• Your rocket is blasted into the sky by air pressure. Stamping on the bottle squeezes air through the pipe and into the launch tube. This makes the air pressure in the tube shoot up. The air pushes on the bottom of the sponge cylinder, propelling the rocket upwards. • The rocket launcher works in the same way as a gun. In a gun, explosives in the gun barrel create high pressure, which forces the bullet from the barrel at high speed. • A pea shooter also works like the rocket launcher. When you blow into it, the pressure rises and pushes the pea from the tube. • Real rockets carry fuel on board. The fuel burns and sends a stream of hot gases out of the rocket engine. As the gases go one way, the rocket goes the other. • Rockets were invented in China around a thousand years ago. They were like today’s firework rockets, and used for warfare and entertainment.

• If the rocket does not smoothly fly from the launch tube, the rocket is probably rolled too tight. • If the rocket gets damaged, remove the foam rocket head to make a new rocket from old magazine paper. • If the power station is damaged, reuse another bottle for your next launches. The fun is unlimited. 3

3. Apply three pieces of sticky tape to the paper tube, to stop it unrolling. 4. Fold each of the three fins in half. On each, fold back the fin supports. 5. Apply a piece of double-sided adhesive tape to the marks printed on the rocket body. Apply the fins to the rocket tube, making sure you align them with the marks printed on the rocket body. Press the adhesive tape firmly onto the rocket tube. 2

You are encouraged to recycle some old magazine paper to build the rocket. However, for a quick start, 2 rocket body sheets are included in this kit. After the rockets are worn out, reuse the foam rocket heads to build new rockets with unwanted paper, e.g. magazine paper.

E. OPERATION

To make a rocket you need a rocket body sheet, three fins, the launch tube and a foam rocket head. 1. Punch out the rocket body sheet and the three fins. Keep the rest of the sheet because you’ll need it later. Apply double-sided adhesive tape to the foam rocket head. Peel off the backing paper, so the other sticky side is facing out. 2. Put the rocket body sheet face down and align the launch tube and the foam rocket head on it, near an edge of the paper and with the rocket head protruding a little. Lift the paper at the edge, and roll it around the tube and rocket head. As you do so, the rocket head and body will be fixed together. Do not roll the paper too tightly, as it must easily slip from the launch tube; nor too loosely, as air will leak and the rocket will not travel far.

8 jaar. 3. • Raketten werden ongeveer 1000 jaar geleden uitgevonden in China . Ze zagen

C. MAKING A ROCKET

Your Instructions

Your green rocket

12 x fin templates 2 x rocket body sheets

1 set large nut, bolt, washer and split washer 2 x foam rocket heads

screws

1 set small nut and bolt 2 x bottle connector halves

2 x pipe clamp halves 1 x stand arm

1. You need an open space, such as a large garden or park to launch your rocket. 2. Stand the launch station bottle (the one with water in) on the ground, and lie the empty bottle at the end of the flexible pipe on the ground. 3. Aim the rocket where you want it to fly (it will go a long way, so aim it more upwards rather than horizontally). 4. To launch the rocket, stamp hard on the empty bottle. Your rocket will zoom into the air! 5. To launch the rocket again, you will need to reshape the empty bottle, either by squeezing it or blowing air into the end of the launch tube. 1

1 x flexible pipe 1 x launch tube

Congratulations – you are ready for your first launch. 3,2,1…blast off!

1. Adult supervision and assistance are required at all times. 2. This kit is intended for children aged 8 years or older. 3. This kit and its finished product contain small parts that may cause choking if misused. Keep away from children under 3 years old. 4. Always point the rocket away from yourself when you launch it. 5. Never aim the rocket at anybody, or at any animal. 6. Always wear shoes when you stamp on the bottle to launch the rocket, to avoid hurting your feet. Replace the power station bottle if it is damaged.

1. Push the launch tube into one end of the flexible pipe. 2. Put the two sides of the pipe clamp around this end of the tube. Secure the short sides of the clamp with the small nut and bolt set. Line up the hole in the stand arm with the holes in the longer side of the clamp. Secure the stand arm to the clamp with the large nut and washers set. 3. Put the two halves of the bottle connector together, and secure them with two screws. 4. Insert the other end of the flexible pipe into the bottle connector. 5. Screw a drink bottle into the bottle connector. This will be the "power station". 6. Half fill the other drink bottle with water. Put the stand arm over the neck of the bottle and screw on the lid, so it holds the stand arm in place. The lid should trap the arm. This will be the "launch station".
