For me Christmas is about sharing time with family and friends, it also provides me with the opportunity to take time out for quiet reflection on another year almost past. I have always had a passion for jewellery and after taking a foundation course in Art and Design, I went on to take a degree course in Jewellery and Metalwork at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, graduating in 1999. I worked for several jewellery companies since graduating, but in 2009 I decided to start Mila Jewellery and work on my own designs. I take a lot of my inspiration from nature and my surroundings. Colour and texture play an important role in my designs and I mainly work in silver. Lesley has been making Jewellery for over 15 years. Finally she decided to enrol in evening classes on silver smithing, from that point she was hooked and the obsession began. Whilst taking the certification she discovered Metal clay. This was new and very exciting another obsession began. She took class after class and finally became a senior Art Clay instructor. Below is a comment taken from her blog after she had been visiting an aquarium and photographing fish. “When a bead-maker visits an aquarium, he/she thinks of how to MAKE the fish. What is your background and what led you to create your own business? I took a 3 year degree course in Jewellery and Metalwork which is where I gained my basic design and making skills, but then went on to build on these through working in the jewellery trade, retail, wholesale and design, and self-taught practices. I wanted to start my own business to explore my own ideas and challenge myself through being my own boss and being successful! Where do you sell your work? In a number of galleries and jewellers in the UK and online via my own website, Etsy and Folksy online shops. What is the most distinctive aspect about your work? I’d like to think my attention to detail – I am a perfectionist and so ensure each piece is finished to a high standard How do you balance your everyday life with your business life? Well I also have a full time job which I currently do alongside my own work, so the balance is between the two of those! What has been the most beautiful piece of jewellery you have made to date? That’s a really hard question to answer…each piece is beautiful to the individual who wears it, so I couldn’t possible say it is any one piece.

Jewellery Diva Victoria is a jewellery maker and designer based in Broome, near Bungay. I’m currently working on lots of orders to get out in time for Christmas! It’s a very busy time of year so I don’t get much time to do any experimental work. But, once the festive season has calmed down I am looking forward to working on some new designs, which will include techniques such as etching and enamelling which I’ve been meaning to do for months now! Where were you born and raised? I was born in Kingston Blount in Oxfordshire, and then my parents moved to a little village near Calne in Wiltshire a few years afterwards. I spent a large part of my life there until I moved to Buckinghamshire when I was 19 to go to University in High Wycombe. Where do you live now? I currently live in a small village on the Norfolk Suffolk border close to the market town of Bungay. 8

What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome? I was commissioned to make 6 sets of silver charms by the artist Robert Pacitti who won the Arts Council “Artists Taking the Lead” project for East Anglia….each set contained 205 individual designs which I was given as 2D symbols and had to work out how to make these 3D silver charms. The whole process took me just over a year to complete and the charms were used in events across the region. One set now resides at Abbots Hall, part of the East Anglian Museum of Rural Life in Stowmarket. What is your favourite technique? What excites you about it? Gemstones intrigue me, from their creation to the depths of colour and reflections they produce – to combine these in wearable adornment I always find exciting! Do you keep a journal of ideas and how do you keep yourself focused and organized? I have files on the computer of inspirational images and photographs that I have taken – the beauty of camera phones! To keep focused I have a huge white board in my workshop and everything I should be making gets written up on there…to stop me wandering off track…which I can easily do. I have a whole box of experimental pieces named “One Day!” that I use to draw inspiration from when starting new designs. What era of jewellery design do you like the most? Art Deco – 1920’s style. What keeps you motivated? The desire to succeed in my dreams.

From an early age, Brisbane fashion designer Chiquita Searle knew style and clothes were the only things that made her tick. From cheeky beginnings at university spending her textbook money on clothes, to an unfulfilled corporate life in the mining industry, her inherent desire to involve herself in the fashion world was one she couldn’t ignore. Having studied at the Paris Fashion Institute in 2011, Searle has returned to her first love in the form of her very own European inspired corporate wear label, “Chi”. Merging her corporate roots with timeless chic, Searle’s innovative collections reflect the sense of style and confidence she exhibits herself. Searle is fast becoming the leader in innovative corporate wear for the female executive and entrepreneur in Australia, designing for the woman who covets exclusive, premium products enjoyed by only a few. Who was the person who encouraged you to pursue your career in fashion? Me funnily enough. I always knew I would establish my own fashion label at some stage and about 2 years ago I reassessed where I was personally and professionally and it seemed like a good time to put the wheels into motion. What led you to develop your business specialising in corporate clothing? After studying at the Paris Fashion Institute last year, I realised that there is a market the world over for stylish on trend corporate wear that doesn’t have to incorporate the traditional suit. Our options have been rather limited and Chi fills that gap by providing stylish corporate ensembles which are both edgy and feminine. Would you please share with us some information about the services you offer your clients? I am a Designer but I also incorporate Styling Sessions for my clients as after speaking with many of them, I’ve found the overwhelming result to be that corporate women are frustrated with their lack of understanding in how to style an outfit, what to wear to flatter their body shape and in some cases not even knowing what body shape they are! In my opinion, there is no point to beautiful clothes without fully understanding how to wear them. So part of my mission has become to educate my clients on how to look fabulous for the office everyday without fail! How do you market your business? I have an amazing Publicist, Samantha Brooks of Bloom PR & Marketing, who is tireless in her endeavours to raise the profile of myself and my label. I also utilise social media and have an intern dedicated to it. But most importantly, I go to great lengths to ensure that my clients have an AMAZING experience where they are made to feel special every time they deal with my label so most of my business has been word of mouth as a result. INTERVIEW CONTINUES December 2012

What has been your greatest challenge to date and how did you resolve it? Managing the cashflow. I get so excited about the design aspect and once a new design forms in my head I just want to get it made NOW! But in business you have to pace yourself and focus on selling the current collection before focusing on the next design element. Who is your favourite designer and why? Alexander McQueen. I think he was, without question, the most talented designer to have ever walked the face of the earth. His creativity is unrivalled. It’s pure art. I think he was an absolute genius. What are your fashion forecasts for the next season? To be honest, I don’t follow trends as such. I believe that corporate pieces need to be timeless and classic so that when purchasing something for your work wardrobe it’s a garment you can wear for seasons, plural rather than singular. Corporate clothing in my mind is an investment and for that reason I don’t follow trends when designing but instead think about my “Chi” Woman who leads a full and active life and needs items that can fit into her lifestyle. When I design it’s ALL about my customer, never about trends. Would you please tell us about your role in the League of Extraordinary Women? What the League aims to do is bring together like minded female entrepreneurs to celebrate our achievements and provide a community where we can share ideas, align businesses and generally just motivate and support each other on our journey to greatness! I have been fortunate enough to be named the first ever Queensland Crusader which is an achievement I am very proud of. I organise the Qld Events, promote them, assist in building the memberships, organise speakers and am someone any young female professional can come to for direction or support. What are your future plans? To build on the success of my styling sessions and open my first “Destination” store in 2013 in Brisbane where I can continue to hold the Chi Corporate Styling Sessions, launch Exclusive Invitation Only VIP Nights and have it be a place for Chi customers to visit to be pampered and “styled” rather than simply another retail store. How do you chill out when you need some ‘Me Time’? I read or I watch a DVD. I’ve recently taken up running which I really enjoy so aim to do that 3 times per week as well. What is your favourite article of clothing? The ‘Office Wench Halterneck’, It’s my latest design and I love it. It’s perfect for the Christmas season as it can be worn to the office under a blazer and then worn by itself to any number of Christmas events with a tailored pant or skirt. If you could choose any holiday destination in the world, where would you choose? New York. On the agenda is to spend Xmas in 2013 there for my first White Xmas with my family.

CREATIVE DIVA Lesley Messam Interview

Lesley is a Master Registry Level IV, Senior Art Clay Instructor, PMC Certified. She is based in Chichester England. Lesley was born and raised in Chichester where she still lives today. Lesley loves this beautiful city as it is steeped in so much history. Lesley has a shop right in the centre of the town where she runs the Bead Cellar which is the newest addition to her very popular business named ‘David Messam’. Joan has known Lesley for several years. Lesley was a regular contributor to Joan’s previous magazine title, Making Jewellery and also to Joan’s recently published book ‘Creative Lampwork’. We are delighted to invite Lesley to share some of her stunning work and a little about her creative lifestyle with our MCD readers. Please share with us what lead you to create your own business. I started making jewellery about 15 or 16 years ago when a friend walked into our shop and said, “Look what I have made”. Right from that moment I knew I wanted to make jewellery. Initially I attended evening classes until I finally took a 5 year college course. During this period I discovered metal clay, glass fusing and lampworking amongst other materials. I considered myself to be in jewellery heaven. How do you market your work? I market my work in lots of ways. Half of our front shop window is used to display my work. I have a blog Silverwithlesley.blogspot.com, a website Silverwithlesley.com as well as Twitter and a Facebook page. I have written tutorials for several magazines, I’ve been published in three books and appeared on a metal clay calendar. What is the most distinctive aspect that you enjoy about your work? I am one of those people who get bored quite quickly, so I like to combine my work with many other materials such as glass, lampwork and ceramic. INTERVIEW CONTINUES ON PAGES 16 AND 17

LESLEY MESSAM INTERVIEW When did you discover lampwork and how do you combine glass with silver? I discovered lampwork about 5 or 6 years ago, I took a class with Beverley Hicklin it was a one to one. I learnt loads. I like to use my beads in my work to add a different dimension to the pieces. What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome? Writing! Writing tutorials, writing a blog, networking on Face-book in fact all the things I do to promote myself. I am dyslexic so I really struggle. It’s a real fear of appearing to be stupid but having said that, it would never stop me from trying. What is your favourite technique? What excites you about it? I like to build with metal clay, construction is really exciting to me, I think it’s why I love making beads because they have dimension. Do you work with any of the new copper, Sterling or bronze clays? OMG! I love copper clay and again combining it with silver. It is just fantastic.The colours are gorgeous together. I have also been working with Sterling silver clay which again I love as you have all the positives of Sterling silver but in clay form. It is metal clay heaven to my mind. Have you travelled abroad to teach or to attend PMC gatherings? I have been to many PMC and AC gatherings. What can be better then spending time with like-minded people from around the world? When it’s time to recharge the batteries, where do you go? In the past it’s been New York but I would now say London. It has just about everything you want for a short break. A visit to the V&A just gets all the jewellery making juices going. It’s such an inspirational place and it’s right on our door step!

I regularly write for Making Jewellery, Beads and Beyond, Creative Beads and several more jewellery and creativity magazines What is the most distinctive aspect that you enjoy about your work? My work is so diverse! I am really lucky! From creating bespoke jewellery pieces, to designing new kits for retail to actually demonstrating on the television, I love it all! Now that you are working with Do Craft, how do you balance your everyday family life with your business life? It’s important to have a plan! Not that it is always possible to stick to the plans especially with television scheduling but I work around my children being at school as much as I possibly can, so I get the best of both worlds! Regardless of how much I adore my work my kids remain my number one priority.

Creative Diva Debbie is a jewellery maker and TV craft presenter on Ideal Worlds Create and Craft channel and ‘Jewellery Maker’ channel.

When I was growing up I wanted to be a dancer and singer! I have been lucky enough to progress from making bespoke jewellery pieces and running my own small business to writing for some of Europe’s best known craft magazines. I am also the resident jewellery designer for Docrafts and this involves designing projects and kits, staff training and demonstrating at large craft shows and loads more. I started presenting and demonstrating for Docrafts on Ideal Worlds ‘Create and Craft’ channel which is fantastic fun and a great experience and that led to me also being a guest designer on the ‘Jewellery Maker’ channel. Where were you born and raised? I was born and raised in Mill Hill in North London. Where do you live now? I have lived in West Yorkshire for about 16 years just outside Leeds. What is your background and what led you to create your own business? My background is in the performing arts so I have had my own business to one degree or another for many years. I used to run my 26

What products are the most popular that you demonstrate on TV and why? It’s very changeable to be honest. I have recently been working with the shamballa type cord and beads and they were very popular. People always like to buy new tools as well and of course storage. You can never have enough clever storage! What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome? I lost my Dad two Christmases ago after a long illness. I went to my interview with Docrafts very soon after. It was a great challenge to continue with my business, look after my family and start a new venture after such a loss. But I feel all the stronger for it and I know my Dad would be very proud of how I have coped and what I have achieved in the last two years. I still miss him every day and wish he could have seen me on television. What is your favourite technique? What excites you about it? I love working with metal and wire. The idea of making something beautiful out of something that started out as a flat piece of metal or long piece of wire really excites me! Do you keep a journal of ideas and how do you keep yourself focused and organized? I do indeed! I am always scribbling and drawing out ideas and I take loads of photographs. As far as organisation goes, everything is in my iPad! It is my best friend I couldn’t do without it. Who is your favourite designer and why? I can’t say I have an absolute favourite but am very inspired by some of my very talented friends! Sue Mason-Burns for her astounding wirework skills and the very lovely Clair Wolf for her amazing metal work! I am constantly inspired and impressed by other designers. What keeps you motivated? Without wishing to sound too pretentious, I’m motivated by the need to create things.There is no avoiding it. I love it, so motivation is never really a problem. You’re on a desert island, what three things can’t you live without? Apart from my family that would be my dogs, my tools and music of course! If I could have four le’ts not forget cake! GLASS ARTIST DIVA CORINA TETTINGER Interview changing, ever evolving. I try not to get stuck in something I am comfortable with...I don’t want my customers to look at my work for sale and think “geee, another one of THOSE...” I don’t want things to get boring, neither for me nor for my customers, so I try to come up with new things, but they will always be “semi-anal”...I have no love for what the bead world calls “organic beads” I need to be “in control” - which might be part of my German upbringing... Do you work from home or in a studio? Working from a studio outside of my home wouldn’t work for me....I mostly work at night. By that I mean I make beads. I work all day long, answering emails, updating my Face-book page, shipping things etc. The actual work is probably the smallest amount of time in my day. If I had to leave the house to go to work, I don’t think I would be very happy...Luckily my landlord doesn’t mind the idea of me working with fire in the living room..

I live a very selfish life, in a way - I’m not married, don’t have children, so, ME time is literally every minute of the day. The only place I would like to TAKE that me once in a while is a warm climate... That’s why I schedule classes in Florida, Hawaii or South Africa, like next year. Turn the temperature up over 80 and I’m a happy camper... In Joan’s interview with Corina she asked the following questions. Where were you born and raised? I was born in a small town in Germany, Solingen, but I left Germany to study abroad more or less immediately after graduating from high school...I lived in Japan, Austria and Egypt before getting married to an American citizen and moving to Washington State Where do you live now and what do you love most about your home? My first 15 years in America I lived on the very idyllic San Juan Island here in the Pacific Northwest, but after my divorce I moved to “the mainland” and now I’m renting a house with a roommate.What I love most is that I can have my studio in the living room and nobody complains about me having my “bead stuff” all over the house. Have you always worked with glass? No, I discovered glass when I lived on the island and had nothing else to do, so I went to the library and happened upon a book on bead-making. Before that I had no particular interest in glass, but I had always done crafts of different kinds, my favourite material used to be fabric and paper... How do you describe your style of work? I’m not sure that this is a proper term, but I would call my style “semi-anal”.... What is the most distinctive aspect of your work? From my perspective, the most distinctive aspect is that it is ever 28

CORINA TETTINGER INTERVIEW Please tell us about your books and what inspired you to write? I only published one “real” book - the rest are more magazine type things with compilations of other artists’ know-how. As for “Passing The Flame” - that was a dream I always had: to write a book. My imagination goes into beads rather than stories, so fiction was out of the question. I guess the fact that my dad was a printer and my grandmother a bookbinder kind of predisposed me to write a book some day. I have enough knowledge to put together another book, but it’s a lot more difficult now, because I am the type of person who has to completely focus on a task. I would have to take about 6 month to a year to work on a book - and at the moment I have to work to pay the rent, so I’m not sure how I will get that done any time soon. What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome? Not sure whether you are referring to artistic challenges or personal challenges, but for me, they are closely related. I had a very rough time around 2005-2006, I experienced a month of the most horrible depression, with intermittent periods of mania - so it was no wonder that I was diagnosed as bipolar. It’s unusual for that to appear out of nowhere in the mid-40s. I went through some incredibly difficult times before I could acknowledge there was something wrong with me. During this time I was in jail, homeless and in a mental hospital. My reputation as an artist was seriously shot, and I was sure that my life was over.Turns out, it wasn’t - I got a medication regimen that works, my friends stuck with me and my work resumed, customers returned, and looking back, I am actually glad I had all those experiences. It sounds like a cliché, but it did make me a better person. I am more compassionate to the problems of others and more confident. If I could survive THAT, I can survive anything. I don’t mind talking about being bipolar at all, I always hope that I can give others strength as well... What is your favourite technique? What excites you about it? Sometimes people call me “stringer queen” - and I love working with stringer (fine threads of glass). It makes me FEEL good when I can take a skinny little piece of stringer and place it onto a bead where I (emphasis) want it to go. It all comes back to the control thing... How many hours in a day would you devote to working in the flame? If possible I work about 4-6 hours, though I have to say that there are times where I feel my body, my shoulders start hurting a little, and my legs get tired, because I sit cross legged on my chair. I actually bought a hot tub to relax my body after several hours hunched over the torch... If you could share the torch with anyone in the world, who would it be? I would give a torch to EVERYONE in the world....to me it’s just the most exciting thing to do, watching glass melt....major therapy.

TURN A HOBBY INTO A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS – LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

In this issue Nicky talks about the formalities of running a small business from home in the UK. We will look at book keeping, tax requirements and registering a small business in more detail. It is vitally important to understand all legal requirements before starting up your business, this way you can avoid unnecessary obstacles in the future! Registering as Self Employed I have found that one of the biggest misunderstandings amongst crafters is that there is no need to register for tax.This isn’t the case! The moment that any money changes hands, whether you’re making a profit, or only covering your costs, you MUST register with HMRC.This is the moment that your hobby turns into a business BUT it doesn’t necessarily mean you will have to pay tax. One of the first things on your list of things to do, and one of the main legal requirements is to register with HMRC for Self Assessment as soon as you can. In most cases when starting a craft business you should register as a sole trader.This means you will be running your business as an individual and the big plus is that you get to keep all profits after any tax has been paid. Tax Almost every person in the UK is entitled to a Personal Allowance; this is the total income you are allowed before being taxed. There are three levels of Personal Allowance: • Basic • Age 65-74 • Over 75 The Personal Allowance rates for the year 2012/13: • For persons under the age of 65 - £8,105. • If you are between the ages of 65 and 74 - £10,500 • If you’re 75 and over - £10,660. You will not pay tax if your total income is below any of these figures, if your total income is above these figures then the personal allowance will be deducted from your total and you will only be required to pay tax on the remainder. You can also visit the HMRC website www.hmrc.gov.uk or GOV.UK which replaces the Direct Gov and Business Link websites www.gov.uk these are full of useful information for small businesses. Many of the exhibits – including jewellery, textiles and sculpture – have never been on public view before, and the stories behind them chart the Museum’s changing attitudes to African cultures from the 1850s to the present day. This display of around 100 objects from the V&A’s collections looks at the V&A’s engagement with and changing view of art and design from Africa since the earliest days of the Museum in the 1850s to the present. SH WCASE YOUR WORK Introducing Robert Cripwell. Robert is a mosaic artist who uses his own hand-made en-caustic glass tiles to produce his stunning works of art.

“My Dude tile ‘man’ is now 50 years old.”

Hello, I am Robert Cripwell, I’m 62 years of age and I was born a Gemini Tiger in Nottingham England, I emigrated to Perth Australia in 1967. I made my first tile decorated with an image of a man on the face of the tile in 1963. This image is called the Dude! I still make Dude tiles so my ‘man’ is now 50 years old. I am currently working on a project in N.S.W. Blue Mountains. This project is a large kitchen splash back. I am also working on a commission to make a table for home owners who have a balcony overlooking the Swan River Perth. Other commissions that I’m working on include a circular floor inlay for a new home and a water wall employing the same concept. There are various other projects in my diary, one being fabricating 11 hoppers in a cathedral all incorporating old lead light windows, this is a Heritage job. Most of my work now is commissioned which almost always means more R and D. I enjoyed building fire places and BBQS and Pizza ovens which led me to the world of kilns and the pottery wheel. I spent many years working on the wheel. All of these creative paths finally merged and led me to what I do now which is making tiles. I make a tile, then I make a mould of it then out of that mould I can make one tile an hour. This sounds slow in terms of production time but in actual fact I have got 100 moulds which I can turn out every hour which produces about one square meter. When the tiles are dry I fire them, then glaze them and re-fire. When they have cooled down I use them. I make tiles to sell to the public so you can use them too in your mosaic projects I have made enough for us all! I still use my wheel to make my seaweed range of pots. The process of sager firing is something I never tire of. I live in my studio gallery residence so that I can respond to the kilns. At certain parts of a firing, human intervention is required. Everything I do I discovered myself. There are always things to learn and re-learn. A very diverse field of expertise is required to be a complete artist in clay ceramics and glass. Competing with cheap imports is a killer, so you have to have something unique to offer and hope other people don’t copy it. It is possible to have work produced off shore but the downside of that is that you have to source a company to produce your designs and this move requires mega bucks and can be very risky. I prefer direct marketing from my website. I also find wholesale is a killer as the cost of packaging, distribution stock piles expensive. Another downside to wholesale is that you get less than half the price of your products retail value.You also have to supply sample boards so if you are a ceramic artist thinking of going down the wholesale path, this journey is expensive but if you can afford it and you know there is a market for your wares go for it and I sincerely wish you the best! I have a few other passions one being my family. I have two daughters one is a gifted sculptor the other a budding photographer and the 36

Two questions I’ve noticed that many artists are asked in their interviews is, who is their favourite artist and where would they go if they could time travel. As for whom I would like to spend time with that would be Joe Cocker as he is a work in progress. Joe is so humble. To me he is a beautiful person and the greatest singer of all time. Without a doubt he’s a real artist. If I could go anywhere in the world right now I would go to Mexico to work with the bricklayers that build arches and domes without templates. This amazing technique is called Boveda Mexican bricklaying. To me this is true art.

JOURNALING DIVA Robin Follette Interview

Joan Gordon met Robin at a food harvest festival in Bangor Maine USA. Here Robin shares with with us information about her art and her passion for writing. Where were you born and raised? My father was in the Air Force so I was born at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine.We lived in North Carolina and Georgia before being stationed for a few years in the Philippines. We came back to Maine when Dad left the Air Force to keep the same job when Dow AFB was sold to the city of Bangor. Where do you live now and what do you love most about your home? I have a small house on 45 acres of land on a dead end road in the middle of the woods in rural Washington County. I love the privacy and peacefulness of the woods and the ability to step outside, gather materials and bring them indoors to decorate.The open floor plan gives our small home a large but cozy warmth. What led you to your current creative business? I’ve been writing since I was ten years old. I decided to turn to writing full time when our youngest daughter was preparing to go off to college, leaving us with an empty nest. What is the most distinctive aspect of your work that you enjoy? I live an outdoors lifestyle and am able to incorporate everything I love in my lifestyle into words. Have you attended many classes or workshops? If so who was the most inspiring? Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance holds the Blackfly Writers Retreat in the spring. Meeting writers face to face and learning from and about them is very inspiring. 40

Who is your favourite artist? Rosamunde Pilcher weaves wonderful stories. I wasn’t a poetry fan until I met Elizabeth Garber. What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your work? I lack a formal writing education. I dropped out of college because of family obligations so I don’t have a degree. The ability to write isn’t always as important as a degree. Have you dabbled in other mediums? I love to bring natural materials from the outdoors inside to decorate. Small birch trees, minus their leaves, are a favourite. I tuck white lights into the branches. As I find things such as cones and butterflies I tuck them into the tree or on wreaths. Do you keep a journal of ideas and how do you keep yourself focused and organised? My nature journal is filled with scribbles, sketches and detailed notes of things I’ve seen, ideas of things to write or crafts to make. A list of natural items I need to collect for crafting or to write about is kept on a loose piece of paper tucked inside. I’m a list maker. I start with a daily to-do list for the household and one for work. I scratch things off as I go, adding to the bottom as I think of more. A 3” x 5” spiral notepad and small pen fit in my pocket. Without it, I wouldn’t remember all I need to accomplish in a day. Writing it down keeps my mind clear to concentrate on what I’m doing rather than try to remember what I need to do. Are you exhibiting in any galleries or shows now or in the future? I’m not. I think it’s going to be a quiet winter of nature crafting and writing. I did recently read two outdoors stories I wrote on Writers Forum, a program on WERU radio. The show is archived at http://archives.weru.org/writers-forum/writersforum-101112. Where do you go when you need serious ‘Me Time’? Once a year I retreat to a cabin several miles into the woods. It sits on the side of a stream. There is no cell phone reception, no television and radio comes in sporadically. I’m able to sketch and write and relax and remind myself of why I do what I do. 1 BEFORE Rebecca Feldman is not only the amazing graphic designer who helps to put our fantastic magazine together, she also has a more ‘serious’ job – as a nanny! Consequently she doesn’t have much time ‘ME TIME’. After a recent bout of the flu, Bec was feeling very much run down. Her friends here a MCD thought that she deserved a little spoiling and surprised her with the opportunity to take a day off to spend at New<ID’s studios in London where she was totally pampered and given one of their professional makeovers. On her special day I travelled up to London from Wales to lend her some moral support as she doesn’t normally like people to make a fuss over her and she was feeling rather nervous. When it came to writing about her experience, Bec emiled me saying; “I really enjoyed it surprisingly. I was very uncertain about the whole process before I arrived but as soon as the girls started working on my hair I felt totally relaxed, same goes for the make-up. I thought I would absolutely hate posing for the camera but Diego Bonfanti my photographer, made me feel at ease and I really had fun. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. It was great having you there too Kira, because you had already experienced it. Having you there was very reassuring. I just relaxed and enjoyed the whole process”! Read about Rebecca’s day of pampering below... First step was the restyling of Bec’s hair; Bec’s hair is very long. She hadn’t been to the hairdressers for a while and as she didn’t want to lose too much length Nalan, her hair stylist, suggested that she had an intensive conditioning treatment that would create shine, as well as having subtle layers cut into the front of her hair.The effect was dramatic, especially after Nalan used heated straighteners to gently curl the lower strands of hair. Bec’s hair looked glossy and healthy while subtly glamorous. And then the make-up; Next it was on to the make-up. Bec commented that she liked Adele’s look. Make-up artist Yasmine suggested that she would replicate the bold eyeliner and pale shadow of that style.The liquid liner was especially successful – applied so deftly and quickly as to make it look the simplest thing in the world to do. It had an immediate and dramatic effect; bringing out Bec’s blue irises. The next part of the transformation was the brow pencil – a light application really helped to frame her face and make her eyes stand out. To balance the strong eye makeup, her lips were kept simple, with a medium-tone lipstick and liner. Finally blusher was applied to highlight and enhance the contours of her cheeks. At every step throughout the process Yasmine explained what she was doing so that Bec could pick up plenty of tips and the huge mirror placed in front of her allowed Bec to see everything that was being done. Lights, camera – action! Then it was on to the photo-shoot. Although nervous at first, the photographer helped to make Bec feel more comfortable and she soon quickly warmed into the process. After wearing 3 changes of outfit and numerous backdrops Bec ended up with this beautiful photograph as a memento of the day and the memory of having being treated like a celebrity for a day. 45

MERCER MAINE USA The State of Maine in America offers the visitor stunning scenery, villages and towns that offer unique shopping experiences plus a wide variety of quality cafes, restaurants, attractions and activities. Each season in this state is strikingly different and the folk who live in this beautiful part of the world are warm, friendly and generous with their hospitality. My favourite place to visit in Maine is the rural district of Mercer which is nestled between Norridgewock and New Sharon. Mercer is where my sister Mary lives with her husband Bob and their dog Nell on their farm which overlooks the ski fields of Skowhegan. When I visited them this past November, it snowed. The photo you see here was taken from their dining room overlooking the back balcony. Two nights after the snowfall, I stood out on this balcony watching the northern lights illuminate the night sky. It was an amazing experience! 47

DIVINE TRAVEL TRAVEL The countryside in Mercer is really something to see and experience. I especially enjoy walking in the woods just after the snow has fallen. It’s a winter wonderland. Striking visual images like the fir trees, dark green foliage in stark contrast against the pure white of the snow heighten one’s senses. Whilst I haven’t seen any black bears when walking in the woods, I have seen wild turkeys, deer and once a coyote. Nearby Blue Ribbon Farm there are several lakes bordered with holiday cabins. In summer these areas are busy with holiday makers and tourists, enjoying water sports and fishing. In winter the lakes are a quiet and peaceful place to visit. Keen fishermen drive out on to the frozen lakes in snow mobiles where they huddle against a wood burner within little portable wooden huts that look like outhouses. Inside the hut they fish from a hole that’s been cut into the ice. Winter brings with it the opportunity to go ice skating, snow shoe hiking, cross country and downhill skiing. For the less adventurous it offers the opportunity to enjoy some quality time indoors, reading, writing, painting, baking or exploring a new craft. Mercer is rich with artistic and talented people. It is also famous for its food production and farming. Mercer is the cornucopia of Maine. On this visit I enjoyed learning how to make fresh pasta in my sister and brother in-law’s commercial kitchen with their ‘right hand man’ Conrad. In fact we made 261pounds of fresh pasta to sell at the Bangor Food Festival. The pasta making was an interesting and fun experience. Not having any knowledge about pasta manufactures in general, I was left wondering if all pasta makers sing Italian opera whilst producing their goods. If you’re looking for a holiday with a difference, visit this haven called Mercer. Rent a lakeside holiday cabin and enjoy Mother Nature at her best. The new army chic

n its various incarnations, for the past decade or so it seems that Military has been the eternal Autumn/Winter trend, both on the catwalks and on the street. Luckily for devotees who love the functionality of military style, but still want their look to have a new-season edge, it has now finally been given a new spin: for AW12, it’s all about the khaki army surplus vibe and adding a hard, masculine edge with leather details and caps. The New Army Chic also ties in with the embellishment trend: army-style accessories with jeweled embellishments are perfect for softening the look. For wearability, looking for ways to tone down the full-on army vibe is key: heavy lace-up boots, a khaki army surplus-style jacket and a cap are all great pieces on their own, but never all at once. The aim is to look slightly tough, very chic and oh-so AW12, not to channel a Soviet-era sergeant major (or a certain ex-WAG popstar…). DIVINE FLORISTRY This month in our Reader’s Gallery, Robin Follette, our Diva from Maine USA shares with us her scented Christmas Wreath. You can incorporate your personal style into your Christmas wreath by making it yourself. Traditionally, balsam fir is used in wreath making. You may choose to add cedar, pine, red twig dogwood and other plant materials to personalize your wreath. Decorate with pine cones, reindeer moss and nuts or Christmas bulbs and ornaments. Perhaps a simple red bow to add holiday color is all you want on your wreath. By Robin Follette.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS

Balsam tips; cedar, pine and other plant materials may also be used Wreath ring, 10” or 12” 20 gauge wire Wire cutters or clippers Decorations of your choice. A red bow is traditional. The tips of balsam trees snap easily when cold. You can start your wreath making project by picking your tips or by making a trip to a local seller.You’ll need five to six pounds of tips to make a full, hardy wreath. Choose green, shiny balsam to be sure your wreath lasts through the Christmas holiday.

DESIGNER TIPS • If the wire breaks, remove the group you’re working on, wrap the wire around the ring, and start again. • Attach decorations with small pieces of wire that can be hidden from sight. • Gently shake the finished wreath outdoors before hanging indoors to remove loose sprills. My closest friends come to my homestead in the woods to gather tips, make wreaths, enjoy a pot luck lunch complete with wine, and listen to Christmas carols together. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season before we’re so busy with festivities to get together casually. We look forward to our crafting day together each year. Each glance at our beautiful wreaths hanging on our doors is a reminder of our day together and the fun we had tipping, wrapping, talking, laughing and eating.

ONE

Attach the wire to the ring by wrapping the wire around the ring.

TWO

Choose five or six balsam tips to group together, one on top of another. Fan the tips slightly so that each point is separate.

THREE

Place the group of tips under the ring, lining the ring up with the center stem, and wrap wire tightly three times around the group.Add additional greens to groups as desired.

FOUR

Repeat step three, this time placing the group on top of the ring. Stagger each group of tips three to four inches lower than the last group. Alternate above and below the ring.

FIVE

Continue to add groups of tips until the wreath is full. You’ll have to move greens out of the way as you get close to the end.

SIX

uck the last group in, wrap tightly with wire. Cut the wire, leaving three inches of extra wire.Wrap the extra wire around a piece of balsam on the back of the wreath and tuck the end in to hide it from sight.

KUMIHIMO & LAMPWORK BEAD JEWELLERY By Nicky Townsend Nicky is now learning the art of lampworking which involves melting glass using a gas and oxygen fuelled torch. Here she shows us what she can do with one of her beautiful, large flower focal beads. You can create this wonderful piece of jewellery using the ancient Japanese art of Kumihimo. It can be worn as a statement necklace and it also looks great as a chunky multi wrap bracelet. My design has been made using a 12 warp Kumihimo braid which is relatively simple once you get into a rhythm, you could use an 8 warp braid if preferred.The design includes my handmade glass flower bead which has been used as a toggle clasp. The measurements given in this project will create a finished length of approximately 21 inches. The lampwork flower can be made to order by contacting Nicky. Her contact details are listed below. HOW TO MAKE IT STEP 1 PART 1 Firstly you will need to cut 12 pieces of nylon cord. Cut 8 lengths in the main colour at 100cm and 4 lengths in a contrasting colour at 120cm. The contrasting colour will create a spiral that weaves around the braid. I prefer to use rattail or braided macramé cord but you can use cotton or any other kind of beading cord that you may prefer. STEP 1 PART 2 Gather all 12 lengths of cord together and tie them to a weight. I made my weight using a large swivel clip attached to a Swiss army knife. Use anything you have to hand that’s quite heavy that you can tie your cord to. Leave around 8 to 10cm of loose cord at the end. Pass the longer ends up through the centre hole in the kumihimo disc so the knot sits level with the hole and then slot each cord into the disc as shown in photo 1.Wind the loose strands onto the bobbins. STEP 2 The starting position of the kumihimo disc is with the number 32 at the top (12 o’clock/North) Photo 2 has each strand labelled to make the directions simpler for you to follow. When it comes to rotating the disc, always rotate anti-clockwise. Follow the directions in the table until your braid is around 50cm in length. STEP 3 Once the braid is at around 50cm in length take the 4 contrasting strands from their slots and tie them into a knot in the centre, use a simple overhand knot. You will now continue in an 8 warp braid and this will conceal the knot you just created inside the braid. Leave the loose ends intact we will finish these off later on.When complete this section of the braid will create the loop part of the clasp closure. STEP 4 Adjust the positions of the 8 main colour strands, place each strand one either side of each of the black dots on the disc. Continue with an 8 warp braid - bottom left to top left, top right to bottom right, 67

rotate and repeat - until the whole braid is around 80cm in total length. Remove the strands from their slots, gather together and remove the disc. STEP 5 Create a loose loop with the 8 warp braid and tie the loose ends around the braid with an overhand knot.Tie small knots in the loose ends at varying distances from the large knot to create tendrils, cut off the remaining loose cord and melt the ends to finish. Cut off the contrasting colour strands close to the braid and gently melt the ends into the finished braid using a cigarette lighter - This will only work on nylon, if you decided to use cotton cord you will need to knot the ends and cut at the end of step 3 and weave them inside the braid to conceal. STEP 6 Remove the weight from the end and tie a tight overhand knot with the loose ends at the start of the braid. Thread on the flower and make another overhand knot to trap the flower between the large knots. To give the impression of stamen I tied small knots in each loose end close to the large central knot and then cut and melted the ends to finish. METHOD OF WORK STEP 1

Cut out blossom (flower) shapes from the organza fabric using the Dremel Versatip with the soldering tip attachment. If using thicker fabrics, use the Versatip cutting knife attachment.

Use the Dremel Glue Gun 930 to glue the strung brown sequins onto the cushion cover to form the branches planning the design carefully first if you want it to run across a number of cushions. STEP 4

Cut out leaf shapes from green fabric and use the Dremel Glue Gun 930 to glue the leaves and blossom in place as shown. (Alternatively, you could create leaves using lime green sequins). Add some sparkle to your cushions by using the Dremel Versatip to apply the hot fix gems to suggest blossom buds or more blossoms, if you prefer.

SHORT CAPE

Here is a great solution to the dilemma of what to wear on top of your party finery! By Maggie Jones. I made this short cape as an alternative to wearing a wrap or a traditional coat. I used a heavyweight raised fabric, which is plain on one side and patterned on the other. As the garment is unlined, it looks as good inside as out. An added advantage is that it is simple to sew with no darts or sleeves.This Simplicity pattern is from the ‘Project Runway’ range which allows you to personalise your garment.

MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT • • • • • • • • • •

1x Simplicity paper pattern 1942. Please refer to the pattern envelop for fabric quantities and notions.. Scissors Measuring tape Dressmaker’s pins Hand sewing needle Matching sewing thread Iron and board Tailors chalk Overlocker (optional) Bias binding (optional)

MAKING THE GARMENT

Simply follow the instructions which come with the pattern.The fabric I used was bulky so I chose not to add the pockets, straps and loops. I also used sew in rather than fusible interfacing, but otherwise the pattern instructions were followed exactly. I used an overlocker to neaten the seams.

MAGGIE’S HINTS

• Use the supplied croquis sheet in the pattern envelope to sketch out ideas for your garment.

• If you don’t have an overlocker, use bias binding to give the seam a professional finish (pic 1). • ‘Understitch’ the seam allowances and facings to ensure they lie flat (pic 2). • Remember to clip curves so that facing lie flat (pic 3). • Mark dark fabrics with dressmaker’s chalk so that you can easily see where hems need to be stitched.The chalk will brush off the fabric leaving no marks (pic 4). • With a bulky fabric it is essential to cut and layer the seam allowances to reduce bulk (pic 4). • Press your work as you go along. SUPER FAST SUPPERS For a nutritious and simple to make supper why not whip up some tasty fritters? This basic recipe is one that I make on a regular basis to use up veggies and left-over food in the fridge that has almost reached its use by date. By Joan Gordon.

Salmon & Bacon Fritters BATTER INGREDIENTS – MAKES 6 • • • • • • • •

1 x free rang egg 1 tabs of sundried tomato pesto ½ cup of Alpro or milk Handful of chopped spinach 1 x cup of plain flour 7cm length of leek finely chopped 1 tabs of grain mustard Tablespoon finely chopped basil

METHOD OF WORK

*Pre-heat the oven to 120C to keep the fritters warm before serving. STEP 1 Crack the egg into a clean bowl and whisk it with the Alpro or milk till frothy. STEP 2 Add the flour, mustard and pesto to the egg mix and continue to stir until it forms into a soft batter. Now blend in the spinach and leek. STEP 3 For salmon and bacon fritters add a 105g tin of wild pacific red salmon and one chopped rash of bacon. Mix these ingredients thoroughly into the batter. STEP 4 Heat a non-stick pan on the hob. Brush the pan with a fine film of grape-seed oil to give the fritter a crispy crust. Drop two or three dollops of batter into the pan. Flatten each with a Teflon spatula until they are about 2cm thick. Turn the heat of the bob down so the fritters cook right through. After five minutes flip the fritter over to crisp up the other side. STEP 5 Remove the fritters from the pan. Place them in a pre-heated oven to keep them warm. Cook the remaining fritters. STEP 6 Serve with a dollop of mayonnaise and a few basil leaves to garnish. Add a splash of Teriyaki sauce if desired.

JOAN’S TIPS • •

Vegetarians may wish to add feta cheese, mushroom and corn as an alternative to the salmon and bacon. For a more substantial meal, serve this with a poached egg, salad or side serve of steamed vegetables.

INGREDIENTS 2 eggs 2 cups fresh multi-grain breadcrumbs 1 lemon, rind finely grated 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese Lemon pepper 1/3 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped 1/3 cup plain flour 800g chicken tenderloins, tendons removed, trimmed Canola oil, for shallow-frying

METHOD STEP ONE Preheat an oven to 130Â°C. Combine flour, salt and pepper on a large plate. Lightly whisk eggs in a shallow dish. STEP TWO Combine breadcrumbs, lemon rind, parmesan, parsley and salt and pepper in a separate shallow dish. Add lemon pepper for added zest. STEP THREE Lightly coat chicken in seasoned flour, shaking off excess, then dip in egg, then breadcrumb mixture, pressing crumbs on gently with your fingertips to coat. STEP FOUR Add oil to a large frying pan so it is 1cm deep. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until sizzling. Cook the chicken, in batches, for 2 minutes each side or until itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just cooked through. Transfer to a baking tray and keep warm in the oven. STEP FIVE Serve chicken on absorbent paper in a fancy dish with dipping sauces, salad or celery sticks on the side.

PASSION-FRUIT PAVLOVA Ingredients – serves 8 people 4 egg whites 250g caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon white vinegar 2 teaspoons corn flour 475ml whipping cream, whipped Baking tray and baking paper Preparation: 30 mins Cooking time: 1 hour

METHOD STEP ONE Pre-heat your oven to 150 C / Gas mark 2. Grease and then line a baking tray with baking parchment. Draw a circle of approximately 23cm (9 in) on to the parchment. STEP TWO Separate the egg whites from the yolks. Store the yolks in the fridge to use later in a savoury quiche or egg custard. Place the egg whites into a large bowl. Beat them until they become stiff and fluffy but not dry. Gradually add in the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition. Continue to beat the mixture until it’s thick and glossy. Gently fold in vanilla extract, vinegar and corn flour. STEP THREE Using a clean dry spoon, place the mixture inside the circle drawn on to the parchment. Work from the centre of the circle as you spread the mixture towards the outside edge. Create raised mounds around the outside edge so there is a slight dip in the centre of the circle. STEP FOUR Place the pavlova onto a middle rack in the centre of the oven. Bake for 1 hour. Turn off the oven but leave the oven door closed to allow the pavlova to cool down. Once cool remove it from the oven and carefully slide the pavlova on to a wire rack to be sure it is completely cool. STEP FIVE Remove the parchment, and place the cooked pavlova onto a flat serving plate. Fill the centre of the meringue with whipped cream, sweetened with sugar and a few drops of vanilla essence. Drizzle over the cream, add fresh or tinned passion fruit and pureed raspberries. Serve immediately. DESIGNER TIPS • Overbeaten egg whites lose volume and deflate when folded into other ingredients so be absolutely sure that not a particle of grease or egg yolk gets into the whites. • Make ahead and store the un-decorated pavlova in an air tight container for up to 3 days.

INGREDIENTS 1 x Icy cold bottle of champagne or quality sparkling wine Sugar cubes Brandy Sliced strawberries to garnish MIX IT UP Chill the champagne flutes before using filling them. Place a sugar cube into a cold champagne glass. Pour a measure of brandy over the sugar and leave for five minutes. Slowly fill the glass with champagne. Allow the bubbles to settle and top up the glass. Serve with a slice of strawberry on the glass rim.

INDGREDIENTS Fresh mint leaves Castor sugar Lime juice White rum Cointreau Sparkling wine Fresh mint sprigs and fine slices of lime to garnish

INGREDIENTS 1 x bottle of quality lemonade 1 x bottle of dry ginger ale 1litre of red grape juice 1litre orange juice Springs of mint and small slices of fresh orange Castor sugar MIX IT UP Pour all of the ingredients into a fancy bowel and stir. Add torn shreds of mint and fine slices of orange. Lightly dampen the rim of several glasses. Dip the rims into fine castor sugar, fill the glasses with punch and serve immediately.

MIX IT UP (To make 2 cocktails) Into a cocktail shaker place 8 mint leaves, 2 tabs spoon castor sugar plus a dash of lime juice. Use a pestle or wooden mudler to crush the mint and to mix the sugar and lime together. Add 70mil of rum, 2 table spoons of Cointreau and 1 small cup of ice. Shake the cocktail shaker vigorously. Strain it into a glass and top up with sparkling wine. Serve with a twist of lime and a spring of mint.
