experience with his wife how difficult it is for Military Spouses to maintain a career in the civilian sector when they must relocate every few years. “This has been a strong motivator for me and I, too, want to help others in similar situations and this is one of the reasons I take great pride in this job,” said Keene. A broad range of services are included in the Employment Readiness Program. Clients can either make appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays or use the walk-in hours available 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Come prepared with your resume, cover letters and questions. Those planning retirement from Active Duty Military must have a resume as part of the process and the Employment Readiness Program can help with the formulation of a resume. Additionally, there are computers with internet access available for those in need of computer access.

Celebrate Nine in Thirty By William D. Corlew III

With the overabundance of daily bad news, there are numerous reasons to get excited about the next day. Tomorrow is always special because it gives us something to look forward to, especially if we recently went through a bad day. For example: late for work, it’s raining and you forgot your umbrella, your coffee cup sprang a leak on your brand new Coach purse, your dog decided to use the indoor restroom, you forgot to pay your cell phone bill last month, you realize that you didn’t apply deodorant this morning and my personal favorite - as you lock the door to your house, you discover that your keys are not in your hand. Whether it’s Pay Day, Hump Day, or Friday, tomorrow is sure to promise a break from the past bad day, or better yet, comic relief from a horrendous week. Take, for example, the month of September – occurs once every year, wedged between August and October; a rather mundane and obscure month, right? As a matter of fact, September is essentially the month you see more people exercising, preparing for the semi-annual Army Physical Fitness Test in October and September is also the kick-off to a new season of NFL! Football aside, it’s the most unique month of the entire year for other reasons. Here’s why: the month of September consists of nine characters, making it the longest-spelled month of the year, and it is the ninth month of the year. Additionally, you may choose to abbreviate September using either SEP or SEPT (the only month that offers a choice of using an abbreviation with four characters). September and December are the only two months of the year that share the exact same days each year. This means that the 1st day of the month will always occur on similar corresponding days and this year we even get an opportunity to celebrate the first Friday the 13th for 2013 (if you miss it, don’t worry, it will return in December). For my old-school readers, one of the most popular songs of all times by Earth, Wind, and Fire opens with, “Do you remember the 21st of September?” Coincidently, September 21 just happens to be the first day of autumn. Respectively, in the United States, we distinguish Labor Day and Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance to honor the memory of our loved ones and fellow citizens who lost their lives as the result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, as well as Constitution Day and POW/MIA Recognition Day. Furthermore, during September, we recognize the achievements and contributions of Americans for National Hispanic Heritage Month as well as the athletic knoxmwr.com

prowess of young Americans for National Little League Month. However, according to www.emotionscards.com and www.holidayinsights.com there are many other reasons to celebrate the month of September. Honey Month, Piano Month, Better Breakfast Month, Self Improvement Month, and Baby Safety Month - who knew September could bring such a variety?

On the other hand, September yields acknowledgment to some rather odd and quite humorous celebrations that seem to contradict other daily observances within the same month. For example, September 5 is Be Late for Something Day and September 6 is Fight Procrastination Day so if you are thinking (like me) of arriving to work a few hours late on the 5 and explain to your supervisor, “Don’t worry – I’ll make it up tomorrow, during Fight Procrastination Day”, you may find your career potential, potentially in peril. Nonetheless, procrastinators always have great excuses for their shortcomings. They may choose to put off (procrastinate) their late day until Friday the 13th, in order to participate in Blame Some One Else Day. But a word of caution for all procrastinators and ardent believers in the mystic of Friday the 13th being a day of ill luck – Friday the 13th is also Fortune Cookie Day and Defy Superstition Day. For all you sugar aficionados, there are even days in September that rival the finest confectioners of Saint Valentine’s Day: Chocolate Milk Shake Day, on September 12 and National Cream Filled Donut Day, September 14. Now, I’m extremely tolerant to any sugary nutrient; I think any day is appropriate for a box or two of Shipley’s donuts or a baker’s dozen of Krispy Kremes. Nevertheless, for whatever reason you decide to celebrate a day in September or any month, have fun and make time to spend with others. While doing so, maybe you can end the exhaustive debate passed from great-grandparents to those who are self-professed fashionistas: is it acceptable to wear white after Labor Day, or not? 18
