The Core of Downtown is truly the heart of Memphis. More than 5 million visitors each year make their way to downtown Memphis, and The Core is the city’s welcome mat. The tall buildings are anchored by long-tenured corporations, budding entrepreneurs, creative agencies and a vibrant lifestyle that fuels the streets 24 hours of the day. The Main Street Pedestrian Mall is filled with outdoor restaurant seating, relaxing cafes and pleasant green spaces. Our city was born here, and The Core continues to be the pulse of Memphis.

explore our arts district Photo by Andrew J Breig
Just one block south of Beale is the historic one-square mile neighborhood, South Main District. Notably ranked as one of four most undercover, stylish neighborhoods by Paste Magazine, it is full of vibrant entrepreneurs, artists, locally-owned shops, chef-owned restaurants and stylish salons. This was Memphis’ first suburb and arts district, and now it’s known at one of most lively places to be in Downtown Memphis. Today, through the incredible work of the National Civil Rights Museum, this neighborhood is where the world comes to hear the story of the civil rights movement. Also home to the grand Orpheum Theatre, where Beale Street meets Broadway, South Main is in every essence “Memphis.” Creativity pours from the sidewalks and the fun friendly atmosphere will keep you coming back for more.
spend a day in
south main It’s said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and you won’t find a better place to start than The Arcade. Memphis’ oldest restaurant (open since 1919), has the same look and feel you would find when it’s doors first opened. Don’t be afraid to sneak a delicious early morning milkshake either. Pick up your favorite coffee and start to navigate the self-guided tours throughout the neighborhood. The South Main Historic Walking Tour gives insight into the area’s fascinating history while The Mosaic Artwalk displays various works by local artists like the picture perfect “I Am a Man” mural. If the kids start getting restless, let them loose at the Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum inside the beautiful Central Station. Play with huge model train sets and vintage memorabilia. It’s lunch time. South Main has that good ol' Memphis food you’re looking for in Gus’ World Famous Fried Chicken and Central BBQ, but also offers quaint patio seating at South of Beale. If you haven't been to the new Blues Hall of Fame, you're missing out on an important piece of Memphis history. This museum honors the legends and icons from across the country that shaped and inspired The Blues.
One of the most important and impactful museums in the country is right across the street, The National Civil Rights Museum, which recently under went a $25 million renovation. Absorb incredible exhibits that chronicle the powerful struggle of freedom fighters that carved the way for others to follow. This museum was named as the Third Most Iconic American Attraction by USA Today. Feeling artsy? South Main was Memphis' first arts district. Explore the galleries like Reel 2 Real, Jack Robinson Gallery, Art Village Gallery, Joysmith, Tops Gallery or the newest one, Circuitous Succession. Cafe Pontotoc is the hot spot for happy hour, and that romantic dinner you’ve been planning can be thoroughly enjoyed at Spindini or Rizzo’s Diner. Friends’ night out? Try Onix for soul food and jazz, or Double J Smokehouse and Green Beatle for American style eating and rock music.

Awarded“America’s Favorite Iconic Street” in a national USA Today poll, Beale Street does more than live up to the title. You know it’s the Home of the Blues, but it’s also home to FedExForum and the Memphis Grizzlies, recently named the #2 sports franchise in the nation. With Handy Park, Gibson Guitar Factory, and three blocks chock full of 24/7 fun with nightclubs, restaurants and shops, it’s no wonder Beale Street is Tennessee’s top tourism revenue generator. This historic street was the stomping grounds for legends like WC Handy, Elvis, and BB King, and today millions of people from around the globe come to hear the music pulsating down Beale. P.S. Don’t your dancing shoes, and we prefer they’re blue suede. Learn more at BealeStreet.com.
spend a day down on
beale street Beale Street never sleeps, so make sure you start your day on the right foot with chicken & waffles at Miss Polly’s Soul City Cafe. With fuel in your stomach, it’s time to lose yourself in the shops on Beale Street. Try on stylish clothing at Lansky Clothier to the King or Eel, Etc. Dig through trinkets you’ve never imagined in shops like Strange Cargo, Blues City General Store or Tater Reds Lucky Mojo. Still can’t find what you’re looking for? Browse through A. Schwab, the oldest general store in town to ramble through so many collectibles you won’t know what to take home! Then grab a seat at the old time soda fountain for a homemade malt or sundae, or an adult milkshake with a little something extra in it! Explore the newest addition near Beale, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame that pays tribute to the Memphis musicians and others influenced by Memphis music. You can also enjoy a tour at the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum and discover the story of how the blues, gospel, soul and rock collided and about the musicians who made it happen.
Roam over to Handy Park to enjoy a free blues show and a drink on the patio. Just down the street you can take a tour of WC Handy’s Home at the corner of Beale and Fourth Street, or stumble into the Withers Collection Museum, an amazing collection of photography by the acclaimed Ernest Withers. Want to see where some of the world’s most sought after guitars are crafted? Head to the The Gibson Guitar Factory as luthiers create some of the finest guitars on the planet.

Cocktails are abundant along Beale! Catch happy hour at Wet Willie’s and mix your own drink, then head nearby to Dyer’s for a juicy burger. For a more romantic feel, head over to bleu. After catching a Memphis Grizzlies game at FedExForum (aka The Grindhouse), head to Silky O’Sullivans and listen to dueling pianos and great music on the patio. Get the party started with Silky’s Divers, before heading to Beale’s nightlife. Get those blue suede shoes out and get down at any of Beale’s clubs like BB Kings, Hard Rock Cafe, Rum Boogie, New Daisy, Jerry Lee’s, Alfreds, Tin Roof or Club 152.

feel the vibes in the edge district Photo by Cat and Fish
Rock ‘n roll was literally born in this quirky neighborhood. Home to Sun Studio, where the legendary careers of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and so many other musical icons were launched, spawning an entire new movement in music. The Edge sits on the edge of Downtown and the growing Memphis Medical District, and has a certain edge of its own. It’s a neighborhood with industrial spaces and old auto shops transformed into art studios, workshops and restaurants. Businesses like High Cotton Brewery, The Dizzy Bird Jazz Lounge, St. Blues Guitars, Marshall Arts and the popular Trolley Stop Market bring a young and vibe to the Edge. If you want to step off the beaten path, this neighborhood is for you! Victorian Village, once lined with Victorian mansions during the late 1800s, was nicknamed Millionaire’s Row. Today you can visit these luxurious homes for a trip back in time. After your visit, you’ll want to stop by the Mollie Fontaine Lounge, named one of the best bars in America.

This typical pre-Civil War middle class home furnished as it might have been in 1850. Free tours are given on the first Saturday of each month from 1 - 4 pm.
