JOAN GORDON EDITOR IN CHIEF Hello and welcome to issue 8. As a jewellery designer I find much of my inspiration is drawn from patterns, textures and images that I observe in nature. Whilst one of my passions is to travel, over the past six months I have been exploring the area in which I live in the UK. In fact, if you turn to page 28 you’ll see images of my local village, our favourite pub and some photos taken on one of my walks that meanders around Llantrisant. This is my favourite time of year with clear bright days and with Mother Nature at her best. This change of season has me wanting to get out into the fresh air exploring the countryside. Not only has the new season given the MCD team a burst of renewed energy. We are excited to announce that our friends at Dremel have committed to support us for the next 12 months! Sandra Young was born in Fareham, Hampshire. She grew up in Lymington on the south coast where she developed her love of the New Forest and the sea. She studied at Priestlands School and then Brokenhurst College and onto Southampton Art College. In 1984 she began work for Lymington Glass Mystiques gaining basic borosilicate lampworking skills. When that company closed in 1986 Sandra started work with Mandy Flynn as New Forest Glass Sculptures. Mandy moved away in 1992 and that is when Sandra Young Glass Sculpture began. Original Doll Artist, Chris Boston, has been sculpting her one-of-a-kind creations for more than twenty-five years and is now recognised as one of Australia’s most highly regarded artists in her chosen field, winning numerous awards along the way. Each doll she creates is genuinely unique and a product of her own imagination with the head, hands and feet all hand-sculpted from Australianmade polymer clay and the clothes where possible, made from recyclable doilies, dresses and fabrics. The glasswork artist Anita Schwegler-Juen started her artistic career with soft glass in 2003. She has developed a deep and lasting relationship with this medium. Since her first introduction to lampwork she has exclusively fabricated lampworking with glass from European, Chinese and American producers. In 2006 she founded, together with her husband Elias, the studio “Atelier im Wöschhuus/Unikal Glasdesign” in Pfäffikon, near Zürich. THEY GOT THROWN OUT IN THE WASH...THIS WAS GIVEN A 5 STAR RATING BY THE WESTERN MAIL AND PRINCESS ANN ACTUALLY LAUGHED AT THE BABY ON THE LINE. THERE WAS NO CAT ON THE LINE AT THE FIRST SHOWING IN CARDIFF.. THE PROBLEM I HAD WAS HOOKING THE GLASS INTO THE DOLLY PEGS ON THE WIRE LINE. THIS WAS A BIG PROBLEM WHICH TOOK A LOT OF THINKING OUT!.
DIVINE ARTIST EUGENE NOWAKOWSKI Eugene is a professional artist based in Wales. He works in a variety of media including stained glass and oils. Here he shares his passion for art, music and poetry. Have you always lived in Wales? Yes, but did my time back in the 70’s sleeping rough on the streets of London in the hay day of ‘hippydome’ around Eros in Piccadilly ...fantastic times the 70’s. Lived in Anglesey and West Wales…. Did you study art and design at University? I studied stained glass at the famous Swansea college of Architectural Stained Glass and Design. What hurdles did you have to overcome during the development of your creative career? Finding my style but I discovered a long time ago that it’s best to just do it the way I / you like. I was drawn to every style and colour so it was a case of understanding colours and how they work for me. Students are forever asking me what colour goes with this green or red or blue etc best and now I say the only colour is the one you like best because what I choose you won’t like! In your workshops and classes what skills and techniques do your students learn to master? To design and make all styles of stained glass including glass painting with trace and silver stain paints for kiln firing; also fusing and slumping glass again in the kiln. It tends to be 90 % lead work panels or foil work but we are doing some appliqué and 3D design at the moment. The skills and techniques used will depend on the student’s experience and ability. 9

What has been your most challenging commission to date? Well the one that stands out for problem solving and challenge is ‘The Glass Washing Line’ created for the Royal Horticultural Show in Cardiff and Birmingham. Where do you find inspiration for your work? All around, but mainly by looking at nature and humanity at work. How has your love of music influenced your life? Music has always been my raison d’être again I’m draw to all styles of music but mainly I’m more inclined to the freeform jazz and now this new wave of Drone music is all embracing for me when I’m playing and singing it. I can use my wild poetic ideas to create something new, I don’t mind if it’s good or bad with any of my art but it must be original..me! What instrument do you play? I play slide guitar mainly and I’m experimenting with sound right now, I hit a strange note last year and I’ve become enamoured by it. Something very strange happened in rehearsal with Warrior Pope the Drone band in Bristol last year. When I was playing I tried a different technique and created a strange sound field that I can only describe as the God note. I thought it was a fluke at first but I’ve been able to do it again! So full steam ahead on that front, I’m hoping I can produce it live some day. How would you describe your poetry style and would you share an extract with us? Again it’s me the butterfly drawn to ideas,colours and things. I write all my own songs, music, guitar and I sing them . My new song/poem is “nothing but in ideas”. The extract reads; Space expanding, right ahead. Time is closing, right behind. We keep running, running blind. We keep running, on borrowed time.... If money wasn’t an issue where would you go and to experience what? Mexico and South America to take some mescal in the desert, purely for inspiration. LAMPWORK DIVA SANDRA YOUNG “My greatest pleasure in life is bringing a creation into being from the ideas that crystallise in my mind during the quiet hours, just after dawn, when ‘magic is in the air’.’’

In 1984 Sandra began work for Lymington Glass Mystiques gaining basic borosilicate lampworking skills. When that company closed in 1986 Sandra started work with Mandy Flynn as New Forest Glass Sculptures. Mandy moved away in 1992 and that is when Sandra Young Glass Sculpture began. Did you have a creative childhood? I am lucky to work and live in the wilds of ancient Wiltshire, having moved here from the New Forest in 1995. Originally living near the forest and the coast I spent a great deal of my childhood outdoors- often up a tree! It was here that I developed a deep fascination with the beautiful shapes and intricacies of nature. I drew detailed pictures of nature and animals, as well as of fanciful dragons and faerie. Why did you choose glass as your sculpting medium? When making glass ships in bottles, I gained my deep fascination and insight into working with borosilicate glass.To me, creating with glass- the mix of fluidity, fragility and yet strength and solidity - appeared like capturing a moment in time. Where did the magical themes that flow through your work originate from? As a child I read a lot; Tolkein, Anne McCaffrey and others, so it was natural to express animals and nature, dragons, the mystical and magical in glass. A mermaid and a dragon were the first pieces I designed and developed when I started working for myself alongside Mandy in 1986. Dragons have been central to my work ever since. What has been one of most challenging things that you’ve had to overcome when sculpting with glass? My lampworking techniques developed naturally as I encountered - and overcame - difficulties with working progressively larger and more detailed pieces. I work the glass much longer than the recognised ‘limits’ and have found ways of ‘stretching’ those limits and continue to do so to this day.

Where do you draw inspiration from? I am inspired by nature, as well as by fellow artists and craftspeople with whom I regularly meet at exhibitions and shows where I sell some of my work. Meeting the public and watching and listening to their response to my work is also inspiring and I am fortunate to have many collectors. My sculptures have grown much larger and more detailed over the years, much more so than I would have thought possible in the early years. What changes are evolving within your current field of work? My aim is to get a larger kiln so that this no longer limits my expression. In the past few years my work has gone in the opposite direction as well, I’m making detailed miniatures and beginning to use some coloured borosilicate as well as the fired on lustres that I love.

CHRIS BOSTON A passionate ‘greenie’ with a love of the Australian Bush, Chris Boston draws inspiration from nature to create her unique, one-of-a-kind, hand-sculpted dolls.
Nestled in the tree-tops in Bellbird Park, Queensland, you will discover Chris’ quaint little workshop over-flowing with all sorts of treasures she has collected including old dance costumes, tattered laces and even pieces of fabric rescued from the side of the road. Inspired by a childhood filled with wonderful make-believe stories from her father, Chris is passionate about creating the whimsical, little characters that spring readily into her mind. With a keen sense of observation, Chris is also inspired by the places she visits and the people that she meets. Her themed exhibitions offer a wealth of exciting ideas too. Here Chris talks with our Australian correspondent Elizabeth Zernike about her current work.

Each of your dolls is a work of art. How do you manage to create such individual pieces? Each time I sit down to sculpt it is a different scenario – a different batch of clay, a difference in the weather or my mood and I always have different fabrics on hand ensuring that no two dolls are ever alike. Could you give us an overview of how you create the dolls and the materials that you use? I usually begin by sculpting the faces from polymer clay, allowing each character to develop his (or her) own personality. Once I have completed the face, I sculpt the hands and feet and then start making the wire armature for the body. The body is wrapped in wadding to give it substance before attaching the polymer clay body parts and the next step is to clothe the doll. Finally, I embellish the piece and it is always tricky knowing when to stop! What have been the experiences and training that led you to start making dolls? Way back in the early days, I took a few porcelain doll classes to learn the basics of how to assemble a doll but for the most part, I am self-taught. I tell my workshop students that you have to have that ‘tingle’. It’s the tingle that keeps you going. It gives you the desire to create and to see what eventuates when you allow yourself the time to play. You have had many exhibitions in various countries. Could you tell us about the one that was most memorable? My most memorable exhibition would have to be my first ‘solo’ exhibition which was held at Gallery D in Montville, Queensland. It was a gathering of ‘notsoblings’ (the name that I give my dolls), where they came together to discuss the negative impact that the human race was having on the under-story in their forests and their world. How do you market your products? I have a website but for the most part, it is my major exhibitions that create the most interest with my collectors. What has been your greatest challenge to date and how did you resolve it? In 2009, just two weeks before the opening of my Bejewelled Fantasea Exhibition, my husband of twelve years passed away suddenly. Sadly, there is no way to resolve the shock and grief of losing your soul-mate other than time and the love and support of your friends and family. You give yourself the “greenie” tag. How does this influence your work? I have an enormous respect for our environment and I often create a piece to make a statement and to encourage people to think about the consequences of their actions. Each of your dolls seems to have a personality and a story. Is this difficult to achieve? No, I am usually inspired by someone or something that stirs a passionate response in me. What are your future plans for your business? In a perfect world, I would no longer sell my dolls but simply 19

create from the heart and have a venue where the public could come to visit and see what my world is all about. Do you run workshops? If so, could you please share some information about these? Yes, I do hold a limited number of workshops each year. I am holding a weekend retreat in September and the rest of the workshop dates can be found on my website shortly. What is the next challenge for you personally? Ideally, my next challenge is to work out how to earn a living without having to part with any more of my beloved dolls. Do you have friends or family who support you in your creative endeavours? Yes, I have a great network of family and friends including Visual Display Artist Jule Barten who has added the ‘wow’ factor to my recent exhibitions. Hatton Garden, the Jewellery Quarter in London, is a wonderfully vibrant area and I love spending my days there, soaking in the atmosphere. The London Jewellery School has had more than 6,000 students and is the largest jewellery school in the world. I still feel as ambitious and determined as from when I first set up this school. Where do you live now and what do you love most about your home? I live in leafy Clapham, South London, with an eclectic bunch of friends. The thing I love most about my home is my adorable puppy Leon who is always around to keep me company whatever I may be working on, from creative jewellery projects to business plans. How did you come to develop your school of jewellery making in London? I started running jewellery classes from a community hall as a sideline to selling my work and absolutely loved it.They were very popular and I soon realised there was a real market out there. It wasn’t long before I was running 4-5 classes a week so I took the slightly scary leap to expand into a full time rented studio in Hatton Garden. Now we run over 50 classes a month and are the largest jewellery training centre out there. How best would you describe a typical working week and how do you cope with the varied demands made of your time? One of the best things about my job is there’s no such thing as a typical working week. My time is spent between overseeing what’s going on at the Jewellery School, attending training events, networking, having meetings and of course answering lots of emails. What is the most distinctive aspect of your work that you enjoy? The variety, I love meeting new people who are passionate about jewellery and jewellery making or anyone setting up or running their own business. I enjoy working for myself, running to my own schedule and to be able to have ideas, make decisions and make things happen. For other women who dream of running their own business what advice would you share with them? To just go for it! It’s the best decision I have ever made. Of course it has not been easy but the rewards and sense of achievement and fulfilment make it all worthwhile. Don’t let others dissuade you, lots of people tried to talk me out of starting my business and I’m so glad I didn’t listen.We are currently franchising LJS throughout the UK and already many people have got in touch about running their own jewellery school. I can’t wait to see their businesses develop and flourish the

way mine has - I feel like I’m sharing my dream. What is the current focus for your students who are attending your school? We have a real variety in our students. They range from those who come just for the love of being creative and making things as a hobby or fun activity to people who want to start or grow their own jewellery businesses.Then there are ‘fashionistas’ who want to have a unique piece they designed themselves and the students on our year-long Diploma in Creative Jewellery who want to learn with a view to working in the field or setting up their own business. What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome? I had a very difficult childhood with little parental support. There’s often an assumption made about young business people and that is that it’s only possible to be a young entrepreneur if one has parental assistance. I am demonstrating that it is possible to go it alone. It was very hard to make it without much in the way of help, a support network or stable financial backing. It can be done through self-reliance, courage and determination. What excites you most about actually making jewellery? I love making an idea in my head come to life through the making process. There is nothing more rewarding than setting your mind on a exciting new design idea or collection and seeing the process through from sourcing the perfect materials, using key techniques to make the piece work visually as well as practically and seeing the final pieces being worn by others or showing them off yourself. Do your teachers follow the current trends when setting projects for your students or are they more traditional in their approach? Every tutor has their own individual style. Some classes such as those for fashion and design produce mood boards and work around current themes in the industry. Classes such as silversmithing and enamel are more traditional in their approach to design. Our courses focus on learning techniques so that students build up a ‘tool kit’ of skills that can be applied to any design they like, giving them the versatility to be creative and innovative in what they produce. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and who would you choose to spend time with? I find Freud really fascinating. I’ve spent some time in the past year reading books on psychoanalytic theories on creativity. I’d love to travel back and ask him a question or two – and would have to convince him to come and try out a jewellery class, I think the feedback form would be particularly interesting!

It’s no secret that I love Vivienne Westwood, so it stands to reason that I love this beautiful, indulgent, giant of a book.To call it a ‘coffee table book’ doesn’t do it justice; the production values are superb, and the size means that a double page spread is over 1/2 metre across. Introduced by i-D founder Terry Jones, it incorporates extracts of interviews from various issues of i-D across the decades, offering insight into an intriguing character who, along with Malcolm McLaren, helped shape the landscape of punk, out of their tiny King’s Road boutique. Bold, political and controversial, Westwood was, and still is, a force to be reckoned with, and at 72 years old, her designs still hold the same appeal for younger generations that they did when she first burst onto the scene in the 1970s. The stunning photos in this book span her career, taking a peek at catwalks, backstage scenes, magazine spreads, and of course, the grand dame herself. Very few movements have created waves like punk did, and very few designers have made an impact like Vivienne Westwood.This is a beautiful tribute to one of the world’s best-loved fashion designers and would make a fantastic gift for any fan. Pizza is my Friday night dinner of choice – quick, easy, delicious and the perfect accompaniment to a cold beer or glass of wine. I’m stuck in a bit of a pizza rut though, because my addiction to pepperoni means I rarely branch out, which is a pity when there is such a wealth of possibility. Australian chef Pete Evans is something of a pizza guru, and this book is packed with mouthwatering photography and a wide variety of recipes, including dessert pizzas, sandwich pizzas and calzone. Best of all, he proves that pizza can actually be quite healthy if you ditch the thick American style base and mountains of poor quality cheese. All tastes are catered for, with recipes including BLT, smokey barbeque chicken, roast pork with rosemary, apple sauce and pork crackling, and even octopus! Being a huge fan of Mexican cuisine, I can’t wait to try the Huevos Rancheros, based on a traditional breakfast dish, with added avocado, sour cream and lime. It’s just begging to be washed down with a Corona! Evans has an impressive way of making even the most bizarre sounding recipes appealing – brussel sprouts and mustard seeds? Sounds a little bit wrong but looks delicious! Aside from making my stomach growl, this book has inspired me to experiment more, proving that where pizza is concerned, the only limit is your imagination.

Mixed Messages is professional artist Ann Manie’s introduction to the medium of collage. It is defined as ‘an art form in which compositions are made out of pieces of paper, cloth, photographs and other miscellaneous objects, juxtaposed and pasted on dry ground’, but for me it is simply an excuse to throw out the rule book, make a bit of a mess and express your inner child! Part one offers a brief historical outline, revealing how collage has developed into a valid artistic medium, taking you from its origins in cubism, through its subsequent developments by futurists, surrealists and pop artists. Part 2 showcases a selection of contemporary collage artists, whose wide range of styles really demonstrate the medium’s versatility. My favourite is Fereydoun Ave, who has taken advantage of technological developments such as Photoshop to produce some really visually exciting work. The final chapters hand over to you, introducing materials, techniques and projects to get you started. It’s been a long time since I’ve tried my hand at collage but this book has reminded me what a versatile and free art form it is.

I’ll admit it, I love vegetables. Meat I can take or leave, and I don’t really have a sweet tooth, but vegetables? Yes please! Unfortunately the Western diet doesn’t really encourage people to share my (slightly weird) enthusiasm, placing far too much emphasis on all things carnivorous. Matt Wilkinson hopes to change this with his beautifully illustrated book, which encourages you to build your meals around the vegetables that are in season, when they will taste their best and be most affordable. He even offers tips for growing your own vegetable garden, but if that doesn’t appeal to you I’m sure the 80 recipes will. And for the carnivores amongst you, panic not! The recipes do include meat, it’s just that the veggies are the real stars of the show. Recipes range from snacks and desserts to full meals, and include horseradish and tarragon mustard, foil roasted beets with ricotta and mint, nettle and sorrel soufflé omelette with feta, and even beetroot, celery, apple and ginger juice.There are even notes about each vegetable to help you get the best out of it, with tips for growing and cooking. If you find vegetables dull, this book is sure to change your mind, and if like me you already love them, this will offer a wealth of new ideas! 25

MY MAKEOVER
MAKEOVER SESSION WITH MAGGIE JONES I was slightly apprehensive about attending the makeover; would I look like a 70s housewife, or a pantomime dame by the time they were finished with me? Fortunately it was neither. I browsed the newID studios website before my session, and was encouraged by the transformations and the naturalness of the ordinary people who were on there. My session, at the Manchester studio, started with me having my hair washed and blown dry, my stylist kept it nice and natural simply adding some bounce. Then it was the makeup session which was very enjoyable. The makeup artist, Jade, discussed with me the look I wanted, (unobtrusive which enhanced my face and would be good for professional occasions) and talked me all through the process. To my relief, the makeup was light, subtle and I loved the end result. Jade discussed each step, so in effect this was a makeup lesson and she also explained all the products used. I was particularly impressed with the ‘i-prime’ which was a base layer and evened out my skin. Jade used new-to-me products, such as highlighter as well as brown eye shadow, which I hadn’t tried for years. At the end of that session she gave me a paper picture of the products used and how she had applied them – really useful for me to refer to at home. Then it was on to meet Lauren the photographer. She was fabulous! I lost count of the number of photos she took, but I had four changes of clothes and she used lots of props such as a stairway, a sofa, coloured backlighting, wallpapered walls. Shots were taken from every angle and some of the poses seemed strange – but came out really well. I was able to select one photograph to take with me, although it took me ages to whittle down to just one image, as I could have happily selected a few. I could buy more if I wished, and there was no hard sell. One of the packages the studio offer is for aspiring models for whom they will create a portfolio. So ... did I enjoy it? Yes – I loved it! I came away with a new look, a great photograph and a resolution to go back again to repeat the experience. It would make a lovely mother and daughter day, or a bride and bridesmaid pre-wedding session or perhaps a special birthday treat.

What is your background and what led you to create your own lampwork business? I was always creative, my professional background is pedagogue, so to be able to work creatively has always been very important to me. Glass beads have always been a great fascination. I discovered a book about glass beads after the birth of my second child more than 10 years ago. Reading that book stirred an emotion that is now an intense passion. How do you market your work? We are involved three to four times yearly in art exhibitions. We also sell on the internet or directly from our glass bead and jewellery studio. What is the most distinctive aspect that you enjoy about your work? I enjoy having the freedom to explore my own path. Primarily I scoop from myself…. I find inspiration in the colours, shapes and patterns that I see in my everyday life, experiences and thoughts. I work with precision and patience and I love the boundless and the ever-on going process. When did you discover lampwork and who was your first teacher? My first bead-making course was in 2003. I worked in a Swiss glass studio with lampwork teacher Renate Berner. What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome? My greatest challenge was finding the confidence to offer my own lampwork courses. The feedback I have been given from other lampwork artists has been very positive which keeps me motivated. A lot of bead-makers approach me wishing to attend my classes, so for me, teaching has been a positive challenge. What is your favourite technique? What excites you about it? My favourite technique is creating stratified precision dots and very fine raking.To be honest I get excited about almost everything that relates to surface decoration. Full and strong colours are important in my work. April 2013

Have you travelled abroad to teach or to attend lampwork gatherings? Yes I often travel abroad to run workshops and recently I was teaching in Europe. I also visit France and Germany for lampwork gatherings where I share my skills and experience with like minded friends. What keeps you motivated? I find that I’m at my best when I’m not under pressure. My creativity suffers when I’m stressed. When it’s time to recharge the batteries, where do you go? I draw on the support from my family and nature to give me strength, power and energy. I am very thankful for my wonderful family. I enjoy long walks in the woods or along the banks of the lake that is near to my house. YOUR NEW CAMERA You get the camera out of the packaging and once you find out how to put the battery in the next problem is turning it on...not always as straightforward as you would think. However, let’s assume you now have a ‘live’ camera in your hand...what next? 38

Modern cameras are complex bits of electronic wizardry but they are also much, much, more user friendly than even the most basic model from the past. Most modern cameras are full of buttons that you push or turn but don’t be intimidated they all have an inbuilt ‘auto’ button nowadays which will get you started. Assuming you would like to progress beyond the auto button (and I would recommend you spend time to do this… yes I know it means reading the instructions, worth it I promise) Three basic control settings you will come across frequently and controls you must get to grips with for a basic understanding of how they affect your images. These 3 controls work together and their relationship will determine how your photo will look. Obviously on the auto setting the camera will sort things out for you...but not always! Read more about these settings below in my next article in issue 9. 1. ISO – the measure of a digital camera sensor’s sensitivity to light. The lower the setting the more light you need to take photographs. Most modern cameras have a setting range of between 100 and 3200 ISO.You would use 100 in bright daylight and 3200 low light and for photography without using the flash (available light) 2. Aperture – the size of the opening in the lens when a picture is taken and measured as ‘f’ settings. Most settings range from around f2.8 or 3.5 up to f22 or beyond. Use 2.8 to blur the background and 22 to keep everything as sharp as possible in the foreground and the background. 3. Shutter Speed – the amount of time that the shutter is open. These speeds typically are between a second and longer and 1000th of a second or faster. A simple rule is that the longer the shutter is open the more chance of the photo being blurred and the use of a tripod is essential, the faster shutter speeds eliminate camera shake and can usefully be used for images of fast moving objects. DIVINE SHARING with my razor tool? Did I ever mention that I love my razor tool! (5) So now I’m getting somewhere. I like the raised flowers but I think I can get more interest in the base bead. How about making a twisty from the transparent glass and using that to encase the base? Hmmmmm, and I wonder if I can make two layers of petals on top of the leaves and keep the whole lot raised? Can I manage the heat control needed and not crack my base bead? (6) Ahhhhhh, now I’m happy, but where do I take this to now? I love playing with glass! LAMPWORK DIVA DEBORAH DEW

The evolution of an idea…. I sat at the torch with no particular plan in mind, pulled a few stringers when an idea popped into my head. The basis of the idea was to use several different colours of transparent glass to encase a base bead and decorate over the top of it. I started by making a small barrel in a pretty periwinkle colour, then encased with wraps of darkest purple at either end, added wraps of dark aqua and a middle wrap of lime green, pressed the lot into a lentil shape then added dots to the surface. (1) As I was working the ideas started to flow... My inner voice was having a good old chat... I know, I thought, I’ll add a leaf under a raised flower. (2) Getting there, but I don’t like the green dots melted in on the surface, I think I’ll try raised dots the same colour as the centre of my bead. (3) Better, but still not right, the leaves look too flat and they’re triangular not leaf shaped, let’s try again with raised leaves and what about leaving out the lime green wrap around the centre of the bead? (4) No, that doesn’t work, the base has lost its interesting look. I think I’ll go back to the lime green wrap but what will happen if I cut into the edges of the bead 40

JEWELLERY DIVA LANZAJEWEL ANNE MACLEOD CRISP This month our correspondant Anne MacLeod Crisp shares her jewellery expertise and latest research into Olivine otherwise known as Peridot. My interest in this stone is for jewellery making purposes and I thought some of our readers may share this interest. My passion is to combine olivine with lava stone to make some really sensational pieces. The French word for Olivine is Peridot, it is found in Germany, Russia, South Africa, Arizona, Australia and the Canary Islands. There are many different and differing locations for olivine depending on which reference book you read, but one thing is for certain is that it is often found on Volcanic Islands and can also be found in Meteorites. The Romans called it Topazus after an Island in the Red Sea. The Greeks named peridot, chrysolite (gold stone). In ancient times it was valued for its property to dispel terror when it was set in gold. Peridot is the birthstone for the month of August. 42

Its healing properties when held against the skin are said to remove toxins, enables us to let go of the past and helps to strengthen personal identity.When used as a pendulum it can release stress. Olivine is rarely found as large stones rather as very small stones and chips. It is widely used in jewellry and here on Lanzarote every souvenir shop has quantities of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. I wear an olivine ring and have chunks of lava with olivine in it on my patio which I collected from the Island over 42 years ago. Joan Gordon your Editor of this great magazine also has a necklace of olivine and Lava that I made for her when she first visited the Island a couple of years ago. With living on Lanzarote I am very disappointed to see many of the souvenir shops use green glass rather than the true semi-precious stone and charge the price of olivine to unsuspecting tourists. Sadly nothing has been done to correct this although having said that, there are jewellers here who use certified olivine and produce quality souvenirs. So, if you are purchasing items reported to contain olivine do yourself a favour and check that you are provided a certificate to prove that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s real.The pieces illustrated here in this article are from Karin of Karinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Boutique a friend and colleague who also works and lives here in Lanzarote. DIVINE SHARING Once you have discovered styles of wine that you prefer then when next experiencing new wines, remember that food can be a great testing ground for wine exploration. Many food styles have an accompanying wine that goes hand in hand. For example: Big steak – Shiraz, Grenache or Malbec Roast lamb – Cabernet Sauvignon Chicken – Chardonnay Fish – Sauvignon blanc or Riesling
DIVINE WINE + FOOD ADVICE JOE WARREN When you are looking to purchase wine do you; A) Always choose a familiar wine? B) Purchase the one style of wine? C) Find a wine you like and experiment with different regions? Being experienced in wine, I am always willingly to try a variety of wines and styles that may or may not be to my taste so as to expand my knowledge. For readers who chose A or B from my lead question printed above, you may feel flustered or confused when confronted with large wine selections from department stores or wine shops. Whilst initially it may seem a confronting sight think, about this. As a women walking into a clothing or shoe store are you disappointed if the store doesn’t offer a large selection of garments and accessories for you to choose from? Men who shop in clothing, hardware or sports stores also expect a variety of products and tools to browse through and compare before making a purchase. Our decisions for what we like and choose to buy come from experience. 44

These wines in general compliment the protein; however it is in the accompanying ‘sides’ that the magic can happen. Some meat from the barbecue can handle big reds although pan seared lamb cutlets match extremely well with a Pinot Noir. Pork loin roasted or seared loves a fuller Chardonnay or aged Riesling. White fish that has been baked whole can be perfectly enhanced with a crisp white such as Riesling or cool climate Chardonnay. Red fish such as salmon, screams out for a Pinot Gris and seared tuna marries perfectly with a light Pinot Noir. There is such a fascinating world out there to be experienced with food and wine that I think many people over complicate things. DIVINE INTERVIEW WANAREE TANNER
JEWELLERY DIVA WANAREE TANNER I’m currently working on my reliquary collection and rediscovering my love of pointillism, strangely enough, through tattooing. While these may seem like divergent interests, ultimately it’s about making that human to human connection and trying to convey an experience as an artist that is often beyond the confines of language. Sharing art, through body adornment, whether through jewellery or tattooing, brings that connection into a very personal realm. Where were you born and raised? I was born in Mexico City, Mexico, raised in Thailand and Idaho. Where do you live now? Quincy, IL, USA. What is your background and what led you to your current teaching position in Cornwall? I started working as a full time artist about six years ago, making my living selling my work. My fascination with metal clay quickly took over my life and my studio, as my technical knowledge struggled to keep up with my inspiration. It led to 60 hours a week in the studio for over a year, obsessively experimenting. That gave birth to a number of techniques that people began asking me to share which turned into magazine articles, videos, online class, and weekend workshops. Amazingly, teaching studios and schools began asking me to travel to teach, and that led me to Cornwall, where I guest taught three workshops. 47

Do you sell your own work? Yes, I do, when I have time to make it. Currently, I’m working on a few large scale projects that eat up most of my studio time, so I haven’t done much production work. What is the most distinctive aspect of your work? Hmm... that’s a tough question to answer. Maybe I’ll have an easier time answering that question in another 20 years... perhaps not. Where do you gain inspiration for your designs? I love world myths and the study of symbolism, but really any moment in any given day can be just as inspiring. Being aware and open to the beauty in what may seem ordinary, can cause an inspired spark to suddenly ignite. What has been the most challenging piece of jewellery you have made to date? “Tiger Reliquary”, the entire base of the piece completely blew out during firing, and I spent several days hammering, reforming, and re-firing the piece. I had to overcome the desire to toss the entire piece in the trash. Often the frustration is more difficult to overcome than the actual problem. How many classes do you offer at the college and what is the most popular? I mostly instruct at teaching studios, and have four different workshops currently available.The most popular is my Silhouette cut gallery bezel wire in metal clay class.

DIVINE INTERVIEW WANAREE TANNER What is your favourite technique? Cutting original designs in bezel wire for stone settings. What excites you about it? The look on student’s faces when they realize that is possible to take something we’ve been doing in jewellery since jewellery design began and turn it on its head. What era of jewellery design do you like the most? Anglo-Saxon metalwork, the intricacy, detailing, and storytelling fascinate me to no end. Would you share with us some information about the new copper clay and how metal clay artists can use it in conjunction with silver clay? Copper clay is actual copper metal particles, and once fired is solid copper, in the same way that silver metal clay is solid silver when fired. You can even combine the two and create pieces with these two metals are married. What is the most tempting thing, lurking in your fridge? This is a bit embarrassing, there’s not much that’s edible in the fridge at the moment.

OLD LLANTRISANT WALES In this and future issues of MCD I’d like to share with you my passion for exploring where I live, my travels abroad and moments of inspiration. Many of my jewellery designs are inspired by my walks in the countryside or by the coast. At heart I’m an outdoors person who draws energy from nature. By Joan Gordon I’d like to introduce to you where I live when I’m in the UK. My home is in a small village called Old Llantrisant which is just off the M4 and about a 30 minute drive west of Cardiff. This is an old medieval town set high on a hill with extensive views that look out over the surrounding towns and countryside. My studio, where I make jewellery, run workshops and classes is based in the Model House Craft and Design Centre. In fact I’m sitting in my studio as I write this. I’m based up on the third floor of a converted 19th century former workhouse. The view from my studio windows is brilliant. Today there is snow on the hills and I can see horses enjoying a wild gallop on the village common. Working from here can be distracting especially when the sun is shining and I’m itching to go out and explore. From the kitchen window opposite my studio, I can glimpse the castle green and just around the corner from that is the Norman Church which dates back to the 11thcentury. Within the Model House building there are several artists, makers and designers who have, over time, become my friends. I’m very lucky to be based in such a creative environment. Visitors to our building can enjoy shopping for unique handmade gifts and accessories from the gallery on the ground floor and directly from the studios located on the upper three floors. DIVINE SHARING and often on weekends there are several crafting workshops in action. If you’re planning on visiting our village, make sure you visit our facebook page especially if you’re interested in learning a new skill or fine tuning an existing one. Before I came into work today I went on one of the many walking tracks that meander around our village. After several days of below zero temperatures, rain and snow falls, it was wonderful to get out into the fresh air and enjoy the sun shining on my face. My walk commenced at The Bear Inn which is my favourite watering hole. This super little pub is situated opposite The Model House and the Bull Ring where the statue of Dr William Price, the eccentric surgeon, chartist, scholar and druid stands with arms outstretched as if in welcome to all visitors to our village. The interior of The Bear is typical of an old inn with an inviting fire where you can sit on a leather sofa enjoying a cuppa or tipple whilst reading the paper or catching up with the friendly local village residents. The publican Colin and his staff offer a warm welcome, the ales and wine are excellent and the food is top notch yet offered at very reasonable prices. If you’re ever visiting Llantrisant on a Sunday make sure you book in advance for lunch as it is extremely popular!

On the other corner of the Bull Ring is our General Store. Here we can pick up grocery items, fresh fruit, veggies, flowers, plants for the garden, Welsh cheese and the tastiest local bacon you could ever eat! If you have a sweet tooth you’ll be excited by the old-fashioned display of sweet jars (lollies Australia – candy USA) that line the shelves. The shop is decorated in a charming old world style as is the toy shop which also fronts onto the Bull Ring. I love living here because it’s a real community. This Easter Sunday I’ll probably go to the local church for the service even though I’m not of 51

DIVINE SHARING that faith. Last year I wandered in to the church to light candles for my parents and parents-in-law who have now passed over. I was surprised by a modern seven piece band playing lively hymns and children cheerfully wandering about, intrigued by the beautiful flower and Easter displays. I decided to stay for what was a joyful service and even joined in on the Easter egg hunt that the vicar had set up within the church. I was invited to stay on for tea and hot cross buns but I declined as I felt shy, not having visited the church before. This Easter Sunday I think I’ll take up the offer and join in the celebration. Right, well that’s it from me this month, it’s time catch up with my husband and to wander over to The Bear Inn to meet up with Tom our friend who helped with the photography for this article. I think I owe him a pint for all his efforts! Next month I’ll take you to a fantastic ruin of a 16th century castle that is about a half hour drive from Llantrisant - it’s quite spectacular and still in good repair.

Why should filing trays be boring and utilitarian? I used a basic Ikea unit and some simple materials to create a vintage-style set of drawers to hide my clutter. DIVINE MAKE METHOD OF WORK 1 If the surface of your wooden drawers is rough then give it a rub with sandpaper. Rub the wood oil onto the drawers with a cloth that you can dispose of such as a cut up T-shirt ensuring that you follow the grain of the wood. 2 Use the PVA to glue the newspaper into the drawers a section at a time. I cut my Japanese newspaper into rectangular sections but you could also rip it if you’d prefer torn edges. Allow the glue to spread over the newspaper as well as under to ensure good adherence. 3 After the glue has dried thoroughly trim any edges that are sticking up with a craft knife. Spread on the glaze or Modge Podge using the foam brush. Make sure that all of the newspaper is thoroughly covered. 4 Use a strong glue to stick the name plates onto the front of the drawers. I used a piece of card to create a template ensuring that each name plate was fixed in the right position. 5 If you’ve got nice handwriting then you can just write your labels and slide them into the name plate. I used a font that I liked and printed my labels onto a piece of lightweight card.

DESIGNER TIPS • Leave everything to dry thoroughly in between stages to prevent ripping the newspaper or transferring the wood stain onto the insides of the drawers. • Personalise your drawers – if you’d prefer a more funky look then paint the outsides of your drawers a bright colour and use a wild or retro-style paper to line them. 65

‘Owl’ Sewing Kit Review MAGGIE JONES
COMPONENTS Four different fabrics, stuffing, three colours of felt, two buttons, three types of ribbon, needle, crochet thread, sewing thread, paper pattern and instructions are included in the tube. Each kit will have some variation in fabrics and colours and newer kits will vary slightly. (3)
This month’s review is a sewing kit from The Crafty Kit Company, who produce a range of sewn, crocheted and charm bracelet kits. This patchwork owl is made from retro fabrics, felt and buttons. It was easy and fun to sew together. The packaging is from recycled materials and as it’s a sturdy cardboard tube, it can be re-used. Recycle the tube as a storage vessel for your crochet hooks or pencils. All components, apart from scissors and pins, are included in the kit. Maggie Jones talks you through the process.
MAKING UP THE KIT As long as you have a little sewing experience, this is a simple kit to sew. Instructions are comprehensive, with diagrams of stitches used. Ensure you lay out the pieces first to ensure that each pattern piece is on the correct fabric, as the various fabrics come in different sizes. This was an enjoyable little project to stitch and I felt it would be a great project to take on holiday. (4)
PRESENTATION The packaging is a sturdy cardboard tube, with an illustration of the finished product and a list of contents. Needles are now included although my review kit had an older label on it. (1 + 2)

Beading Bliss since 1986 Beads Unlimited came from humble beginnings back in 1986. On an icy day in March, notable for a three inch snowfall,The Brighton Bead Shop opened.The idea was to supply not just glass beads but a vast, cosmopolitan mix of jewellery making supplies. On that first day under £50 was taken. A less than auspicious start for the vast, corporate and hi-tech entity of today. Through the years, Beads Unlimited has moved with the times. Mail order beads were always a part of the business. It started with a box file by the counter but soon took over the old bathroom at the back of the shop. As they expanded into wholesale beads and a wider range of jewellery making supplies more room became a priority. There were several moves, including a creepy old storeroom until, in 2001, they moved into their spanking new warehouse. LIFE ONLINE Beads Unlimited has embraced life online wholeheartedly.Their website is constantly evolving, tailoring itself to the needs of their customers. Regular surveys are held to ensure that they are giving their valued customers just what they want. In 2009 they launched the Bead Barmy blog - a haven for beaders and crafters, where they could learn new techniques from the experts, catch up on the latest beading news and give their own input in the Reader’s Galleries and Hobby to Business pages. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES On reaching the milestone of 25 years, their Silver Jubilee celebrations centred on a £10,000 fund raising drive for the RNLI. In the teeth of a full on recession, the bead team needed to put their thinking caps on. Simply rattling a tin would not do! Beads Unlimited came up with some interesting and innovative fundraising ideas. One of the biggest hits was The Big B Charity bead. Designed specifically as a constant fundraiser, the bead was available at checkout on line and raised over £2,000 towards their target. SECRETS OF SUCCESS As their fundraising shows, Beads Unlimited has always tried to be more than the average bead shop. They feel that a big part of their continued success, even in tough times, is due to a revived passion for home-grown style. The Brighton Bead Shop continues to this day and hosts regular jewellery making classes to eager clientele. Beads Unlimited are renowned for their friendly and professional approach. MATERIALS & TOOLS Dremel Engraver, Champagne flutes, Paper, Pen, Tape, Swarovski crystals and glass beads. METHOD OF WORK Safety Tip â&#x20AC;&#x201C; wear protective eyeshades when engraving into glass and blowing off the glass dust as you work. STEP ONE Draw the initial of your intended recipient onto paper or print out letters using a computer. Tape the letter that you are using inside the flute. Using the engraver, carefully engrave the outline of the letter onto the flute. STEP TWO Remove the paper letter from inside the flute. Using the side of the engraver, fill in the outline. Carefully blow off the dust as you work. STEP THREE Cut out an oval from a sheet of paper and stick it inside the glass to use as an etching guide to form the border. STEP FOUR Glue glass or Swarovski crystal beads onto the stem of the flute with specific glue which bonds glass to glass.

BAZIL + TOMATO CANNELLONI If garden space is at a premium you can grow herbs and cherry tomatoes on a sunny window sill. It will not only add a fresh splash of colour to your home but growing herbs makes alfresco cooking a pleasure. Make this light and tasty dish for a quick supper or share it with friends accompanied with a tossed green leaf and avocado salad. INGREDIENTS Olive oil 3 sheets fresh lasagne 150g ricotta cheese 30g fresh basil leaves, roughly torn Ÿ tsp freshly grated nutmeg Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 tabs grated parmesan cheese TOMATO + BASIL SAUCE 1 tbsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 350ml / fresh or tined peeled and chopped tomatoes 1tabs of tomato petso ½ cup of white wine Pinch of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Small handful of fresh chopped basil leaves METHOD Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. For the cannelloni, lightly grease a small ovenproof dish with oil. Place the fresh lasagne sheets on a board and divide the ricotta cheese between them, spreading it evenly over each sheet. Scatter the basil leaves over the top of the ricotta cheese plus a light dusting of parmesan. Sprinkle the grated nutmeg over the lasagne sheets and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Roll the pasta up into long tubes and arrange these in the base of the greased ovenproof dish. Cut each tube in half so that you have 6 individual cannelloni tubes For the sauce, heat the olive oil in a small saucepan and add the garlic. Fry over a medium heat for a few minutes. Add the tomato, pesto and white wine to the pan and bring it to the boil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Reduce the heat and simmer for two to three minutes. Pour the tomato sauce over and around the cannelloni tubes. Sprinkle more parmesan chess over the sauce. Transfer the ovenproof dish to the oven for 10 minutes, or until the cannelloni are heated through and the pasta is cooked.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR What better way to introduce the joy of spring by creating a wonderful birthday card for an older child or adult with a matching gift card. Spring is the awakening of the land after the dark and cold days of winter and for the crafter it is a wonderful time to create bright, joyous cards for those we love. By Sharon Williams MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT Craftsuprint design sheet x 2 Crafters Companion score board and scoring tool Pricking tool Double sided tape Double sided 2mm foam pads Glue Stick Blue Paper flowers Crystal Gem Brad 5 ½” of Blue organza ribbon A4 Card HOW TO MAKE THE CARD Fold the A4 card using a score board and tool into an A5 card. Print off 2 copies of the design you have bought from Craftsuprint. Put one to the side for the tag and cut out the design of the second one. Place double sided tape around the four edges of the largest section but do not stick it down yet. Put the decoupage pieces together following the design and using the double sided foam pads.A quick tip: once you have removed the backing from the foam pads and before you stick the piece down just run over the top of the foam pads with the glue stick, this will give you time to reposition the piece just in case you place it in the wrong position! Once you have put the decoupage pieces together pull back approximately 2.5cm of the double sided tape at each corner, creating “tabs”. Place your design onto your card gently. Pull each of the “tabs” along the edges of the card so that the backing will come off and the decoupage will be stuck down in the correct position. Take your three flower shapes and place them on top of each other. Connect them with a gem brad through the middle. Make a hole in the card using your pricking tool then place the unopened brad through the hole and open it up on the inside of the card to keep the flower in place (this will be covered by the insert sheet). Print off the insert sheet with your verse on and attach using double sided tape. THE TAG Take the 2nd Craftsuprint design sheet and cut out just the Owl including the one from the main design. Decoupage the 1st and 2nd full owl design. Take your ribbon and hold the two ends together creating a loop and attach that to the back of the next piece of decoupage, add an extra piece of double sided tape on top then add that to the main body of the decoupage. Complete the decoupage to finish the matching gift tag. ANZAC BISCUITS REVISITING OLD FAVOURITES An Anzac biscuit is a sweet biscuit popular in Australia and New Zealand made using rolled oats, flour, desiccated coconut, sugar, butter, golden syrup, baking soda and boiling water. Anzac biscuits have long been associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) established in World War I. Women made and sent these biscuits to the men severing in the war as the biscuits travelled well and had a long shelf line when kept in airtight tins. INGREDIENTS 1 1/4 cups plain flour, sifted 1 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup caster sugar 3/4 cup desiccated coconut 2 tablespoons golden syrup or treacle 2 tablespoons of water 150g unsalted butter, chopped 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda METHOD OF WORK Preheat your oven to 170°C. Place the flour, oats, sugar and coconut in a large bowl and stir to combine. In a small saucepan place the golden syrup and butter and stir over low heat until the butter has fully melted. Mix the bicarbonate of soda with 2 tablespoons of water and then add it to the golden syrup mixture. Remove it from the heat when it starts to bubble. Pour the syrup into the dry ingredients and mix together with a wooden spoon until fully combined. Roll tablespoonfuls of mixture into balls and place on baking trays lined with non-stick baking paper. Press down on the tops of each ball to flatten them slightly. Bake for 12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove them from the tray and allow the biscuits to cool on a rack before storing them in an airtight tin.

PISTACHIO TEA CAKE Fancy a slice of something rather nice with your morning cuppa? This cake is quick and simple to whip up and really hits the spot when you’re looking for an easy cake to bake. INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup pistachios • 1/3 cup self raising wholemeal flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 2/3 cup raw sugar • 2 large eggs • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted • Beaten egg white for glaze METHOD OF WORK STEP 1 Preheat the oven to 180C. Line a cake bar tin with baking paper. STEP 2 Roughly chop the pistachios with a sharp knife. STEP 3 Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. STEP 4 Whisk the sugar and eggs in a large bowl. STEP 5 Stir in the melted butter until just incorporated. STEP 6 Spoon the batter into the loaf tin. STEP 7 Glaze the top of the cake with egg white and sprinkle on the pistachios. STEP 8 Bake in the centre of the oven (for approx 35 - 40mins) or until the top of the cake springs back when pressed. STEP 9 Remove the cake from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 5mins before removing it and placing it on a rack to cool.
