“Webster Groves — A City Of Neighbors & Friends” Is Theme For The 2017 Parade (submitted by Mike Evans of Webster Groves) Tuesday, July 4, 10 a.m. • Sponsored by Reliance Bank Parade Route The parade travels a two-mile route through Webster Groves, drawing a crowd of thousands of spectators with more than 80 units.

The parade begins at Lockwood and Selma and travels west on Lockwood. It turns south on South Gore to Big Bend. It then turns east on Big Bend, and turns one last time south on Elm Avenue. The parade ends at Memorial Park (at the intersection of Elm Avenue and Glendale Road). Marshals The Grand Marshals for this year’s parade are the Webster Groves High School boys’ basketball team and the girls’ soccer team, both state championship winners, and Nia Lyles, who won the state

championship in the shot put. In addition, we are honored to have volunteers from Webster Groves Masonic Temple to serve as Parade Marshals again this year, lining up units, enforcing security measures and securing the course. Parade Judges Parade Judges have the honor of selecting parade units to receive awards in the various categories listed below. Awards will be given at the July 18 Webster Groves City Council meeting. Judges for the parade are: • Ann and Ellen Fusz, who received the Lifetime Achievement in the Arts for their volunteer work with Opera Theatre of St. Louis since 1981. They are also lifelong members of Holy Redeemer parish. • Mark Goff, “neighbor and friend” of Ann and Ellen, has lived and worked in Webster Groves for over 26 years. He has also volunteered with Opera Theatre St. Louis since 1991. Parade Awards A first place (Best) and an honorable mention (Outstanding) winner will be awarded in the following categories: Children’s Entry, Civic Entry, Classic Entry, Commercial Entry, Neighborhood Entry, Performing Entry, Best Theme, Visiting Entry, Novelty Unit, Special Judges’

The Webster Groves Community Days Parade starts at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 4. file photo by Diana Linsley Awards (three awards for units that impress the judges for various reasons.) Safety Of course, safety is of paramount importance, but parades have inherent risk, so it’s important that parade participants and spectators do all they can to help. The parade draws thousands of spectators. • With regard to parade units, several safety measures are in place and enforcement will be without exception. No throwing of water balloons or large super soakers will be allowed from any parade unit or spectators. Each sizeable motorized unit will have wheel walkers, who keep the path clear in front and on the sides of the unit. Parade participants will not be allowed to throw candy or other items

from a moving unit; however, walkers may hand the items to spectators on sidewalks. Violators should be reported to a parade marshal or police officer. • Along the parade route, parents and adults should keep close track of their children and prevent them from running in front of a parade vehicle to get a piece of candy or trinket. Remain on the curb or behind it. There will be no sales of water, ice cream, etc., on the street once the parade has started and 10 minutes prior to start time until the conclusion of the event. Safety is everyone’s job. Please help by doing what you can. • Entry or exit from parking lots at Hixson Middle School or the Rec Complex will not be allowed for the duration of the parade.

Webster Groves Lions Club Carnival & Barbecue • July 1-4 — Located On Hixson Middle School & Webster Groves Recreation Cmplex Parking Lots Two simple words. “Lions Carnival.” Two simple words that have meant so much, to so many, for so long. Since 1926. Wow! That is a long time. Another year to remember. 1960. That’s when the Lions were invited to join in with the Webster Groves July 4th Community Days. That’s a long time too. And the Lions are still working on improving the experience. Then again, you might be a newbie to the concept. Doesn’t matter. There is so much to do. So much to see. So much to eat. (Yeah. We’ve got you covered.) And it’s there for everyone. So bring your family, your friends and your neighbors (even the ones that give you apples for Halloween.) “Rides,” you say? We got your rides. Eighteen of ‘em. And we’ve got three new ones this year. We’ve also got two unlimited ride wristband days. Saturday, July 1, you can ride from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on a $35 wristband. Then again on Monday, July 3, you can ride

from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. on a $25 wristband. Food? Now you want food? Well, the Lions do have some good eats. We’ve got BBQ ribs, rib tips, pork steaks, chicken, bratwurst, burgers and hot dogs. Then, to dress it up, there’s corn-on-thecob, baked beans, cole slaw and, of course, baked ’taters. And to wash that down, we have a huge variety of cold, frosty beverages to choose from. Ahhhhh. Refreshing! What to do next? Well, friends, there are games to play at the Midway and have I mentioned the FIREWORKS? There will be a bunch of those bright, colorful, shoostie-bangie things going up, not only on Tuesday, the 4th, but on Monday, the 3rd as well. Bring a chair, a blanket, or simply find a place to park it. (Remember, the proper sequence is “Ooohhh,” then “Ahhh,” then “Ohhhh.”) Speaking of “parking it,” the Webster Groves High School Band-Aides will be providing on-site parking at Hixson Middle School for $10 and off-site parking for only

ACCOMMODATIONS/RULES:

•Refrain from placing blankets/tarps on the ground before the day of fireworks. Ground covers, if left too long, can damage the park. To protect the grounds, blankets may be removed. Removed blankets may be recovered at the Rec Complex during normal hours by July 11, at which time they’ll be donated. •Coolers or outside food and drink are not allowed on the grounds. •Due to insurance restrictions, no outside booths or strolling vendors are allowed unless coordinated through the Lions Club of Webster Groves. •Ambrose Way will close from June 27 through July 6. •Moss Field (football stadium) is closed during the event. No one is allowed inside the stadium to view fireworks.

$5, which includes shuttle service to and from the carnival. This carnival and barbecue is the Lions’ single, largest, investment of time and money. It requires months upon months of planning and over 6,000 hours of planning, labor, setting up, running, cleaning up and putting it all away. The coordination between the Lions, the City and the Webster Groves School District is paramount. This carnival is our major fundraiser for the year and a lot of the money has gone to help many folks, not only internationally and nationally, but locally as well. Some of the recipients of our help include: Webster Groves Police and Fire Depart-
